‘Friend Art’ strikes many a NERVE!

May 10, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

The Nerve has a hit on their hands…not simply because the play is so-well written (by Sofia Alvarez SIRENS, MAN SEEKIN WOMAN); not just because the actors deliver punch after punch; not just because the direction is engaging and not just because it’s relatable material….but because of ALL of that! The story, at its core, really highlights the idea that somewhere along the line we have to go for our dreams, or leave them along the side of the road. It plucks at our desire to forever stay young, all the while knowing that the ‘jig’ is up. Through all of that is the age old question, can we ever really be honest with our friends…about their lives, their opinions, their art?

The play features four characters….Kevin (AJ Breslin) the one voice unafraid to face the fact that some parts of life in your 30s really just aren’t great; Nate (Christopher Hahn) the once famous, now joy-searching ‘pay me to show-up’ guy; Lil (Shalemar Davis), the performance artist unaware that she’s unaware and Molly (Lauren Everett) a do-gooder who faces the fact it’s time to dip her toes into some less calming waters. Each of the actors portrays their character with simple realness….you know them, you ARE them.

Friend Art, listed as a comedy, is much more than just laughs. It’s poignant, it’s promising and, at times, it’s peculiar! The scenes run in a sequence spaced oddly, and that, in part, is what makes it work so well. You are interested to know what combination of characters will pop up in the next vignette. And it keeps the show moving…and it moves…at times straight-forward, at others, with an awkward twist and revelation. You will see yourself in the uncomfortable, yet relatable, scene with Molly and Nate, as they imbibe and connect with their ‘inner-selves.’ You will recognize the people in your lives, who like Kevin, never meant to bend the truth in a malicious way. You will connect with Lil in her pursuit of self, of creativity, of fulfillment without fear. You ARE these people.

When the story, which is really more of an eavesdrop on friends’ conversations, gets to the gritty discussion about ‘what is love’ and ‘what is fidelity’ and ‘what difference does it ultimately make’ we see a cast so convincing that no matter your opinion of the answer, you can defend them all! That’s probably the biggest win in Friend Art, it leaves us open to the fact that we don’t have all the answers, never have, and never will. What we really have are those folk in our lives willing tom tell us how beautiful we are, even when the truth says otherwise.

There is a lot to love about Friend Art. It reminds you that friendships are vital relationships in our loves….that honesty rarely is honest, and maybe that’s ok….that our attitudes about work and life haven’t really changed that much in 40 years….and that we are all, no matter the city, the time, the space, hoping to find that simple circle that says, ‘You’re a Mess and I Love you For That!’

The play is directed by Jenna Valyn and  Kaleigh-Brooke Scheiding. Performances are at the PNC Annex May 19th – May 29th.

Festive. Lively. Grand. Wright State’s ARTSGala is BACK!

March 27, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

There is a magic in Wright State’s ARTSGala. Maybe it’s The Dance? The Theater? The Voice? The Films? The Orchestra? Maybe it’s the fact that Wright State continues to provide the area, the nation, even the world with graduates that lead the way in the creative arts. Or maybe, just maybe, the magic is the event itself!

People have been longing for ARTSGala to return to her glory following a long and arduous pandemic. The two year hiatus appears to be over. Saturday, April 9, WSU will be be chock full of student performances in all kind of art forms. The event, 7pm-12a, will be held in the Creative Arts Center. ‘We are back,’ says Joe Deer, Artistic Director of the Department of Theatre, Dance and Motion Pictures at Wright State University.  ‘You can feel the excitement. There is so much to engage with at this year’s Gala. You can see selections from Sweet Charity; see sets designed by film students; hear some Broadway, Disney and Shakespeare; and of course, opera, dance and  the orchestra!’

Deer beams. He knows the community enjoys this sort of ‘arts theme park.’ ‘Folks can rove where they please and enjoy whatever they choose. The event is truly immersive. It’s a unique approach to the Arts, and it’s popular! I have always said it feels like a cruise ship without the water!’ Deer goes on, ‘and what I mean is great entertainment, excellent food in elegant dining rooms, a piano bar, great wine, craft beer, bourbon, specialty cocktails and even cigars!’

With all of that said, the Gala is really about raising money to provide scholarships for students of the arts programs. (Of note, the Gala has raised $3 million for the scholarships since its inception.) Another unique facet of the evening is the ability to talk to the WSU students about their experience. It keeps the night intimate and personal.

