Dayton Opera Presents the World Premiere of Finding Wright

February 20, 2022 By Dayton937

Dayton Opera presents a world-premiere opera created and presented by a team of four of the most talented individuals in today’s opera world, all of whom just happen to be women! This captivating story was sparked as librettist Andrea Fellows Fineberg and stage director Kathleen Clawson uncovered a unique gem in Dayton’s past right in the middle of Dayton’s Woodland Cemetery‒the grave stone of Katharine Wright.

Finding Wright is the story of human connection and emotion, centering on the life of Katharine Wright, sister of two of the most famous Wrights of Dayton, and in fact, the world: brothers of flight Orville and Wilbur Wright. With music by award-winning composer Laura Kaminsky, performed by the Dayton Philharmonic under the direction of conductor Susanne Sheston, Finding Wright is the first-ever full-length opera commissioned for and presented by Dayton Opera.

Finding Wright traces two parallel narratives: one of Katharine Wright, sister of famed Orville and Wilbur Wright; and one of Charlotte (Charlie) Tyler, a 21st century aerospace engineer and academic who is grieving her thwarted career and the recent loss of her husband.

The opera shifts back and forth between Katharine Wright in the early 1900’s and Charlie Tyler in the present day in what the librettist calls “fractured time.” The story follows Katharine from her carefree younger days to the emptiness after the death of her mother to her role in propelling forward the world-changing discovery and invention of her famous brothers, even at the expense of her own ambitions. In the midst of her journey, she falls in love, and her new-found romance drives a wedge between her and her brother Orville. Can this rift be resolved?

In present time, Charlie grieves the loss of her young husband and finds herself at a crossroads in her life. At her husband’s funeral, she discovers Katharine’s grave and begins to explore the story of this kindred soul with whom she feels an unexpected connection. By exploring the past and contemplating Katharine’s actions and motivations, Charlie welcomes a new day dawning and begins to discover her own path forward.

Composer Laura Kaminsky has been cited in The Washington Post as “one of the top 35 female composers in classical music.” She frequently addresses critical social and political issues in her work, including sustainability, war, and human rights. Possessing “an ear for the new and interesting” (The New York Times), “her music is full of fire as well as ice, contrasting dissonance and violence with tonal beauty and meditative reflection. It is strong stuff.” (American Record Guide). Her first opera, As One, is the most produced contemporary opera in North America, with close to 50 productions to date in the U.S. as well as across Europe. Kaminsky brings her expertise and emotion to the creation of the music for Finding Wright.

Finding Wright marks the third time that librettist Andrea Fellows Fineberg has written for Dayton Opera, having previously crafted original dialogue for the 2014 production of The Magic Flute and the 2017 production of The Abduction from the Seraglio. Fineberg has served with Santa Fe Opera for over 30 years, holding the position of Director of Community Engagement since 1993. As librettist she has collaborated with John Kennedy on Trinity and Stephen Paulus on Shoes for the Santo Niño. In 2016, UnShakeable, with Joseph Illick, premiered in Santa Fe, and in the outpouring of activities for the commemoration of the Shakespeare 400, was cited by the New York Times. As a collaborative artist, Fineberg has had the privilege of creating and then working with the Academy for the Love of Learning’s Lifesongs¸ writing original musical narratives with individuals in hospice care since its inception in 2007. For six years she served as a national commissioner to UNESCO and as a member of the Obama Arts Policy Committee in 2008 and 2012.

Conductor Susanne Sheston is currently the Chorus Master of the acclaimed Santa Fe Opera, a position she has held since 2008. As Chorus Master, Sheston has collaborated with many of the world’s leading operatic and symphonic conductors. Her work at Santa Fe has included choral preparations for six world premieres and two North American premieres. Sheston was chorus master for the Grammy-award-winning recording (Best Opera Performance, 2019) of The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, recorded live at Santa Fe Opera on the Pentatone label. Her work can also be heard on the 2016 Grammy-nominated recording of Jennifer Higdon’s Cold Mountain. Sheston takes the podium to direct the talented musicians of the Dayton Philharmonic for her first time as they perform together the stunning music of composer Laura Kaminsky.

Kathleen Clawson will be the Stage Director for this important world premiere. As dramaturg, she worked alongside Kaminsky and Fineberg during the development of Finding Wright, helping them to craft the drama of the work. Clawson is making her creative mark at Dayton her first season as Artistic Director, having worked with the company for over twelve years as Stage Director for fifteen performances, as well as appearances on stage as soloist with Dayton Philharmonic.

