Returning to Toronto International Film Fest – 4 Years Later!

September 5, 2023 By Jonathan McNeal

Hello Dayton937!

It’s been 4 years since I’ve made the trip to Toronto for TIFF (The Toronto International Film Festival), and my soul has truly missed it.  I know that this year will be very different.  Not only has COVID changed how festivals work, the ongoing writer & actor strikes will also likely change the energy at this year’s festival.  Regardless, I’m anxious to go and submerge myself in multiple screenings of international cinema for 9 days.

The illuminated sign on King Street West indicates the start of the festival!

I’m feeling a little out of practice, but I hope to update you every day with details about the films I’m seeing, the Q&A’s I’m observing and the glitterati I’m spotting.  I’m not sure how many parties will be happening this year, but I hope to pop in on a couple.

For industry folks, the fest works a little different.  I will have an opportunity to see 10 films with the general public.  These are the screenings where directors, producers and stars might walk the Red Carpet and be interviewed for television.  When people think “glamorous film festivals,” these are the screenings that come to mind.  That said, the majority of the films I screen will be in multiplex settings with other press and industry folks.  I might get sandwiched between an international sales agent on one side and someone writing for HOLLYWOOD REPORTER on the other.  It’s fun to rub elbows with a variety of people who make this industry tick.

Maya Hawke as Flannery O’Connor in WILDCAT

I already have a handful of tickets to screenings and events.  In addition to the premiere of NORTH STAR on Opening Night (the directorial debut of Kristin Scott Thomas – starring Scarlett Johansson), Taika Waititi’s latest NEXT GOAL WINS and the anticipated feature WILDCAT (directed by Ethan Hawke and produced by Dayton’s own Karri O’Reilly), I’m so delighted that I scored a ticket to IN CONVERSATION WITH PEDRO ALMODOVAR – a sit down interview (Charlie Rose-style – but in front of an audience)  with my favorite filmmaker of all time!

I’ll try to stay on top of updating this blog on a daily basis after my first day of movie watching.  (Screenings start on Sept. 7 – and I’ll have a full day!)  I’ll screen films through the 15th and head back to Dayton on the 16th.

Thanks for reading.

More soon,

Jonathan

Neon Newsflash: RED ROCKET and THE VELVET QUEEN!

January 19, 2022 By Jonathan McNeal

This Friday, we’re bringing two new films to town. The mesmerizing documentary THE VELVET QUEEN and the boisterous and critically acclaimed RED ROCKET. Both of these films might only play for a week…so hurry down. LICORICE PIZZA will stick around for another week, and DRIVE MY CAR will stick around for one show per day over the weekend. If you still need to see THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH on the big screen, Thursday will be your last chance at THE NEON.

