Tickets on Sale Friday for Tori Amos at Taft Theatre

February 1, 2022 By Dayton937

A trailblazing musician, author and activist, Tori Amos has announced a massive North American 2022 tour today, which includes a stop at Taft Theatre in Cincinnati, Ohio on Tuesday, May 24, 2022.

Ocean to Ocean was released digitally and on CD in October and had been made available as a beautiful vinyl package last Friday, January 28. The record received widespread acclaim by fans and media alike, with features spanning Pitchfork, Entertainment Weekly, Stereogum, SPIN and NPR. The record debuted at #2 on the Billboard Current Alternative Albums Chart and #6 on the Billboard Album Sales Chart, marking her tenth “Top 10”appearance.

Ocean to Ocean is Amos’ most personal work in years – an album bursting with warmth and connection, with deep roots in her earliest song writing. As communities around the world suffered the loss of life, live music, travel, and much at all to observe, Tori had a difficult time during the pandemic. She descended to an emotional state lower than she had been to for a long time – but the depths became creative, forcing a return to the kind of introspection she recognized from her debut album Little Earthquakes. The new collection is an expression of kinship and love, of emotional and geographical dislocation. It explores environmental concerns, the restraints of the pandemic for those on the cusp of adulthood, empowerment, loss & healing delivered with Tori’s trademark urgency and passion.

A pioneer across multiple platforms, Tori Amos’ second book RESISTANCE, a New York Times Bestseller, was released in 2020. Unrepentant Geraldines was her eighth studio album to debut in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 Chart. Her decidedly feminist stage musical The Light Princess debuted at #2 on the Broadway Billboard Chart. Nominated for multiple Grammy Awards, she was the first major label artist to offer a single for download, has had her songs turned into graphic novels and has produced ground-breaking videos throughout her career. In late 2016 she released the title song “Flicker” to the acclaimed Netflix documentary Audrie and Daisy, addressing issues of high school rape. A noted humanitarian, Tori was the first public voice for RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network), which is the United States’ largest anti-sexual assault organization and continues to be member of its National Leadership Council.

Tickets will go on sale to the public beginning at 10am on Friday, February 4 at Ticketmaster.com. Tickets can also be purchased without service fees at the Taft Theatre box office during regular box office hours.

Flagship EC program generated $210M in economic impact

February 1, 2022 By Dayton937

Launch Dayton partner the Entrepreneurs’ Center generated $210M in economic impact over the last two years, according to a new report released today.

The 2022 State of Startups in Ohio report is a special supplement in the Dayton Business Journal, Cincinnati Business Courier, Cleveland Business Journal, and Columbus Business First. This report is the result of a collaboration with the Ohio business journals and Ohio’s regional venture development organizations: The Entrepreneurs’ Center, CincyTech, JumpStart, Rev1 Ventures, and TechGrowth Ohio.

These venture development organizations have been a foundation of support and capital for tech-based companies, helping them to generate a $10B economic impact and create more than 10,500 jobs since 2016.

“Ohio startup companies are setting funding records year after year, strengthening the statewide innovative ecosystem,” states a press release. “Startups deliver a significantly larger economic impact than other companies in terms of revenues, investments, jobs, and wages paid.”

Local impact

According to the report, the EC’s Entrepreneurial Services Provider (ESP) Program has generated $210M in economic impact in the Dayton region over the past two years. Last year alone, this portfolio saw a 200% increase in company sales and investments, and achieved significant milestones in their mission to power progress and prosperity, including:

  • Adding 135 portfolio clients
  • Creating 202 new jobs
  • Generating $56M in product sales and $28M in other revenue
  • Raising $15M in external investment capital
  • Launching the Rotunda Investment Fund, a revenue-based investment fund for Dayton-area entrepreneurs and small businesses.

As a result of the EC’s accomplishments over the years, and those of the other highlighted venture development organizations, Ohio ranked 11th among states for fast-growing companies in 2020.

Key highlights

Other key highlights from the report include:

  • 2021 marked the third consecutive year that Ohio companies received over $1 billion in venture capital investment.
  • Ohio’s startup ecosystem has created nearly 11,000 jobs (10,570), with 167 companies funded and $10B in economic impact including $2.87B in exits.
  • Startup success is the key to diversifying regional economies – it allows for expansion into new markets, while also driving innovation within existing industries.
  • Ohio’s remarkable success is the result of an all-in approach in the state – from venture development firms, public and private partners, corporations, investors and entrepreneurs who align to build thriving companies.
  • The impact of Ohio’s startup success reaches far beyond the state, and even the region, as it’s a playbook for what is possible when key constituents align to support the startup ecosystem.
  • Because of Ohio’s entrepreneurs and inventors, the Ohio Third Frontier, and the more than 100 private and public sector partners across the state, Ohio venture development organizations have delivered an astonishing $66 return for every $1 of public funds.

Chinese New Year 2022 – Year of the Tiger

January 30, 2022 By Dayton937

The holiday that’s celebrated by almost two billion people across the world, also known as Chinese New Year and Spring Festival is February 1st.  Though the titles can be used interchangeably, the name Lunar New Year is inclusive to other countries that refer to new year celebrations by different names. Additionally, the holiday has a longstanding connection to the moon.

This is the Year of the Tiger, third in the 12-animal Chinese zodiac cycle. Tigers were born in 2010, 1998, 1986, 1974, 1962, 1950 and so on.

According to superstition, a person born in a particular year takes on the traits of that year’s animal. Laura Lau, co-author of “The Handbook of Chinese Horoscopes,” said people born in the Year of the Tiger tend to be powerful, rebellious, dynamic, adventurous, fiery, impulsive and unpredictable. Tigers also typically have strong ethics, so they’re very passionate about causes.

