Exhibit Exploring Transformative Innovations in Aerospace at Air Force Museum

September 15, 2022 By Dayton937

“Above and Beyond,” an interactive science exhibition exploring transformative innovations in aerospace, will launch Saturday, Sept. 17 at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.

The 500-square-metre exhibition will offer an unprecedented interactive demonstration of advances in aviation and aerospace, from the first powered flights to the newest innovations on Earth and in space. Flight simulation, immersive theater, touch-table displays, and augmented reality are examples of exhibit technology offering an experiential understanding of the scientific concepts behind flight.

After entering an immersive wraparound theater, visitors can venture into five galleries comprising dozens of interactive displays.  Exhibit goers can ride to the edge of space in a simulated space elevator or test their own supersonic fighter-jet design in a virtual high-speed flying competition. A group flying experience with motion-sensing image capture helps visitors sense what it’s like to fly like a bird in a flock, while exploring the forces of flight.

“While we celebrate the U.S. Air Force’s 75th Anniversary with a look at the past, present and future it’s the perfect time to launch ‘Above and Beyond’ at the museum,” said National Museum of the USAF Education Division Chief, Michael Brimmer. “This immersive interactive exhibit is a tremendous way to help spark student interest in what could be possible in the future and encourage them to continue studying the fields of science, technology, engineering and math – or STEM.”

Located in the museum’s 4th building, “Above and Beyond” is free to all visitors and will be open during regular museum hours of 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily from Sept. 17 – Dec.15.

“Above and Beyond” is produced by Evergreen Exhibitions in association with Boeing, in collaboration with NASA and the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. In addition, the Air Force Museum Foundation has also partnered with CenterPoint Energy, which in part allows the museum to host free interactive aviation experiences including the “Above and Beyond” exhibit presented by Boeing. Federal endorsement is not implied.

Throughout 2022 the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force has proudly celebrated the 75th anniversary of the United States Air Force by hosting a variety of events and exhibits to share the history of the Air Force and the stories of our airmen with the public. A complete schedule of events and exhibits is available at  https://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/Upcoming/Events/75th-anniversary/.

The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, is the world’s largest military aviation museum. Dinosaurs Storm the Air Force Museum June 12th

June 10, 2021 By Lisa Grigsby

National Museum of the U.S. Air Force visitors will have a unique opportunity to see dinosaurs in the museum’s galleries during “Operation: Dinosaur” on Saturday, June 12 from 4-7 p.m. The museum will close at 8 pm.

The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force often focuses its events and programs on STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. This time the museum will focus on an area of science it doesn’t often get a chance to explore – paleontology. In addition to learning about the nuts and bolts of aircraft, visitors can learn about the fossils and bones of dinosaurs!

During this free event visitors can see a carnotaurus, raptor, baby raptor, stegosaurus, triceratops and tyrannosaurus rex. These realistic dinosaurs, presented by T.A.G. Art Company, can be as big as 9 ft. tall; they can move, blink, open their mouths and ROAR! Building 2 has been designated a “roar-free” zone for visitors that may have sensory-sensitivity.

Other activities for kids and families to enjoy during the evening include a dinosaur question game, tornado demonstration, youth fossil dig and dinosaur-related giveaways (while supplies last).

In addition, a paleontologist and geologist from the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery will join the event and share their knowledge of dinosaurs.

The museum simulators are adding prehistoric-themed rides to their line-up to include a movie ride titled “Dino Safari” and a virtual reality ride titled “Dive in Prehistoric Seas VR.” (There is a cost per ride).

The Museum Store will remain open until 8 pm. The Valkyrie Café will remain open until 7:30 pm and will add dino nuggets to their menu for this event. For more info check the museum’s website.

‘Womein in The Air Force” Exhibit Opens at Air Force Museum

March 2, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

A new series of displays highlighting women’s achievements in their civilian and military careers with an emphasis on the U.S. Air Force and its predecessors will be officially opened during a live-streamed virtual event on March 5 at 6:30 p.m. (Tune-in beginning at 6:20 p.m. for a pre-event video at www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/Upcoming/Women-in-Air-Force/).

