Food Service Coming to The Barrel House

November 29, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

A new option for food is coming to The Barrel House downtown Dayton! Katie Marks, best known for the The Wicked ‘Wich of Dayton, is debuting  a new food truck operation called Griller B’s, that will be located in the parking lot of The Barrel House.  The name is  a small nod to the hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan,  which is a favorite of The Barrel House owners, Gus & Sara Stathes.

Starting out, Griller B’s will be open Thursday from 5pm-9pm, then Friday and Saturday 5pm-11pm. This way, during peak hours people can still experience great beer on draft without having to leave the premises for food, and also enjoy a great food truck menu without waiting in the cold. The menu will consist of burgers, quesadillas, nachos, different mac and cheeses etc. along with vegan faire. Every fourth Thursday of the month there will also be a gourmet grilled cheese menu to pair with The Barrel House’s wine tasting.  They expect to  begin service on December 7th. Stay tuned to their Facebook Page for more info!

YWCA’s 2019 Women of Influence Announced

November 29, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

The YWCA Dayton will honor six women, and one organization, during its 2019 Women of Influence awards luncheon on March 21, 2019, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Dayton Convention Center. This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the award; with an average attendance of 800, it is the single largest daytime nonprofit luncheon in Dayton.

Since 1998, the YWCA Dayton WOI Awards have recognized and honored the most influential women in the Dayton area, visionaries and thought leaders who have made a difference in our community through their dedication to the YWCA mission of empowering women, eliminating racism, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

Honorees in the Women of Influence Class of 2019 are:

  • Cassie Barlow, Chief Operating Officer, Southwestern Ohio Council on Higher Education
  • Rabbi Karen Bodney-Halasz, Senior Rabbi, Temple Israel
  • Kim Duncan, Community Philanthropist & Former CEO/Co-Founder, Elements IV Interiors
  •  Neenah Ellis, General Manager, WYSO
  • Chris Saunders, Community Philanthropist & International Advocate
  • Sheri “Sparkle” Williams, Dancer, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company

Additionally, The Dayton Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, will be honored with the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award. The Links is an international nonprofit for professional women of color committed to enriching, sustaining, and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African-Americans and other persons of African ancestry.

Honorees were selected from a pool of more than 105 nominations by YWCA leadership and the volunteer WOI Committee, led this year by Chair Debbie Watts Robinson, CEO, Miami Valley Housing Opportunities, and Co-Chair Belinda Matthews Stenson, director, Minority Business Partnership of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce.

Says Shannon Isom, president and CEO of YWCA Dayton, “Occasionally, someone will ask me if we’ll ‘run out’ of influential women in the Dayton area to recognize. Clearly, we will not. We stand in awe of these women. They are thought leaders, innovators, literal care givers. They make our community stronger by sharing those gifts to break down barriers and help the most vulnerable among us thrive. That is the mission work YWCA Dayton has done for 148 years, and we are honored to lift up these women in pursuit of that vision.”

The Women of Influence luncheon serves as YWCA Dayton’s largest fundraiser. Sponsorship opportunities, program advertising, and table and ticket purchase information are available at www.ywcadayton.org/woi19.

For more than 150 years, YWCA has been at the forefront of the most critical social movements — from voting rights and civil rights, to affordable housing and pay equity, to violence prevention and health care reform.

Today, YWCA is one of the top 25 largest charities in the U.S., according to NonProfit Times, with total revenues of more than $775 million. YWCA helps more than 2 million women and children each year in the U.S.; worldwide, YWCA serves 25 million women and girls in 120 countries.

At YWCA Dayton, we:

  • Operate the only domestic violence shelters in Montgomery and Preble Counties. In 2017,more than 2,880 calls were fielded through our 24/7 crisis and domestic violence hotline, and 19,156 bed nights of emergency protective shelter were provided to 364 women and children in both these counties. Crisis services are also available to victims of sexual assault, human trafficking, and stalking.
  • Provide affordable housing and housing-related services for women and families who are victims of domestic violence or at risk of homelessness. In 2017, 86 women called our Single- Room Occupancy (SRO) housing units home.
  • Empower teens to explore and achieve their highest potential through Girls LEAD! (Leadership Education Activism Development), a signature curriculum of educational and prevention outreach programming. Nearly 1,000 teens received services last year, and 20 girls received scholarships to attend summer camps in Montgomery and Preble counties.
  • Advocate for legislative priorities that address racial justice and civil rights, women’s economic empowerment, and women’s health and safety. In 2017, YWCA Dayton endorsed 10 pieces of legislation and three of our supported bills were signed into law.YWCA Dayton is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, stand up for social justice, help families and strengthen our community. New Chef For The New Year at Coco’s Bistro

November 21, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

The new year will bring an exciting new change for Dayton’s own Coco’s Bistro.