Commissioned to mark the 60th anniversary of Dayton Opera and Artistic Director Emeritus Thomas Bankston’s 25th season, Finding Wright was moved to 2022 because of the pandemic. Bankston serves as Artistic Advisor for the opera’s premiere.

Making her Dayton Opera debut as lead character Charlie Tyler is mezzo-soprano Amanda Lynn Bottoms. She was most recently engaged with the Santa Fe Opera, covering Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Fillipyevna in Eugene Onegin, Ino in The Lord of Cries. To much acclaim, Bottoms headlined the Collaborative Arts Institute of Chicago Fall 2021 recital series; the opening performance, “Songs of the New World,” was recently named one of the top three Chicago Classical Review’s Best of 2021.

Also making her Dayton Opera debut, mezzo-soprano Blythe Gaissert performs the historic role of the fascinating Katharine Wright. Much in demand for her command of new music, Gaissert has performed world premieres of music by John Adams, Laura Kaminsky, Mikael Karlsson, Robert Paterson, Martin Hennessy, Mohammed Fairouz, Richard Pearson Thomas, Glen Roven, Yotam Haber, Jorge Martin, Tom Cipullo, Renee Favand-See, Gilda Lyons, Jessica Meyer, Gabriel Kahane and more. A true singing actress, she has received critical acclaim for her interpretations of both new and traditional repertoire in opera, concert, and chamber repertoire. Known for her warm tone, impeccable musicianship and technical prowess, Gaissert has been praised by the Denver Post for her “pure, powerful and appealing voice and a forceful stage presence to match.”

Baritone Sean Anderson embraces his first role with Dayton Opera as Katharine Wright’s love interest and eventual husband, Harry Haskell. Classically trained for the Shakespearian stage, Anderson has received high recognition from Opera News as having a voice of “warm vocal velvet,” and he is diversely adept onstage in opera, musical theater, and classical drama. His repertoire list includes dozens of leading roles ranging from Verdi to Mozart to Gilbert and Sullivan, and his magnetic stage presence and authoritative voice have won him critical acclaim for both comedy and tragedy.

Performing the roles of the famous brothers of flight Orville and Wilbur Wright are tenors Dominic Armstrong and Christian Sanders, respectively. Dominic Armstrong returns to Dayton Opera for his third appearance after his 2017 role of Don José in the beloved Carmen. Dominic has quickly established himself internationally as an artist of superb and distinguished musicality and characterization. Christian Sandershas an operatic range that encompasses stirring roles in works from the classic repertoire to modern operas and works by living composers. Sanders has been hailed by Bill Eadie of SanDiego.com as a “…voice whose color belies his age. Someone to watch!”

Pam Knauert Lavarnway is the creative mind behind the unique scenic design, as the story shifts back and forth from present day to the classical historic time period of the early 1900s. Costumes from these two distinctly different time periods are the work of Bartlett Blair. Resident lighting designer John Rensel will light this production. Wig and Make-up Designers are the talented Cassandra Brake and Thomas Venditelli.

Join the Dayton Opera at the Schuster Center this February for this exhilarating world premiere. Find your path by looking back into the life of Katharine Wright, the inspirational sister of the ingenious inventors of flight who propelled them…and our history…forward!

Performances will be Friday, February 25, 2022 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, February 27, 2022 at 3 p.m. in the Mead Theatre of the Schuster Center, Dayton Opera, under the leadership of Artistic Director Kathleen Clawson.. This opera will be sung in English with English surtitles.

Miamisburg Merchants Association Host Bourbon Raffle

February 19, 2022 By Dayton937

For the second year in a row, the Miamisburg Merchants Association (MMA) are hosting a Bourbon Raffle to help raise funds for our Miamisburg businesses. Raffle tickets are $50 each and the bottles are divided into 5 prize levels.

Package #1

Nashville Barrel Company Private Barrel:  Is a 9 year Rye, the oldest barrel NBC releases.  When we went to buy our first barrels of whiskey, we bought bourbon, but the first barrels we bottled were actually rye. This rye is comprised of 95% rye and 5% malted barley varying in age statements and available for picking. Ask anyone who’s tried one…they don’t disappoint.

Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch 2021 Barrel Strength:  Non-chill filtered and bottled at a 114.2 proof, the 2021 Limited Edition Small Batch features a 16-year-old Bourbon from the OBSV recipe, a 14-year-old OBSQ, a 12-year-old OESK, and a 16-year-old OESV.

WhistlePig 12 year Old World Rye Private Barrel:  WhistlePig’s vanguard of finishing lies within our Old World Rye, Aged 12 Years. A Rye styled by Old World sensibilities at 86-proof. This whiskey is the marriage of three finishes, each with their own distinctive flavor profiles. After maturing for 12 years in New American Oak, the spirit is divvied into one of three barrels –Madeira (30%), Sauternes (60%) and Port (10%). Finished to perfection and blended into a symphony of flavor. It started as a grand experiment and ended as the first Rye whiskey of its kind, giving you Rye in all its glory.. and then some. Just like a fine wine, our Old World Rye’s rich fruit and spice notes are great with an epic meal.

Smooth Ambler Old Scout Private Barrel:  Smooth Ambler Old Scout Bourbon – Custom is a hand selected barrel of 5-year old, high-rye content (36%) bourbon, bottled at cask strength, without chill filtration. The customer chooses from a selection of unique barrels and decides which barrel fits their desired flavor profile. The barrel is bottled with a custom stamp on each bottle and hand-signed.  Mashbill: 60% Corn, 36% Rye, 4% Malt. A high-rye bourbon.  Distillation Process: Continuous column distillation. Aging: Approximately 5 years old, non-chill filtered.

Stagg Jr. Batch 15:   Each year, Buffalo Trace releases two batches of Stagg Jr bourbon. Stagg Jr. is the lowest priced offering of any barrel strength bottle from Buffalo Trace. It wears no age statement (though it is rumored to have barrels as young as 5 years old and as old as 10 years old) and is non-chill filtered. Batch 15 is technically the first batch of 2021 because Batch 14 was first recorded for sale in December 2020.  For its relatively short life, Stagg Jr has impressed fans with its powerful punch of flavors. It is not as unique as other bourbons but everything it does, it does well. You can usually expect a mouthful of cherries along with lots of heat and a nice sweetness. Tannins like oak and tobacco can be found, but not as much as in a bottle of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof (which is its main competitor).

Woodford Reserve LTD Release Series 16:  But the main draw was that the blend was largely made up of 11 and 17 year-old barrels. And while it’s not talked about much, I have no doubt that some barrels as young as 4 or 5 years old also made it in the blend too.  Having barrels that were allowed to age this long is extremely rare for any Brown-Forman brand (of which Woodford is a part of) because they use heat-cycled warehouses.  These warehouses age whiskey faster than traditional methods involving only mother nature. Since more bourbon evaporates with every heat cycle it goes through, it typically reaches full maturity in half the time of a standard distiller.   If you didn’t know already, Woodford Reserve and Old Forester typically pull their barrels for bottling at around 4 to 6 years old. Anything older than that runs the risk of it being empty when it’s time to dump it.

Woodford Reserve LTD Batch 17:  The Five-Malt Stouted Mash is said to be a ‘rich and darkly robust’ expression of Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskey.  “Five-Malt Stouted Mash is an expression unlike any other we’ve released before,” master distiller Chris Morris said.  “The rich, roasted malty stout flavours mingle with bright touches of baked fruit, crisp spices, and orange zest for a unique Woodford Reserve experience.”   In Kentucky, a fermented grain mash is traditionally called ‘distiller’s beer’, with distillation converting the liquid into whiskey once barrelled. The Five-Malt Stouted Mash contains flavours of a traditional heavy-style beer.

Russell’s Reserve Private Barrel:  Is a 9 year aged bourbon, aged in warehouse S on the 5th Floor.  Crafted in the birthplace of bourbon with techniques dating back to pre-Prohibition, Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel Bourbon is matured in the deepest No. 4 alligator char barrels. Individually bottled at barrel proof and non-chill filtered to guarantee maximum flavor, each barrel has its own personality yet still captures our signature toffee and vanilla tones. Rich oaky notes meet an intense spiciness, which creates a robust taste that is best experienced right out of the bottle.

Package #3

Reservoir Rye:  In the crowded world of “High Ryes” on the market,we are proud to offer the highest with a 100% rye mash bill. Sourced from just outside Richmond’s city limits, our rye provides an intense, sharply spiced profile that is not too sweet.

