Troy-Hayner Cultural Center

Hayner’s 2024 Road Trips

August 10, 2024 By Dayton937

The Troy-Hayner Cultural Center is pleased to announce the Hayner Hits the Road trips for 2024!  Adventure Begins Here.

Hayner Hits the Road will host a day trip to Indianapolis on Wednesday, September 12th featuring a tour of the James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home at 528 Lockerbie St.   One of the only preservations of a 19th-century residence in the entire country, this National Historic Landmark offers visitors a chance to step through the front door and back in time. Built in 1872, the Italianate style Home features original Victorian art and furnishings, as well as many artifacts that belonged to Riley. He became a national celebrity through his poetry about Indiana, nature, and childhood. He joined the lecture circuit and recited his poetry in major theaters across the country. He introduced the rest of America to what it meant to be from Indiana, earning him the nickname the “Hoosier Poet.” At the peak of his career in 1893, his friends, the Nickums and Holsteins, invited him to share their home at 528 Lockerbie St. He lived here for the next 23 years of his life until his death on July 22, 1916. Traveler’s will enjoy a lunch of German cuisine at The Rathskeller German Club.   Established in 1894, The Rathskeller is the city’s oldest restaurant still in operation today and is regularly voted the best German restaurant in Indy. Located in the basement of the Athenaeum, The Rathskeller is reminiscent of both a quaint inn tucked in the Bavarian hills and a lively beer hall in Munich.  The day will conclude with a visit to the Newfield’s Campus including the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Fairbanks Park, the Gardens, Lilly House & the Elder Greenhouse. Founded in 1883 as the Art Association of Indianapolis, the first permanent museum was opened in 1906 as part of the John Herron Art Institute. The name Newfields is a celebration of the IMA’s past and a commitment to its future. It is because of the Lilly family’s generous donation of the Oldfields estate 50 years ago, and generations of dedicated supporters, that the museum and campus has become the cultural institution we find there today. In 1969, the Art Association of Indianapolis changed its name to the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and in 1970 the museum moved to its current location.

Chicago will be the destination for a five-day/four-night trip on October 7th-11th.  Lodging will be at the historic Palmer House. The story of downtown Chicago’s Palmer House, a Hilton Hotel is one of romance and undeniable charm. Potter Palmer was a Chicago business magnate—well-known for various endeavors, including his significant role in the development of downtown Chicago’s iconic State Street. Bertha Honoré Palmer, 23 years Potter’s junior, was a wealthy socialite who also had a drive to learn and succeed. An introduction by Potter’s former business partner, Marshall Field, sparked a romance—and eventual engagement—between Potter and Bertha that led to perhaps one of the most extravagant wedding gifts of all time – Palmer House. It was a grand Chicago Hotel—one destined to take its place among the most luxurious hotels in Chicago and beyond. However, only 13 days after its grand opening, the Palmer House fell victim to the Great Chicago Fire. But that didn’t deter Potter. Determined to rebuild his hotel, Potter secured a $1.7 million loan–negotiated on his signature alone. On November 8, 1873, the new Palmer House welcomed its first guests, marking the opening of what would become the nation’s longest continually operating hotel. The trip will include breakfast at the Hotel each morning and dinner destinations including Morton’s Steak House, Topo Gigio in Olde Town, and Greektown, a touring Broadway Show, Navy Pier, Skydeck Observatory, Art Institute of Chicago, Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, Lincoln Park Conservatory, Water Tower Place, an Architectural Cruise and guided tour of Chicago.

The Hayner Hits the Road trips are all-inclusive including transportation, lodging, breakfasts & dinners, admission to all scheduled activities, and gratuities.

Please visit www.troyhayner.org for additional information, to register and to pay.   If you have questions, call David or Rachael at the Hayner, 937-339-0457. The Troy-Hayner Cultural Center is proudly supported by the citizens of the Troy City School District through a local tax levy and generous gifts to the Friends of Hayner. Troy-Hayner Cultural Center is located at 301 West Main Street, Troy, OH 45373. Hours of operation are Monday 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., Tuesday – Thursday 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., Friday & Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Sunday 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. The Hayner Center is closed on holidays.