One of the more popular parts of the ARTSGala is the coveted silent auction. Mobile bidding is used for more than 100 items at the event. You can bid on everything from art to luxury items.

Entertainment. A Great Cause. Dreams Realized. And A University Committed to the ARTS. It really doesn’t get much better than Wright State’s ARTSGala!

Tickets to this year’s big event are $300 each and can be purchased at www.wright.edu/artsgala. You can also go to www.wright.edu/artsgala/why-support-artsgala to hear real world experiences from some of the college’s arts students.

SUNDAY ‘TEA’ WILL BE SPILLED….so DRINK UP!

March 23, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

The Bar and Bistro at the ‘Top of the Market’ will be lit Sunday, May 1st, as Dayton takes a sip of it’s very own SUNDAY TEA DANCE!

Centered around the ancient idea of ‘having tea’ from 4p-7p, the Bistro will kick off their own version with Drinks, Drag Queens and Dancing! Gaining popularity around the country, these ‘daytime’ parties feature high energy dance music (by DJ ALVAREZ) and a chance to have a Sunday Funday throughout the summer.

The premiere show features a stellar cast….Dayton royalty JACKIE O, The smoldering hot JESSICA MARIE JONES, ever deranged DANA SINTELL and the return of a Dayton Favorite, CARRIE J SUMMERS! On deck are Chasity Marie and other locals! Show director (Sintell) was overjoyed when the girls agreed that this could be something amazing! ‘I have always thought a TEA DANCE had potential in Dayton. You see them in Saugatuck, NYC, MIAMI….why not here! Who doesn’t want to see a show, hear some great tunes, dance with friends and be in bed by 8:30pm!’ he says with a smile. ‘I know the Bistro is the place. You can sense it when you walk in. It’s setup perfectly for a show, and there will be space to just kick back and have some fun together!’

‘I’m excited to do local drag again!’ Jackie O interjects. ‘I miss it. And look at this group. I mean…it has everything!’ The Sunday kick-off show is only the beginning of summer filled with TEA DANCE parties. And the cast will change weekly. ‘You will see one of the original 4 bopping around every Sunday, but we want to make it fresh weekly! So much fun!!’

For Carrie J Summers’ fans, this is a real treat! ‘I called Carrie, told her the concept, told her to let us know what she felt would work…and she said YES! I was thrilled.’ says Sintell. ‘People miss her…and they will love seeing her back in action.’ Action will be plenty…along with great cocktails at the Bistro. John Capobianco, the manager of the space sees the potential for growth. ‘We have a warehouse we can open up when we get the crowd. This space. is perfect for TEA and I think we are all on to something!’

In recently years, the idea of dancing at local bars has dwindled with the closing of some longtime clubs. Here is a chance to get back into the groove. ‘The drag show part of this is unique. Dayton always has to do things a little differently, and adding Drag seems the perfect partner to TEA DANCE.’ says Sintell. There will likely be food trucks at the event for those needing a little fare! In sticking with Dayton Drag’s ongoing desire to ‘help others’ the Queens at Tea (the BISTRO BABES!)  will donate tips from their third (final) number of each week to a local charity! “This really worked when we did brunches in the past’ says Summers. ‘It feels good to help area charities.’

The excitement builds for the big premiere. Make sure you grab your tickets! TEA will BE SPILLED…and YOU Don’t want to MISS IT!

SUNDAYton TEA is coming to the Bar and Bistro at 32 Webster St. Dayton.

Kick-Off Show is Sunday, May 1st, 4p-7p.

Advance Seating sold by the table can be purchased online. Single tickets can be purchased at the door for just $10.

In Good ‘Company.’

March 18, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

There’s a big basketball thing happening, and there is green beer a’plenty this week/end. Mixed in all the Hoop-La is a fun, poignant, respectable version of Sondheim’s COMPANY at the PNC Arts Annex. TheaterLab Dayton‘s enchanting stroll down the ins and outs of relationships has some real ‘moments’ that only live theater can provide. Centered around the internal conflict of ‘Bobby, Bob, Robert’ (Bobby Mitchum should be beaming about his performance as the lead!) and his desire to just feel something with someone, we meet some truly endearing couples…you’ll pick your favorite of the bunch, maybe the one you relate to most!