The restaurant has hired Chef Bryan Ondre to take the helm of its kitchen team and infuse his unique outlook into the restaurants menu beginning January 2.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to prepare the food I like to cook and to be downtown at Coco’s,” he said. “Coco’s has such a great and supportive environment, and I am excited to bring my own take on food to the community through this opportunity.”

Ondre has an extensive career in the Dayton community, having worked in the kitchens of Pacchia, Salar and most recently Coldwater Cafe. He also spent five years at Serato in Portland, Oregon.

“I feel like I learned something from every chef I worked under,” Ondre said. “But then I took it and made it my own style, and I can’t wait to bring that to Coco’s.

Coco’s has built a strong reputation in the community for being a classy and approachable community destination, and have a longstanding reputation in the region. The Executive Chef is a meaningful piece in making it all come together. This team needs a leader in the kitchen that is creative, driven and enjoys developing skills among a passionate team and Ondre is eager to take on that role for Coco’s.

“The people who dine here are our friends and neighbors,” said Proprietress Karen Wick-Gagnet. “People come to Coco’s to create memories and have meaningful, authentic experiences, and we are looking forward to sharing new experience with them in 2019 when Bryan comes on board.”

22 Years Ago…The RUBIGIRLS became a Holiday Tradition!

November 21, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

RubiGirls star in The Show Must Go On!

‘The Birdcage’ was the movie everyone rushed to; ‘Baby Alive’ was the toy for all kids; DVD’s were launched; Gas was $1.09; and Lenny Kravitz and the Spice Girls topped the charts. It was 1996. For Fonda Peters and Dana Sintell, of the World Famous ‘RubiGirls’, an idea was growing. ‘We need a fundraiser that brings people from all walks of life to a drag show, with a goal of raising $1000 for HIV/AIDS research.’ says Fonda Peters.

The show idea was an actual extension of ‘To Care is to Cure,’ a Dayton Drag Show that took the best of Dayton’s Queens, and did shows at all the bars in the area. ‘Those were remarkable shows. Drag Queens literally rode on buses from bar to bar and did these super fun shows! They were all serious about changing the HIV trajectory…enough people had died.’ says Peters (AKA Tim Farquhar).

Fonda Peters has been doing shows for 34 Years.

For his cohort, Dana, the bus rides won’t ever be forgotten. “Honestly, I’m not sure how many of us are still alive from those days…Lord it was a long while ago! I remember one year, early on in 90’s, I was doing a number at 1470 West, and a very beautiful, young man brought a dollar and said, ‘I have AIDS. I’ve been so sad, feel like giving up. I needed this laugh more than you know.’ ‘I hugged him…held him…and there were tears…It changed me….forever! People needed a reason to celebrate the Gay Life….there was too much negativity surrounding our community’ says Dana Sintell (AKA Joshua Stucky).”

The Legendary Dana Sintell, RubiGirls emcee.

From those early days, the RubiGirls knew there was an opportunity to help…change the conversation. After lengthy talks and a few catfights, the Girls settled on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. ‘It felt right. Everyone’s home, people that have nowhere to go would have an outlet, and families could come and celebrate with us! I will be honest, the first year shocked us….we sold out and made well over our goal. It was that night we knew…THE SHOW MUST GO ON!’ says Peters.

For Peters and Sintell, the 22nd Anniversary is amazing, but they’ve been in dresses for 34 years. ‘No doubt, one of our favorite parts of any year is the BIG SHOW in November. Tim and I get to be on that stage one more year. One more standing ovation. Although we’ve talked about leaving, talked about passing the torch, I think we both feel we meant what we said when we committed to seeing an end to HIV. Can’t quit….especially when things have gotten so much better.’ says Stucky.

