Helping Tornado Victims For The Holidays

December 5, 2019 By Shana Lloyd

I have had several people reaching out about holiday assistance for families impacted by the tornadoes, love your hearts . Here are some opportunities:

? Christmas Trees and Gifts with Basore Grace Brethren Church
Basore Grace Brethren Church
5675 Basore Rd
Dayton, OH 45415
(Trotwood area by old Hara Arena)

Drop off at church:
Thursday, December 5th, 10am-3pm

The primary focus is to bless affected families with Christmas trees! Gift cards, blankets or other small and other small gifts are welcome as well. Families will be invited to come pick these items up at the church on Saturday, December 7th from 9:30am – 2:00pm, and they welcome other volunteers to come help and meet the families!

Or if that time doesn’t work, contact Heather Kirkland at 937-545-5955 and you can drop off at her house in Trotwood. Feel free to contact Heather with any questions! Please do not share her personal cell number on social media, thank you!

? The Gift of Warmth with Crayons to Classrooms
Crayons to classrooms is working to collect 10,000 pairs of hats, kids socks and gloves for students in affected school districts. These can be delivered to their office (1750 Woodman Drive, Dayton) any day Monday – Friday between 8:30am – 5pm until December 31st.

? Gift Cards with Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley
Though Catholic Social Services is not doing a giving tree program this year, they are still in contact with families affected by the tornadoes and are running short on gift cards for things like Walmart, Speedway, Kroger or RTA bus passes.

The address where these donations can be made is 922 W. Riverview from 8:30 to 5, Mon.-Friday. Donations should be left at the front desk at the main entrance on the Riverside of the building (not our pantry entrance).

? Shiloh Church continues to work with near 50 families who have been impacted. For sponsoring a family or making a financial donation, please call or text Sarah Moore at 941-586-1702 with questions.

? Harrison Township continues to serve families in the area. For more information on how you can help, contact Cathi Spaugy

Tornado Relief Update- June 20th – Volunteer/Donation Needs

June 20, 2019 By Shana Lloyd

It’s been just over 3 weeks since the tornados changed life as we know it for so many Miami Valley residents.  Each week the needs are changing and ultimately the biggest need is for funding to help those displaced from their homes, repair or replace their vehicles so they can get to work, for those that still have jobs.  Many people still aren’t sure what the future holds, meeting with insurance agents and filing claims with FEMA.  What we do know is there is much to do and many ways you can help.  We’ll keep updating this twice a week.  Thanks for caring.  #DaytonStrong

Shamrock Shakes & Other March Treats We Can’t Live Without! (Made Over)

March 10, 2018 By Shana Lloyd

March sure rolled in quick this year! Most of us are ready for Spring and seasonal sweet treats remind is it’s finally on the way! Okay so the Shamrock Shakes actually arrived in February but I’ve been trying to ignore that fact because the mere idea of them adds a few inches to my waistline. With more than 6o million served yearly, those tasty shakes draw more buzz than the McRib – that’s whole other article. At close to 400 calories, 14 grams of fat, 63 of the carbs I try to avoid and 11 grams of protein I wondered if there were a healthier makeover option for the Shamrock Shake. Watching my macros, not eating anything with preservatives and staying away from dairy has made life a little sad at times especially when a favorite like this rolls into town. But don’t fret, there’s hope! I dug up some yummy lighter alternatives.

It’s green. It’s minty. And it’s back for a limited time in select locations. Download the Shamrock Finder app for iOS and Android to find a #ShamrockShake near you. ☘?☘

A post shared by McDonald’s (@mcdonalds) on Feb 21, 2018 at 10:08am PST

Clean & Green Shamrock Shake – Recipe from Hungry Girl

Ingredients

3/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk

1 oz. (about 6 tbsp.) vanilla protein powder with about 100 calories per serving

1/3 cup spinach leaves

1/8 tsp. peppermint extract

1 1/4 cups crushed ice or 6 – 10 ice cubes

Directions

Place all ingredients in a blender. Blend at high speed until smooth, stopping and stirring if needed.

Or this version from Cooking Light Magazine!

Or just have the damn thing and hit the treadmill after, whatever works for you!