The show, odd for a Broadway Musical, really is about everyone and everybody, and nobody and nothing. The first act sets us up for what is to be the path to self-realization that nearly all of us face at one time or another. The energy of the show truly ‘builds’ throughout. Sondheim’s purposeful meandering between ‘happiness. craziness, and longing’ in relationships is a ride…so, relax and GO! The energy ‘pops’ when the maniacal Amy (Kara Hancock) gets to ‘Not Getting Married Today…’ an anthem for the ages. Her soon-to-be? husband, Paul (Joshua Silver Hughes) desperately seeks to save the day, and through it all Bobby watches as yet another ‘version of the ideal couple’ bounces recklessly down the aisle?? Hmmmmm.

Before we get there, we get to know the floundering other couples….the competitive neurotics, Sarah and Harry (played giddily by Allie Haines and Garrett Young); the ‘perfect couple,’ Susan and Peter ( played with complete charm by Danielle Ruddy and Derick Latimer), ; the drunk and do-gooder, Joanne and Larry, (brought to life with convincing chemistry by Lindsay Sherman and David Moyer), and the staid and plain Jenny and David ( solidly played by Abby Hoggatt and Philip Drennen ***Sidenote, Hoggatt’s voice in ‘Not Getting Married…’ is not to be forgotten!)

And, there are the girlfriends (Rachel Hertenstein, Brooke Cierra & Jackie Randall)  that pop in and out and bring to life  ‘Another 100 People & You Could Drive a Person Crazy….’ as well as pepper the plot with more trouble and tribulation for Robert.

The Second Act really picks up the pace and we dive through Bob’s ‘headwinds.’ ‘Side by Side by Side/What Would I Do‘ has moments where a solid wall of beautiful voices resonate in the theater! Bravo! And through it all, we just keep rooting for LOVE…be it in ‘Barcelona‘ or at a cocktail party thrown by the ‘ladies on their own behalf.’ All roads lead to the subtle yet impactful ending….on the tail end of the quintessential  ‘Being Alive.’ (That song still grips the heart!)

Directed by Mackensie King, with a sort of relaxed, casual appeal, you can see she trusts her cast. King sets a tone, and the cast moves forward with it! King put it like this, ‘This cast is beyond talented. Each one has really taken the time to dig deeper into their scenes, and figure out how their characters relate to the others.’

And the audience will connect…as Moyer put it ‘Through the laughs and the tears, I hope the audience finds that many times there is perfection in the imperfections.  We don’t all fit the same mold, or follow the same rules.  Your happiness is what you make of it, and ultimately finding that happiness is up to you, no one else.’

‘It feels like people-watching because you are getting a glimpse into the idiosyncrasies of other people’s relationships. We can nitpick at the things we think are crazy or endearing or loving, but really we all have them, and none of us in our relationships are perfect, and there’s beauty in that.’ Latimer added.

COMPANY delivers, sometimes boldly, other times with more fragility….but I guess that’s love after all!

See COMPANY

at the PNC Arts Annex.

The ‘Human Race’ moves forward with a new ‘Kappy-Tain.’

March 12, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

35 Seasons in, the ‘The  Race Theater Company‘ is still strong, beloved and finding its future. The fingerprint, literally left on many hearts by the enduring leadership of Kevin Moore, (who has been part of the HRTC since DAY ONE!!)  now points the group in a new direction. Enter Kappy Kilburn.

‘I’ve been the executive director since 2018, but COVID kind of did its thing for the past couple years. ‘ Kilburn, who moved to Dayton from New York, has experience in Los Angeles and Pasadena…and is an alum of the Lincoln Center’s Directors Lab. ‘The Human Race has sustained and things look great for us moving forward.’ It’s a big jump from NYC to Dayton, but for Kilburn, it was kind of a homecoming. ‘ My Father worked at Armco. He was in the Air Force. As a kid, I think I  visited the Air Force Museum dozens of times!’ That would be a bridge back for Kilburn. ‘It’s honestly funny how my first interview sort of went down. My dad was in the Dayton area and knew I would be interviewing at the Human Race, So, he GPSed the theater, found the building, parked his car, went in and met Kevin and Tara and said in a Star Wars homage “You have heard of Kappy Kilburn…I Am Her Father!” He loved the people and the theater….and I knew it was meant to be from there!’

And it is. Trading the NYC craziness in for a home and spot for a 93lb. dog (Fred)  was just what Kilburn desired! ‘This is not a stepping stone. I love Dayton. This city is so loyal to its arts!  It blows my mind the variety of culture in this community. So incredibly supportive here.’ Kilburn talks about her first foray into the Dayton nightlife, spending time at Masquerage, where she encountered India Summer, one of Dayton’s  RubiGirls. ‘We were having this conversation, and here is this drag queen in full regalia, she was beautiful…and I thought to myself ‘I have found my people!’

