THE BACK STORY: Eloise (New Zealand actress Thomasin McKenzie) – “Ellie” if you will – is a country girl with a simple dream: Move to the big city (in this case, London) and live out her dream of becoming a big time fashion designer. Her grandmother Peggy (Rita Tushingham), however, is very concerned for her well being, especially given what happened to Eloise’s mother (Amieé Cassettari) when she tried to do the same.
Arriving in London, Eloise quickly realizes things are a bit different in the big city. Her assigned roommate Jocasta (Synnøve Karlsen) is every bit the party girl she is not, making her seek refuge in the available space owned by Ms. Collins (the late Dame Diana Rigg). Much more suitable to her needs, Ms. Collins’ space is a perfect place for Eloise to enjoy her love of all things 1960s, from fashion to music.
The new space, however, comes with an unexpected surprise. For whenever Eloise – who has been having visions of her late mother back home – goes to sleep, she begins having visions of 1960s England and particularly of Sandie (Ana Taylor-Joy), a cabaret singer with impeccable fashion and style for days. She also sees visions of Jack (Matt Smith)a debonair playboy who seems like the perfect manager to Sandie.
But wouldn’t you just know it? Seems like the deeper into the world of 1960s London Eloise’s dreams take her, the deeper the glamour of the world unravels – especially since she starts having visions of shadowy figures and Sandie’s descent into madness. And as Sandie’s world starts to unravel in Eloise’s dreams, so does Eloise’s reality …
All that glitters may not be gold indeed; in this case, it could be fatal.

 

THE REVIEW: Last Night in Soho is not a gory, traditional hack and slash horror movie like the latest Halloween debacle. (If we’re friends on Facebook or have ever seen me do stand-up, you already know how I feel about the latest installment of that franchise.) What it is, though, is a very finely crafted psychological thriller that, in the wake of Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby and so many others, feels timely while also being stylish, intelligent and – at times – a little scary to boot.
McKenzie and Taylor-Joy shine as mirror images of each other. Separated by decades character-wise, each actress plays opposite the other well to make the film’s multi-dimensional existence work at every critical turn. Without their careful attention to detail, you wouldn’t feel any of the emotions that both ladies expertly convey to move the story forward, which is masterfully executed under the watchful eye of co-writer/director Edgar Wright.
Instead of a predictable story or one that is out to make a statement, you get a fine homage to 1960s without any Austin Powers hokeyness while also delving into the seedy underbelly of life in the big city. Nothing is rushed, everything is paced out as it should be and despite some secondary characters that could probably use a little more screen time and the story lacks predictable elements. Add in a soundtrack that enhances the story – each song selection is perfectly matched for both the era and the part of the story being told – as a character itself and everything simply works and works well.
In short, if you are looking for an entertaining thriller this Halloween, perhaps you should skip the more traditional fare and find a surprising treat in the form of Last Night in Soho.

NEON NEWS: FALLING FOR FIGARO & THE GREEN KNIGHT!

Even though we’re holding THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE for another week, we’re adding two new films to the mix. Our first selection is a UK import that has had many audience members swooning – FALLING FOR FIGARO. Our second selection is a film that has already played in this market – but several NEON fans have been asking for it – THE GREEN KNIGHT. Both of these could be gone in a week…so hurry down.

Please remember that our new health and safety protocol starts this Friday!
THE NEON wants to keep our Staff and Patrons safe! Our Board of Directors has sought advisement from Montgomery County Health Department and the Center for Disease Control.  Masks will continue to be required for all guests age 6 and higher until further notice.  Beginning Oct. 1, 2021, all patrons aged 12 and over will be required to present proof of vaccination with a photo ID or a negative COVID-19 test from the last 72 hours. (Self-administered tests will not be accepted. Test results must include name, test result, and a timestamp within the past 72 hours.) We will continue to monitor the community’s health data and amend our policies based on guidance. Please stay tuned to THE NEON’s website for the latest updates. A couple helpful hints!! Some friends recently got back from the East Coast, and one had a solution for an easy way to always have proof of vaccination with you. Take a single picture of your photo ID and your vaccination card in the same shot. You’ll be able to flash this photo at our box office, and that will work as proof enough for us. If you have a smart phone, you could also download the app that most folks in NYC are using to get into movies, Broadway shows and restaurants – NYCCOVIDSAFE. This app will have you take a photo of your ID and your vaccine card – and it saves you from having to hunt for a photo on your phone. I downloaded it, and it’s very easy to use.
Please remember – We ask that you arrive before showtime to allow for checking everyone in before the auditorium gets dark!

