December 14, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

About the event

Experience a chilling Victorian tradition at the historic Seth Silver Haines Mansion (McKee Manor) in Waynesville, Ohio. Did you know that ghost stories became a cherished part of Christmas during the Victorian era? Families would gather around the hearth on Christmas Eve, sharing tales of the supernatural, believing the long, dark nights were the perfect backdrop for such stories. Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol revived this tradition, intertwining the festive spirit with eerie encounters. Now, you can experience this tradition firsthand at the Seth Silver Haines Mansion, a Gothic home built in 1854, believed to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad. The original brick was covered with stucco in 1909, and parts of the tunnel used to bring runaway slaves up from the river are still in evidence.

May 8, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

Village Family Restaurant, a beloved cornerstone of downtown Waynesville, is proud to celebrate its 45th anniversary this month — marking over four decades of hearty meals, warm coffee, and cherished community connection.

Founded in 1980, the restaurant has served generations of families, travelers, and locals with its signature comfort food, friendly service, and classic small-town atmosphere. From early morning breakfasts to bustling Sunday lunches, the Village Family Restaurant has remained a reliable, welcoming spot where “everyone knows your name — and your order.”

“This anniversary is incredibly meaningful to us,” said Lacie Sims, current owner of the restaurant. “For 45 years, this place has been more than just a business — it’s been a gathering place, a family, and a part of the fabric of Waynesville. We’ve seen kids grow up, couples get engaged in our booths, and locals who’ve come in every day for decades.”

As the restaurant celebrates this major milestone, the ownership is also announcing plans to pass the torch to a new generation. The business is officially for sale, opening the door for someone with a passion for community, tradition, and food service to step in and carry on the legacy.

“This isn’t a goodbye — it’s the beginning of a new chapter,” said Lacie Sims. “We’re looking for the right buyer who values what this place means to Waynesville and sees the potential for even more great years ahead.” sees the potential for even more great years ahead.”

Yuletide Village – Season of Lights Adds Charitable Components

November 24, 2022 By Dayton937

You are invited into a world filled with lights, music, cheer, and memories to cherish. Santa has set up a workshop in the village and is ready to hear your holiday wishes!

This year, Yuletide Village – Season of Lights becomes Yuletide Village – Season of Giving. Organizers of the holiday event decided to support two local charities after seeing the need in the community. There are a handful of ways that you can help Yuletide Village support these local charities while enjoying the magic of the village all aglow.

The first charity is the Found by Faith Food Pantry. This organization has been serving the Harveysburg community for over a year, helping provide food to those in need. They delivered over 5,500 pounds of food to the elderly and low-income families in the area during an October pantry day.

The second charity is the Massie Township Fire Department. The department consists of an all volunteer staff of around 24 people, two-thirds of which commute from other counties. The department covers 22 1/3 square miles including Caesar’s Creek State Park, I-71, and State Route 73. All donations will go towards the department’s operating budget so they can continue to keep the township safe.

Photos with Krampus. If you’re on the naughty list, you probably already know who this is. Krampus is a mythical fixture in several European countries this time of year. As part of the myth, Krampus has one night that he will take the children who are on the naughty list – Krampus Nacht – typically a few weeks before traditional Christmas Eve when the big man in a red suit comes. This year, Krampus will be seated on this throne in the Aleing Knight Pub in two shifts, 5:30 – 6:30pm and 7pm – 8pm. You can purchase a photo with Krampus and proceeds go towards the Found by Faith Food Pantry in Harveysburg. Remember, Krampus doesn’t speak – just one of his tall, dark, and mysterious qualities.

Gift Wrapping Station. From bespoke jewelry to classic wooden toys, you’ll find something for everyone on your list at our Yuletide Market’s unique booths and shops. You can then head on over to the Yule Market tent for the Massie Township Fire Department gift wrapping station. A small donation is all it takes to keep those presents a secret. Boxes, bags, wrapping paper selections, ribbons and bows done up with festive cheer.

Donations. Both organizations accept cash donations to the following addresses.

Massie Township Fire Department Found by Faith Food Pantry

PO Box 91 73 South Street

Harveysburg, OH 45032 Harveysburg, OH 45032

You can also choose to add a few dollars onto your Yuletide Village ticket purchase (online only) to go to the Massie Township Fire Department. Tickets can be purchased at www.yuletidevillage.com.

