Ohio Hip Hop Awards Summer Showcase Tour Stops in Beavercreek

June 15, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Eight years ago, the founders of the Ohio Hip Hop Awards & Music Conference came together with a mission to recognize those making a contribution in the Ohio urban music industry.  This ground breaking event has since grown to span a three day weekend every September,  bringing together thousands of industry professionals, artists and fans for networking socials, talent showcases, expert panels and industry parties.  The finale of the weekend is the red carpet awards show that recognizes Ohio’s best of rappers, singers, DJ’s, models, dancers, media outlets and numerous other contributors to a growing Ohio music scene.

jasonThe Ohio Hip Hop Awards board takes special pride in their several month process in which they directly interact with urban music scenes across the state to accurately represent the who’s who of each  market and give credit where it is due. This is done through the website www.ohiohiphopawards.com  where fans can nominate and vote in many different categories, such as best live venue, best college radio show, best club DJ, best album, best video and many, many more. In addition, every June the board members travel to eight different cities with the Ohio Hip Hop Awards Summer Showcase Tour, allowing local artists to compete in live performance showcases.

This year, the Dayton stop of the Ohio Hip Hop Awards Summer Showcase Tour will take place Saturday, June 15 at the live music venue One Eyed Jacks. Local artists are given the chance to compete for several valuable prizes that benefit their music career and exposure. The winner of the showcase will be given the chance to perform at either the Ohio Hip Hop Awards Show or Pre-party, an automatic nomination in the best live performance category, and inclusion in the Ohio Hip Hop Awards promotional material. The winner in the best live performance category will also headline the entire 2014 Ohio Hip Hop Awards Summer Showcase Tour.

The Dayton stop of the Summer Showcase Tour is hosted by local entertainment resource company Razdabar Sound & OHHAST12-1Management in conjunction with the Ohio Hip Hop Awards. Dayton’s very own nationally known DJ SKNO of the Core DJ’s will spin for the event, keeping the party live at all times. Urban music enthusiasts and supporters are warmly invited to come out and see the best that the Dayton music scene has to offer this Saturday. One Eyed Jacks is located at 2638 Colonel Glenn Highway in Fairborn, across from Wright State University. Doors open at 8pm, live performances to begin at 9pm. Admission is $10 at the door.

Mayliner Looking To Join Area Punk Rock Elite

March 27, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

The elderly hate it.  Some groups of people find it repulsive.  People question whether or not it’s actually considered music.  There are also those that would fight you for daring to speak out of line about what they are passionate about; those same individuals also say they have found something that makes them feel like they are part of a family.  What I am talking about is punk rock.

Punk rock music is beloved by many around the world.  The Ramones, The Clash, and Sex Pistols brought a brash, rebellious sound that was unapologetic and wild.  Full of energy and emotion, catching a punk show is unpredictable.  Expect a pit of people to start the intense participation of slamming into each other while forming a circle, a practice commonly known as moshing.  There is also a pretty good chance that people will be either crowd surfing or the one of the band members will be stage diving.  You never know what to expect, but you know that you are in for one crazy night.  In Dayton, we are fortunate that we have a great collection of punk rock bands taking local stages.  One band that should you should check out is Mayliner.  Mayliner consists of three memembers-guitarist/vocals Josh Caperton, bassist/vocal Chris Barnett, and drummer Paige Beller (Beller is also the lead singer of band Jasper the Colossal).

Caperton and Barnett have had Mayliner up and running a little over a year now, but the two have been playing and writing music since their high school days.  The two took part in numerous battle of the bands around the local area and were even asked to be part of the bands that they were competing against.  They have also been there for each other through thick and thin during their previous bands’ journeys.    Mayliner alone has had their share of lineup changes, with drummers coming and going up to last year.  However, both men agree that it doesn’t affect their progress.  “As long as I see Josh next to me, and he sees me next to him-it is all good,” Barnett says.

That chemistry and bond are just part of why they are one of the good up and coming punk bands around town.  Caperton and Barnett play with viciousness, with a rapid pace of play on each of their respective instruments.  The drum play of each of their songs is fast and heavy.  Mayliner wants to do one thing: play as loud as they possibly can, a staple in any punk rock band’s live sets.

“I have been told that we sound like The Who but faster”, Barnett says when asked how he would describe the band’s sound.  The songwriting is shared by both Caperton and Barnett.  They will go to each other and share what they have, keeping the process open and free.  The lyrics songs center on experiences that have come and gone throughout their lives including songs about occurrences and encounters that weren’t delightful.  However, those songs do go into how you overcome bad events and become better, and not let the bad define you as a person.

Mayliner and Jasper the Colossal are will be releasing an split EP from the local record company FM Records this Thursday. Each band will have about 4 songs on the release.  So how was this idea brought up you wonder…

“The idea of doing the split EP was up and in the air for over a year”, Caperton explains.  “We loved the idea of doing something with Jasper, maybe with recording one of their songs and they record one of ours.  We heard that Paige (Beller) went in the studio and recorded, so we went and did our thing.”