In early November, we’ll have a French-Algerian film about a group of sisters who are searching for their kidnapped brother – SISTERS. On November 12, we’ll start the powerful indigenous story BEANS. The black and white film was made in Los Angeles, but most of the cast and crew hail from the Dayton/Cincinnati area and some are also WSU MoPix alumni. The 16th Annual DAYTON LGBT FILM FESTIVAL is gearing up to be back in person this year! Though things will be a little different (we’ll go an entire week this year with 2 screenings of each selection so we can spread everyone out), we’re delighted that we can bring the best in LGBT cinema back to the big screen. Our website is now live, and tickets are on sale now! Click the image below to watch the trailer for a documentary about queer women who have written some of Country Music’s biggest hits over the years for stars from Willie Nelson and Garth Brooks to Barbara Mandrell and Reba McEntire – INVISIBLE! This weekend marks the opening of a film we’ve been anticipating for a while. Many critics already agree that Jennifer Hudson will get an Oscar nomination for playing Aretha Franklin in RESPECT – opening Thursday night. In addition, we’ve got a surprise! Starting Friday, for three shows only, we have an indie treat – Udo Kier in SWAN SONG (just wait until you see the trailer). ANNETTE and NINE DAYS will stick around for one more week…then we’ll open a film that we’re very excited about – CODA. Tickets for our Aug. 19 preview screening of this highly anticipated, award-winning film are on sale now!

In regards to NINE  DAYS, we’ve had several patrons rave that it is incredible. Richard, a long-time NEON fan, wrote “you want to make some room in your schedule for a viewing. This is an unbelievable piece of filmmaking.” We hope you’ll take his advice.
It’s been two weeks since we launched our Projecting Our Future fundraising campaign…and we’re getting closer to our goal! It’s hard to believe that it’s been 9 years since we switched from 35mm to digital projection, but our digital projectors are already out of warranty and parts are no longer being made for them. Our initial goal is to raise $85,000…and the fantastic news is that the Jack W. and Sally D. Eichelberger Foundation of the Dayton Foundation has already committed a lead gift of $50,000 to the campaign! Each week, doors at THE NEON open at 10:30am, and tickets are given on a first-come, first-serve basis. Featuring episodic shorts from popular characters in the PBS Kids library, these screenings will give an opportunity for families to enjoy the movie-going experience together in a budget-friendly way while keeping kids thoughtfully engaged over the summer. Each Saturday will focus on a different program, and activity books will be available for children to take home after the screenings. This film festival is made possible from the generous support of The RubiGirls Scholarship Initiative. Week #7 (Aug 14) will be PEG & CAT. Week #8 (Aug 21) will be WILD KRATTS. (more titles coming soon…and details about a special party during week #10 of the fest!)
Back in late 2019 and early 2020, we partnered with The Human Race Theatre Company for their “Women of Influence” Season. PNC sponsored a film series for us that spoke to each of the theatre company’s productions. Unfortunately, COVID cut the series short…but we want to make good on our promises. Because LOOPED began its run at The Loft Theatre for three weeks starting on Aug. 5 (click HERE to learn more about that production), we have re-booked the film that we think best accompanies this show – DIE, DIE MY DARLING – starring Tallulah Bankhead. This film will screen Monday, August 23 at 7:30. If you had a Season Pass for this film series, we’ll still accept it…and you can reserve your spot by filling out this QUESTIONNAIRE. With its Slacker-inspired structure, fanciful form, and exuberant magical realism, SUMMERTIME is a free-verse poem—of the kids, by the kids, for the kids. The young poets radiate vitality, honesty, and profound emotion. Local filmmaker Max Kaplan will host the Dayton premiere of his latest short film HAWAIItonight, Wednesday, July 21 at 7:00 and 9:00. “HAWAII is a coming of age story that follows two high school sweethearts Erika Bierman (THE HUNGER GAMES, DUMB AND DUMBER TO) and Stone Taul (GOOD KIDS) as they say goodbye to everything they have known during their last summer before college; playing music, making memories, and chasing dreams, but ultimately learning how to say goodbye. The film is based on the director Max Kaplan’s high school experience and his time playing in the Dayton psych band Nudists on Strike. HAWAII boasts an incredible compilation soundtrack by both popular and local artists including Summer Salt, King Shelter, Surf Team, Nudists on Strike, and Sister Owsley. Two of Kaplan’s freshman shorts, GET THE F*CK TO CHURCH and SONG OF SONGS will also be shown. Whether we are learning from the past, relishing in hood politics, or examining the dynamics of friendship, this film series allows us to collectively experience the art of cinema, together. Featuring three Black-owned local businesses and partnering with THE NEON in Dayton allows for mingling amongst the creative community + supporting the local business ecosystem. This movie night series is a chance to celebrate as a community the importance of Black storytelling and the way it honors the multi-dimensional layers of our culture, experience, and perspective. This movie night series is the perfect way to close out a busy work week and step into the weekend with laughs, high vibes, + a little reminiscing on the good old days.” (Scripted in Black) Tickets are $20 each and come with a complimentary popcorn and soda. Hawaii – A Max Kaplan Film