Hayner Opens a New Season of Free Drawing Room Chamber Concerts

October 22, 2021 By Dayton937

The Drawing Room Chamber Series at the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center is a special opportunity to experience professional musicians and orchestral instruments in an intimate atmosphere. These concerts are usually composed of up to five musicians. One thing that is unique to chamber concerts is that the musicians are presenting music that that they have chosen themselves. This is not practical for a larger philharmonic where the pieces that are performed may have been chosen by committee agreement.

Musica

The chamber experience is intimate because the music that they perform are pieces that especially move them, pieces that they love to play. The musicians will have the time to talk about why they are playing the music that they chose. They will share bits of wisdom and history and help you to understand what the music means to them. Another thing unique to Hayner’s chamber concerts is that the audience is seated on the same level and in close proximity to the musicians. One tends to hear the instruments with the entire body and not just the ears. The Drawing Room Chamber Concert series is a rich and unique way to experience the same instruments that our young people are learning for band. The series is curated and hosted by Steven Aldredge of Wright State University. Steven is a gifted collaborative pianist as well as a soloist and published composer in his own right.

The 2021- 2022 Drawing Room Chamber Concert Series is on the last Tuesday night of most months in the school year at 7:30 pm. It opens this year on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at 7:30 pm with violinist with violinist Tom Sobieski. He will be performing some of his favorite macabre and spooky pieces as only the violin can play. He will be performing some of his favorite macabre and spooky pieces as only the violin can play.

Western Ohio Tuba Quartet

In November the Western Ohio Tuba Quartet will return to the Hayner to masterfully perform holiday favorites on four tubas. Their work is called “masterful” because of the skill of the four tubists. This concert is guaranteed not to overwhelm as one might think, although it might make you vibrate a little!

Amanda Roberts

Tuesday, January 25, 2022, will be a concert with Dayton’s volunteer chamber choir, Musica. Over 18 vocalists will light up the Hayner Ballroom. Flutist Christopher Chaffee will return to the series on Tuesday, February 22 and Amanda Roberts and friends will take the March 29 Drawing Room Chamber Concert. Closing the season on Tuesday, April 26 will be Steven’s own quartet Tutti Solisti. This final concert always brings surprises and special treats.

The Troy-Hayner Cultural Center is located at 301 West Main Street in Troy, Ohio. Most concerts, including the Drawing Room Chamber Concert Series are free to the public. Free reservations will be needed for the series due to limited seating. You may obtain your tickets at www.TroyHayner.org/music . Just navigate to the Drawing Room Chamber Concert page and select your favorite concert or phone the Hayner at 937-339-0457.

The Troy-Hayner Cultural Center Reopens!

June 18, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

The Troy-Hayner Cultural Center staff and Board of Directors has opened the doors to welcome the community home again. The staff has been busy behind the scenes finding ways to comply with state mandates while continuing to make opportunities for our guests to explore cultural experiences. Hours are shortened through the end of August but still open to the public Tuesday through Friday from nine o’clock a.m. to five p.m. Saturdays and Sundays the center is open from one o’clock to five p.m. Although there is a limit of 20 guests without reservations, during this period, as always, guests are welcome to drop in and take a tour of the center or enjoy the lovely front porch or courtyard. Please follow state reopen guidelines and practice social distancing and mask wearing. There is no entry fee to explore this beautiful cultural landmark.

The Hayner house will open with an new exhibit beginning Friday, June 26 called “Fibers Alive! Celebrating 40 years with the Upper Valley Fiber Guild.” This guild was established in 1980 to promote fiber arts such as spinning, weaving, knitting, quilting and crocheting. The artists will be Ohio-based crafts-folk. Leona Sargent, the Exhibit Coordinator says there are some notable Troy artists in the group. “There are two Trojans among these 8 outstanding artists. Look for Lorraine Reibert’s weavings and Steve Lawrence’s knitted pieces.”  A display of historic and antique tools such as pin looms and knitting needles will also be on display. Enjoy “Fiber Arts” through August 16, 2020. There is never a fee to visit the exhibits.