Blood Oath Pact 7:  A masterful union of three well-bred bourbons. One, a 14-year extra-aged ryed bourbon. Two, an 8-year ryed bourbon. And three, another 8-year ryed bourbon, finished in sauternes wine casks from the Bordeaux region of France for a balance of sweetness with additional spice.

Maker’s Mark Honey Crisp Blossom:  A popular small batch bourbon, produced at the Maker’s Mark distillery in Loretto, Kentucky. Maker’s Mark is a wheated bourbon, first introduced in 1953 by “Bill” Samuels Snr, produced with the assistance on none other than a certain Julian ‘Pappy’ Van Winkle. The oak staves used for the final period of maturation were selected by Honeysuckle and comprised 4 “baked American pure,” 2 “seared French cuvee,” 1 “Maker’s Mark 46”, 0 “Roasted French Mocha” and 3 “toasted French spice.”

Booker’s “Boston Batch”:   Every batch of this product carries a name that references the brand’s colorful history. This batch is named after the production site where Booker Noe first started his distilling career. The distillery, now renamed the Booker Noe Distillery, is located in the small community of Boston, Ky. The facility was purchased by the James B. Beam Distilling Co. in the early 1950’s as a second distilling location to increase production capability at the time. Because Boston was removed from the day-to-day of the Booker’s flagship Clermont, Ky. distillery, Booker was able to “experiment with whiskey a bit more and really learn about bourbon-making process,” the company says. “Some may say this is where he found his love of experimentation.” That plant was his life for more than 40 years.

Package #4

1792 Sweet Wheat:  Crafted with sweet and delicate wheat instead of the more traditional rye, this bourbon is quite distinctive from most. The soft wheat delivers a subtle and smooth taste with gentle layers of flavor. Each sip expresses a harmony of sweetness and dryness.

1792 Full Proof Private Barrel:  1792 Full Proof is Barton’s sort of cask strength bourbon. I say “sort of” because full proof doesn’t exactly mean cask strength, but rather the white dog’s barrel entry proof, in this case 125 proof. Technicalities aside, 125 proof is virtually cask strength as most cask strength bourbons are 110-130 proof (55-65% ABV) anyways.

Blanton’s Private Barrel:   Aged for 6 to 8 years. It is aged in Warehouse H at Buffalo Trace, which is the only metal-cladded warehouse at Buffalo Trace and was commissioned for construction by one of the distillery’s early leaders, Albert B. Blanton, shortly after the end of the Prohibition era. Being metal, the warehouse transfers heat quicker than brick warehouses, which allows for more rapid aging.

Weller Antique:  Has a balanced and full-bodied flavor to satisfy your taste buds. This spirit originates from the forward-thinking mind of the distiller William Larue Weller, the first to use wheat instead of rye in some of his whiskey recipes.

Package #5

Michter’s Fort Nelson Select Rye:  hailing from one of America’s first distillers, this whiskey is made from the highest quality American Rye and matured in a hand selected charred white oak barrel. It is then further mellowed by their signature filtration.

Michter’s Fort Nelson Select Bourbon:  is made from a carefully selected mashbill that features the highest quality American corn. It is then matured to the peak of perfection.

Michter’s Barrel Strength Rye:  A single barrel product, each barrel of Michter’s US1 Barrel Strength Rye is bottled at its particular alcohol level at the time of bottling. The majority of barrels in the releases range from 107 to 112 proof. To savor it is a unique experience for anyone who enjoys rye whiskey.

Mammoth 12 yr Single Barrel Rye:  With an aggressive nose of spice, namely cloves and nutmeg, you’ll know well before the first sip that this 12-year-old is anything but shy. Of course, that’s to be expected at 62.5% ABV. An undiluted sip brings a biting (but still incredibly pleasant) mouthful of buttered and honey-dipped toast generously dusted with cinnamon. With a few drops of water, the honey challenges the butter for prominence.

You must be 21 years of age to purchase a ticket. Tickets can be purchased from now until March 3 online.  Winners will be drawn on March 4.

