The Sugar Guild – New Downtown Brunch Spot Opens

November 26, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Chef DD

The Sugar Guild Bakery & Cafe opened it’s doors quietly a couple of months ago in the District Provisions building on Wayne Ave.  Serving up brunch on Saturday & Sunday from 8am – 3pm, they are slowing building up their business.

Chef DD Pearson , originally from England moved here about 3 years ago, following her brother to the states.  Having worked at Jimmie’s Ladder 11 for about 3 years, with encouragement from owner Susie Brandell, DD decided it was time to try her own place.  When she met with Chip Kennedy, owner of the District Provisions building she said “that their creative process was similar and he told her to just run with it.”  She shares that she “hope to be a destination to stop for coffee and breakfast and  over time we’ll add a menu with soups, sandwiches and salads, adding a deli that does boxed lunches and delivery” in what she’ll call District by Day.

She’d also like folks to thing of her space as a place for the community, that can host special events, they already have a wedding reception scheduled.   Signage for the building is coming soon and she says their will continue to be improvements made on the building an more added.

Here are the current menus:

521 Wayne Ave. The Sugar Guild

The Sweet Black n Blue Chicken Sammy is unbelievable! House baked focaccia with a marinated chicken breast that’s wood fired to perfection! Then we layer our sugared maple bacon on and fresh spinach! and we finish it with a whipped blue cheese spread.

While you are there,  grab a Chai Latte and a GIANT snickerdoodle or for a truly decadent treat, try one of their giant cinnamon rolls, baked to perfection in the wood burning oven,  served on the skillet they were baked on and completely coated from edge to EDGE in orange silk glaze.

The are taking reservations for private parties, The Chef’s Table experience & Holiday desserts!!

The team that runs this place!

November 21, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Company 7 BBQ Claims 11th Best of the Best Title

October 16, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

The National Barbecue News has named Company 7 BBQ, one of the 21 Best of the Best 2021 Barbecue Restaurants in America. This is the 11th consecutive year in a row that Company 7 has been recognized as an annual Best of the Best Barbecue restaurant in the entire USA.

The Barbecue News Magazine, the world’s no.1 publication dedicated to all things BBQ, released its updated guide to “Best of the Best Barbecue Restaurants in America” for the month of October. Company 7 BBQ is one of 21 on the October 2021 list and the only restaurant named for the entire state of Ohio. The “Best of the Best” guide has currently awarded this honor to only 21 barbecue restaurants across America in the past year. To be eligible for this “Best of the Best” list a restaurant must be taste-tested, without notice or announcement, by an affiliate of the Barbecue News Magazine. The honor is for a one-year period, at which time the restaurant is re-tested in the same manner to see if they make the grade for the following year.

‘It is an amazing honor to secure the Best of the Best Barbeque award even once, but to secure it 11 years in a row humbles us and rededicates us to even higher standards of BBQ excellence and customer care, share owners Bill & Mary Grilliot, Patrick, Moira, & Sean Murty and Will, Jessica, & Lily Grilliot.  “We know this would not have been possible without all the tremendous support we have received from our much-appreciated customers and staff, especially during the Covid crisis we have all endured together. We are also especially proud that we are the only “Best of the Best” BBQ restaurant in Ohio.”
The award is made after undercover restaurant visits and tastings by National Barbecue News affiliates. We are also especially proud that we are the only “Best of the Best” BBQ restaurant in Ohio. Here’s a sample of what you’ll find on the Company 7 menu:

Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park Celebrates Birthday

October 16, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park was established on this day in 1992. The park is composed of multiple sites around the Dayton area, but the Wright Cycle Company building was at the center of its creation. The building was saved from demolition by Jerry Sharkey and our friends at Aviation Trail Inc. in the early 1980s. Sharkey purchased the building, helped restore it, and donated it to the National Park Service. He and other dedicated individuals successfully campaigned and convinced Congress that a national park dedicated to preserving the story of Wilbur and Orville Wright and Paul Laurence Dunbar was imperative.
President George H.W. Bush signed the bill and Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park was formed. The park’s first interpretive ranger was brought on in 1996, and he’s still here! The park has changed a bit over the last 29 years, but Ranger Bob and the awe-inspiring experience of standing where Wilbur and Orville were working 125 years ago remains.

Dayton Aviation Heritage NHP consists of five sites that tell the stories of Wilbur Wright, Orville Wright, and Paul Laurence Dunbar.

The five sites of Dayton Aviation Heritage NHP offer you the opportunity to experience the historically refurnished Wright brothers’ printing office, walk through an original Wright brothers’ bicycle shop, see the Wright brothers’ third airplane, follow Wilbur and Orville’s footsteps at the Huffman Prairie Flying Field, visit Hawthorn Hill (the Wrights’ mansion), and experience Paul Laurence Dunbar’s last home.