The premiere of Max Kaplan’s latest film “Hawaii”, a Luminous Coast production, will take place at  The Neon in Dayton on July 21st. Director Max Kaplan partnered with cinematographer Luke Holliday, producer Savannah Webb and writer Jesse Wright on this film. 
“Hawaii” is a coming of age story that follows two high school sweethearts as they say goodbye to everything they have known during their last summer before college, playing music, making memories and chasing dreams, but ultimately learning how to say goodbye. 

The film is based on Kaplan’s high school experience and his time playing in the Dayton psych band Nudists on Strike. “Hawaii” boasts an incredible compilation soundtrack by both popular and local artists including Summer Salt, King Shelter, Surf Team, Nudists on Strike, and Sister Owsley. Filming took place in the greater Dayton region in 2020 under Covid protocols.

“Hawaii” is Kaplan’s 14th movie, he has been releasing films since the age of 11 and is currently attending Ohio University’s Honors film program.

Tickets are available for the 7pm and 9pm showing on Wed, July 21st online and at theater.

SIB Celebrates Black Storytelling in Film

A new movie series is kicking off tonight at The Neon, curated by Dana Graham, Founder and Creative Director of Scripted in Black (SIB).  “This movie night series is a chance for the community to celebrate the importance of Black storytelling and the way it honors the multi-dimensional layers of our culture, experience, and perspective,” explained Graham. Tickets for tonights event may be purchased on The Neon’s online ticket site.

Each of the evenings events  will begin with a mixer featuring a locally owned black businesses before the showing of a film they’ve had a hand in selecting .  “The Scripted in Black Team is excited to provide and enjoy this experience with our community because it creates an opportunity to be lifted through fellowship and supporting local Black businesses and Black films together,” said Graham. “Storytelling has always been a rich tradition and necessity in Black culture. The films chosen by each featured business express an aspect of our culture that makes us resilient, determined, creative, lit, hopeful, strong, and beautiful.”

What a great weekend! SUMMER OF SOUL is off to a terrific start, and audiences are adoring this powerful new doc! A CALL FOR GARDENING VOLUNTEERS! A couple months ago, while I was on my hands and knees pulling hundreds of weeds, a customer suggested that I put out a call to some of our supporters (who love gardening) who might be willing to help us manage some of our grounds. The corner of our parking lot (at St. Clair and Fifth St.) is in need of some major love, and I simply don’t have enough hours in the day. Is there any chance that any of you might be willing to come and volunteer a few hours to help spruce it up?
A farewell to Ian. If you’re a regular at THE NEON, then you know Ian Bonnett. He’s been working here for 8 years…first as a part-timer, then as a “third keyholder,” and now as our Assistant Manager. Ian will be leaving us this week. He had an opportunity that was too good to resist, and we will certainly miss him…he’s been a treasure to us at THE NEON. Please help us in wishing him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

Starting on July 3 at 11am, THE NEON and ThinkTV PBS will begin presenting a 10-week, FREE Summer Family Film Festival. Each week, doors will open at 10:30am, and tickets will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Featuring episodic shorts from popular characters in the PBS Kids library, these screenings will give an opportunity for families to enjoy the movie-going experience together in a budget-friendly way while keeping kids thoughtfully engaged over the summer.
Each Saturday will focus on a different program, and activity books will be available for children to take home after the screenings