Another March favorite……Girl Scout Cookies! But I’m partial to Samoas & big surprise Thin Mints. Who isn’t? Not gonna lie, there a few boxes of each in my kitchen right now. I tried to justify the purchase as a way of supporting future female leaders and entrepreneurs which is partly it, but really, COOKIES. Anyway I did happen to dig up a few make over recipes for those too.

Best Low Carb Thin Mints (Gluten Free!) – Recipe by AllDayIDreamAboutFood.com

Ingredients

Cookies

  • 1 3/4 cups almond flour
  • 1/3 cup cocao powder
  • 1/4 cup Swerve Sweetener
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg, slightly beaten
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp liquid stevia extract OR another 1/4 cup Swerve Sweetener

Coating

  • 1 tbsp butter or coconut oil, or 1/2 ounce cocoa butter* (see cook’s notes)
  • 7 oz sugar-free dark chocolate such as Lily’s OR 90% Lindt chocolate, chopped
  • 1 tsp peppermint extract

How to Make Them

Low Carb Samoa Recipe by Your Lighter Side

And if you’re feeling really ambitious, here’s 9 other Girl Scout Cookie makeover recipes you may love!

Making healthier choices has been a huge adjustment in my life, but the more I research and try new things the closer I get to feeling like making those choices doesn’t have to be such a burden. There is a lot of trial and error and there are days where I just throw in the towel and eat whatever I want. You have to have those moments I think but I always come back to how I feel when I am eating cleaner – and no cookie beats that!

Enjoy these makeovers. More coming soon + summer Grilling season is just around the corner.

Stay happy & healthy!

10 Health(ish) Snacks for Your Super Bowl Party!

February 2, 2018 By Shana Lloyd

I know nothing about football, or the Super Bowl but snacks? Well, I know a great deal about those. I recently asked my Happy Platers group what snacks they love to munch on at parties to help find healthier options. It seems as though anything you can dip a chip into and those tasty little meatballs are a hit. So I scoured the internet and my favorite health blogs for some options to keep the menu light but tasty. These ideas and recipes will you help you avoid munching away mindlessly and having regrets on Monday! (aside from being it Monday)

10 Super Snacks Made Healthier

Glazed Cocktail Meatballs – RECIPE

By skipping high sodium ingredients like ketchup and chili sauce and swapping bread crumbs with whole grain bulgur this recipe stills packs taste without bloat.

Cauliflower Pizza Bites – RECIPE

Because who the heck doesn’t love a pizza muffin? The two words together are just magical. This is one recipe I can’t wait to make. Just like your regular pizza, you can alter the ingredients the match toppings you typically love!

No Bake Brownies – RECIPE

FACT. If it’s made with ganache, I will NOSH. The Minimalist Baker is one of my favorite blogs changing the way I view dessert and how many options I really have, despite making so many dietary changes! After anything salty, I need something sweet. And what’s a party without brownies anyway? This recipe has FIVE ingredients and is super easy to make!  Walnuts, Almonds, Dates, Cacao (or cocoa) Powder + Nibs, Sea Salt

Really, that’s it!

Here’s 5 UH-MAZING DIPS that well won’t stop that scale from dipping.

Goat Cheese Queso Dip With Vegetable Chips

Blue Cheese Bacon Dip

Healthier 7 Layer Dip

Guilt Free Artichoke & Kale Dip

Skinny Buffalo Chicken Dip

Moving along to a fan favorite, CHICKEN WINGS!

Try this sweet but SAVORY recipe from Domestic Fit for Baked

Brown Sugar Chicken Wings.

And last, but certainly not least – potato skins. Only this recipe uses sweet potatoes and lighter ingredients!

OTHER HELPFUL TIPS

Let’s face it, sometimes we just want to use the recipe we always have and that’s fine too. Be mindful of high sodium and when an option, choose low salt ingredients. When it comes to sour cream – you can swap with Greek Yogurt to make it light. If you’re going to have chips – choose baked but an even better option for your dips is veggies! And last but not least – always remember one golden rule – everything in moderation. If your Super Bowl Party is your one cheat day, have the snack you want but watch your portions and drink lots of water 😉

Have a happy healthy weekend and I hope whatever team you’re cheering for wins!

That’s all for now.