Several distributors are moving dates around this season, so we will likely be filling the early weeks of February with some critically lauded titles from earlier in the Awards Season that deserve to be seen on the big screen – like THE POWER OF THE DOG and THE LOST DAUGHTER. I’ll keep you posted. That said, we’re still on track to open two incredible new films next Friday (both of which will likely garner Academy Award nominations) – Almodovar’s PARALLEL MOTHERS and the animated documentary FLEE.
One special event that I know many of you will be excited about is now set for March 27 & 30 – 2 special screenings of ANYTHING GOES – a filmed version of last summer’s West End production starring the luminous Sutton Foster. This Cole Porter treasure is a treat! Tickets are available now! More details can be found on our website.
NEW IN-PERSON ENGAGEMENT:
Synopsis for THE VELVET QUEEN: “In the heart of the Tibetan highlands, multi-award-winning nature photographer Vincent Munier guides writer Sylvain Tesson on his quest to document the infamously elusive snow leopard. Munier introduces Tesson to the subtle art of waiting from a blind spot, tracking animals, and finding the patience to catch sight of the beasts. Through their journey in the Tibetan peaks, inhabited by invisible presences, the two men ponder humankind’s place amongst the magnificent creatures and glorious landscapes they encounter along the way.” (Oscilloscope) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
Synopsis for RED ROCKET: “The audacious new film from writer-director Sean Baker (THE FLORIDA PROJECT and TANGERINE), starring Simon Rex in a magnetic, live-wire performance, RED ROCKET is a darkly funny and humane portrait of a uniquely American hustler and a hometown that barely tolerates him.” (A24) The Chicago Tribune says this film is “Raunchy, restless, cinematically vital…” Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
CONTINUING IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA
To read more about all the films that are still available, please visit our WEBSITE. Here’s a LINK with a video I made about how Virtual Cinema works. Our Virtual Cinema is slowing down, but we still want to bring new films now and again that deserve to be seen that you can enjoy from home! As a reminder, THE LAST PICTURE SHOW and A RAISIN IN THE SUN are only available until January 31!
UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENT
January 20th  – A DREAM TO SERVE THROUGH EDUCATION is a new short documentary that is being presented by the founder of The Dayton School. “The Dayton School (TDS) is an up and coming revolutionary educational experience for students, families, and the surrounding community. The school will specifically service Dayton students, however, through after school programming and community partners we plan to offer educational experiences for TDS families and the community. This documentary outlines a story of a young woman’s journey of resilience through poverty to educational success. Follow her on this voyage as she transforms humbling life lessons and early teaching experiences into passion and commitment to create rewarding education environments for all Dayton families. Witness her unflagging support for the Dayton community as a dedicated educator inside and outside of the classroom. It is the belief of The Dayton School that every child, regardless of zip code, economic status, or culture, deserves a free holistic project based style education that transcends beyond high school. The Dayton School has a mission to improve access, opportunity, and resources for students through multiple exemplary education pathways. This short 30 minute documentary can be viewed for $10 on Thursday January 20th at 7:30pm at THE NEON. After viewing the film The Dayton School’s board, and/or film participants will be available for questions, comments, and discussion. Tickets are available at THE NEON’s Box Office or via this LINK. For more information regarding The Dayton School, including ways in which you can support prior to viewing, please visit Daytonschoolohio.org.” (taken from press notes)
THE NEON wants to keep our Staff and Patrons safe! Our Board of Directors has sought advisement from Combined Health Dayton & Montgomery County and the Center for Disease Control…we’re also looking at other arthouse cinemas in major markets across the country. We have recently made one minor change to our policy. Masks are now required for all guests age 2 and higher until further notice.  All patrons aged 12 and over will be required to present proof of vaccination with a photo ID or a negative COVID-19 test from the last 72 hours. (Self-reported vaccination records not verified by a third party health care provider are not acceptable. Test results must include name, test result, and a timestamp within the past 72 hours.) We will continue to monitor the community’s health data and amend our policies based on guidance. Please stay tuned to THE NEON’s website for the latest updates. A couple helpful hints!! Take a single picture of your photo ID and your vaccination card in the same shot. You’ll be able to flash this photo at our box office, and that will work as proof enough for us. If you have a smart phone, you could also download the app that most folks in NYC are using to get into movies, Broadway shows and restaurants – NYCCOVIDSAFE. This app will have you take a photo of your ID and your vaccine card – and it saves you from having to hunt for a photo on your phone. I downloaded it, and it’s very easy to use.
Please remember – We ask that you arrive before showtime to allow for checking everyone in before the auditorium gets dark!
Thank you for all of your continued support through these challenging times!
We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

NEON NEWS: FALLING FOR FIGARO & THE GREEN KNIGHT!

September 29, 2021 By Jonathan McNeal

Even though we’re holding THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE for another week, we’re adding two new films to the mix. Our first selection is a UK import that has had many audience members swooning – FALLING FOR FIGARO. Our second selection is a film that has already played in this market – but several NEON fans have been asking for it – THE GREEN KNIGHT. Both of these could be gone in a week…so hurry down.

