The Pumpkin Glow is Back – Sign Up Now To Volunteer!

The Stoddard Avenue Pumpkin Glow will be back in Grafton Hill on October 25 & 26, 2021 from 6-10pm each night!  For many years Judy Chaffin chaired the glow on the hill behind the Greek Orothodox Church until she got sick and could no longer do it.  In 2017 the Grafton Hill Historic District took charge of the event that Daytonians had come to love .  Judy Chaffin, the Pumpkin Lady passed away in December of 2018, but with lots of volunteer help the Pumpkin glow continues.

Organizer  John Edinger says, “we are so excited to bring back the Glow this year! Volunteering with your friends, family or coworkers is almost more fun than the actual event—come on out and carve one or twenty! Looking forward to seeing everyone on the Hill!”
It takes a lot of volunteers to put on this exciting FREE event for the community and they need your help!  Volunteers will be gutting, tracing, and carving from October 21-24. This activity is fun for all ages. Come for an hour or stay the whole day. Bring your friends, family, coworkers, and appetite–food will be available for volunteers throughout the day!

Tornado Relief Update Thursday June 13- Volunteer/Donation Needs

CLC – LOVEDAYTON 2.0

PROJECT 1

Thursday, June 13, from 2pm – 4pm

10-15 volunteers needed move supplies from the CLC South trailer which will be parked at PIPPINS MARKET on 5440 Olive Road in Trotwood. After this work is done volunteers are asked to cross Olive Road and go to Gateway Cathedral Church, 5501 Olive Road and place debris from around the perimeter of the building into an industrial dumpster located at the site. Meet at Pippins Market at 5440 Olive Road in Trotwood.

PROJECT 2

Friday June 14, from 8am – Noon

Meet at Student Life Center at 8am sharp. We need 5-7 volunteers to assemble painting materials (brushes , stirrers, drop clothes, scrapers, rollers/pans etc.) from the CLC LoveDayton storage barn located off the driveway, load up the CLC vans and deliver paint and supplies to approximately 12 sites around the Dayton. Carpooling may be necessary.

MEET AT SMITH MIDDLE SCHOOL (parking lot closest to Little York Road)

Saturday , June 15, from 9am – 1pm

We need around 75 volunteers to cut trees with chainsaws and remove debris. At least one member of the group needs to have a pickup truck to haul. Supplies will be provided (gloves, saws, rakes , shovels, fuel, water and some snacks ) along with directions to approximately 12 sites. Please carpool! Only experienced people will be allowed to use a chainsaw! MEET AT SMITH MIDDLE SCHOOL (parking lot closest to Little York Road)

Northridge Area Food Bank

Northridge area foodbank is in desperate need of volunteers as those who have been on site daily need a break. Help is needed sorting and distributing food M-F 12pm – 6pm. It is not required to stay all day, work however many hours you can.

Dayton Inspire NEEDS Toys

A Dayton organization needs toy donations for children affected by the Memorial Day tornadoes. Dayton Inspires, a grass roots community alliance, will deliver toys, popsicles and ice cream on Monday, June 17 to shelters housing families displaced by the violent weather.

Toy donations can be delivered to these locations:

Hopeland Church, 6025 Miller Lane, Monday – Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Catapult Creative, in the lobby at 10 N. Ludlow, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Heart Mercantile, 438 E. Fifth St., Monday – Sunday from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. Toys can be dropped off in the alley behind the building.

American Legion hall, 27 S. Meadow Drive, Trotwood, 3-5 p.m. June 13. There will be a cookout as well. Toys can be dropped off anytime before then.

Hopeland Church at Stop 8 and Miller Lane is in need of backpacks canned goods cleaning supplies, feminine and hygiene products along with laundry detergent. They are also looking for ongoing help with sorting and distribution of donations.

Volunteers are the life of The Foodbank! If you are flexible, and can volunteer Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, we would love to have you! Corporate and school groups are always welcome, as well.

How You Can Help – Tues, June 5th Update

Because of the huge outpouring of volunteer efforts from churches and organizations all over the city, state, and nation, the “big” volunteer projects are more difficult to schedule from day-to-day. More and more projects are now in need (and are being managed) by contractors, utility companies, and other professional agencies.

I am working today with several of those agencies to gather up volunteer opportunities in the upcoming days. Updates will be sent as those come in.