And Dayton, thankfully, has found her. Kilburn is so approachable and at ease talking about all things theater. She gets the community vibe here. Everyone wanting success, and truly just trying to voice their opinions in hopes in helps keep the vibrancy of the arts scene alive. BUT, she is also aware that the Human Race Theater Company has something t live up to! ‘If we are going to be the Human Race Theater Company, then we have to find ways to be diverse and inclusive of all kinds of people!’ A great example of that dedication was the theater’s most recent production of ‘Everything that’s Beautiful,’ a story about a 10-year-old who was assigned male at birth but identifies as female. ‘The final performance, we invited folks from David’s Place and Dayton Children’s Hospital to come and talk with the audience about the show’s theme. It was expected to be a 15 minute discussion…it went for 45.’ A testament to the strength of diversity. ‘We have work to do to make all groups feel represented.’

Kilburn knows it’s not just diversity but balance that matters. That is not only reflected in the shows she helps to choose, along with Emily Wells, HRTC’s new Creative Director, but the audiences that come to see them.
‘We always have a pay what you can show during a play’s run. Theater must be accessible to all kinds of people. We want the stories being told to be heard by as many walks of life as possible.’  And that means younger folks as well. She is expanding the idea of job-shadowing and working with youth backstage, as well as front of house. ‘I really believe young people need to tell their stories as well. I want to find opportunity for them.’

Certainly, Dayton knows the impact we face losing Kevin Moore as the Creative Director. His dedication, his ideas and his creativity have paved the way for a strong and solid future at the Loft Theater. But, for now, the Human Race rests in the hands of a new visionary. Dayton can’t wait to see where she takes us!

“Outside, Looking In” at the tear-jerking ‘Dear Evan Hansen.’

March 9, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

Sniffles. Uproarious laughter.  Tears discretely wiped from the face. Deep sighs. And Feelings of Hopelessness. No, you’re not in high school trying to fit in….but Evan Hansen is. And my how we relate!

It’s only about 15 minutes into the Tony Award Winning Best Musical‘s Script that we see the writing on the wall. ‘Oh Sh*t…what has he done??’ We recognize it because we lived. ‘How do I fit in?’ ‘Will anyone care if I live or die?’ ‘What does it take to be seen?’ The lengths, innocently or otherwise, we will go for that sense of belonging drive Hansen’s story. The magnificent script, by Steven Levenson, is literally able to move an entire epic tale into a 2+ hour musical . It never misses a beat, loses its way or lets us rest! The show flies by!

Tackling every kind of relationship you can basically create, (mom and dad, mom and son, friend and ‘family’ friend, popular kid and nerd, daughter and mother…the list goes on) Levenson’s story weaves a strong sense of rooting for the underdog, only to realize that may not always be our best bet.  Throughout the show, Evan (played masterfully by Stephen Christopher Anthony) allows us to cheer him on, embrace his faults and ultimately forgive his errors in judgment. You cannot ‘not like’ Evan. He’s silly, sweet, sarcastic and ‘sorry’ for who and what he is. Who can’t relate to that!

The story, which lends itself to many swallowed tears, finds us wrapped in a deception that we are, as the audience, somehow part of! Connor Murphy (a big cheers to Nikhil Saboo for his portrayal…) is the hero, and the demon, and the focal point and that scapegoat! Without giving away much, you will get to it quickly when Evan belts ‘For Forever.’ And with that, fate is sealed. Lump in the throat, and a squirm in the chair.

The supporting characters are stellar! They provide the gears that keep the musical moving forward…with light (Cara Elyse Harris as Alana Beck is yummy fun)…and laughs (Matthew Edward Kemp‘s Jared is the voice we need to keep the show believable…). The moms, (Kelsey Venter as Cynthia Murphy, who gets our tears going early, and Jessica Sherman as Heidi Hansen, who brings it all home later in the show) get the ball rolling with ‘Anybody Have a Map.’ You can see moms in the audience physically nodding their heads in agreement as they listen to the lyrics.

The show has magical musical moments (Music and Lyrics by Pasek and Paul)….the beloved ‘You Will be Found’ (Buy the t-shirt at the shop.)…‘Only Us’ (which features the solid Alaina Anderson as Zoe)…and the heart-wrenching ‘So Big/So Small’ (let me know if you got through that without sobbing!). It’s packed with spectacular visual effects that drive home the culture we have become…and then again, simple sets, that drive home what’s still important.

