Rick Springfield, Men at Work, & John Waite At Mix 107.7 SummerFest

August 24, 2022 By Dayton937

In the early 1980s, Rick Springfield signed to RCA Records and was then cast as “Dr. Noah Drake” on the soap General Hospital. While he had released six albums in the 1970s, his 1980 break-through album Working Class Dog gave him the #1 single “Jessie’s Girl.” From his music and TV exposure, he became a teen idol. He continued to star on “GH” while touring and releasing Success Hasn’t Spoiled Me Yet, with the hit “Don’t Talk To Strangers.” Upon releasing his 3rd album with RCA, Living In Oz, he quit “GH” and went back to his rock roots. Living In Oz is considered by many his finest (and hardest rock) album. He starred in the movie Hard to Hold in 1984 and released the soundtrack to it with the hit “Love Somebody,” followed by “Don’t Walk Away” and “Bop Til Ya Drop.” His next album, Tao, was followed up in 1988 by Rock Of Life.

Black Opry Review at Levitt

August 19, 2022 By Dayton937

Black Opry is a home for Black artists and Black fans of country, blues, folk, and Americana music. Country music has been made by and loved by Black people since its conception. For just as long, we have been overlooked and disregarded in the genre by fans and executives. Black Opry wants to change that and invite you to discover, support and enjoy the Black artists that make magic in this space. The Black Opry Revue showcases the diversity in sound and stories that Black artists offer to these genres.

Dayton Porchfest delivers 50 free concerts this Saturday

August 16, 2022 By LIbby Ballengee

This Saturday, don’t miss the 6th annual Dayton Porchfest, a free neighborhood music festival in St Anne’s Hill Historic Neighborhood. This beloved community-building event is facilitated by The Collaboratory, a civic think tank that launches exciting new projects from idea to reality.

One of those ideas is Porchfest, which is held on International Play Music on a Porch Day. The event offers 6 hours of free live music held on porches throughout the St. Anne’s Hill neighborhood. It’s a lovely opportunity to meet the neighborhood and celebrate the quality and diversity of the Dayton music scene.

Dayton Porchfest was founded in 2017, inspired by the original Porchfest, which was started in 2007 in Ithaca, NY, and Larchmere Porchfest in Cleveland, which was started in 2009. Today there are over 150 Porchfests throughout the United States and Canada. Dayton was 94.

Dayton has a rich musical history and active music scene, which continues today. Dayton Porchfest is committed to reflecting that in its selection of musical artists, from funk and blues to indie rock and jazz, classical and country, to bluegrass and old-timey that has deep Appalachian traditions here. We also celebrate the ethnic diversity of the region, a reflection of our “Welcome Dayton” spirit that has contributed to a significant influx of immigrants and refugees over the past decade. The St. Anne’s neighborhood welcomes all Daytonians to join in this celebration!

Dayton Porchfest is an initiative of The Collaboratory (www.daytoncollaboratory.org). This local volunteer organization provides infrastructure for people and organizations to collaboratively develop community initiatives that generate new economic, civic, and creative opportunities and value. The result is a healthier, more thriving region. All proceeds from Dayton Porchfest go to support the work of The Collaboratory. Tips collected at the event go directly to the musicians performing. Please be generous!

Jackie Venson at Levitt Pavilion

August 9, 2022 By Dayton937

Jackie Venson is a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter known for her beautifully complex music and blazing guitar skills. Born and raised in Austin, Texas, Jackie has played to crowds across the world. With the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, the cancellation of her entire tour schedule, and the wave of social change sweeping across the country, Jackie committed herself to releasing more music than ever before, connecting with her fans directly, and speaking up about the change she wanted to see in her city and country. Her latest album ‘Love Transcends’, released in September 2021, is her first collection of music to focus on a central genre-the blues. With the uncertainty of the times we’re living in, one thing holds true for Jackie Venson – she’s going to play her music, speak her truth, and spread as much joy as she can do it.

Troy’s Downtown Concert Series Features Berachah Valley Bluegrass Band

August 7, 2022 By Dayton937

The Berachah Valley band has been a bluegrass staple in our area for over 17 years. Troy’s downtown concert series, “Fridays on Prouty” will be bringing them back again in 2022 with a new show! This classic band was asked to be the sound of bluegrass for the movie “Mayberry Man.” The movie is a recreation of the beloved Andy Griffith Show which takes place in Mayberry, USA. The experience was an exciting time for the band. They were part of the touring variety show that traveled the country promoting the movie.

On August 12, 2022 at 7:30 pm they will share the variety show and movie with Troy, Ohio. Berachah Valley will play favorites from the movie, the cast will be on hand with jokes and stories. A showing of the movie Mayberry Man will begin about 9 pm after the concert and variety show. This fun-packed night honoring Berachah Valley bluegrass band and their new movie is free to the public. Reservations are not necessary. Bring a lawn chair, your best friend and plenty of good wishes for Berachah Valley.

Fridays on Prouty concerts are a collaboration between the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center and Troy Main Street. Concerts are free to the public thanks to a generous grant from the Troy Foundation. Join us in the center of lovely downtown Troy, Ohio at Prouty Plaza. Bring a lawn chair and your best friend.  For more information on the Fridays on Prouty concert series visit: www.troyhayner.org/fridays-on-prouty