We are also actively working to get supplies to individuals who do not have transportation to get them. If you are available to help with this, please let me know. Opportunity will entail driving to donation center to get supplies then to individual in need to drop off.

Donations for tornado relief can dropped at St. Vincent de Paul Community Store, 120 W. Apple St. in Dayton 24-hours a day.

Northwest Recreation Center, 1600 Princeton Dr.,  Greater Dayton Recreation Center, 2021 W Third St. and Lohrey Recreation Center, 2366 Glenarm Ave.  Hours for the centers are Monday-Friday, 6 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Donations of skids or larger should be made at the Expo Center, Dayton Airport, 3900 McCauley Drive, Vandalia from 7 a.m. – 2 p.m.

— Fill the Truck – Again will have a semi-trailer at the Royal Crest Building 29 W. Main Tipp City from 9am-5pm then from 5pm-8:30pm donation drop off’s will be at Tipp city public library. Donations will be collected through June  7th.  Items that are needed: Bottled water, Hygiene products, Cleaning supplies and gloves and anything else someone would need. The Puerto Rican American and Caribbean Organization of Dayton is accepting donations for Dayton tornado victims Saturday June 8, 15 and 22 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Dayton International School Spanish Immersion Academy at 5700 Far Hills Avenue. The organization is not accepting clothing, food or water, but is accepting personal care items, cleaning supplies, paper products, first aid items, batteries, candles, diapers, latex and work gloves, masks, shovels, flashlights, etc. Gift cards are accepted and preferred.

— The Miami Valley Veterans Museum and the Franklin Masonic Lodge of Troy are running a joint donation drop off Wednesday, June 5 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at their location at 107 W. Main St. Items needed include water, toiletries, baby supplies, dog food, work gloves, hygiene supplies, safety glasses, bandages, trash bags, tarps, flashlights with batteries, bug spray, contact lens solution, buckets and sunscreen. Items should be dropped off on the ground floor. Contact Bruce Ball of Troy on Facebook if you need to donate after that time to arrange a drop off.

Cedar Hill Furniture is accepting donations during regular business hours at its Huber Heights, Kettering and Springfield locations.

The store is asking for donated water, canned food, baby formula, diapers, wipes, personal hygiene products, new underwear, trash bags, batteries and socks.

Cedar Hill Furniture is open from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Other Opportunities

Montgomery County is seeking volunteers. Licensed professionals in skilled trades, medical and veterinary fields, as well as individuals and companies that own and operate equipment — everything from chainsaws to heavy equipment — are needed. Volunteers will be matched to organizations with specific volunteer needs. Volunteers need their photo ID, and can register at Sinclair Community College, Building 20. You can register seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Ginghamsburg Methodist Church’s Tipp City campus is organizing its June 8 and June 22 service days around assisting those harmed by the storms and tornadoes, Nathan Combs, the church’s executive director of operations, said.

Safe house studios is looking for volunteers to help out with handing out donations they received and getting supplies to those in need with out means of transportation. They will be meeting at Pippins Market at 5440 Olive Road, Trotwood. They are also still accepting donations of food, water, or anything that someone would need.

The Community Blood Center has a critical need for type O positive blood, Mark Pompilio, a spokesman for the center, said. Officials ask that people with O type blood to donate blood at the Dayton Community Blood Center, 349 South Main St.

CLC Dayton – LoveDayton Initiative Saturday June 8th starting at 9am at their Little York Campus will focus on disaster relief projects throughout the day. Volunteers can register at clcdayton.com 

Samaritan’s Purse Day Volunteers: If you are local to the area we welcome you to serve for the day. Please arrive at our host location: Living Word Church, 926 E National Rd, Vandalia, OH 45377 at 7:30 am or 12:30 pm for orientation. Volunteers will work Mondays – Saturdays, beginning Wednesday, May 28 at 12:30 pm. Please bring a bagged lunch and water with you. If you have questions about serving as a day volunteer please contact the site at 937-414-1152.

On Saturday, June 8th at 9:00am, the community of Union, Indiana will deliver a semi truck load of donated food items to support the Vandalia Butler Food Pantry and those affected by the recent Memorial Day Storms. The volunteers that manage the Food Pantry are in need of multiple persons to assist in unloading the product and place it into a locker donated by Vandalia Store & Lock; 2750 West National Road.Volunteers are encouraged to contact Kathy Garver at (937) 307 – 4728

Donations may be dropped off at Bob Ross Buick GMC or Mercedes-Benz of Centerville. Employees will then distribute donations to The American Red Cross, United Way of Greater Dayton and the Foodbank.

Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum is located at 118 Woodland Avenue off of Brown Street near the UD campus. All tours start at the front gates on Woodland Avenue.

Volunteers Needed! 

Woodland is seeking volunteers to lead tours and present programs to the public. If you like history and enjoy walking through the cemetery call us now for immediate training. Not interested in leading a tour, we have other positions as well: historical research and helping to plan out new tours, assisting with special events, public speaking engagements, researching family histories, sewing costumes for special events, researching and tagging trees and plants in the arboretum, office work, etc.

Woodland Cemetery, founded in 1841, is one of the nation’s five oldest rural garden cemeteries and a unique cultural, botanical and educational resource in the heart of Dayton, Ohio as you will see as you read through this new MostMetro.com series. Visit the cemetery and arboretum and take one of the many tours Woodland offers free of charge. Most of Dayton’s aviation heroes, inventors and business barons are buried at Woodland.

In the Miami Valley there are hundreds of events that thrive with the help of volunteers.  So we’ve launched a Facebook Volunteer Group that is set up to bring volunteers and events/organizations that need the help together!  Joining the group will just allow you to find out about opportunities all over town, but does not obligate you to anything, so go ahead, join our group!

Five Rivers MetroParks Introduces Their New Recreation Volunteer Coordinator

Five Rivers MetroParks 2Congratulations to Emmy Fabich, FRMP’s new Volunteer Coordinator of Outdoor Recreation and Events! Emmy’s position will support our MetroParks Volunteer Patrols (MVPs), recreational programs and riding center volunteers, as well as outdoor recreation and RiverScape events volunteers. She will coordinate volunteer support for trail building activities at MoMBA, too.

Some of you may already know Emmy as she has been with MetroParks for the past four years, previously serving as the Recreation Program Specialist in the Outdoor Connections Department. She has led overnight backpacking programs on the TVT, taught rescues and paddling strokes in kayaking programs at Eastwood, worked on bicycles during bike maintenance classes, and initiated the popular Try Slacklining programs, being a slacker herself.

Q: What makes you excited about being a Volunteer Coordinator?

A: “Having been at MetroParks for awhile, I am excited to take on new challenges in this role and look forward to interacting more regularly with volunteers. I think it is important to have a strong volunteer pool to support our great outdoor recreation opportunities so I’m enthusiastic about growing our numbers, as our programs and events get bigger and better. I’m also very excited about seeing more trail-building volunteers out at MoMBA now that I’ll be the contact for workdays. There is no way we could pull off the events or build the facilities we have without our volunteers. I look forward to hearing from more of you and getting you engaged!”

Q: When not recruiting volunteers for programs or events, where can we find you?

A: “In my spare time, I love to do the activities that parallel my previous position and my current one. You can find me outside any time of year, slacklining on some trees, commuting to work by bicycle, tearing-up single track at MoMBA or perfecting my kayak roll. When not recreating, I volunteer regularly with the local young professionals group – UpDayton, leading projects to attract and retain talent in downtown Dayton, something that is very important to me as a downtown resident. And I love to get my hands dirty building houses for Habitat for Humanity or wrenching on one of my three bicycles. I also love to cook!”

In preparation for Bike to Work Day Pancake Breakfast, volunteers are needed to send out a little trail magic. Stations are meant to bring awareness of bicycle commuting to recreational riders and families.

Party Planners Habitat Needs You!

Dayton Habitat is recruiting skilled volunteers to help plan and organize our 2011 Spring Gala “Dancing With Our Stars”.  A variety of committee members are needed to serve on the silent auction, public relations/media, decorations, and sponsorship committees. If you are interested in donating your time and talents, please contact Jen by email at [email protected] or by phone at 937.586.0860 ext. 16.

Habitat for Humanity serves as a hand up, not a handout, for families in need. Families apply to us to earn a house of their own. Once accepted into the program, our “Partner Families” work alongside our many volunteers to build their house. They put in 275 to 550 hours of “sweat equity” before earning their home, which is then sold to them on an affordable, interest-free mortgage. Partner families make a down payment toward the purchase of their home.

Mortgage payments from Partner Families are put back into the Fund for Humanity to build future homes. Other funding sources include revenue from our ReStore, corporate and church sponsorships, individual donations, government and foundation grants, and fundraising events.