Dunkin Donuts Makes Changes But Is It Enough?

January 19, 2018 By Shana Lloyd

The first half of 2017 was spent chomping down my favorite, my one ultimate weakness DUNKIN DONUTS. Growing up on the east coast, Dunkies was a huge part of my life and over the years my feelings of love have been quite evident when it came to those tasty donuts. I would joke about how they knew my order at the drive thru and having a dozen or so present when I met with clients was the standard. Donuts were a big part of my life. Dunkin that is. They are something I never thought I would give up. As much as I enjoyed burying my face in them the after effects were not good. Since really diving into food and how everything I eat makes me feel, like many other things – I had to wonder, what’s in those donuts? And like many things theses days, the nutrition information is somewhat of a Magna Carta of bad stuff. But is there hope?

DUNKIN MAKES CHANGES

Like many in the food industry, Dunkin is making changes. News last year about cutting its menu and potentially changing its name was only the beginning.  In a recent announcement,  Dunkin announcement it’s commitment to “cleaner” menus in 2018. By the end of this year, they play to remove artificial dyes across their menu, including donut icings, fillings and toppings, as well as frozen beverages such as COOLATTA® frozen beverages, baked goods, breakfast sandwiches and coffee flavorings.

In August 2017, Dunkin Donuts announces it’s cutting half the menu, toying with the idea of removing “Donuts” from the brand name.

WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER STUFF?

So they’re removing artificial dyes, does that mean the donuts are healthier? I remained curious and did some digging because aside from me loving and craving their donuts often, I had absolutely no idea what was in them.

“Despite Dunkin’s recent decision to eliminate artificial dyes from their menu by the end of 2018, a simple glazed doughnut still contains over 30 ingredients.” – Cooking Light Magazine

30 INGREDIENTS!!!!

I looked into it and none of it made sense, but a recent article in Cooking Light Magazine shed some light on not only the mighty 30 that make up a glazed donuts.

From Cooking Light Magazine

1.) Enriched Unbleached Wheat Flour (including wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, iron as ferrous sulfate, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, and folic acid)
“Wheat flour” simply means wheat that has been milled (meaning the hard shell, or bran, and germ have been rubbed off) and ground into flour. Unfortunately a lot of the healthy nutrients are in the bran and germ (which is why unmilled, or “whole” wheat is better for you). So this flour has been “enriched” with those other ingredients—a mix of B vitamins and iron. While it’s better for you than unenriched flour would be, as you might imagine, it’s not quite the same.

Sometimes flour is bleached, so it looks nice and clean and white. But that’s less necessary if you’re adding in colors and other additives, so in this case, they’re specifying that the flour is “unbleached.”

 2.) Palm Oil

A type of vegetable oil, palm oil has been controversial for the harmful environmental effects that come with farming and making it, as well as its effects on human health. The World Wildlife Fund reports that palm oil production results in the devastation of large forests and natural habitats in Indonesia and Malaysia. Additionally, palm oil is higher in saturated fats than other oils, making it less heart-healthy.

Dunkin’ Donuts has said they now use 100% sustainable palm oil, though this does not address its poor nutritional value. However, since the FDA’s announcement to phase out trans fats by 2018, palm oil has become an increasingly popular replacement for in processed foods.

3.) Dextrose
This is a common sweetener found in baked goods. Dextrose is a simple sugar derived from corn. In other words, it’s added sugar.

4.) Soybean Oil
Soybean oil is another type of vegetable oil and a common fixture on the ingredient lists of a variety of food products from salad dressing to baked goods to snack crackers.

Why? Soybeans are easy and inexpensive to grow. In fact, they’re the second most-planted crop in the United States. Whether soybean oil, soy flour, or soy letchin, all of these ingredients are derived from the versatile soybean.

5.) Whey
Remember little miss Muffett eating her curds and whey? Whey (like curds) is a byproduct of cheesemaking. It looks like a thin, watery milk, and is basically a milk protein.  Whey contains lactose, so those with dairy allergies should avoid foods with this ingredient.

There are 2% or less of these:

6.) Leavening (Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Baking Soda)
Sodium acid pyrophosphate, which is sometimes called disodium  pyrophosphate, is a dry powder acid. It reacts with the baking soda (which is a base) to make a chemical-based  leavener—it’s basically what baking powder does. This helps baked goods rise while also lending a light and airy texture.