Magestik always brings the beat to the shows.

Today’s RubiGirls are definitely well-versed in ‘The Show Must Go On.’ Magestick (AKA Matthew Swisher) says,’This is THE show of the year. We rehearse a ton, drink afterward, and new ideas fly. I am beyond proud to be part of the RubiGirls and this special night. Every dollar is going to help someone, educate someone and make a better day for people with HIV. Truth is, crazy as they are, Tim and Josh, actually all of the more seasoned Girls, are iconic in this town. Not because they are beautiful, or dress to the 9’s or whatever….it’s because they stuck to their vision. They really want to do good things for people.’

The RubiGirls appear all over the Dayton area!

The RubiGirls are on the verge of helping raise $2,000,000 for charities. ‘Um, we had no idea this would ever happen.’ Sintell adds. ‘The support of the Dayton community surpasses every city, even bigger ones, around the country. When I tell people we do banquets, parties, grand openings, bingo, church performances, nursing homes, trivia, kids’ birthdays….etc, etc, they are stunned! RubiGirls are something special. And we take that very seriously. We always want to be cutting edge, but remain respectful. It’ s a fine line…but people are more apt to donate when they laugh and feel good.’

Peters concludes, ‘There have been over 50 or so RubiPerformers over the years. It’s a legacy. We’ve been performing longer then some of these new girls have been alive. That says a lot. We just hope that this continues, as long as possible, with great laughs, bigger crowds and MORE DONATIONS! Long live the RubiGirls!’

THE SHOW MUST GO ON

is set for Saturday, 11/24, with doors opening at 7pm.

It is in a brand new downtown venue, The Brightside,
located at 905 East Third Street Suite B, Dayton, Ohio 45402.

Tickets are on sale by clicking on link, or at the door for $40, if still available!
And don’t forget to bring a few bucks for tipping!

Be sure and follow The RubiGirls  on Facebook!

Weird Al & White Snake Concerts Announced!

November 13, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

“Weird Al” Yankovic has just announced the dates for his 2019 Strings Attached tour – a high-energy, rock and comedy show featuring costumes, props, a video wall, and – for the first time – a full orchestra.

For his 2018 Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour, Weird Al wanted to reward his hardcore fans with an intimate, scaled-down show that showcased a rotating setlist of semi-obscure deep-cut non-parody album tracks, many of which he and his band had never performed live before.  For his 2019 Strings Attached tour, he’s back to playing the hits and classics – but this time his band will be supported every night by background singers and an entire symphony orchestra.

According to Al: “I wanted to follow up my most bare-bones tour ever with my most elaborate and extravagant tour ever. We’re pulling out all the stops for this one.”

“Weird Al” Yankovic is the biggest-selling comedy recording artist in history, earning four Grammys and fifteen career nominations. He is best known for his hilariously irreverent parodies of hit songs, including “Eat It,” “Like A Surgeon,” “Smells Like Nirvana,” “Amish Paradise,” “White & Nerdy,” and “Tacky.”

Yankovic’s 14th studio album Mandatory Fun (2014) made headlines when it became the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart, and the first comedy album to even reach the top of that chart in over 50 years. The single “Word Crimes” debuted in the Billboard Top 40, making Al one of only four artists to have had Top 40 singles in each of the last four decades (the other three being Michael Jackson, Madonna and U2).  He recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Rapid Fired Pizza offers thirteen craft pizzas or an infinite number of build your own pizza options also cooked in 180 seconds.  RFP features eight sauces, eight cheeses, over thirty toppings, and fourteen dipping sauces for patrons to build their perfect pizza.  Salads, calzones, breadsticks, and desserts are also available.  14” pizzas are available at select locations.  All items on the Rapid Fired menu are available for delivery at most locations.

The concept was founded in Kettering, Ohio and has grown as fast as their pizzas cook!  RFP has 26 stores open in 5 states and stores under construction in 3 additional states. Every Rapid Fired Pizza location has flat screen TVs,  LED lighting and uses recyclable materials. Rapid Fired Pizza opened their first store in September of 2015.