You clutch to hope throughout the musical that everything will be just fine…and in a sense, perhaps that’s possible. But Evan Hansen is ‘real.’ Sure the sets are slick and the music is, at times, a bit melodramatic, but the story is one for this society to heed. Misinformation has consequences!!!

We know it….they know it….but as we have witnessed in our own world, just keeping ‘going’…who’s keeping score? In this case the audience. The very audience, that from the outset,  just wanted to say ‘Evan – you’re enough! You are enough!’ But, like Evan Hansen, we all had to learn that lesson on our own along the way!

‘Dear Evan Hansen’ plays at the Schuster Center March 8 – 13.

Go to daytonlive.org for tickets and information.

The Renaissance of a ‘Treasure’ Trove!

March 4, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

‘Oh My God….there are actually 4 seats at the bar!’ The voice rings out in the room filled with red leather rolling chairs, a cast of regulars, and a beloved bartender, Grace. ‘It’s really like finding a treasure!’ says the lady before plopping down with her husband and another thankful couple.
If you know Treasure Island Supper Club, tucked ever-so humbly at 4250 Chief Woods Lane in Moraine, you know seats at the bar are a premium. And be aware, there are folks who know those seats quite well, and have sat in them for decades!

The storied restaurant, known for its nautical decor, is having a moment….or perhaps it always has. Stepping into the space is the perfect blend of ‘what was’ and ‘what is’…and, oh, the sunken bar, still sought by ‘never-been-theres!’ That bar always brings a smile! ‘That’s amazing!’ Said one recent friend of mine, a virgin to TI. ‘I can’t believe I have never set foot in this place.’ he goes on…and it is hard to believe for someone who has roots in Dayton for over 40 years now. People don’t know what they are missing.

We sit, and Grace (aka Gracie), who too many is the face of Treasure Island, quickly grabs us a cocktail and sets down a menu. I have seen it 1000 times, but for some reason, I still have to remind myself, look to the right for the daily specials. As I am perusing the night’s food choices, all sounding yummy,

my Maker’s and soda comes…and it’s a right-sized cocktail! (Thank You TI!)

I have favorites at Treasure Island. I think the pickerel on Tuesday always hits the mark; Monday’s broasted chicken is some of the best and I have never had a salad there I didn’t like. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention what many hold near and dear…the CRACKER BASKET, with BUTTER! Talk about indulgence. For many of my closest friends, Treasure Island is a ‘go-to’ because you can rest assured you won’t leave hungry! To-Go boxes are plentiful at TI!

If the bar is packed, and it usually is, the dining room and it’s ornate tables, is a great place to chew and chat. The waitresses, who folks know and love, are fun-loving, know the menu and are not afraid to make suggestions (which is helpful!). They love a joke, a story or just a ‘It’s good to see you.’ Eat there twice, and believe me, you will feel that ‘belonging’ many folks speak of.
I’ve been coming to TI since I first taught school just down the street off of Dryden. After-school, we would head there for a quick cocktail and it has always been consistent….consistently satisfying!

Dayton has a love of supper clubs…think about it! Oakwood Club, Pine Club, Paragon, etc….and each of them has their own air, their own atmosphere. Treasure Island has exactly what it needs! Great food, super service, cocktails of size and LOYAL guests. That’s GOLD!

I, like many, don’t want the secret of Treasure Island getting out…it’s one of the best-kept in the area. But, truth be told, Treasure Island is one that needs to be shared. They deserve the praise they receive (see their Facebook Reviews) and the devoted fans who have shown up for decades. Go, discover the GEM that is Treasure Island!

Banquets and Parties Welcome.
They are Closed on Sundays.

THANK YOU for the HAMILTONS, ‘Hamilton!’

January 29, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

“Packed.” “Amazing.”  “So Good To See Everyone Out and About!” “Incredible!”  You’ve been hearing the accolades all week about ‘Hamilton!…but these remarks are from the business owners in the Dayton Area!

‘Hamilton’ is in town, and along with it comes a revived atmosphere in restaurants, bars and businesses in the downtown area. It has been a blessing for sure. The show, on it’s own, ground-breaking, eye-opening and pleasing to the throngs, carries with it large, sold-out crowds that rediscover out little city…lying in wait after a long 2 years!

To double-down, it was also restaurant week, which pushed some Daytonians to reach out to RESY and OPEN TABLE, something people haven’t relied on in months. And it’s a great problem to have.