Hole N One Donuts Opens Friday

October 13, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Formerly the manager of The Donut Haus Bakery in Springboro, 19 year old Luke Lawrence is now opening his own shop in Moraine.   With the blessing of Donut Haus owner Ryan Trip, who has mentored Luke, while he worked there, he has earned the right to all of the Recipes of the Donut Haus and Bear Creek Donuts. When it came to naming the business, he says his dad helped him come up with the name, Hole N One, which plays off life long  love of golf. You’ll notice decor elements paying homage to golf in the builing. While he says he never really expected to open his own business, it just kind of feel into place, with Ryan helping him through some of the steps needed to open the bakery.

Luke signs the lease and get the keys from realtor Kelly Gray.

For  opening day on  Friday October 15th they will be doing a free coffee with the purchase of a dozen or more! Please call ahead for  larger orders just to help so you don’t have to wait in line!

He’ll feature oversized donuts, huge Apple Fritters, oversized Cinnamon Rolls as well as gourmet coffee.  You’ll also find baked goods like cookies and muffins. Also be sure and try Luke’s favorite-  apple turnovers, he’ll also offer cherry as well. New Mexican Eatery Opens in Tipp City

October 13, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

Rafael Ramirez

Rafael Ramirez was born in Mexico, moved with his family to California when he was 4. His father and his uncles bought a restaurant and he grew up around the business.  With over 17 years of experience in the business, he spent the past 3 1/2 years working at El Tequila restaurant in Piqua, learning all the roles needed to run the eatery. He knew he wanted to own his own business, so when the former Chin’s location became available in Tipp City he  jumped at the chance to make his dream come true.

After 4 months of remodeling, bringing the kitchen up to code and hiring, he was ready to open. His wife, who will work in the restaurant,  helped him choose the name, Frida’s Mexican Kitchen & Bar.  His 2 sisters are also working as servers. After a 10 day soft opening, this Friday is the grand opening for the eatery, which will open without a liquor license. He applied about 4 months ago and due to Covid, the state is running behind on processing, but Rafael say he expects it any day now!

The restaurant which seats just over a 100 with patio seating for 20, will be open seven days a week, and feature daily specials. The menu is full of traditional Mexican favorites, but also features some specialty items like Mexican sushi.  Rafael explains that this is all the rage in Mexico and is a mix of Japanese and Mexican, with most of the sushi being deep fried. It’s listed on the menu as La Casa Azul de Frida:

Tuna Sashimi

Mini Sushi Bombs

You can order online for take out as well.

Miami Valley Meals to Host Turkey Takeaway Meals For Thanksgiving

October 12, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

For the second year in a row, Miami Valley Meals (MVM) will host a Turkey Takeaway Event for those in need across the Miami Valley. The event is being held this year with support from presenting sponsor, the Feast of Giving.

The Feast of Giving is an annual Dayton Holiday tradition providing Thanksgiving fare and festive fellowship. This community affair has served over 7,000 guests per year since 2009 and was most recently enjoyed in the Dayton Convention Center in 2019. The event was cancelled last year due to COVID-19 and the ongoing pandemic is forcing the event not to be held this year.

Although Daytonians will not be able to gather together for the Feast of Giving this year, the organization is supportive of MVM’s efforts to ensure all have a meal to enjoy this holiday.

Dr. Stephen Levitt, team member of the Feast of Giving, had this to say,

“The Feast of Giving is both excited and honored to support Miami Valley Meals in sharing a common goal of providing Thanksgiving meals to those who want and need them in our community. These meals are prepared, provided and served with dignity.”

Dr. Levitt goes on to say, “Although this is not our traditional event at the Dayton Convention Center, it provides an excellent Thanksgiving meal during difficult times. We are most grateful to Miami Valley Meals and their staff for making this possible. The Feast of Giving wishes everyone a happy and healthy holiday.”

In 2020, MVM distributed 10,000 frozen Thanksgiving meals at two sites along with increased service through their regular partners. This year, the goal is to distribute 15,000 meals.

MVM meals

Distributions this year will again take place the day before Thanksgiving, Wednesday, November 24, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Trotwood-Madison High School and The University of Dayton Arena. Guests are to stay in their vehicles, follow signage for the drive-through, and meals will be placed in their vehicles. Masks are required. This is a first come, first served event.

In addition, MVM has partnered with the Dayton Young Black Professionals to add two smaller satellite locations in West Dayton at the Omega Baptist Church and the Dayton Boys & Girls Club. Distributions at these satellite locations will be from 12 p.m to 3 p.m.

Formerly working out of gracious host kitchens at House of Bread, the Life Enrichment Center and Lindy’s at Daybreak, MVM is now housed under one roof with its own kitchen. Miami Valley Meals is a partner agency of The Foodbank who will support this event with ingredient sourcing, temporary storage and trucks on the day of the event. MVM also reconnected with its former production partner, Lindy’s at Daybreak, to provide dessert for this year’s meals.

“The Turkey Takeaway event is made possible by tremendous community partnership, a supportive board and a hard-working team. We are all working towards the same goal — to provide a sense of normalcy, warmth and respite from difficult situations,” said MVM Executive Director, Amanda DeLotelle. “If you are struggling, we hope that the meal we provide makes your Thanksgiving a bit easier and brighter.”

Volunteer opportunities will be announced later this month on MVM’s website (miamivalleymeals.org) and its social media channels (@MiamiValleyMeals on Facebook and Instagram).
