Maker's Mark

Maker’s Mark Releases Ohio Only Cellar Selections

November 19, 2022 By Dayton937

Together with the Maker’s Mark distillery team, Ohio Liquor (OHLQ) has selected these five unique expressions using custom stave profiles to reflect quintessential seasonal flavors and aromas. From pumpkin pie to apple cider to indulgent red velvet cake, each expression suggests a sweetly nostalgic moment warmed up with woody inflections imparted by oak staves. Bottled with care to make Ohio spirits bright, they are not available outside of our state.

Perfect for gifting or sipping at festive gatherings, each bottle captures the spirit of the holidays — and Maker’s Mark’s signature attention to craft. The product will be released live at a select number of OHLQ locations on November 18, 2022, at a price of $69.99 (plus tax) and will be available until it has sold out.

CASK CHAI LATTE

The spicy aroma of cinnamon, black pepper, and anise carries through to a rich, creamy, roasted taste; a balanced finish lingers and charms with accents of baking spices.

Stave profile: Seared French Cuvée (6); Maker’s Mark 46 (1); Roasted French Mendiant (2); Toasted French Spice (1)

WARM APPLE CIDER

Aromatic allspice and the bright, honeyed notes of crisp pear and baked apple invite a pie-like flavor of fresh orchard fruit, toasted brown sugar, and cinnamon that finishes warmly at the back of the palate with accents of vanilla.

Stave profile: Baked American Pure 2 (3); Seared French Cuvée (1); Maker’s Mark 46 (3); Toasted French Spice (3)

RED VELVET

An enticing aroma of rich buttercream with hints of chocolate delivers a full-bodied flavor of cocoa powder and toasted vanilla that lands mid-palate and dries to a sweet, dark chocolate finish.

Stave profile: Baked American Pure 2 (3); Seared French Cuvée (3); Roasted French Mendiant (4)

SINGLE STAVE EXPRESSION

TOASTED FRENCH SPICE

The unique, lightly floral aroma of ripe cherry with nutty accents develops to a deeper flavor of dark, dried fruit with hints of leather and tobacco, and finishes sweetly at the front to mid-palate.

One Of A Kind Bourbon at Dewberry 1850

January 28, 2020 By Bryan Suddith

Maker’s Mark Distillery

Attending college in Kentucky introduced me to bourbon before beer. Bourbon and whiskey was prolific in far western Kentucky where I spent 5 years in the early 90’s before bourbon became trendy. In dry Calloway County bourbon was popular in frat houses and backyard parties before there were release parties and long lines for the latest small batch.

I took a liking to Maker’s Mark. For my palette the nearby Maker’s Mark was a great fit. Smooth and caramel sweet on the front, a slow spice finish. It was my go to. By 2005 I had become an official Maker’s Mark Ambassador. Telling the world about Maker’s Mark.

That brings me to Dewberry 1850 and their new bar and restaurant. To my delight they have created and bottled their own Maker’s Private Select recipe and it is tasty. This one of a kind bourbon is only available in the contemporary and well appointed bar in the lobby of the Dayton Marriott hotel.

Unlike everyday bottles of Maker’s 46, Dewberry’s Private Select isn’t as sweet up front, heavier notes of vanilla and chocolate with a smooth yet peppery finish. I liked it alongside one of their Red Velvet cupcakes. The warm spice played well against the sweetness of the cupcake. Who doesn’t love cake and bourbon at lunch?

Here is their Makers Private Select recipe: 5 Seared French Cuvee, 2 Maker’s 46, 2 Roasted French Mocha and 1 Toasted French Spice. The staves are flavored via the amount of toasting or searing the oak pieces get from a flame.

In response to the growth of bourbon and the need to further differentiate themselves from a dozen other distilleries Maker’s Mark brought the world Maker’s 46.

Maker’s Mark 46™ was created in 2010 by Bill Samuels, Jr., In order to create something new, aged Maker’s Mark was re-barrelled and 10 seared French oak staves were added to the barrel and aged for an additional nine weeks. The product was a more robust and unique Maker’s. 46 represented the number of recipes (variations of seared and toasted staves) used to find the right combination.

Recently Maker’s opened up the “46 process” to bars and restaurants under the Private Select Product. The opportunity to create a unique version of Maker’s Mark 46. This recipe is created by altering the combinations of the wood staves added to the barrel.

While you can’t buy a bottle of Dewberry’s Private Select, you can grab it neat, over ice or in a cocktail at their bar in Dayton’s Marriott at UD. Beyond some delicious Maker’s Mark, they have their own barrel of Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve. Aged 9 years and really small batch (one barrel) it will be hard to find an exact replica of this bourbon anywhere else.

The Dewberry 1850 is the perfect spot for an after work drink with small plate and happy hour specials all week. Bring your laptop and stay late as the bar is equipped with an espresso machine with great coffees (and wifi) for those needing a place to plug in for late night work after the other coffee shops have closed. Bar is open until midnight.

Maker’s Mark Ohio Private Select Barrel Program Launches Aug. 24

August 21, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

The Ohio Division of Liquor Control has partnered with Maker’s Mark to create Ohio Private Select.  They traveled to Maker’s Mark’s distillery in Lorretto, Kentucky and worked with the Private Select team, led by Scott Mooney, to select two barrels specifically for Ohio. These barrels are different than other barrels programs because they selected the finishing staves used to create the flavor profile of the finished whiskey. In the Private Select barrel process, there are five different types of wood staves that are added to the base Maker Red Top at barrel strength. A total of 10 staves are placed in these barrels which creates 1,001 different flavor variations. With the selected staves in place inside the barrels, they are rested for an additional nine weeks in a temperature controlled area. The final product has notes of vanilla, caramel and mocha over a little spice and smoke.
Bottles go on sale for $65.36 plus tax when the participating Agencies open on Friday.

In Dayton the only store to stock this special bottle will be the Arrow Wine and Spirits located at 615 Lyons Road in Washington Township.

When you pick up your bottle of Ohio Private Select, be sure to also grab a taste profile card!
The Ohio Private Select taste profile includes:
  • One Stave: Baked American Pure 2 (sweet brown vanilla, caramel, brown spice)
  • One Stave: Seared French Cuvee (oaky, caramel, roasted/toasted)
  • Four Staves: Maker’s 46 (dried fruit, vanilla, spice)
  • Two Staves: Roasted French Mocha (char, maple, cacao)
  • Two Staves: Toasted French Spice (smoke, coumarin, spice)

About Maker’s Mark:

Bill Samuels Sr. had his own idea of how whisky should taste. So he abandoned the family recipe that was passed down six generations and set out to create his own. If he was going to make bourbon and put his name on it, he wanted one he could be proud of. And that meant bourbon that was more pleasing to the palate. He developed a new recipe based on locally grown grains. The most unique thing he did, however, was replace the traditional bourbon flavoring grain of rye with red winter wheat, which produced a much gentler taste.

Distilled in Lorretto, Kentucky, the barrels are rotated during aging — to ensure every barrel achieves the same flavor maturation. Every bottle of Maker’s Mark bourbon to taste – not by age – to ensure the same consistent taste and quality batch-to-batch, year-to-year. Currently, aging lasts approximately five and three quarters to seven years.