Please remember that our new health and safety protocol starts this Friday!
THE NEON wants to keep our Staff and Patrons safe! Our Board of Directors has sought advisement from Montgomery County Health Department and the Center for Disease Control.  Masks will continue to be required for all guests age 6 and higher until further notice.  Beginning Oct. 1, 2021, all patrons aged 12 and over will be required to present proof of vaccination with a photo ID or a negative COVID-19 test from the last 72 hours. (Self-administered tests will not be accepted. Test results must include name, test result, and a timestamp within the past 72 hours.) We will continue to monitor the community’s health data and amend our policies based on guidance. Please stay tuned to THE NEON’s website for the latest updates. A couple helpful hints!! Some friends recently got back from the East Coast, and one had a solution for an easy way to always have proof of vaccination with you.
NEW IN-PERSON ENGAGEMENTS:
Synopsis for FALLING FOR FIGARO: “From award-winning director Ben Lewin (THE SESSIONS, THE CATCHER WAS A SPY) FALLING FOR FIGARO follows a brilliant young fund manager named Millie (Danielle Macdonald: PATTI CAKES, DUMPLIN), who quits her job and ends things with her longterm boyfriend in order to fulfill her dream of becoming an opera singer — in the Scottish Highlands. She begins intense vocal training lessons with renowned but fearsome singing teacher and former opera diva Meghan Geoffrey-Bishop (Joanna Lumley – ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS). It is there she meets Max, another of Meghan’s students who is also training for the upcoming “Singer of Renown” contest. The competition between Millie and Max gradually evolves into something different and deeper.” (IFC Films) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
Synopsis for THE GREEN KNIGHT: “An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, THE GREEN KNIGHT tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger. From visionary filmmaker David Lowery (who directed THE OLD MAN & THE GUN – partially shot in Dayton) comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table.” (A24) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer. For a fun little video about the background of The Green Knight, click this LINK.
CONTINUING IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA:
Synopsis for SURGE: Brilliant actor Ben Whishaw stars in SURGE, directed by Aneil Karia. “Joseph (Ben Whishaw) works in security at a London airport. His life proceeds in an orderly fashion but, in spite of his contact with other people during the course of his job, he seems to be isolated from his surroundings. The anxiety felt by some passengers when they are patted down before check-in and the impersonal atmosphere amongst his colleagues both affect him. After a visit to his parents, something snaps inside this loner and another Joseph comes to light: one who takes what he wants, invades others’ personal space and does not even shy away from criminal acts. Between eruption, escalation and destruction, he undergoes a painful process of self-discovery, the starting point of which is closer than we would like to admit to the actual living and working conditions of many people.” (FilmRise) THE GUARDIAN says that it’s “[A] big pressure-cooker performance from Ben Whishaw.” Click the image below to watch the trailer and reserve access. This film can be viewed on your computer or mobile device or via your TV with Apple TV or Roku. Additional instructions can be found on Eventive’s Help Page. Our Virtual Cinema is slowing down, but we still want to bring new films now and again that deserve to be seen that you can enjoy from home! (Click titles to watch each film’s trailer.) In October, we’ll have a documentary about how Gospel quartets became the basis for rock’n’roll – HOW THEY GOT OVER. In early November, we’ll have a French-Algerian film about a group of sisters who are searching for their kidnapped brother – SISTERS. On November 12, we’ll start the powerful indigenous story BEANS. More titles are on the way…stay tuned!
UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENTS:
“Take a noir-inspired and surreal trip through L.A. as Max, a failed writer, prepares to leave the city where her dreams died. On Wednesday, October 6th at 7:30, Wright State Film School grad, Trevor Hollen, will be presenting his award-winning feature film debut, EATING CARS – in conjunction with its US and UK release. The black and white film was made in Los Angeles, but most of the cast and crew hail from the Dayton/Cincinnati area and some are also WSU MoPix alumni. After the screening, there will be a Q&A with Trevor. Proceeds will go to the WSU MoPix department.” (taken from press notes) Tickets are available now on our website. Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.

The 16th Annual DAYTON LGBT FILM FESTIVAL is gearing up to be back in person this year! Though things will be a little different (we’ll go an entire week this year with 2 screenings of each selection so we can spread everyone out), we’re delighted that we can bring the best in LGBT cinema back to the big screen. Our website is now live, and tickets are on sale now! Click the image below to watch the trailer for a documentary about queer women who have written some of Country Music’s biggest hits over the years for stars from Willie Nelson and Garth Brooks to Barbara Mandrell and Reba McEntire – INVISIBLE! You’ll see a lot of recognizable musicians interviewed in this doc – from Emmylou Harris to Linda Ronstadt. A friend told me that there are a lot of connections in this film to the Dayton Women’s Music Collective from Canal St. – for those of you who remember this, please spread the word!

