SPACE: A Journey to Our Future – AF Museum’s Newest Exhibit
A new interactive exhibit designed to spark imaginations by igniting the desire for space exploration and discovery, and inspire new generations of explorers to dream of the possibilities that lie ahead, will be on display at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force from Jan. 28-Sept. 6.

The exhibit, titled “SPACE: A Journey to Our Future,” is being provided by Evergreen Exhibitions and allows visitors to experience explorations of the past as well as our future destiny in space. Highlights of the exhibit include touching actual rocks from the lunar surface of the moon and the red planet of Mars; exploring a Mars Base Camp while walking through a full-size habitat and work pod; taking a spin on a centrifuge that is powered like a bicycle; getting an up-close look at a wide range of artifacts from the space program; and looking into future explorations of the universe.
Note: COVID-19 safety precautions will include issuing gloves to each visitor interacting with the exhibit, as well as cleaning and sanitizing the exhibit throughout each day. Visitors ages three and up are required to wear masks during their visit to the museum.
The exhibit, which will be located in the museum’s fourth building, features content provided by NASA and the National Science Teachers Association, and introduces visitors to generations of dreamers and thinkers who have at times risked their lives to provide a better understanding of who we are and how we fit into the universe around us. Visitors will also meet today’s explorers who are on the forefront of the search for answers to questions about the universe including how to protect it and what life exists out there.
According to National Museum of the U.S. Air Force Education Chief Mike Brimmer, the exhibit ties in perfectly to the museum’s mission of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, and complements the permanent space exhibits already on display, which include space suits, rockets, a Space Shuttle exhibit, satellites, capsules and many more space related artifacts.
“STEM education and inspiring youth to pursue careers in these fields is the heart of our mission at the museum, and space is a topic that keeps the interest and attention of almost everyone,” said Brimmer. “Exhibits such as this provide students and visitors of all ages with an exciting, hands-on way to learn; supports many of the education standards that are being delivered in classrooms; and can even serve as a catalyst for making amazing achievements in their own chosen professions someday.”
Local Artist Spreading Love Through Art
Prolific Local Artist Mike Elsass is working overtime to give back to the local community by launching a new charity project to benefit Dayton-area nonprofits.

Elsass announced the project this week, when he told his followers on social media if they could provide proof of a donation to a local nonprofit, he would reward the contribution with a gift of art. The idea picked up momentum quickly, and Elsass has since implemented a structure to best support the collaborative project.
Patrons can email [email protected] with proof of a donation to a local charity. Contributions more than $50 in value will receive an email notification to be printed and taken to Elsass’ studio at Front Street, where they can be exchanged for an original piece of art valued at $150-$300.
Elsass said the project was an effort to keep up momentum for local nonprofits in the wake of the global pandemic, which continues to have a devastating effect on small businesses, as well as local charities. The project is designed to keep people enthusiastic about the art community in Dayton and also show the commitment of the arts to continue working collaboratively throughout the community.
The project will continue until March 21. Proof of donations will only be accepted at the Mike Elsass Charity Project email address, and contributors must present the email response, as well as valid ID to pick out their art at Front Street, which they can do from 9 am to 3 pm daily or during First Friday or Third Sunday events.
DPAA presents Beethoven 8 and Florence Price
The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra is thrilled to be back on stage in the Schuster Center with a live audience for their first Masterworks Concert of the New Year!
The concert opens with Florence Price’s Violin Concerto No. 2. Price once wrote in a letter to conductor Serge Koussevitzky, “To begin with I have two handicaps – those of sex and race. I am a woman; and I have some Negro blood in my veins,” adding “I would like to be judged on merit alone.” (www.npr.com) Merit, indeed, as her talent sparkles in this beautiful work.
Concertmaster Jessica Hung takes center stage to perform Price’s composition. Then, continuing our two-year celebration of the 250th Anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, the DPO performs his Symphony No. 8, a short, spirited work composed between two much more famous symphonies, yet a definite force in its own right that celebrates the composer’s playful side.