The exhibit, titled “Women in the Air Force: From Yesterday into Tomorrow,” covers historical issues, changes in laws and attitudes, and women’s contributions to the Air Force mission. These displays, which are located throughout the museum, contain one of a kind artifacts used by women in the Air Force from many different eras.

In the Early Years Gallery, visitors can learn how British female pilots led the way beginning with Mary Wilkins-Ellis, who joined the Britain’s Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA), and transported aircraft from factories to active service squadrons during World War II.

The story of Jacqueline Cochran, who was ranked among the top female pilots of her era by setting an incredible number of records, and breaking men’s distance, altitude, and speed achievements can be seen in the Early Years and World War II Galleries, as well as throughout the museum. Cochran would go on to become the founder and director of the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) program, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal – the highest non-combat award – for her work in 1945.

New displays in the second building include one on the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, which was signed into law by President Truman in 1948, and authorized women to serve permanently in all military branches. Among the stories featured in this building include that of SSgt. Esther Blake, who became the first woman in the Air Force by enlisting on the first minute, of the first hour, of the first day that Air Force authorized women’s participation; and the heroic actions of Lt. Regina Aune and Lt. Harriet Goffinett, who carried many children to safety during Operation Babylift.

The drive to break down barriers is further illustrated by the Significant Women Silhouette – a uniquely designed display that introduce visitors to those who created new opportunities for women. The exhibit covers a diverse range of achievements such as the first American woman to fly solo in an airplane (Blanche Stuart Scott); the first woman to fly non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean (Amelia Earhart); the Air Force’s first female physician (Capt. Dorothy Elias); and the “Bouncing Bettys” award-winning munitions team.

Among the many “female firsts” on display in the third building are the first 10 graduates of the U.S. Air Force Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) program; the first female fighter pilot (Jeannie Flynn Leavitt); the first female aerial gunner (Airman Vanessa Dobos); the first female to fly a fighter aircraft in combat (Capt. Martha McSally); and the first female F-35 pilot (Lt. Col. Christine Mau).

The story of pilot Nichole Malachowski, who took her first solo flight at age 16 (earning her pilot’s license before her driver’s license), and later became the first female pilot on any U.S. military high performance jet team as a member of the Thunderbirds in 2005, is also featured in this building.

Amazing stories of courage are highlighted including Air National Guard pilot Lt. Heather Penney of the 121st Fighter Squadron. On Sept. 11, 2001, Penney along with another pilot received one-way orders to stop hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 as it headed towards Washington, D.C. Armed with shoot to kill orders, but no weapons, they were on a suicide mission with the full intention of ramming the Boeing 757 in order to protect national security. After sweeping the D.C. airspace for over an hour, the pilots learned the passengers had forced the aircraft down in a Pennsylvania field.

Another ground-breaking display titled Moving Towards Equality highlights milestones in legislation that brought policy changes on issues such as automatic discharge for pregnancy or having custody of minor children; the expansion of women’s rights allowing women to have the ability to serve in any military occupation, and further opportunities for advancement. In addition, female leaders who have overcome roadblocks, defeated biases and led the way in recent years are featured in a display titled Women Leading the Way.

Finally, in the fourth building visitors can learn about the first American female astronaut to go into space (Sally Ride); the first U.S. military woman in space who was also the first woman to work aboard the International Space Station (Maj. Susan Helms); the first female space shuttle pilot (Maj. Eileen Collins); the first women to serve as commanders in orbit at the same time (Col. Pamela Melroy and Peggy Whitson); and some of the most important discoveries and inventions that female Air Force scientists, engineers, mathematicians, medical professionals, and artists have developed over the years.

According to National Museum of the U.S. Air Force Curator Christina Douglass, telling the story of what women have overcome over many decades was an amazing experience and something she hopes future generations will come to appreciate.

“The ‘Women in the Air Force’ exhibit is packed with moving stories that exemplify the passion and dedication that women have had to have in order to overcome certain stereotypes – just to be able to serve our nation,” said Douglass. “My hope is that those who come to visit this exhibit will gain a better understanding about the sacrifices that were made by women in the past; never take what we have for granted; and are inspired to continue to advocate for equality.”

