Ohio Playwrights Circle Announces New Classes

April 3, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

The Human Race Theatre Company in conjunction with the  Ohio Playwrights Circle will once again partner to offer a series of new classes beginning this April.   These classes are made possible by a Sponsorship from the American ArtWorks Foundation.

The Submission and Production Workshop Series runs six Saturdays, April 14-May 19, 10am-1pm. Come with one or more completed plays and we’ll explore the nuts and bolts of getting your work produced, including treatments, a pitch, format, what not to do, and more.

The Playwrighting class is for all levels. Playwrights will hear their work read aloud by actors and prepared by directors. Eight sessions run Saturdays, June 9-July 28, 10am-2pm. Last session is an evening public reading of student works.

The Collaboration Workshop Series is for writers with basic playwrighting training who wish to work with others in a way similar to the television writers’ room. Eight meetings, August 4-September 22, 10am-2pm. Last session is an evening public reading.

The Making a Play Workshop Series is for playwrights with a completed first draft, who want to workshop their play through to a public reading. Open to writers who have completed Playwrighting levels I and II or equivalent. Ten meetings, Oct 6-Dec 8, 10am-2pm. Last session is an evening public reading.

Please know that participation is limited and each activity may reach the limit quickly. Additionally, there may be opportunities for readers and directors. Locations are central Dayton, but may change.

Understanding the Deeper Layers of Your Story

November 10, 2016 By Dayton Most Metro

14711199_10154714548058013_6930875647651795805_oOn November 12th, the Ohio Playwrights Circle, in association with The Human Race Theatre, will present a new workshop by local playwright Michael London, Understanding the Deeper Layers of Your Story. Designed for regional writers of all levels of experience, this workshop focuses on writing exercises that aid the writer in discovering deeper layers of their story. Understanding the deeper layers of story can be a powerful tool that enables the writer to create a more dynamic plot. These layers can provide the richness of plot that allows a story to be more meaningful and impactful.

This Saturday workshop will held at the Loft Theatre, 126 N. Main Street in downtown Dayton. The hours are 11:00am to 2:00pm and the fee is $50. Register online through the Human Race Theatre or call Marilyn Klaben at 937-461-3823, ext. 3132.
Mike London is Director of the Ohio Playwrights Circle and a playwright who has worked with the Ohio Arts Council’s Artist-in-Residence program for over thirty years. His plays have been produced in the US, Canada and the UK. He received a variety of awards for his novel, Dearest, and for editing a new publication of Jane Austen’s Lady Susan. His latest play in development is Last Night at Trevose.

The Ohio Playwrights Circle (OPC) exists to bring opportunities and education to Ohio playwrights. OPC is a project of the American Artworks Foundation.

Take The Mystery Out Of Playwrighting

August 7, 2015 By Dayton Most Metro

432043_318990408159347_12203253_nThe Ohio Playwrights Circle is offering a class in playwrighting from Sept. 5 to Oct. 17 at the educational facilities of The Human Race Theatre Company.

This class is designed to take the mystery out of playwrighting and provide an introduction to new playwrights. The method of building a play is explored through a variety of exercises. Our focus will be on understanding the tool in basic dramatic structure. The process involves a lot of scene writing, a lot of thinking, a lot of laughing, a lot of learning, and a lot of fun.

Each playwright will have the opportunity to create a 10-Minute Play that will be presented in a public reading. The class is planned for novices as well as experienced playwrights and encourages the opportunity for playwrights to hear their works come to life. No Playwrights will be expected to begin the class with already completed work.

Actors and directors are welcome to be part of the process. Class size is limited. Registration and additional information is available on The HRTC website.

The class will be taught by Ohio Playwright, Michael M. London. It will be held on Saturdays at the Caryl D. Philips Creativity Center, 116 N. Jefferson Street, in downtown Dayton.

The class is a project of the Ohio Playwrights Circle and is sponsored by American ArtWorks Foundation. It is hosted in Dayton by The Human Race Theatre Company, and supported by the Marsha Hanna Fund for the Development of New Plays.