7.) Defatted Soy Flour
Made from ground soybeans, this protein-rich flour can enhance the flavor, texture, moisture, and color of baked goods. “Defatted” simply means the soybean’s natural oils have been removed during processing to minimize fat.

8.) Wheat Starch
Like corn starch, wheat starch is used to thicken and stabilize foods.

9.) Mono and Diglycerides, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Cellulose Gum, Soy Lecithin
All of these are considered emulsifiers that help bind ingredients together. In baked goods, they can give doughs a smooth and uniform texture.

10.) Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum
Both of these are thickeners also used to enhance the texture of baked goods.

11.) Artificial Flavor
Unlike natural flavors, which are derived from plants, artificial flavors are chemical mixtures. They are often manufactured to mimic the characteristics of natural flavors, but at a lower cost.

12.) Sodium Caseinate (a milk derivative)
A milk protein that acts as a thickener in foods, sodium caseinate may be in foods labeled as non-dairy. Because it contains small amounts of lactose, the FDA warns that those with milk allergies should avoid foods with this ingredient.

13.) Enzyme
An additive that extends shelf life of baked goods.

14.) Colored with (Turmeric and Annatto Extracts, Beta Carotene)
Turmeric, Annatto, and Beta Carotene are natural food dyes derived from fruits and vegetables.

Other ingredients include water, skim milk, yeast, salt, and eggs as I’m sure you expected.

If you’ve made it this far, you probably feel as I do which is maybe it’s better to make them myself if I get a the temptation and if you don’t feel that way, that’s fine too. I love Dunkies, but this may get me kicked out of their loyalty program. Moreso than ever I’m recognizing that when cravings come, it’s best I look for the next best alternative,  skip the preservatives, make it myself or take a trip to one of my favorite local donut shop….and in Dayton we’ve got quite a few! Here’s options for both!

5 Downtown Restaurants & The Dishes That Won’t Ruin Your Resolution

January 5, 2018 By Shana Lloyd

Why I even included the word resolution in the title is beyond me because if there is anything I hate more than the resolutions themselves, its hearing that word from January to February. Am I right? However, it doesn’t change the fact that I am on a wellness journey. Despite my goals and nutrition plan however, there is nothing I love more than a night out at one of my favorite restaurants. When I started this journey I couldn’t bare the idea of not eating out again, I mean that’s like medieval torture. Okay not really, but I mean I love to eat out and downtown Dayton has no shortage of flavor when it comes to do so!

Instead of avoiding those invites out, I decided to start researching menus and see what I can enjoy because my eating habits went from Paula Dean to Ellie Krieger, no offense to Paula – I still love butter, I’m just at an age where my heart valves don’t.

Things I try to avoid are sauces that mention “cream”, anything fried or crispy and a majority of the time red meat and some dairy but every once in while a girl needs beef and cheese.

So here it goes, these are my favorite restaurants and the items I would choose.

5 Downtown Restaurants & The Dishes That Won’t Ruin Your Resolution

CORNER KITCHEN (My favorite place to nosh!)

Small Plates

  • Brussel Sprouts
  • Fish Tacos
  • Pan Seared Salmon (I will often order as my meal!)

Salads

  • House Salad
  • Quinoa Pita Salad

(add chicken, salmon or tofu to make it your meal!)

Dinners

  • Acorn Squash Wedge
  • Grilled Swordfish
  • Mussels & Fries (maybe not the fries if can fight it)

You’ll notice I didn’t include any desserts and its only because I can’t stop when it comes to anything with sugar. However, a progressive approach would be to just go out for dessert and that’s definitely on my list to do this year! Another fun night out, pick a dish from each place and hit them all!

Happy New Year to all of you, and try to remember that living doesn’t stop because you’ve decided to make changes to your diet. There’s plenty of options to fulfill those desires for flavor! Also all of these restaurants always have amazing local fare specials and they’ll tell you all about them. Make the best choice for you.

Now go make reservations, not resolutions 🙂

Join me in my Facebook Group to see more flavor discoveries, meal makeovers and more!

Be well.