Dayton Pizza Factory To Compete in ORA Fundraiser
The Ohio Restaurant Association Education Foundation announces the launching of statewide fundraising campaign to benefit Ohio Restaurant Employee Relief Fund
From Monday, January 25 to Sunday, January 31, the Ohio Restaurant Association Education Foundation (ORAEF) is collaborating with pizza operators and restauranteurs with generous hearts on a statewide fundraiser, called Pizza with a Purpose, to benefit the Ohio Restaurant Employee Relief Fund.
Participating pizza operators across the Buckeye state will donate $1.00 per pepperoni pizza sold to the Fund, which provides grants to restaurant, foodservice and hospitality employees financially impacted by the pandemic.
The number of pizzas sold will be tracked, the individual location that sells the most pizzas will be recognized as “Best Pepperoni Pizza” in Ohio and awarded the coveted “Golden Pizza” slice trophy.
Currently, more than 250 operators and restauranteurs with over 100 locations total have signed up to participate, including the following:

“We’re incredibly honored and excited to be a part of this effort to raise awareness and funds for restaurant employees that are hurting during this difficult time. Getting pizza operators across the state to come together for a great cause is something that is the heart of every business owner that cares about their community and its people,” said Ryan Rose, president & CEO of Romeo’s Pizza Franchise, one of many participating operators. Rose is a member of the ORA & Education Foundation board of directors.
“We are so thankful for all of the pizza operators participating to help raise funds for those in need,” said John Barker, ORA president & CEO. “The need is severe. During the pandemic, we’ve conducted polls about the health of restaurants across the state to assess the devastating impacts of COVID-19 on the industry. Recent poll numbers reveal that at current capacity, 74% of Ohio restaurant operators believe they will be forced to close within one year and 82% of respondents did not break even in 2020. Additionally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics just released numbers that the restaurant industry lost 372,000 jobs nationwide in the month of December alone and is down 2.4 million jobs since March 2020.”
Even with the vaccine distribution in the early stages, Ohio’s 585,000 restaurant and foodservice employees are still struggling to find work due to many furloughs and are in financial distress.
“Since its launch in April 2020, the Relief Fund has awarded more than 1,300 grants to use for housing, living and medical expenses, and fundraised over $400,000 for employees in need,” said Patty Halper, Executive Director of the ORA Education Foundation. “Pizza with a Purpose is one of the many ways the ORAEF and generous operators are supporting them and we look forward to the promotion later this month.”

Pizza enthusiasts can learn more here and contribute to the cause through participating in Pizza with a Purpose or by donating directly to the fund at OhioRestaurantsRelief.org.

MetroParks Expands Heart Healthy Trails Initiative
Five Rivers MetroParks has expanded its Heart Healthy Trails initiative by designating two new trails — one at Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark and one at Englewood MetroPark — as part of the initiative.
MetroParks’ new Heart Healthy Trails are:
- Wegeryn Gardens MetroPark’s Marie Aull Trail (1301 E. Siebenthaler Ave): This natural surface trail is an easy hike on flat ground. This trail is a one-mile loop and allows walkers to discover a variety of native trees and many opportunities to spot wildlife.
- Englewood MetroPark red trail loop (4361 W. National Rd.): This 1-mile trail loop is a natural surface trail that’s easy to traverse. This trail takes you along the lake and through beautiful wooded areas. Make your hike a little longer and visit such points of interest as Oaks and Patty falls.

The Heart Healthy Trails initiative is designed to help people improve their physical and mental health outdoors. It was launched in fall 2020, when three existing trails were designated as Heart Healthy Trails.
According to the American Heart Association, just 30 to 40 minutes of exercise a few times a week will improve heart health. Additionally, exercising outdoors provides benefits traditional gym workouts do not, including a reduction of depression and stress, an increase in vitamin D, and more.
Heart Healthy Trails make it easier for people to exercise outdoors because they’re:
- Easy to moderate
- 1 to 2.5 miles long
- Walkable at a brisk pace
- Marked every quarter mile to help users track their pace
“These are easy, entry-level trails on paved or flat surfaces without a lot of elevation change,” said Angie Sheldon, MetroParks outdoor recreation coordinator. “Signage on the trails also helps people start walking outdoors as part of a heart-healthy lifestyle. Each trail is a little different, depending on the location and length, so people can try them all or pick a favorite.”
The American Heart Association recommends walking at a brisk pace, working toward walking at least 2.5 miles per hour or 24 minutes per mile.
MetroParks’ other Heart Healthy Trails are:
- Wolf Creek Trail (start at Olde Town Depot, intersection of Wolf Creek Pike/Main Street and Broadway, Trotwood): This paved recreation trail is marked every quarter mile, so users know when to turn around to get the distance they desire. The trail is marked for a 2-mile walk (1 mile out and 1 mile walking back). Those who wish to continue along the trail can visit Sycamore State Park.
- Island MetroPark (101 E. Helena St., Dayton): This trail is a paved 0.65-mile loop around the perimeter of the park. Trail users will enjoy landscaped beds, views of the Stillwater River and “Ashzilla,” one of the biggest trees in MetroParks. Located near the parking lot, “Ashzilla” is a large white ash tree. Walk the loop two or three times to get the recommended 30 minutes of exercise.
- Germantown MetroPark (6206 Boomershine Rd., Germantown): Users will trek/walk new natural surface trails at the park. The Heart Healthy Trail includes portions of the purple, brown and orange trail loops, totaling 1.7 miles. Trail users can connect to Germantown MetroPark’s extensive trail system via the orange trial.
The Heart Healthy Trails are featured in MetroParks’ mobile app, powered by OuterSpatial, allowing trailgoers to easily navigate the trails, locate amenities and more. Download the app at www.metroparks.org/mobile.