Air Force Museum Expands Virtual Experiences

April 14, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Being temporarily closed as a public health precaution in relation to COVID-19 (Coronavirus) has not stopped the National Museum of the United States Air Force from sharing the Air Force story with online visitors from around the world.

In addition to continuing its heritage stewardship duties, the museum has also expanded its digital museum experience through the virtual tour. The virtual tour allows visitors to take a 360-degree, self-guided tour of the entire museum by navigating from gallery to gallery either by using a drop-down map or by following navigational arrows connecting the individual nodes. Icons indicate hotspots where the visitor can get additional information such as videos, audio and links to online resources.

Now visitors who are taking the virtual tour can also access online educational activities such as lesson plans, word searches, coloring sheets and other items that can be done at home, along with new videos including first-hand accounts from veterans who served on missions from several different eras. The virtual tour also has virtual reality capabilities (using Google Headsets) and social applications such as the snapshot tool (camera icon) which allows you to screen grab the location you’re at and post to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media sites.

All of these online tools and applications are free and available to the public.

According to National Museum of the U.S. Air Force Digital Curator Bryan Carnes, the virtual tour is not only a great way to learn more about the Air Force and all that the museum has to offer, but also serves as a gateway to many of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) applications that are available on the museum’s website as well.

“Our virtual tour has always been a great tool for planning a future visit to the museum, but it also offers so much more that those of all ages can access from the comfort of their homes,” said Carnes. “From 360-degree gallery tours, educational content, virtual reality and STEM applications, and social media connections, you can access it all 24 hours a day from the museum’s virtual tour.”

New Space Shuttle Exhibit Open Feb 26th at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force

February 24, 2014 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

140131-F-IO108-002National Museum of the U.S. Air Force visitors will be cleared for liftoff when the museum’s new Space Shuttle Exhibit opens to the public on Feb. 26.
The exhibit, which features NASA’s first Crew Compartment Trainer, allows visitors to experience the size and shape of an actual space shuttle orbiter by entering the payload bay and looking into the flight deck and mid-deck levels.

Following the arrival of the Crew Compartment trainer in summer 2012, work began on the design and construction of a full-scale representation of a NASA shuttle payload bay, engine, and tail sections, along with a 60-seat dedicated educational area or Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Learning Node, by Display Dynamics, Inc. of Clayton, Ohio.

These portions of the exhibit, along with visitor observation and access structures, have been completed and the Teal Ruby satellite has been placed inside the payload bay. In addition, space-related videos will be available for viewing in the STEM Learning Node (when it is not in use for other scheduled programs).

Future plans call for the museum to continue populating the exhibit with additional artifacts such as space suits and provide interpretive information about topics such as astronauts, space science, living in space, and the Air Force’s role in space. Eventually, the exhibit will be moved to a new Space Gallery in the museum’s fourth building as part of a multi-phase, long-term expansion plan to house the museum’s growing space collection, as well as the Presidential Aircraft Gallery, Research & Development Gallery and Global Reach Gallery.

According to Museum Director Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Jack Hudson, the exhibit is truly unique and will serve as an important educational tool.

“We are very pleased to open this one-of-a-kind Space Shuttle Exhibit and STEM Learning Node, and we thank Display Dynamics, Inc. for their hard work in helping us make these structures a reality,” Hudson said. “This exhibit will inspire us all to learn more about space and the role of our Air Force in space, and we hope that when you visit – whether that be in-person or online – it will inspire you, too, and become one of the vehicles that launches a new generation of Americans who are well-educated about space and STEM.”

Other components of the Space Shuttle Exhibit include two interactive space shuttle landing simulators, which were added last summer and allow visitors to test their skill at landing a space shuttle orbiter. Designed by Historic Space Systems of Danville, Ohio, the simulators are representative of a space shuttle commander’s and pilot’s stations, and feature a reproduction of the forward portion of the space shuttle flight deck with internal cockpit dimensions that replicate its actual size.
