Golden Lamb Hosts “Dinner with History”

The Golden Lamb Inn is the oldest hotel in Ohio. It owes its early success due to location – halfway between Cincinnati and the National Road (now U.S. Route 40). The Golden Lamb has hosted a number of historical figures, including 12 United States Presidents (from as far back as John Quincy Adams to as recent as George W. Bush), and today is still serving excellent cuisine to guests from all over the country.
This month, the historical dinner series continues with a night dedicated to Clement Vallandigham, a rabble-rousing, controversial Copperhead politician from Ohio who served during the American civil war.
Dinner with History: Clement Vallandigham will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 28. The evening includes a three-course menu from the Golden Lamb culinary team, as well as a talk from Golden Lamb Historian John Zimkus, who will tell the tale of Vallandigham’s colorful life, and the Golden Lamb’s connection to his bizarre and untimely death. The menu for the evening includes:
- Starter: Burrata and local tomato salad with cucumber, white balsamic vinaigrette, grilled extra-virgin olive oil scented baguette
- Entrée course: Certified Angus Beef New York strip steak and seared scallop with goat cheese pesto mashed potatoes, local summer succotash, cabernet reduction
- Decadence: Strawberry shortcake with pickled strawberries, vanilla whipped cream
Reservations are required and can be made by calling Golden Lamb at (513) 932-5065. Reservations are $45 per person all inclusive.

VTA Names New President & CEO: Ty Sutton
Martha Shaker, Chair of Victoria Theatre Association’s Board of Trustees, announces the selection of VTA’s new President & CEO, TY SUTTON, who replaces retiring President & CEO Ken Neufeld. Sutton joins VTA after three years as the Inaugural Executive Director of the Butler Arts Center at Butler University. He brings more than 20 years of arts venue management experience, as well as extensive fundraising, marketing and programming knowledge to VTA. Sutton starts his new position Aug. 13.
“My philosophy has always been that the arts bring people together,” said Sutton. “I am very impressed with the level of commitment and financial support the Dayton community has given the Dayton arts scene, especially in embracing Victoria Theatre Association’s world-class facilities and arts programming. With the addition of the new Arts Annex, I believe our venues can accommodate any type of performance and allow us to grow the diversity of our shows while broadening our audiences. I am eager to lead an organization with such an outstanding record of success. Continuing to grow our offerings and making a positive impact in people’s lives will be at the top of my priority list. Dayton will be a great place for my family to call home.”
Sutton was chosen after a six-month international search, conducted by leading arts executive recruiting firm Management Consultants for the Arts. VTA Board of Trustees Vice-Chair Chris Wyse served as the Chair of the six-member Search Committee.
“I am thrilled to welcome Ty as the new VTA President & CEO,” said Wyse. “His ideas around the new Arts Annex are very progressive as are his thoughts on programming and diversity. These characteristics, combined with extensive experience and proven track record of growing performing arts centers, will ensure everyone in Dayton is able to experience the numerous offerings from VTA.”
VTA Board of Trustees Chair, Martha Shaker, shares Wyse’s enthusiasm.
“I am confident Ty will not only embrace VTA’s rich history and impact on our community, but also the task of moving forward with the foundation laid by Ken Neufeld,” said Shaker. “Ty is a strong fit, not only to the organization but to our community. I believe he is poised to grow VTA even more.”
Retiring VTA President & CEO, Ken Neufeld, is also pleased with the selection.
“I am delighted to welcome Ty and his family to VTA and look forward to introducing them to the Dayton community,” said Ken Neufeld, “I have greatly enjoyed my time in Dayton and, while I will miss VTA and the Miami Valley community, I firmly believe we are in good hands for the future.”

Kendell Thompson Named Superintendent of Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park
National Park Service (NPS) Midwest Regional Director Cam Sholly announced the selection of Kendell Thompson as superintendent of Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park in Dayton, Ohio. A 31-year veteran of the NPS, Thompson is currently Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial superintendent. He has served as the acting superintendent at Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park since August 2017. He assumes his new role August 5, 2018.
“I have appreciated Kendell’s performance as the acting Superintendent at Dayton Aviation over the past months and what he accomplished previously as the Superintendent of Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial,” said Sholly. “He has done an excellent job of listening and fostering relationships and will be a strong Superintendent and partner to the community.”
“It is an honor to be selected as the superintendent of Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, a site that explores the limitless possibilities that can be accomplished by determined people,” Thompson said. “Dayton Aviation tells a story of innovation and resiliency. It celebrates how the Wright Brothers changed history, and also examines the amazing legacy of Paul Laurence Dunbar, one of America’s most revered poets. Like the Wrights and Dunbar, Dayton Aviation marks a truly innovative, partnership approach to a national park, and I am excited to join the efforts of our many partners, staff and the Miami Valley community to help tell these stories.”
For the past eight years, Thompson has served as superintendent of Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in Lincoln City, Indiana. Originally from Oklahoma, Thompson’s career with the National Park Service spans over 42 years when he began volunteering at age 13 at Mount Rainier National Park in Washington. He has served in 13 National Park Service areas including Mount Rainier National Park, Denali National Park, Jean Lafitte National Historical Park, The USS Arizona Memorial, Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial, and Yosemite National Park. He is a second-generation ranger, following in his father’s footsteps.
Thompson earned his Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Conservation with minor degrees in botany and sociology from Southeastern Oklahoma State University and earned a law enforcement commission from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. He has served as the editorial advisor for Ranger magazine since 2012, has authored a novel, and published multiple articles.
In his spare time, Thompson enjoys outdoor recreation, home brewing, and cooking. Along with his wife Emily and their three children, he is looking forward to exploring the Five Rivers MetroParks and hiking, biking and kayaking the many miles of Dayton’s trail system.

Frisch’s Big Boy Bringing Back Coke
Frisch’s CEO Jason Vaughn made a big announcement this morning at the Frisch’s Gilbert Avenue location.
Frisch’s CEO Jason Vaughn made the big announcement Monday morning at Frisch’s Gilbert Avenue facility. In September, Frisch’s stores will return to serving Coca- Cola products at all their locations! “It’s one of the most requested asks by our guests,” Vaughn said of Coke.
In December 2013 the chain announced a switched from Coke to Pepsi, saying goodbye to vanilla Cokes much to the chagrin of thirsty customers. Since then, their biggest customer request has been to bring back Coke products. The return of Coke follows the triumphant return of crinkle cut fries back in January, a move Vaughn said was a way to blend Frisch’s heritage with plans for the future.
