Shon Walters – “reduced to nothing”

November 8, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Stivers School for the Arts along with the Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District
proudly presents, “reduced to nothing,” a Solo Exhibition and Book Release by Shon
Walters.

Shon Walters is a local Dayton, Ohio artist that has been working with various mediums
with a concentration in wood for almost thirty years. Exhibiting and selling his work
nationwide for many years, Walters is a celebrated and awarded sculptor. His latest
local commissions can be viewed at Toxic Brew Company in Dayton, Ohio’s Oregon
District as well as a largest-scaled commission at the New Lebanon Library also in
Ohio.

Focused primarily on his national clientele and private commissions, Shon’s work has
been but somewhat unseen locally. He has not shown any work publicly in Dayton for
over five years and not had a solo show for fifteen.  With an inherent feeling of the
missing connection with his local community, he was awarded with an individual grant
given by Culture Works via Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District.

Placing a year of commissions on hold to focus, the solo exhibition will be showcasing
his newest body of personal work including some pieces from a series in progress for 7
years. The artist has conceptualized an immersive reality for guests to truly be a part of
his larger-than-life works and series works along with video and sound installations
aiming to deliver a sensory experience.

Between the 2003 and 2015 Shon created 9 different drawer-box series. He has
compiled a book of images with a story and philosophy behind the work. The book,
“The birth, evolution and extinction of the drawer box,” will be released and copies will
be for sale.

Please join us for the opening reception on November 9 th  from 6-9pm.

Culture Works Unveils a New Look

November 1, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Culture Works has announced a new logo and brand as the organization prepares to enter its 45th year serving the Dayton Region.

“We’re looking to the future—not only of our organization, but of the community as a whole,” said Culture Works Executive Director Lisa Hanson. “Our vision for the arts in the Dayton Region is one of collaboration, dynamism, and expansion. It’s time for our brand to reflect that vision.”

The organization revealed the new logo at its annual meeting on November 1st to a crowd of longtime supporters, community leaders, and arts partners.

Over the course of its history, Culture Works has undergone many significant changes, starting out as the Dayton Performing Arts Fund and later merging with the Miami Valley Arts Council to expand into a regional body which advocates for cultural organizations in a broader geographical area. Throughout this evolution, however, Culture Works’ core mission has remained the same: Strengthening the Dayton Region through the power of the arts.

Rather than an organizational change of course, the new logo represents an enhancement and expansion of Culture Works’ existing roles in the community. In designing the new logo, Culture Works staff and board members sought inspiration from the organization’s rich history and vision for the future. The intersecting lines represent community collaboration, the myriad ways the arts touch our lives every day, and Culture Works’ role as a connector between arts, education, business, government, and individuals. The new color palette represents the vibrancy of our cultural community and the ways in which artists and artistic disciplines feed into and complement one another. Finally, the logo’s circular shape represents unity—a unified voice for the arts, a unified Dayton Region.

The new logo is only the beginning. In the coming months, Culture Works will launch a new website, a new video celebrating individual artists in the Dayton community, and a new arts education portal designed to connect the region’s educators with transformative arts experiences from local organizations.

Sat, Nov 3rd is National Sandwich Day – Check out the Deals!

October 31, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Saturday, November 3,  National Sandwich Day

Never underestimate the power of a good sandwich, there’s something special about the best of the worlds toppings slipped between two slices of bread. Mayonnaise as a sandwich dressing? You betcha, slices of pickle? Of course! French fries? Don’t look at us like that, French fry sandwiches are delicious! The fact of the matter is that if you like something on its own, you’ll almost certainly like it dressed up for the ball in bread and toppings. Sandwich Day celebrates them all.

History of Sandwich Day

There is a commonly known story about the history of the word sandwich, and it’s attributed to John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. One piece of that history that’s rarely discussed is the meaning of the word Sandwich and the town it comes from. Sandwich is a city in the shire of Kent in England, originally the word was spelled Sondwic, and then Sandwic, and ultimately in 1086 as Sandwice. The name of the town came from its purpose and its claim to fame, it was a market town. So what does Sandwich actually mean? “Market Town on Sandy Soil”.

John Montagu was the 4th Earl of this town, a royal title that essentially means ‘chieftain’ and placed them in charge of a territory in the King’s stead. John was a well a known lover of card games, and it’s said he originally ordered his meat to be delivered to him between two slices of bread so that he would not get his grease laden fingers on the card, nor require a fork to eat.As people heard of this, they started ordering their food “The Same as Sandwich”, and eventually just “a sandwich”. From such things are legendary culinary delights born. Sandwich Day celebrates both the Earl himself, and the wonder he brought to us in the form of the sandwich.

The Deals:

It only took one inning in Game 1 of the World Series for Taco Bell’s annual promotion to come into fruition. For the fourth year in a row Taco Bell has offered the “Steal a Base, Steal a Taco” promotion when a player steals a base in the championship series.