Be expecting some fantastic punk rock that will downright be a crime if not played at a maximum level.  After all, isn’t that what punk music is supposed to be played?!

This Thursday, Mayliner and Jasper the Colossal will be playing a split EP release party at One Eyed Jacks in Fairborn, Ohio.   Go out and see why Mayliner is truly one of the up and coming punk bands rocking around the Dayton area.

Open Mic Nights – A Musicians Beginning

January 7, 2013 By Dayton Most Metro 2 Comments

Mandy Jewell (photo credit: Jennifer Taylor Clarke)

When I was in college, I thought that it would be cool to fool around, impress the ladies, and pick up the acoustic guitar. Sadly with classes, hanging with friends, and pretty much being lazy-I never learned how to play.  I would never give up the guitar, however.  I always kept it in its black travel bag and placed it in my closet.  Recently-I decided that it’s the right time to unpack the instrument and develop a plan.  I will learn how to play, and perform in front of an audience during an open mic night.  If you are someone that is like me, and what’s to follow through on an idea, or if you want to start their journey on becoming a musician, open mic nights are a great start.  Here in Dayton, there are a couple of great open mic events throughout the week that you can perfect your craft at, and even get your name started.

The first open mic night we will discuss takes us to a small shopping center that is across Wright State University.  On Sunday nights at One Eyed Jacks in Fairborn,   the RnR Playdate, hosted by Jay Madewell and Todd the Fox is held.  Their concept of the open mic is very different than most.  For a 25 minute set, you can play with a drummer (Madewell), guitartist (Todd), bassist (Chris Barnett from the local band Mayliner).  If you choose to play solo, that’s fine.  Between sets, there are five minute comedy sets.  My first experience with this open mic night featured seeing what seemed like a reserved, coy woman named Mandy Jewell.  She walked up to the podium, and plugged in her guitar.  She sat down, took a deep breath, and waited to be introduced.  Todd grabbed the microphone and explained to the crowd that Jewell was in the process of having a largely successful Kickstarter campaign that would give the funds to travel to Nashville to record her first professional demo.  After hearing this, I couldn’t help but be intrigued to hear her play.  What took place for the next 25 minutes was something that I didn’t think I would expect.  This tiny framed young lady that seemed to be the person that would be considered a perfect example of being a wallflower proved me and everyone in the crowd otherwise.  Her guitar play and singing revealed a woman that has had sadness in her life, and that she is now rising from the wreckage.  She is stronger than most would give her.  Her voice was like if Mazzy Star decided to morph into someone else’s body.  Jewell spoke softly, which only built her charm level up more and more.  I can’t wait to see where Mandy takes her music.  She is truly a gem that Dayton better be ready for.  The whole concept, the performers, the location-RnR Playdate is a great start for anyone that wants to get started in their musical journey.  The crowd is very loyal, and will follow you wherever you go.

Kim Deal

Kim Deal

Our next stop is the South Park Tavern.  Every Wednesday night, the fantastic bar that offers some of the best pizza and beer in town also presents their open mic night.  This establishment is actually the birthplace of an idea.  On a chilled October night in 2011, a young man was sitting at one of the tables with some friends.  The group was sitting around catching up on what has been happening with one another. The young man has enjoyed the music that was being played in Dayton, and wanted to show his appreciation by starting a page people could go to and read about his adventures and his accounts of seeing the local shows.  He explained this vision to his friends, telling them that we would write reviews on the shows he attended, and hopefully meet some great people along the way.  That young man was me.  Over a year later, and continuing to move forward with Dayton Most Metro, I can’t begin to express my love to this open mic night.

Starting at 9, each act has 25 minutes to set up and perform.  At 11, the stage opens up for any upcoming rock band to come up and perform till the doors close.  The tavern on Wednesdays nights also offers up some acts that you would never think would happen.  Just a couple of weeks ago, an artist was penciled in to play.  The performer was labeled on the schedule as ‘K.D’.  What the people who were in attendance didn’t expect was that ‘K.D.’ was no other than The Breeders lead singer and bassist for the Pixies Kim Deal.  She performed a solo electric version of “Cannonball” but also another Breeders fan favorite “Fortunately Gone” from 1990’s Pod among others.

Travel over to the great Oregon District, and you will notice that some of the great establishments to run up and down the area also host fantastic open mic nights.  On Thursday nights, the Trolley Stop and Blind Bob’s each will give you the forum to come and sing your heart out.  Both venues also give you a great intimate crowd that will be looking forward to hearing good music played by you.