Interestingly, the success of ‘Hamilton’ on Broadway lacks by comparison to the ‘Hamilton’ traveling the country! “One of the two touring productions of ‘Hamilton’ made $3,967,400 over its final eight performances in Pittsburgh. It made $4,309,027 during the previous week, which is more money than the record-breaking show has ever made during a week on Broadway.” reported M. Hershberg for Forbes magazine in ’19.
Dayton is no exception as people scramble to find a ticket or two to the show.

What’s more exciting is what it does for season ticket sales for local theaters like Dayton Live. With ‘Hamilton’ in-tow, season tickets sales can go 5% t0 30% higher….a true boon for theaters.

And, all that being said…it’ just great theater! What we can learn about Democracy, and how ‘diametric’ly opposed, foes’ can look beyond what divides us and find compromise and kindness.

Dinner, theater, life lessons and a city so excited to welcome back its life-blood….sounds like ‘Hamilton’ is just what we needed!

Hamilton is playing at the Mead Theater in the Schuster Performing Arts Center, 1 West 2nd St, Dayton.

Theater Brings Hope, Happiness and Healing to A COVID Weary World.

January 22, 2022 By Joshua Stucky

For my husband and I, it was a trip to Columbus to see CATS (not a personal favorite, but wanted to see a real show) that made me realize the need we all have for live performance. Watching the quintessential ‘MEMORY’ belted with sheer perfection by Tayler Harris (Taylerharris.com) as Grizabella, something came over me….true tears streaming down my face! I MISSED THIS! We all missed real people, doing real songs on a real stage. No streaming necessary. From that moment, I thought, ‘How Do Our Resident Dayton Artists Explain this Visceral Response People are Having to Seeing Theater Again?‘

And I gathered a stellar cast….PHILIP DRENNEN, TINA MCPHERSON,  BRIAN SHARP, JAMIE PAVLOFSKY & KEVIN MOORE.

(Note: The interview questions are answered by corresponding initials of each respondent.)

Why do you feel that people are having such an emotional response to theater’s return, not only in NYC, but around the world?

Tina McPherson

PD: The escape that we enjoy in theater was stripped from us. There is a resilience to theater and the people who participate in it.  When we were not available to perform, or to be with each other, it hurt!

KM: Theater is LIFE-SIZED! Theater is living and breathing. Being detached from that live performance is not only disappointing, it’s a punch to the GUT. To work hard and then see COVID have us postpone or close again, it created such anxiety.

JP: People react with that depth because there is nothing like a performance right before your eyes.

BS: I think for some people arts are a vital part of their lives and purpose. Seeing it open again is energizing.

Almost daily, FACEBOOK and IG feature stories of understudies and swings jumping in to save shows affected by COVID. Can you relate to the sentiment of these ‘HEROES?’

Kevin Moore (& Scott Stoney)

TM: They are extremely talented and driven, the hardest working people in show business. They might cover between 3-8 roles and get called upon within an hour’s notice.

BS: In the MUSIC MAN, the understudy was given 4 hours to learn all she had been studying (blocking, choreography, etc…) and did it without missing a beat. Not only is that quite an accomplishment for the actor but it also puts the rest of the cast at ease knowing the show goes on as expected.

KM: I’ve been that person….one time, we had an actor with a debilitating migraine and Scott Stoney and I split up the part between the dancing and the dialog! And in a touring West Side Story, as an understudy, I was called up for two roles.

PD: …and it’s a ton of work, I am going in to a role for my most recent show as an understudy. It is what we do to ensure things work!

Local theater has faced many challenges during the Pandemic. What do you say to ‘hungry audiences’ ready to return to see shows?

PD: Even before the pandemic, safety is always at the forefront of what we do in the theater. Still is.

KM: Everyone just needs to find their level of comfort. Obviously, we are hopeful everyone is vaccinated, boosted, masked….we all must be responsible during this time.

Brian Sharp

BS: …and please come see the shows. Send a donation, buy a ticket, buy a gift certificate. Tell your friends! We need the audience. Small, local arts organizations have suffered significantly financially.

JP: We can’t wait to see you….grab a mask and spend a few hours with us!

What show in particular would you love to see in-person as a tribute to a return to live theater?

PD: BEAUTIFUL. I really want to see the Carole King musical as a friend of mine is in the production.

KM: DEAR EVEN HANSEN. I have tried to see this show a few times, on Broadway, off-Broadway…now it’s coming to the Schuster and I won’t be here! I know the powerful story. It’s just nagging at me that I have not seen it live.