Ugly Christmas Sweater. Who doesn’t already have a handful of ugly, gawdy Christmas sweaters in their closet and couldn’t use at least one more because ‘this one’ is the ugliest? We’ve got you covered! The Yuletide Village design might not be the ugliest you’ve seen, but we guarantee you it’s going to be the talk of the holiday gathering. Start your collection this year and get a new one each Yuletide Village! Proceeds from sales of the ugly Christmas sweaters at the souvenir booth will be donated to the Found by Faith Food Pantry.

Explore the outdoor marketplace, listen to live music, get your picture taken with Woodland Santa, and enjoy the Winter Magic light display. Located at Renaissance Park in Warren County, home of the Ohio Renaissance Festival. For tickets and more information visit www.yuletidevillage.com.

Local Arby’s Icon Retires After 44 Years

April 2, 2019 By Dayton937 Leave a Comment

The manager at the Arby’s in Moraine is retiring after 44 years

For years we have heard him say things like “Two Arby’s beef and cheddars please..”  The lovable manager of the Arby’s in Moraine, Richard Parriman, retired this week after 44 years of serving customers.  This friendly face is unforgettable and his soft, kind personality is a part of his great work ethic and longevity.  Congratulations Richard, on a job well done!

Food Adventures is proud to bring you this “feel good” article and share the story of the incredible career of Richard.

HERE’S THE SKINNY on RICHARD PARRIMAN:

— Richard grew up in Springboro with an interest in History and Antiques.

— He went to the University of Kentucky and graduated in secondary education specializing in history and government.  As fate would have it, he took a job after school at Arby’s.  It gave him the freedom to work at an antique store too, and he never looked back.

— Richard’s first day of work was March 4, 1975 at an Arby’s that is no longer there.  He started at an Arby’s on 48 in Centerville near Whipp Rd., in what was then, Cassano’s Plaza (now Swiss Village).  That building was a Sandy’s Hamburgers, and after Arby’s it became a Trophy Nut store.

Richard served approx 1.7 million customers in 44 years

— Richard then went to work at the Arby’s that was inside the Elder Beerman near the Dayton Mall on 725 where Target is today.  He worked there from 1978 until 1998.  He remembers an Arby’s beef and cheddar sandwich was 89 cents.  Today they are $3.79.

— It was during this time in 1987 that Richard and his wife started an antique store in Waynesville called Village Antiques.  Today it is located at 185 High St. Box 204 in Waynesville.  Open noon-5pm, Tuesday through Sunday, they are closed on Monday. Please call them at 513-897-2421.  They have general antiques and specialize in Cherry and Walnut furniture and country accessory antiques.

— During his time at Arby’s, Richard averaged 50 hours, 5 days a week and about 150 customers a day.  That means over 44 years he served approximately 1, 716,000 people.  Yes that’s right, over 1.7 million people !!!

— Looking back he has seen Arby’s evolve and loved his time working for GZK franchise.  He had 5 employees that worked with him for over 25 years.  That is a testament to his leadership and unheard of in the industry.  He will miss his co-workers tremendously.  He also has a lot of regular customers he will miss that have become friends over the years.  He says the one thing people should know about Arby’s is they really do what it takes to serve high quality meats.

— During retirement he plans to relax a little, but will be busy with the antique store and spending time with his wife, his daughter and his two grandchildren.  You can see by the sparkle in his eye that he really enjoys his family time.

Thank you Richard for making every Arby’s customer feel like family too.

Two Arby’s Beef n Cheddars please

RICHARD’s MUST EATS at ARBYS:

— HAM & CHEESE SLIDER SANDWICH
Having eaten everything on the menu for so long, he has been on a Ham kick for a while.  He preferred a small ham sandwich when he would get breaks during the workday.

What other local restaurants are Richard’s favorites?

Being in the restaurant industry, Richard doesn’t eat out all that often.  But when he does, he likes 3 places in Waynesville.

RICHARDS FAVORITE LOCAL RESTAURANTS:

— THE VILLAGE RESTAURANT:
Located at 144 S Main St. in Waynesville, they serve breakfast, lunch and  dinner.  Offerings include family style from salads to comfort Southern food.

— THE COBBLESTONE CAFE:
A quaint little place, part restaurant, part country store.  A great brunch menu, and the staff is friendly.