Campaign to ‘Make Screen Time Reading Time’ Launches Today
Click! CaptionsON is a new national reading campaign that educates families and schools to leave closed captioning (subtitles) ON during screen time to boost reading skills. Kids see the action, hear the words, see the words appear in the text at the bottom of the screen, and read along to improve literacy skills while still having fun and enjoying screen time.

The Campaign launches by mailing over 3,500 Click! CaptionsON Reading Kits to educate families on the benefits of closed captioning. To follow is a coordinated social media campaign featuring video testimonials from “I am Caption.Cool” Literacy Champions – staunch advocates of literacy and lovers of reading who support the Click! CaptionsON campaign; improving reading skills when reading scores are at an all-time low and screen time is increasing exponentially. Click here to view C.C Literacy Champion’s video: Cassie Barlow: President of the Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education.
Captions are free and easy to use when not reading books – making joining the Caption.Cool campaign a win- win for kids, parents, and teachers. Virtually all shows are captioned, including YouTube, Netflix, Disney, and games like Fortnite. “The sad reality is that 65% of American children are not proficient in reading, and with COVID-19 restrictions, kids are ‘glued’ to screens 5,6,7 hours a day. Screen time is increasing, and reading skills are shrinking!” said Leib Lurie, Caption.Cool Founder and CEO of #KidsReadNow, which has mailed over one million books. “Students need to read at least one hour a day to improve their literacy skills, which are essential to succeed in all aspects of life.” adds Barbara Lurie, former Reading Teacher and #KidsReadNow and Caption.Cool Co-Founder.
Click! CaptionsON is very visible in the community due to Huntington Billboards’ generous donation of 15 billboards to increase community awareness and campaign visibility. Generous funding from ‘By The Hand Foundation’ and the Miami Valley Foundation has laid the foundation for a pioneering year in literacy!

2nd Annual Winans/Moeller Brew Barn Collaboration Released
Winans Wurtle Nut Brown Ale by Moeller Brew Barn just released their second annual edition. The dessert ale makes its return to both Moeller Brew Barn locations in Maria Stein and Troy, as well as retailers across 35 counties in Ohio. The local brewmaster and confectioner’s creation is made with the famous Winans Wurtles
“Winans is excited to welcome the next round of Moeller Brew Barn’s Winans brew. The first creation was really popular and represented the quality of Winans products well. We are excited to taste it soon,” stated Laurie Winans Reiser, owner of Winans Chocolates + Coffees, headquartered in Piqua, Ohio.
At 6.3% ABV, Winans Wurtle Nut Brown Ale is full of caramel, chocolate and pecan notes and aromas. Its medium body and nutty finish make it the perfect treat as Valentine’s Day approaches.
To accommodate the day of love, the ale’s can has undergone a design refresh. The new label displays a sleek black background with a confetti of hearts and shiny, metallic red detail. Additionally, the can can be personalized with a hand-written note to loved ones. The letter has even been started for you: “You mean the Wurtle to me, and then some.”

“In 2018, we brewed the Winans Meltaway Milk Chocolate Porter, and we learned then what hand-crafting chocolates was all about. We’ve built upon our collaboration brew, and the new personalized-option can design takes it one step further,” said Nick Moeller, Moeller Brew Barn founder. “I know what I’ll be getting my wife for Valentine’s Day, and hopefully she knows what to get for me.”
Moeller Brew Barn opened its doors in Maria Stein in 2015 with a second location in Troy in 2019, while Winans has been serving Ohio for four generations. This January marks the second year that both Ohio-built companies have joined forces to create the rich and nutty, Winans Wurtle Nut Brown Ale.