JP: SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, since we recently lost Sondheim. RAGTIME, for its timely message. ON THE

Jamie Pavlofsky

TOWN since it is a love letter to NYC.

BS: In NYC, I’m dying to see MUSIC MAN. I want to see COMPANY. I need to feel the crowd and the excitement of BROADWAY. It gives me energy to bring home…and locally I want to see all that I can!

TM: I am happy to see ANY show being produced in these extraordinary times. I will say that is the bigger challenge to a theater when you have a large cast. There is more opportunity for people to become ill, so safety is, again, the top priority!

Finally, Dayton is alive with the Arts! Why do you feel other places around the country look at Dayton as a ‘Beacon of Light’ for the performing arts?

TM: When I worked at Dayton Live, I remember casts would come from all over the place to our little town and say ‘all my friends say you haven’t lived until you’ve played Dayton!’ It’s true. We are a welcoming, creative community.

Philip Drennen

PD: I think it’s because we start young in Dayton. Muse Machine, area school programs, youth theaters…So many opportunities for kids!

JP: I think we have a spirit that attracts artists to come and be with us so they can soak up the great energy we have in Dayton!

BS: We can thank Kettering and Patterson for believing that having a strong arts community would attract the right executives and their families to the arts organizations!  It has long been said (and true) that Dayton has more theater than Cincinnati and Columbus combined.

KM: It’s ‘In The Water.’ Seriously. We are where five rivers meet and with that comes an incredible energy. Home to inventions, patents, creativity….there is an openness here, and acceptance of creative people. Edgar Casey said ‘Dayton is a Karma Center.’ It has

a natural energy…and I believe it!

A huge thank you to our resident theater folks….and now,  let’s all get back to the theater…so that, as Grizabella reminds us….we can ‘Let the Memory LIVE AGAIN!’

Cirque’s Pleasant ‘Dream’, A Holiday High Point.

December 22, 2021 By Joshua Stucky

Nutcrackers, dancers, snow and songs. Sounds like a typical holiday event, but Cirque Dreams Holiday at the Victoria is anything but standard fare. We all have become familiar with the Cirque brand….acrobats, magicians, oddities….and they’ve arrived en force in Dayton! The 90-minute show, in 2 Acts, moves quickly, with some stunning ‘sideshow’ style moments  and solid aerobatic performances. Set to a loosely based ‘Nutcracker’ theme, the background highlights larger than life props, and chorus characters dressed in candy-striped sweetness.

One of the best parts of the show is watching and listening to those folks in the audience….kids with their mouths agape as a lady wrapped in cloth, suspended from the ceiling, seems to lose control in a quick roll to earth, only to stop just short of her demise. Loud claps, and uneasy ‘phews’ fill the space. Adults. watching in semi-horror as a contortionist twists 6 ways from Sunday, muttering ‘ewwws’ and ‘ouches!’ And, of course, the occasional, ‘Oh brother…’ when the tongue-in-cheek cheesy moments hit the stage. (There are a few!)

The dangling rope artist is exceptional, the hula-hooper is spectacular and the King and Queen Sugar Plum are the climax in terms of awe-factor! But, for me, and oddly, it was the high-spirited jumprope artists that made the impression. Smiling, without fail, and getting the audience into a clapping frenzy, the jumpers appear to hit 60mph, and it was just plain fun! The lady behind me saying ‘I’d have a heart attack doing that, but it looks so invigorating!’…..ummmm, don’t try that at home!

Kids will love the Holidaze as it never really slows down, and when it does, the bass filled music never lets us ‘rest’ long enough to take a breath. (Intermission is short, so grab that wine, pronto!) The show starts on-time and stays on-time, for parents. that’s a great thing to know.

The only real drawback to Holidaze is the story itself. We get moments of narration, and insights into what Clara wants for Christmas, but honestly, it’s not necessary and makes little sense. At one point, Clara gets her chance in the air, and you are left wondering, ‘Did Clara ask to be catapulted for Christmas?’

All that aside, it’s good, clean fun. The magician does his level best to engage the audience in a second act ‘sing-along’ and the ‘narrator’ stays the course by crooning some holiday hits. You’ll enjoy it….your kids will love it….and you will all leave with the proverbial ‘I wonder how they did that?’

Cirque Dream Holidaze is at the Victoria Theater 12/21- 12/26.

Tickets range from $35-$85.