Anthony Hopkins & Olivia Colman in THE FATHER and More From The Neon

March 10, 2021 By Jonathan McNeal

We’re so thrilled to be seeing more and more familiar faces these days…and I’m delighted to say that our line-up keeps getting stronger. This Thursday, we’ll open one of my favorite films of 2020 – THE FATHER. Olivia Colman and Anthony Hopkins give outstanding performances (I didn’t know I could love them more). NOMADLAND (which is sweeping up “Best Picture” awards at numerous award ceremonies) and BOOGIE (from the author and producer of FRESH OFF THE BOAT) will stick around for another week, and MY SALINGER YEAR (which our audiences really loved) will get three more screenings this weekend. On Thursday, March 18, we’ll open THE COURIER – starring NEON-favorite Benedict Cumberbatch and Rachel Brosnahan (of the MRS. MAISEL fame).

In our Virtual Cinema, we have 2 new films. STRAY follows three stray dogs through the streets and alleys of Istanbul. VARIETY calls it “Virtuosic,” IndieWire says it is “Profound,” and SCREEN INTERNATIONAL calls it “Beautiful.” And for all you Anglophiles, we have a very funny British comedy – DAYS OF THE BAGNOLD SUMMER.
Synopsis for THE FATHER: Opens March 11! “Anthony is 80, mischievous, living defiantly alone and rejecting the carers that his daughter, Anne, encouragingly introduces. Yet help is also becoming a necessity for Anne; she can’t make daily visits anymore and Anthony’s grip on reality is unravelling. As we experience the ebb and flow of his memory, how much of his own identity and past can Anthony cling to? How does Anne cope as she grieves the loss of her father, while he still lives and breathes before her? THE FATHER warmly embraces real life, through loving reflection upon the vibrant human condition; heart-breaking and uncompromisingly poignant – a movie that nestles in the truth of our own lives.” (Sony Classics) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
Synopsis for THE COURIER: “THE COURIER is a true-life spy thriller, the story of an unassuming British businessman Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch) recruited into one of the greatest international conflicts in history. At the behest of the UK’s MI-6 and a CIA operative (Rachel Brosnahan), he forms a covert, dangerous partnership with Soviet officer Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze) in an effort to provide crucial intelligence needed to prevent a nuclear confrontation and defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis.” (Roadside Attractions) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
NEW IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA:
Synopsis for STRAY: Available starting March 12! “Through the eyes of three stray dogs wandering the streets of Istanbul, STRAY explores what it means to live as a being without status or security. As they search for food and shelter, Zeytin, Nazar and Kartal embark on inconspicuous journeys through Turkish society that allow us an unvarnished portrait of human life — and their own canine culture. Zeytin, fiercely independent, embarks on solitary adventures through the city at night; Nazar, nurturing and protective, easily befriends the humans around her; while Kartal, a shy puppy living on the outskirts of a construction site, finds refuge with the security guards who care for her. The disparate lives of Zeytin, Nazar and Kartal intersect when they each form intimate bonds with a group of young Syrians who share the streets with them. Whether they lead us into bustling streets or decrepit ruins, the gaze of these strays act as windows into the overlooked corners of society: women in loveless marriages, protesters without arms, refugees without sanctuary. The film is a critical observation of human civilization through the unfamiliar gaze of dogs and a sensory voyage into new ways of seeing.” (Magnolia Pictures) Tickets for accessing the film are $12 for 72 hours. This film can be viewed on your computer or mobile device or via your TV with Apple TV or Roku. Additional instructions can be found on Eventive’s HELP PAGE. Click the image below to watch the trailer and reserve your ticket.