WSU Presents “The Gondoliers”

February 18, 2022 By Dayton937

Wright State Theatre presents Gilbert and Sullivan’s mistaken identity musical farce, THE GONDOLIERS in the Herbst Theatre from February 18-27.  Written in 1889 by the great founders of English Musical Comedy, Sir Arthur Sullivan and Sir W.S. Gilbert, THE GONDOLIERS is at times as comic as a Saturday Night Live sketch, at other times touching and romantic, and always relentlessly tuneful. Gilbert and Sullivan are the forerunners of some of the greatest writers in the history of Musical Theatre, including Cole Porter, the Gershwins, and Stephen Sondheim. The influences of their comedy and music can be heard in even contemporary musicals like Book of Mormon, Avenue Q and Urinetown.

(seated) Nora DeGreen, Elizabeth Mies, (above) Kyle Channell, Jamie Cordes, Director, Kevin Lausche

The silly story concerns the young bride of the heir to the throne of the fictional kingdom of Barataria who arrives in Venice to join her husband. It turns out, however, that he cannot be identified, since he was entrusted to the care of a drunken gondolier who mixed up the prince with his own son. To complicate matters, the King of Barataria has just been killed. The two young gondoliers must now jointly rule the kingdom until the aged nurse of the prince can be brought in to determine which of them is the rightful king. Moreover, when the young queen arrives to claim her husband, she finds that the two gondoliers have both recently married local girls. A last complicating factor is that she, herself, is in love with another man. Though many audience members have seen The Pirates of Penzance or The Mikado, The Gondoliers is a rarer trat and is Gilbert and Sullivan’s last great hit, running for more than two years in London.

The Gondoliers is directed by Jamie Cordes (Human Race’s Airness, Wright State’s If/Then), who says, “Taking a break from contemporary musical theatre, the students have the opportunity to sing a beautiful, funny and exciting score unplugged. The Gondoliers offers a chance for the students to embody grand characters in a world of outlandish circumstances. The intimate Herbst Theatre provides the perfect place to experience light opera.  This production should prove to be a wonderful marriage of singing, movement and acting with elements of Monty Python and a smattering of the surreal humor from the 1980 film, Airplane. If you enjoy that, you will most likely love the writing of Gilbert and Sullivan.” The Gondoliers is Music Directed by Matt Ebright (Staff Musical Director) and Choreographed by Senior Musical Theatre major, Nora DeGreen.

Patrons, cast and crew are required to wear masks at all times. Seating for this production is limited to sixty patrons per performance.

Tickets can be purchased at www.wright.edu/theatre.

The 20 Best Restaurants in All of Ohio – Amber Rose #3

February 16, 2022 By Dayton937

Money Inc recently released a list of  The 20 Best Restaurants in All of Ohio.  As author Liz Flynn explained, “over the last decade or so, Ohio’s food scene has exploded, with an ever-increasing number of restaurants hitting the streets of both its biggest cities and sleepiest suburbs. Regardless of whether you prefer fine dining experiences, all-you-can-eat BBQ joints, or chic little bistros, you’ll have no problem finding something to suit. If you’re ready to tap into the region’s bountiful offerings and enjoy some scrumptious food, these are the 20 best restaurants in Ohio to check out.”

The top ranking area restaurant she named was Amber Rose, coming in at #3.  Here’s what she had to say about it:

Amber Rose

3. Amber Rose Restaurant, Dayton

Named one of the best restaurants in Dayton by vacationidea.com, Amber Rose Restaurant is the place to go for some made from scratch European cuisine. Expect a culinary tour of the continent with dishes like Lithuanian Cabbage Rolls, Beef Stroganoff, Warsaw Medley, Hungarian Chicken Paprika, and Hunter Schnitzel. With its cozy ambiance, elegant decor and exquisite collection of global wines, craft beers, and handcrafted cocktails, it’s a lovely place to while away a few hours over a leisurely lunch or dinner.

Also making the list at #6. The Golden Lamb, Lebanon:

The Golden Lamb

If you haven’t got a reason to visit Lebanon, make one up. Once you arrive, head straight for The Golden Lamb. Set in the town’s oldest continuously operated hotel (a place where everyone from Harriet Beecher Stowe to Charles Dickens and Mark Twain to Neil Armstrong has bedded down for the night), the only thing the restaurant has in greater abundance than history is exceptional food. Key dishes not to miss include a slow-roasted beef tenderloin sliced and served with crushed red potatoes with leeks, bacon & aged cheddar, a classic parmesan tomato garnish and cabernet jus and, for something extra comforting on a cold day, the Ohio Fried Chicken Dinner served with skillet gravy, mashed potatoes, and fresh seasonal vegetables.