The Hayner hopes to receive the go-ahead from the state and county health departments to present the annual Lucky Lemonade courtyard concert series. There are four free Tuesdays in July planned. The first concert will be a prerecorded concert with The Barnhart Band. It is to be released on Tuesday, July 7 at 7:30 pm on the Hayner website at TroyHayner.org/music and their facebook page at facebook.com/HaynerCenter. The Barnhart Band is a folk/rock Miami Valley trio featuring harmonica, dobro and stand-up bass.

The Fairview Stringers

Three of the four Lucky Lemonade Concerts will be live and will require free reservations. They are July 14 with The Fairview Stringers, July 21 with Jimmy Felts and July 28 with The Nautical Theme. All are free concerts and will close with some refreshing home-made recipe lemonade. Visit the Hayner music page for reservations. Seating will be arranged in pairs and will observe social distancing. Masks will be requested to protect our staff and guests during this exceptional viral epidemic period.

The Fridays On Prouty concert series is also ready-to-go. This is a free, downtown outdoor Friday-night-on-the-square community concert series presented by the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center and Troy Main Street. There are four concerts planned on select Fridays in July and August. The first concert is a sister duo called Adelee and Gentry. They bring their own brand of pop with unique, uplifting vocal harmonies. This concert is planned for July 10 at 7:30 pm. Bring your lawn chairs and join your neighbors. The July 24th concert is scheduled with Cincinnati Transit Authority and is a tribute to the great band, Chicago. July 31 is everybody’s best friends, The Fries Band, with 60s, 70s and 80s covers.

MojoFlo

MojoFlo is an exciting 6-piece “party band” with some great-big-fun danceable favorites. Please watch our website for the latest updates about these exciting outdoor events at www.TroyHayner.org/music. As Terrilynn Meece, the music manager at the Hayner says, “It has been a crazy year, anything can happen so let’s keep planning the good stuff!”

These programs are offered free to the public because of the support of its proud citizens. It is funded through a local tax levy of the Troy City School District and many generous gifts to the Friends of Hayner. For more information regarding these free events and to receive a complete listing of events taking place at the Hayner Center, please call 339-0457 or visit our website at www.TroyHayner.org for complete details.

Vanessa Rubin Performs Free Jazz Concert

March 21, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

Revered as both a torchbearer and a storyteller, jazz vocalist Vanessa Rubin possesses a voice hailed for crystalline clarity, warmth and sass. The Cleveland native brings a wealth of diverse influences to her vocal performance from both the Trinidadian/Caribbean roots of her mother and traditional jazz by way of her Louisiana-born father.

At 7pm on Saturday, March 24th  a short interview will be conducted by Fenton Sparks to help you get to know Vanessa a bit better. The free concert will start at 7:30 pm.

Her career began as a young woman in 1980 singing in small clubs in Cleveland, Ohio performing with musicians such as Wynn Bibbs, Skip Gibson, saxophonist and arranger Willie Smith, Neal Creque, Matthew “Chink” Stevenson.  It did not take her long to make the big trip to New York where she joined up with other jazz musicians like Pharaoh Sanders, Frank Foster and Cecil Bridgewater and Barry Harris. Her first recording contract was with Novus/RCA Records making five albums in three years. “Full Circle” (Creative Perspective Music – 2013) is her most recent recording and is a joint project with saxophonist Don Braden, both of whom are from the Midwest and share a deep appreciation for the Hammond B3.

Vanessa will be performing with an Ohio based trio: Dreve Ivy on piano, Peter Dominguez on bass and Reggie Jackson will to return to the Hayner on drums. In Vanessa’s own words: “I will say they are all fine musicians and wonderful human beings.  Drene is a Cleveland native, an accomplished pianist, accompanist, music instructor and Minister of Music at his place of worship. Peter is the Bass Chair at Oberlin College and is one of the best kept secrets on acoustic bass in the country.  After 30 years in NY and playing with only the best, I am delighted to discover him right here under my nose in Ohio. Reggie, from Columbus, is no stranger to the center as he has played there previously with Bobby Floyd, whom he plays with regularly and has toured extensively with Grammy Winner Dianne Sure.

The Troy-Hayner Cultural Center is proudly supported by the citizens of the Troy City School District through a local tax levy and generous gifts to the Friends of Hayner. For more information regarding these free events and to receive a complete listing of events taking place at the Hayner Center, please call 339-0457 or visit our website at www.TroyHayner.org for complete details