Synopsis for DAYS OF THE BANGNOLD SUMMER: Available starting March 12! “Based on the critically acclaimed graphic novel, DAYS OF THE BAGNOLD SUMMER is a funny yet sweet coming-of-age story about single motherhood and Metallica. Daniel was supposed to spend the summer with his dad and his dad’s new wife in Florida, but when his dad cancels the trip Daniel and his mom suddenly face the prospect of six long weeks together. An epic war of wills ensues in their suburban home as Daniel just wants to listen to heavy metal and start a band while his mom hopes to rekindle the fun times they used to have together. Featuring original songs by Belle and Sebastian.” (Greenwich Entertainment) Tickets for accessing the film are $9.99 for 72 hours. This film can be viewed on your computer or mobile device or via your TV with Apple TV or Roku. Additional instructions can be found on Eventive’s HELP PAGE. Click the image below to watch the trailer and reserve your ticket.
Synopsis for GUSTAV STICKLEY: AMERICAN CRAFTSMAN: “The rise, fall and resurrection of the father of the American Arts and Crafts movement is chronicled in this new documentary. The film offers an unprecedented look at the life and works of Gustav Stickley as told through interviews, archival materials, and a close examination of his most iconic works. It traces the development and evolution of Stickley’s unique style, as well as the creation of his diverse businesses including the Craftsman Magazine, Craftsman Farms and his ground-breaking Manhattan store. It also details the eventual loss of his businesses – and, after several decades, the rebirth and recognition of the movement he inspired.” You can watch this film on your computer or mobile device as well as via Chromecast. For more details about screening this film at home, visit First Run’s HELPpage. Click the image below to watch the trailer and gain 72 hour access to the film for $10.
Synopsis for THE PEOPLE VS. AGENT ORANGE: “The Agent Orange catastrophe did not end with the Vietnam War. Today, the world over, a primary chemical of the toxic defoliant controls weeds in farming, forestry, parks, playgrounds… It wreaks havoc on the human genome, causing deformed births and deadly cancers.
After decades of struggle and tragic personal losses, two heroic women are leading a worldwide movement to end the plague and hold the manufacturers accountable.
In France, Tran To Nga is suing the American chemical industry for poisoning her in Vietnam. In America, Carol Van Strum exposes the continuing use of toxic herbicides.
Incriminating documents disappear. Activists are threatened. A helicopter technician secretly films the contamination of reservoirs, while a massive industrial cover-up goes on.” (Alan Adelson & Kate Taverna) On Thursday, March 18 at 7pm, you can take part in a FREE webinar with author David Zierler. The webinar is co-sponsored by University of Dayton Human Rights Center, the War Legacies Project, and the Children of Vietnam Veterans Health Alliance. Here’s the LINK where you can register and learn more about the webinar. Tickets for accessing THE PEOPLE VS. AGENT ORANGE are $12 for 72 hours. This film can be viewed on your computer or mobile device or via your TV with Apple TV or Roku. Additional instructions can be found on Eventive’s HELP PAGE. Click the image below to watch the trailer and access the film.
To read more about all the films that are still available in our Virtual Cinema, please visit our WEBSITE. Several critically acclaimed films (including some Oscar short-listed films) and audience favorites are still available! Here’s a LINK with a video I made about how Virtual Cinema works.
Would you like to know what titles we have planned for our Virtual cinema? (Click any title to watch that film’s trailer.) On March 19, we’ll open THE INHERITANCE – a powerful and playful hybrid of scripted narrative and documentary about a Black socialist collective. On March 26, we’ll have a wonderful coming-of-age film set in the Quebec Innu community – KUESSIPAN. On April 2, we’ll open the OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS (these will be available virtually as well as in-person). On Earth Day (April 22), we’ll start a new documentary – THE RACE TO SAVE THE WORLD. More titles are on the way…stay tuned!
Due to our limited seating capacity, this year’s OSCAR night is going to be different. In the next couple weeks, I’ll be determining exactly what we’re going to do…and you’ll be the first to know about it. Stay tuned!