‘Season’s Greetings’ satisfies the Ho-Ho-Humbugs!

December 11, 2021 By Joshua Stucky

Grab that Ho-Ho-Mojito, a pack of pretzels and settle in at the PNC Arts Annex for a little Christmas Cheer.  From the moment it kicks off with a jazzed-up version of ‘This Christmas,’  we are reminded that the HOLIDAYS are back! No more bah-humbug, isolation or streaming television necessary. It’s live and it’s lively. That alone is something to sing about!

Philip Drennen and Gina Handy provide an energetic  3-act  Christmas show, backed up by Deron Bell and his Merry-Makers. Each song, though familiar, seems to take on a live of its own when the band infuses jazz, swing and…yep…FUNK! There are some truly memorable moments in the set. ‘It’s Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas’ takes on a smooth almost etherial tone. ‘The Christmas Song’ gives you a somber start, but an uplifting finish. And for the purest, Handy nails ‘Merry Christmas, Darling.’  The one you will leave loving is ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside.’ It’s fun, silly and timely!

Centered in the audience is a mailbox, where requests are taken, and performed during the 2nd and 3rd act. This makes for some fun chat with the audience. You learn of people’s wishes for the Holiday, and why certain songs ‘mean so much.’  It is truly the magnificent talent of Bell’s band that allows the show to flow. They seamlessly answer requests with spot-on versions of Christmas classics, and then some.

Dayton, once again, proves you don’t need to search for talent outside of our city limits. Take special note of the duets, as Handy and Drennen blend, back-up and harmonize with each as if they’VE been doing it for years!

‘Season’s Greetings’ is not big, and that is the point. It’s intimate, close-knit…more of a family ‘sing-along.’ The Holidays are about gathering…and laughing….and reminiscing. With all of that in mind, get your tickets for this charmer. Bring your mom, grandma….the one you love….and remember what Karen carpenter sang, ‘Everyday’s a Holiday when I’m next to you!’ That’s it…that’s this show, in a nutshell!!

DayTONS of Shopping: Purchasing with a Purpose….Grace Lane Boutique!

December 9, 2021 By Joshua Stucky

The big box stores have a huge advantage over the little guy….but where they run off the rails is in promoting ethical practices! Enter Grace Lane Boutique, a shop solely cemented in the idea that sales can serve the greater good. “It all started for me with the Bangladesh garment factory collapse in 2013. Many favorite brands of folks were made there…and on that day 1200 people died. I was like, what in the world are we doing?” said Danielle Goodman, the store’s proprietor. “I don’t think people realize what they are supporting when they buy certain brands, but we can do better!” And better is the name of the game at Grace Lane. Cozy, comfortable and a sense of peaceful shopping await in her 2 locations. (133 East 4th Street in Dayton & 4395 Holly Dr. at the Greene.)

The store is warm and the lighting suggests more than an in and out kind of experience. Each bar of soap, pair of socks or candle has a connection to ‘do the right thing’ in society. “I try to keep my eye on products that make a difference. Human trafficking, ethical sourcing, fair trade and fair treatment of women really resonate with me. It matters.” And with that, the brands are top notch and LOCAL! Dault Pottery (Bellbrook), Jill’s Jewelry (Clayton) and 11th Candle Company (Columbus) are just a few of the vendors represented. “Conscious Step Socks are all about doing better for the world. They are a top seller in my store. People want to do the right thing and support companies who support people.” One more vendor of note is Thistle Farms, a Tennessee company that uses it sales to help women with addiction, find them jobs and provide counseling. It is located in Nashville. Their theme is Healing, Hope & Freedom for Women Survivors. https://thistlefarms.org.

Clothing is the biggest seller in Grace Lane, but there is plenty to see. “We try to keep finding the right items for the boutique that are also mission driven.” Beyond the merchandise, and the coziness, you feel the love of the game. Danielle embraces people and their needs in a way that is genuine and sincere. As in any business, what drives the dollar is relationships, and Danielle gets that. You feel like family when you grab your goodies and head out the door. “I want my clients to feel good, and I want to feel good about what they have purchased. So many of them are thrilled to know they are making a difference. It’s that awareness that really drives me!”

There is plenty to gift in the boutique for the Holidays.  Stocking Stuffers, dresses, handbags, jewelry….the list is endless. There is not better way to not only help one of Dayton’s small businesses, but to go beyond and help those in need elsewhere than to visit Grace Lane. She has done the research. and for you it’s all about trying it on and realizing it feels good to do good!
