Elijah Craig – Old Fashioned Week Celebrated at 13 Local Bars

October 13, 2022 By Dayton937

In 1789, Rev. Elijah Craig did not set out to become the Father of Bourbon when he first charred oak barrels, but his ingenuity proved a pivotal moment for Bourbon. Less than twenty years later, a spark ignited with what was first known as ‘the whiskey cocktail,’ paving the way for cocktail culture. The renaissance of classic cocktails over the last two decades rejuvenated desire for spirit-forward cocktails that are both balanced and complex, a setting ripe to celebrate an Elijah Craig Old Fashioned.

Elijah Craig Old Fashioned Week takes place Oct 14 – 23 and is an annual celebration of this classic Bourbon cocktail, featuring events in bars around town. Together, we’re raising a glass and some funds for a great cause. Join us for an Old Fashioned night out! The interactive map lets you search for participating bars and restaurants in your neighborhood, create your own itinerary, and share it with friends. Cheers!

The inaugural Old Fashioned Week was launched in  2020  raising funds for the Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation (RWCF), an advocacy and action nonprofit created by and for restaurant workers. This year funds raised will benefit The Southern Smoke Foundation. A crisis relief organization that provides a safety net for food and beverage industry workers nationwide: whether they are facing physical or mental health challenges; rebuilding from storm damage and other natural disasters; or recovering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

October 11, 2022 By Dayton937

The 8/4 Memorial Committee is seeking artists, artist teams, designers, or architects to design a public artwork to serve as a memorial for the victims of the tragic events that took place in The Oregon District neighborhood of Dayton, Ohio, on August 4, 2019. Eligible artists are invited to provide the necessary information via The Contemporary Dayton’s website at https://codayton.org/events/call-for-entry/. The submission deadline is December 5, 2022. The RFQ and project expectations were carefully established following several public input surveys and meetings. The goal of the public artwork will be to memorialize the lives lost in the 8/4 event as well as everyone affected; include community engagement to inspire hope, unity, and healing; and provide a meditative space for reflection and remembrance.

“This memorial will play a major role in the healing of our community,” said Sandy Hunt, co-chair of the 8/4 Memorial Committee. “Survivors, family members of victims, and the general public all provided us with their perspectives on what this artwork will mean to those who were affected by the tragedy. It’s important to us to provide something accessible and meaningful to support everyone’s recovery.”

To do that, please include the main image, title of the artwork, the medium, the dimensions, and date created or installed. These images will serve as an overview of your work relevant to this RFQ. Submission information can be found at https://codayton.org/events/call-for-entry/. The Co will host two artist information sessions to be held at Dayton Metro Library Main Branch on Thursday, October 20, and at the Wesley Community Center on Saturday, November 5. The RFP process allows the 8/4 Memorial Committee to attract as many qualified artists as possible and streamline the final selection process to ensure a successful project.

“This memorial is about connection and coming together,” said Sandra K. Gudorf, co-chair of the 8/4 Memorial Committee. “We are looking for an artist or group of artists who can understand how this event affected our community and how they can help us pay tribute to the nine people we lost and the countless others who were impacted.”

Up to five semi-finalists will be selected through the Request for Qualifications. Each artist or artist team selected to proceed to the second phase of the project will be paid to develop and present full proposals. Heywood Banks- Clean & Clever Comedy at Wiley’s This Weekend

October 11, 2022 By Dayton937

Heywood Banks is simply one-of-a-kind, almost impossible to describe, with a style his very own. Equal parts genius and buffoon, this songwriter-comic-singer-poet-musician has become a cult hero and a pop icon, with a show that appeals to college students, stoners, businessmen, yuppies, rednecks, punks, kids or your grandmother.

Heywood intersperses his humorous observations of life with twisted, inventive, bizarre songs, sung and played in a variety of styles, from folk, to country to rock to pop, and way beyond. You have to be pretty smart to get Heywood at his deepest level (he demands a high level of pop culture literacy), but you can also enjoy him just for his vocal style impersonations, expert musicianship and just plain silliness.

A regular on the Bob & Tom radio show, his witty tunes seem to weave their way into your brain.   Here’s one of him most popular:

Heywood has been featured in “Rolling Stone Magazine” and “People Magazine.” He won First Place in the Johnnie Walker Comedy Search Contest. Heywood Banks has appeared on A&E’s “Evening at the Improv,” MTV’s “1/2 Hour Comedy Hour,” CNN’s “Hollywood Minute,” “Caroline’s Comedy Hour,” “Entertainment Tonight,” “Showtime Comedy Club Network,” “Dr. Demento Show,” “12th Annual HBO Young Comedians Special with Paul Rodriguez.”