— STONE HOUSE TAVERN:

Arbys has 2 fish sandwiches for $5 during Lent.

Fun atmosphere, and good pub food at 258 S Main St, Waynesville.  We have had many Food Adventures there!

Well folks, that does it, the end of an era for a local Arby’s manager as he shifts focus to family and his antique store.  What an incredible accomplishment to put in 44 years in such a fast paced environment.  It is great to hear about unsung “local heroes” like this that lead by example.  Richard is a humble person and we thank him for letting us share his incredible story of longevity on our Food Adventures blog.

Richard will be missed by Arby’s regulars and customers in Moraine and throughout Dayton.  All good things must come to an end.  Thank you Richard for 44 years of great service !

Please check out Richard’s store,  Village Antiques on High Street in Waynesville if you get a chance and visit the Parriman family.  Unfortunately, you’re gonna have to bring your own Arby’s sandwiches …

Bellwether Music Festival busts out the best alternative rock!

August 6, 2018 By LIbby Ballengee

There is certainly no shortage of summer music festivals in the greater Miami Valley region, however many of them lean towards jam, folk, bluegrass, and country fans. For the many alternative and indie rock fans, there are far fewer festival options, especially ones with camping.

That’s the gap that Bellwether Music Festival is hoping to fill. Referred to as a “mini-Bonnaroo”- this two-day, two-stage alternative music festival features an impressive lineup of both national and local acts, along with one of the most unique festival grounds anywhere: The Renaissance Park in Waynesville! Last year, my friend mentioned how great it would be to have a music festival there, and low and behold, someone did it!

Not only did organizers nab a prime location, they are pulling in some major acts, including: MGMT, The Flaming Lips, Local Natives, Echo & The Bunnymen, Dr. Dog, The Psychedelic Furs, Whitney, AJ & The Woods, Allah-Las, Japanese Breakfast, Bob Schneider, Erika Wennerstrom (of Heartless Bastards), This Pine Box, Alex Lahey, Dawg Yawp, Speaking Suns, The Cordial Sins, Cherry Lee & The Hot Rod Hounds and Carriers. Full schedule is posted here. Plus there are After Parties in the campground, as well as morning yoga. For the best experience, download the Bellwether app on the App Store or Google Play for map, schedule and info.

These festival organizers are tuned into what festival audiences want, so they put the stages are across from one another and set times don’t overlap. YES! Nothing more frustrating than going to music festival, and you can’t see everyone on the lineup because they are playing at the same time. Organizers say you’ll have time to grab a beer or run to the restroom and catch every band. Plus they have people and performers coming from 45 states and 8 countries. What a great event to meet all kinds of people! Plus, this festival is already committed to year two and will offer special early-bird ticket prices to those who attend this year. They thought of everything!

New Camping Music Festival Coming to Waynesville

April 7, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

There’s a brand new new camping music festival set to take place on August 10th and 11th at the Ohio Renaissance Festival Grounds.   Topping the bill for the inaugural Bellwether Music Festival will be MGMT and The Flaming Lips.

Bellwether — a new camping music festival dreamed up in part by Bill Donabedian, whose resume includes co-founding Cincinnati’s MidPoint, Bunbury and BuckleUp music festivals.  As the festival’s description on their site notes, “Bellwether Music Festival is a two-day, two-stage alternative music festival with camping. Get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy some peace and quiet… Until the music starts. Join us August 10-11 for music by day and stars by night.”

Organizers are aiming for 10,000 to 15,000 people to kick off this first festival, drawing from  Cincinnati, Dayton and Columbus. “The response has been just fantastic right out of the gate. Other than just great activity on social media, the tickets are selling,” Donabedian said. The two-day festival boasts two stages and will have facilities for basic tent camping, glamping (40-by-40 space with tent and cots provided and one parking space) and traditional RV camping.

Attendees can purchase tickets for one or both days, a “freshen up” pass with access to shower facilities, as well as VIP tickets that include private viewing of both stages, private restroom facilities, air-conditioned hospitality tents with free snacks and access to private cash bars with drink specials. The 2-Day General Admission Pass is $95, while the VIP Pass is $245.  Camping and RV Camping passes are also available.

Visit Bellwether Music Festival’s website here for ticket information, musician info and more.