So, if you are ready to start embarking on a journey that you have been thinking of going on from some time, you always have to start somewhere.  If music is in your blood, and you want to become part of the great group of artists and musicians that call Dayton home, then go to one (or all) of the open mic nights the town offers you.  Maybe, just maybe, you will fulfill a lifelong dream of yours.  Or if you are like me-you will knock something off the bucket list.  Either way-have fun doing it.  If you don’t play any instruments, just sing only in the shower, or you just love seeing music, then go and support the people playing at the open mic nights.  Show them your appreciation.  Who knows-you just may see the next big star to come out of town…

‘Thank God It’s Thursday’ Weekly Event

June 20, 2012 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

(from left) Josh Egeland, Jason Weber and Jay Madewell onstage at One Eyed Jacks (photo by Todd the Fox)

Throughout the city of Dayton, and the cities around it, there are a vast number of bands and artists that take to the stage each and every night.  A lot of them have perfected their craft, whatever its rock, country, folk, etc.  It’s remarkable to go around town and see all the different styles that each band or artist perform to.   A couple of musicians from the Gem City have developed another concept that will make your Thursday nights a little more exciting.

Local DJs/musicians Jay Madewell and Josh Egeland are part of a duo called Dirty/Clean and on Thursday nights at One Eyed Jacks on Colonel Glenn Highway they host an event called ‘Thank God It’s Thursday’.   The concept of the duo is really out of the ordinary.  Egeland will spin retro tunes, while Madewell plays drums to the beat of the songs throughout the evening.  Other local musicians will come and play other instruments with the duo.  The end result is a stunning collaboration of great music that will no doubt leave people blown away.  It also will give people all the more reason to bring their dancing shoes, and dance the night away.

Josh Egeland of Dirty/Clean (Photo by Todd the Fox)

The show idea wasn’t thought up within a few minutes.  “I have been throwing around the idea for some time now.  I thought now would be a good time as any to set this idea into action,” Madewell told me before the inaugural show this past Thursday night.  “We hope that the event takes off and we can do shows on Friday and Saturday nights as well,”

The show is truly an experience that you have to see.  As Egeland supplied the crowd with classics from the days of disco and funk to Michael Jackson’s greatest hits, Madewell pounded away on the drums to the beat of the music.  Percussion was added to the mix on this evening from Jason Webber.  If the music didn’t keep people’s attention, the Gem City Rockers performed some Go Go Dancing, and also a light show just to the show’s unique style.

The crowd on the dance floor during Thank God It's Thursday (Photo by Todd the Fox)

As the night went on, the crowd at One Eyed Jacks grew larger and larger.  A large group of the patrons took to Dirty/Clean fun, groovy music playing beautifully.  People started displaying their best dance moves, while many others watched in amazement.  Some of the people that were in attendance at One Eyed Jacks mentioned to me that this was something that they didn’t think to imagine coming and seeing ever.  The concept was fresh and outside of the box, and they couldn’t wait to see the show evolve.   They also said that the bar was a perfect spot for the show to take place.  Madewell agreed.  “(One Eyed Jacks) is one of the best melting pots of music scenes I’ve seen in years in the Dayton area.”

With the event taking place each Thursday night, Madewell and Egeland have their sights set on making the show have themes to them. “I would love to do different shows.  Maybe a super hero theme one night.   Playing the Superman theme would be cool.”  With the way the first night went, the masses are up for anything.

‘Thank God Its Thursday’ takes place at One Eyed Jacks, which is located on 2638 Colonel Glenn Highway in Fairborn, right across from Wright State University.  The show is Thursdays 9pm-2am; 18 and up, and it’s free.

DJ Dragonfly’s “Mega-Mix” debut a Guiness Book of World Records Attemp

April 14, 2011 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

For Mark Browning, better know as DJ Dragonfly, releasing a CD isn’t enough of an event. So why not release 2 CD’s in one night.  And to add a little extra excitement to the night, he’ll  attempt to create a world record for the most tracks sampled in a 1 hour DJ set.  DJ DJ Dragonfly’s “Mega-Mix” incorporates 193 samples from a wide variety of genres blended into a unique concotion that everyone can enjoy.  According to Browning, “This mix is guaranteed to be unlike anything people have heard before, but its presentation is welcoming due to the familiarity of the tracks involved.”

The other cd being released is called “Seven Shades of Solace” and brings about a very different mood than the “Mega-Mix”.  This drum and bass collection features crisp, gnarly beats with some rap vocals and some female vocals.  The album speaks to the emotions of inner turmoil, struggle, and a chance to express “realness”.  Seven Shades of Solace is anything but lighthearted and will bring about quite an impact through its raw nature.

Both pieces are highly creative as well as thought and emotion provoking.  This event will be full of excitement and topped off with lots of local favorites.

The Double CD Release Party will be held  on Sat, April 16th starting at 9pm at One Eyed Jacks,  which is located at 2368 Col. Glenn Hwy in Fairborn. Drink specials that night will include $3.50 cherry bombs and $6 pitchers.