This week, we’re moving right along with another film that has a Dayton connection. 12 MIGHTY ORPHANS, the new film based on the beloved bestseller, stars Dayton’s own Martin Sheen! Though our much loved WSU grad combo of HOLLER and WE STILL MAKE THINGS will stick around for a second week, Thursday will be your last chance to catch SUBLET on the big screen. Attention Families with Young Kids! Starting on July 3 at 11am, THE NEON and ThinkTV PBS will begin presenting a 10-week, FREE Summer Family Film Festival. Short films from PBS Kids will screen on Saturday mornings at 11am on a first-come, first-serve basis. This is a great, affordable way to keep kids engaged this summer…and ThinkTV will provide activity books for kids to take home after each screening. More details will be available in next week’s newsletter, but I wanted to make sure you were the first to hear about this. Please help us spread the word. Scripted in Black, an exclusive multi-disciplinary arts collective that centers the work and collaboration of Black + Brown unconventional creatives, will be hosting a series of films in July, and tickets are already on sale. “When SIB thinks of super chill kick back Thursday vibes, we envision a film series featuring just a few of the greatest Black classics + favorites to date. Whether we are learning from the past, relishing in hood politics, or examining the dynamics of friendship, this film series allows us to collectively experience the art of cinema, together. Featuring three Black-owned local businesses and partnering with THE NEON in Dayton allows for mingling amongst the creative community + supporting the local business ecosystem. This movie night series is a chance to celebrate as a community the importance of Black storytelling and the way it honors the multi-dimensional layers of our culture, experience, and perspective. This movie night series is the perfect way to close out a busy work week and step into the weekend with laughs, high vibes, + a little reminiscing on the good old days.” (Scripted in Black) Tickets are $20 each and come with a complimentary popcorn and soda. THE BACK STORY: The sequel to 2017’s The Hitman’s Bodyguard, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard once again stars Ryan Reynolds as Michael Bryce, a Triple A-rated bodyguard … Or at least he was. You see, he’s been having recurring nightmares after dealing with Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson), the man responsible for one of his greatest failures.

Unfortunately for Michael, his sabbatical from bodyguarding is about to come to an abrupt end thanks to Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek), a.k.a. Darius’ equally hotheaded – and lethal – wife. It seems her hubby has been kidnapped by the Italian mafia, the country where Michael just so happens to be trying to enjoy a much-needed vacation. But, as all three of them are about to find out when Aristotle Papadopolous begins to enact his plan to restore Greece as the head of European civilization, there will be no vacations anytime soon, especially as the body count starts rising.

THE REVIEW: The Hitman’s Bodyguard was a fun but frivolous hit when released to theaters nearly five oh so seemingly long years ago. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, while fun, definitely ups the frivolous nature of things, feeling at times more like a live action video game than anything resembling a true movie.  Sure, there are some fun moments, but as a whole, the film is an unnecessary sequel akin to an Ocean’s Twelve or Thirteen where you can clearly tell the cast is having fun – possibly more than the audience.

Take plausibility out of the equation and The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is still a ridiculous, trio buddy comedy with Grand Theft Auto-level violence and profanity that, if he wasn’t in the movie, would likely make Jackson blush. Hayek is the clear star of the film as she proves she can be as rough and tumble as her male counterparts, but overall, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is … Silly. Seriously. It’s a movie that feels like a 90s high school teen would have written or, at best, Michael Bay. It’s got some fun moments, but it’s nothing that will be the highlight of anyone’s resume thanks to the aforementioned video game level violence, constant quips and absolutely inane plot twists and turns.

In short, if you’re looking for 90 minutes of turn-your-brain-off-and-just-watch-it entertainment, you may enjoy The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. If you’re thinking of paying a premium for it, however, your wallet might need to be protected from you.

Ohio Filmmaker’s Directorial Debut Opens Thurs at Neon

Nicole Riegel is the director and writer of the film “Holler.” It’s a story set in a Rust Belt Ohio town that follows teenager Ruth as she spends her days collecting cans and scrap metal with her brother, trying to put together enough cash to avoid being evicted as she is torn between loyalty to her town, her family, and the dream of a college education.  Riegel drew inspiration for this film came from growing up in Jackson, Ohio. She wanted to showcase young women from where she grew up seeking higher education.  She shares that she grew up watching people on screen from Appalachia almost portrayed as jokes, as hillbillies, as ignorant, always men, never with a sense of humor or warmth or intelligence.

 

I grew up wanting to get out of Jackson, only to – as a grown woman, I sort of had to, you know, return to this place in order to have a future. So when I was a teenager, I wanted to be a film director. I wanted to write and direct my films. And I applied to art schools, and I was accepted. And I didn’t go because it felt like a betrayal to leave my family behind and my community, and no one in my family had ever gone to college at that point.

