Empanadas

Chef Margot of Salar Partners with DLM To Sell Empanadas

October 12, 2023 By Guest Contributor

When Salar owner and Executive Chef Margot Blondet announced plans to open a second restaurant, Manna Uptown, in Centerville, area foodies rejoiced. Now, we’re excited to share that one of Salar’s flagship dishes, empanadas, will be featured in our Gourmet Takeaway at Dorothy Lane Market as a ready-to-reheat option.

Chef Margot, a Peruvian native, opened Salar in 2013 excited to share with the area her native cuisine along with some global fusion twists. Manna Uptown opened its doors this past spring. Both restaurants are immaculate with clean, crisp tables and interior designs that are a visual feast. At Salar, where the empanadas are made, the warming wood hues meld with cooling metal textures, a cascading water wall, and crystal chandeliers.

“In Peru, we’re all about big flavors,” Chef Margot says. The restaurant’s bestselling empanadas embody just that—Peruvian big flavors with an Asian twist. “Every empanada is made by hand. Even the dough is rolled and then smashed by hand. It takes time, but every one is done with love,” she says. To start, Margot will be sharing the popular Beef Empanada with us at DLM, featuring a lomo saltado filling of beef seasoned and cooked with onions, peppers, and lots of heat.

When enjoying at home, she recommends reheating in an oven or enjoying at room temperature and dressing with a shower of powdered sugar and squeeze of citrus.

You may be wondering why Margot would want to share access to one of the restaurant’s flagship dishes with us here at DLM? “I wanted to put them out there at DLM so people could also have them in their home easily, too,” she says. “I love to expose people to our flavors and food.”

Where to Celebrate National Empanada Day in Dayton

April 8, 2016 By Lisa Grigsby

These tasty and convenient Latin-American-style turnovers can be eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They can be served as appetizers or snacks, but they can also easily make a full and satisfying meal.

These delicious bundles can be prepared with so many different types of fillings, from traditional savory fillings to mouthwatering sweet fillings. There are very traditional fillings, called rellenos or condumios in Spanish, that are different from one country to another. Even within the same country, different regions might have specific empanadas that they are known for. However, when it comes to options for empanada fillings, the sky is the limit, you can stick to the classic fillings or you can create your own based on inspiration from other dishes. You can combine flavors and ingredients that you love, or simply use the ingredients you have available at the moment.

You can even buy ready-made empanada discs at many Latin grocery stores, but you can also easily make the dough at home.  The most popular empanada dough is made with wheat flour. However, empanada dough can be made with corn flour or corn meal, mashed plantains, potatoes, yuca or cassava, sweet potatoes, and more. Sweet empanada dough can also be made with chocolate, almond flour, spiced with cinnamon and clove, with citrus rind, and more flavors.

Today, April 8 is National Empanada Day so here are five places you can enjoy them in Dayton:

Arepas & Co also offers Calentado (Colombian-style breakfast) on Saturdays, Tres Leches (three milk) cupcake for dessert, and fruit-flavored colas. Our dishes are vegetarian and vegan friendly as well as gluten free.

Arepas & Co will be celebrating its official grand opening July 19th, 20th, and 21st which coincides with the celebration of Colombia’s Independence Day on July 20th.

Arepas and Co. opens on Thursdays and Fridays from 11 am to 3 pm, and Saturdays from 8 am to 3 pm. Our location is at the PNC Second Street Market, 600 E. Second St. Dayton, OH 45402. Questions or comments can be directed to Lisa Perdomo at 937-620-4099.

“Our dishes are inspired by recipes that have been made popular by street vendors in Colombia, who are known for providing simple yet delicious foods” said Lisa Perdomo, owner and operator of Arepas & Co. “In fact, the way we marinade our meats is a recipe passed down to my husband by one of his aunts in Colombia whose finger-licking meals are highly rated by friends and family” added Lisa.

The small eatery is co-owned by Jhembert Perdomo, who was born and raised in Colombia. “The PNC Second Street Market is the perfect venue for us” said Jhembert, “we want to be known for our simple, innovative and affordable concept that reflects the ever growing diversity of Dayton and its surrounding communities. People come to the market with an open mind, looking for something different and we want to be associated with that connotation. It was time to introduce recipes that can cater to a wide variety of patrons, from the meat lover to those with sensitive dietary needs.”