Tiger years have the potential to be explosive, Lau said. But because 2022 is the Year of the Water Tiger — referring to the five elements (fire, earth, metal, water and wood) that rotate alongside the animal signs — it may be less aggressive. “The water tiger is a more open-minded tiger,” she said.

Lucky Things for Tigers

  • Lucky colours: blue, green
  • Lucky numbers: 1, 3, 7
  • Lucky flowers: plum blossom
  • Lucky directions: north

Unlucky Things for Tigers

  • Unlucky colours: white
  • Unlucky numbers: 4, 9

Looking at where we are now, still in the midst of an uncertain pandemic, she thinks that there’s a lot of pent-up energy, and people need to express themselves.

“So I think that’s part of the potential drama of the year,” she said. “Good comes out of big, passionate expressions. But sometimes it’s tumultuous.”

Many are familiar with the traits and superstitions associated with the Chinese zodiac. Animals across from each other on the zodiac wheel — tigers and monkeys, for example — aren’t supposed to get along, Lau explained.

Killer New Collaboration Beer From Warped Wing.

January 25, 2022 By Dayton937

Warped Wing has just announced their newest collaboration-  Killer Brownie® Brown Ale.
A culinary meld of craft goodness. You will get aromas of deep, rich chocolate up front. Followed up with sips of chocolate, caramel, vanilla and molasses. It’s like a brownie in liquid form. And it’s killer.
The Killer Brownie Company is owned and operated by the same family as Dorothy Lane
Market. What started as one unforgettable fudge-y, gooey, double-layered brownie nestled
with pecans and velvety caramel—The Original—has grown into a robust offering of
gourmet brownie flavors, including seasonal additions.
“Killer Brownie is a Dayton staple and we’ve always wanted to partner with them on a beer.”
said Nick Bowman, VP/Sales & Marketing and Managing Partner at Warped Wing. “This
project has been a few years in the making but here we are and I’m excited to bring forth into
the world our liquid version of the famous Killer Brownie!”, said Bowman.
“The folks at Warped Wing are true masters of their craft.” said Jessica Uttinger, Director of
Marketing and Creative Services at Killer Brownie®. “When we began discussing a
collaboration in 2019, it was immediately clear—they would create a brew that mirrors the
decadence Killer Brownie® is known for. Their commitment to quality is matched only by
their love of community, which made them ideal partners to work with. Gathering people
together to share joyful moments over food and drink is something they’ve long been known
for, and it’s an honor to have the Killer Brownie® name on one of their cans.” said Uttinger.
Killer Brownie Brown Ale will launch in the Dayton & Springboro Taprooms on Thursday,
February 3rd – just ahead of Valentine’s Day. It will also be available at Warped Wing’s new
Taproom location opening on Friday, February 4th in Mason, OH. The beer will be available
on draught for on-site consumption and in 6-pack 12 oz. cans to go. Custom branded glasses
will be available for purchase in the Warped Wing Taprooms (while supplies last) to make for
an unforgettable and commemorative experience.

Wright State Theatre presents Pulitzer Prize-winning drama SWEAT

January 24, 2022 By Dayton937

Wright State Theatre will present Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize winning drama, Sweat, as its first play of 2022, running February 3-13th. As if lifted from our own local headlines, this gripping drama takes us into the lives of middle-American industrial workers facing the end of their livelihoods as their factory jobs disappear and their families and friendships struggle to survive. Lynn Nottage has written an exquisite, devastating contemporary tragedy. Set, in one of the poorest cities in America (Reading, Pennsylvania), a group of down-and-out factory workers struggle to keep their present lives in balance, ignorant of the financial devastation looming in their near future. Based on Nottage’s extensive research and interviews with residents of Reading, Sweat is a bracing and topical reflection of the present and poignant outcome of America’s economic decline.

Shaun Patrick Tubbs

Visiting Guest Director Shaun Patrick Tubbs says, “SWEAT talks about people who don’t often get a voice. Those are the ones who tend to be affected most by the world around them. Often the choices we make are for survival, not because we want them. But, it’s because we feel they are our only choice. The truth of the matter is, until you’ve had everything you know taken away, you don’t know what choice you would make. And that’s what they’re going through in this play.”

Tubbs is a New York City-based director whose work has been seen at the Juilliard School, New York Theatre Workshop, The Signature Theatre (Arlington, VA), and many other theatres and opera companies nationally. He is also a graduate of Wright State’s BFA Acting program and has been seen locally in productions at The Human Race Theatre Company, among others. When asked about what it’s like to be back at his alma mater, Mr. Tubbs says, “I thought it would feel that so much time had passed – given that it’s been just about twenty years since I graduated. But it doesn’t feel that way. Instead, I feel I’ve stepped into somewhere familiar that’s reminded me of why I do what I do, because it’s about learning how to learn. My hope is that I can help these students realize the gap between where they are now and where they want to be – their dream – is much smaller than I thought it was when I was a student at Wright State.”

Sweat features scenic design by guest artist Michael Brewer, costume design by student Taylor Dumas, and Lighting Design by Matthew Benjamin.

Playwright Lynn Nottage is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner for Drama, receiving the award in 2009 for Ruined and again in 2017 for Sweat. Her other major works include the play, Intimate Apparel, now being adapted as an opera, composed by Ricky Ian Gordon, having its premiere at the Lincoln Center Theatre. She is also the librettist for the new Broadway musical, MJ: The Musical, recounting the life of pop sensation, Michael Jackson.