Making the list at #10:

Spot

10. The Spot To Eat, Sidney

Whoever chose the name for this Sidney hotspot couldn’t have picked a more appropriate name if they’d tried. The Spot To Eat started out as a check wagon over 100 years back, but has since evolved into the kind of classic, 50’s style diner where you wouldn’t be surprised to find the Foz chugging down a milkshake at the bar. It’s not fancy, but it is fun, sporting a tempting range of homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, and an old-fashioned creme pie you’d happily bathe in.

Bonnie Raitt “Just Live That” Tour Comes to The Rose

February 15, 2022 By Dayton937

Bonnie Raitt will return to the live stage with Just Like That… a national tour in 2022 which includes music from her forthcoming, long-awaited studio album, ‘Just Like That…’. Raitt will release her first single off the upcoming album as well as launch a pre-order campaign February 25th. The ‘Just Like That…’ tour includes a stop at Rose Music Center at The Heights for a performance on Wednesday, July 20th with special guest Mavis Staples.

Raitt said, “To celebrate finally being able to play live concerts again by reuniting with my dear friend and inspiration, the great Mavis Staples, is a thrill words can’t really express. Mavis and her band are at the top of their game and I know they feel the same about us. Hope you can experience the magic when we come through on tour this summer!”

Continuing a long-standing tradition in conjunction with The Guacamole Fund and Raitt’sGreen Highway campaign, one dollar from every ticket purchased will be donated to grassroots local, regional, and national organizations whose work focuses on safe and sustainable energy, social justice and human rights, environmental protection, and blues/music education.

ABOUT BONNIE RAITT

Bonnie Raitt is a singer, songwriter and guitarist whose unique style blends blues, R&B, rock, and pop. After 20 years as a cult favorite, she broke through to the top in the early 90s with her GRAMMY-award winning albums, ‘Nick of Time’ and ‘Luck of the Draw,’ which featured hits, “Something To Talk About” and “I Can’t Make You Love Me” among others. The ten-time Grammy winner was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and Rolling Stone named the slide guitar ace one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and one of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time.”

Raitt’s widely-acclaimed 2012 independent release ‘Slipstream’ sold over a quarter-million copies, making it one of the top selling independent albums, and earned Raitt her 10th Grammy Award (Best Americana Album). In February 2016, Raitt released her highly-anticipated 20th album, ‘Dig In Deep’ (Redwing Records.) On tour for much of 2017-2019, Raitt and her band performed overseas in Australia, New Zealand as well as Canada before spending the summers touring as support for James Taylor in stadiums and arenas across the U.S., United Kingdom and Europe.

As known for her lifelong commitment to social activism as she is for her music, Raitt has long been involved with the environmental movement, performing concerts around oil, nuclear power, mining, water and forest protection since the mid 70’s.  She was a founding member of MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) which produced the historic concerts, album and movie NO NUKES and continues to work on safe energy issues in addition to environmental protection, social justice and human rights, as well as creator’s rights and music education.

ABOUT MAVIS STAPLES

Hailed by NPR as “one of America’s defining voices of freedom and peace,” Staples is the kind of once-in-a-generation artist whose impact on music and culture would be difficult to overstate. She’s both a Blues and a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer; a civil rights icon; a GRAMMY Award-winner; a chart-topping soul/gospel/R&B pioneer; a National Arts Awards Lifetime Achievement recipient; and a Kennedy Center honoree. She marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., performed at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, and sang in Barack Obama’s White House. She’s collaborated with everyone from Prince and Bob Dylan to Arcade Fire and Hozier, blown away countless festivalgoers from Newport Folk and Glastonbury to Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo, performed with The Band at The Last Waltz, and graced the airwaves on Fallon, Colbert, Ellen, Austin City Limits, Jools Holland, the GRAMMYs, and more. At a time when most artists begin to wind down, Staples ramped things up, releasing a trio of critically acclaimed albums in her 70’s with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy that prompted Pitchfork to rave that “her voice has only gained texture and power over the years” and People to proclaim that she “provides the comfort of a higher power.”

Tickets will go on sale to the public beginning at 10am on Friday, February 18 at Ticketmaster.com and RoseMusicCenter.com.
