Lewis Black Joke’s On Us Tour

October 22, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Following the highly successful 2018 “The Joke’s On Us Tour,” Lewis Black has added Spring 2019 dates to the tour.  He’ll be in Cincinnati on Saturday, March 23 at 8pm
Taft Theatre.  His live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. He is a passionate performer who is a more pissed-off optimist than a mean-spirited curmudgeon. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world.

The GRAMMY Award-winning, stand-up comedian, is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. He executes a brilliant trifecta as a stand-up comedian, actor and author. Receiving critical acclaim, he performs more than 200 nights annually, to sold-out audiences throughout Europe, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. He is one of a few performers to sell out multiple renowned theaters, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooks Atkinson Theatre, New York City Center, the Main Stage at the Mirage in Las Vegas and most recently, a sold-out Broadway run at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City.

Reserved tickets: $65.00, $49.50 & $39.50 (plus applicable fees), go on sale Friday, October 26 at 11AM at www.tafttheatre.org, the Taft Theatre Box Office, and www.ticketmaster.com.  Charge by phone at 1.800.745.3000.

Black’s live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. He is a passionate performer who is a more pissed-off optimist than a mean-spirited curmudgeon. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world.

LEWIS BLACK came into national prominence with his appearances on THE DAILY SHOW in 1996. Those appearances on THE DAILY SHOW led to comedy specials on HBO, Comedy Central, Showtime and Epix. In 2001, he won Best Male Stand-Up at the American Comedy Awards. He has released eight comedy albums, including the 2007 GRAMMY Award-winning The Carnegie Hall Performance. He won his second GRAMMY Award for his album Stark Raving Black and has published three bestselling books: Nothing’s Sacred (Simon & Schuster, 2005), Me of Little Faith (Riverhead Books, 2008) and I’m Dreaming of a Black Christmas (Riverhead Books, 2010). In 2012, he performed eight sell-out shows at Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway as well as did one of his two HBO Specials BLACK ON BROADWAY. In 2015, Black notably voiced the character “Anger” in the Academy Award winning film from Pixar, “Inside Out.”

Additionally, Lewis Black does a live streaming show on Audible called THE RANT IS DUE. There is behind-the-scenes moments from the Lewis Black tour bus, as well as occasional phone calls to the people behind the rants. From hate for pickles to disdain for online dating, this show channels the rage of 300 million neighbors and truly has something for everybody. More show info can be found here.

OVI Checkpoint Tonight in Dayton

October 19, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

The Dayton Police Department, along with members of the Combined Agency OVI Task Force of Montgomery County, will operate a sobriety checkpoint tonight from 8 pm to 1 am, first in the area of East Third and Terry Streets and then at South Keowee and East Fifth Streets.
The goal of the OVI Task Force is to reduce the number of alcohol/drug related traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities in Dayton and Montgomery County. Sobriety checkpoints help deter impaired driving and aid in the apprehension of those impaired drivers who make the choice to get behind the wheel and drive. The majority of the deadliest crashes occur on weekends.

RTA Launches The FLYER- A FREE Shuttle Bus Service Downtown

October 18, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

It’s been talked about for years and now the RTA is making it happen!

The FLYER will be a shuttle-style service that will begin  servicing the downtown and UD area in early November.  There will be a launch event with local media and public officials on Courthouse Square on Friday, Nov. 9th.

The circulator will operate six days a week and is FREE for anyone to use. There will be signs posted at the designated stops. People can get on or off simply by waiting at the stop, and a Flyer should arrive in 10 minutes or less.

The Flyer provides easy access to offices, local dining, nightlife, entertainment, parks, hotels, parking, and all that downtown Dayton has to offer in 10 minutes or less. Three “green fleet” hybrid buses run on a continuous loop to provide quick service, and each vehicle is trackable through RTA’s real time products, including the free Transit app available for download in the App Store or Google Play. By offering this service for free to all customers, The Flyer opens up transportation access to downtown employees and residents, students at the University of Dayton and visitors to Dayton to all the city has to offer.

The Flyer will head north on Brown and Warren streets up to Jefferson Street and Patterson Boulevard.

The buses will drive west on Fifth Street, then head north up Main Street and then take a right on East First Street, before looping back around using Monument Avenue. Shuttle stops will be on both sides of the street.

This joint venture is being sponsored by CareSource and Premier Health, which will help their  employee shuttles to parking lots near their offices.  The bulk of the expense will be absorbed by Greater Dayton RTA .

“This is a great opportunity for University of Dayton students, faculty and staff to explore the wonderful arts, culture and entertainment in downtown Dayton and do it in a sustainable way,” said University of Dayton President Eric F. Spina.

Storybook Foundry Helps Nonprofits Put “Their Best Words Forward”

October 15, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

A new service based in Yellow Springs, Ohio offers an online workshop program called Storybook Foundry designed to help nonprofit professionals develop their organizational narrative in a way that increases awareness and financial contributions.

Drawing on her background in theater production, nonprofit management, and education, founder and CEO, Ara Beal, has developed a collection of 10 concise documents that answer the question “How do we talk about our organization?”  Intended for use within a nonprofit, the program focuses on words, pictures and numbers, but also includes some go-to paragraphs and style guides.

“As I’ve moved in nonprofit circles, I’ve met so many people who are passionate about their work but can’t speak concisely about the identity of the organization,” Beal explained. “I’ve also consistently heard from contracted help, like grant writers and web designers, that they can’t get clearly-organized information from nonprofits. We help fix that.”

Working with dozens of small nonprofits over the past decade, Beal has a sense of their capacity in terms of funds and time. She has designed a product that is affordable, has high returns in efficiency, and takes a reasonable amount of time.

“I’m also excited about the opportunity to connect nonprofit leaders from around the country in small groups for six weeks,” Beal said. “I know the valuable nature of such communities and connections.”

Storybook Foundry just started its first online workshop earlier this month and plans a full launch of the product in January of 2019.  To learn more visit www.storybookfoundry.com or email [email protected] to add your organization to the already growing list of interested participants.