Instead she joined the Army National Guard because everyone in her family and her community joined the military. She was at Fort Jackson, S.C., being trained on the M16A2. At the end of her military years, she came back to Ohio and enrolled in a film class at Wright State University. There she was introduced to the documentarians Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar, and her world was opened up to incredible world of film. She then moved to Los Angeles a few years later to attend UCLA  for graduate film school. In 202 the Palm Springs International Film Festival named Riegel their “Directors to Watch.”

Yellow Springs Filmmakers Partner with Chappelle on Documentary

This year’s Tribeca Film Festival will close on June 19th with a still untitled documentary directed and produced by Academy Award winning Yellow Springs filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar.  The documentary, making its world premiere, portrays the challenges facing a rural village in Ohio during the early days of the pandemic. It captures the emotional period of the Black Lives Matter movement and the remarkable leadership of the town’s youth who started weekly marches and rallies in comedian Dave Chappelle’s home town of Yellow Springs.

“Dave is our neighbor. We see him in the grocery store, and on the street. When Dave came to us with the idea, we were immediately struck by the challenge to tell the story of our part of the world during the pandemic and the national reckoning on racial injustice,” said Reichert. “This was a historic moment and we really wanted to chronicle this place and this time, it just felt right.”

“Dave and his friends entrusted our team of amazing young filmmakers from Ohio with intimate moments which enabled us to create a moving portrait of artists’ as they navigated a time of fear and isolation,” said Bognar.

 

Neon News: DREAM HORSE & Eric Bana in THE DRY Start This Week!

WHEN HITLER STOLE PINK RABBIT, based on the bestseller by Judith Kerr, was beautifully directed by Oscar winner Caroline Link (NOWHERE IN AFRICA). DRUNK BUS – a wonderful film that SLASH FILM calls “a unique and uplifting anti-road trip comedy” – is currently at “100% Fresh” on rottentomatoes.

THE BACK STORY: Ezekiel “Zeke” Burns (Chris Rock) is a detective with a lot of stress in his life. In addition to going through a divorce, he’s still living in the shadow of his father Marcus (Samuel L. Jackson), the former South Metro Police Captain. Throw in the fact he also turned in a dirty cop and took a bullet when his backup failed to arrive and Zeke understandable seems grizzled well beyond his years … Which should in turn explain why he has little to no desire to train a rookie detective in William Schenk (Max Minghella).
But when Zeke (with his new partner in tow) is called to the scene of what was suspected to be a homeless man hit by a subway train, he quickly learns that he now has an even bigger problem to deal with: A possible disciple of the former John Kramer, the serial killer known as Jigsaw …
THE REVIEW: What happens if you were to upgrade the acting of the past Saw films while retaining the – with apologies to All Elite Wrestling – blood and guts for which the franchise is known? Spiral answers that question: You get a movie that satisfies America’s longstanding obsession with serial killers while delivering a dramatic stage interesting enough to make you keep watching between the absolutely gruesome – and yes, I do mean gruesome – murders.
Say what you want about Chris Rock’s past movie work; the man has quietly been putting in work both in front and behind the camera for several years – and Spiral is his arguably his finest acting performance to date.
Spiral doesn’t work with Rock’s nuanced performance. Even when his hardened detective cracks the occasional joke, it doesn’t feel like you’re watching the stand-up comic that has been slaying audiences for the better part of four decades. Instead, you are watching a man battling inner and external demons, both of which come to a head once he starts seeing bodies of people he has a connection to start to pile up. If you were to remove the torture devices, it wouldn’t be a Saw spinoff (obviously), but it would still work as a serial killer drama – and that’s a testament to how far both Rock and longstanding Saw franchise head Darren Bousman have come.
If there was one nitpicky problem with Spiral, it would have to be part of the ending. Without going into detail, the “too cool to be bothered” explanation by the killer takes away a bit from the dramatic crescendo to which the film builds; given their motivation, this moment needs to be a bit more impassioned as opposed to coming off like “Oh yeah – I killed these people … You want some coffee?” Throw in one seeming hole that may or may not have been left open to some sort of sequel and it takes away a bit from the apex of the story, which is as over-the-top as you’d expect but mostly works … mostly.
But for a film that is arguably the best sequel of a franchise that most people would have been hard pressed to ever imagine upon the initial installment’s release, Spiral avoids going down one in fine, brutal fashion.