NOMADLAND Opens & MINARI Holds at The Neon

February 16, 2021 By Jonathan McNeal

We had a very good weekend at THE NEON. Audiences loved MINARI, and seeing the Spike Lee films on the big screen was a treat. MINARI is going to hold for a second week, but Thursday will be your last chance to catch two of the Spike Lee classics. On Thursday night (we just got permission to add a Thursday screening), we will open another Best Picture contender – NOMADLAND – starring the incredible and much-loved Frances McDormand (this will be the 11th film we’ve played with McDormand since I’ve been with THE NEON).

In our Virtual Cinema, we have 2 new films. RUTH: JUSTICE GINSBURG IN HER OWN WORDS is the new, powerful doc about Ruth Bader Ginsburg (not to be confused with RBG from a couple years ago), and Spike Lee was executive producer on SON OF THE SOUTH – a film that’s based on a true story about a young man turning away from his family’s roots in the KKK.
NEW IN-PERSON ENGAGEMENT:
Synopsis for NOMADLAND: Winner of numerous awards, we’re excited to bring the gorgeous film NOMADLAND to the big screen! “Following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, Fern (Frances McDormand) packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. The third feature film from director Chloé Zhao, NOMADLAND features real nomads Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells as Fern’s mentors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of the American West.”(Searchlight) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
NEW IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA:
Synopsis for RUTH: JUSTICE GINSBURG IN HER OWN WORDS: Available starting Feb. 19! “How does a person with three strikes against her rise to the highest court in the land, the U.S. Supreme Court? The film tells the improbable story of how Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who couldn’t get a job despite graduating first in her law school class in a tie and making Law Review at Harvard and Columbia Law Schools, became an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. It also reveals both the public and private sides of a resilient, resourceful woman who has survived the hostility of the profoundly male universe of government and law to become a revered Justice and icon for gender equality and women’s rights.” (Virgil Films) This film can be viewed on your computer or mobile device. You can also watch via your TV (when you download the Kino Now app on Apple TV, Roku, or Amazon TV/Stick). Additional instructions can be found on the film’s landing page…just click the picture below to watch the trailer and reserve access to the film for $12.
Synopsis for SON OF THE SOUTH: Available starting Feb. 19! From executive producer Spike Lee. “A grandson of a Klansman comes of age during the early 60’s in the deep south and eventually joins the Civil Rights Movement. Based on Bob Zellner’s autobiography THE WRONG SIDE OF MURDER CREEK.” (Vertical Entertainment) This film is available to watch on your computer or mobile device as well as via your smart TV via Chromecast. Click the image below to watch the trailer and reserve 48 hour access to the film for $7.
CONTINUING IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA:
Synopsis for TWO OF US: This is France’s official submission for this year’s Best International Feature.”Two retired women, Nina and Madeleine, have been secretly in love for decades. Everybody, including Madeleine’s family, thinks they are simply neighbors, sharing the top floor of their building. They come and go between their two apartments, enjoying the affection and pleasures of daily life together, until an unforeseen event turns their relationship upside down and leads Madeleine’s daughter to gradually unravel the truth about them.” VIRTUAL BONUS!! Stick around after the film – we’re VERY excited to present an exclusive discussion between writer/director Filippo Meneghetti, star Barbara Sukowa, and international film icon Isabelle Huppert! This film can be viewed on your computer or mobile device or via your TV with Apple TV or Roku. Additional instructions can be found on Eventive’s HELP PAGE. Click the image below to gain 72 hour access to the film for $12.
Synopsis for A GLITCH IN THE MATRIX: Direct from last week’s Sundance Film Festival!! “What if we are living in a simulation, and the world as we know it is not real? To tackle this mind-bending idea, acclaimed filmmaker Rodney Ascher (ROOM 237, THE NIGHTMARE) uses a noted speech from Philip K. Dick to dive down the rabbit hole of science, philosophy, and conspiracy theory. Leaving no stone unturned in exploring the unprovable, the film uses contemporary cultural touchstones like THE MATRIX, interviews with real people shrouded in digital avatars, and a wide array of voices, expert and amateur alike. If simulation theory is not science fiction but fact, and life is a video game being played by some unknowable entity, then who are we, really? A GLITCH IN THE MATRIX attempts to find out.” VIRTUAL BONUS!! Stick around after the film for an exclusive discussion between director Rodney Ascher and critic Joshua Rothkopf, digging deep into simulation theory, filmmaking, and everything in between. This film can be viewed on your computer or mobile device or via your TV with Apple TV or Roku. Additional instructions can be found on Eventive’s HELP PAGE. Click the image below to watch the trailer and gain 72 hour access to the film for $12.
(Click any title to watch that film’s trailer.) On Feb. 26, we’ll open both FALLING (Viggo Morensen’s directorial debut) and LEONA (a story of forbidden love in a Mexican Jewish community). On March 5, we’ll bring a film that I know many design folks will adore – GUSTAV STICKLEY: AMERICAN CRAFTSMAN. And after many delays, we’ll also finally be able to open THE PEOPLE VS. AGENT ORANGE. On March 12, we’ll have THE DAYS OF BANGOLD SUMMER, (a sweet and funny British coming-of-age story) and on March 26, we’ll have SUPER FRENCHIE for all the outdoor sports enthusiasts. More titles are on the way…stay tuned!

BILLIE Holiday Doc and Feel-Good Musical THE PROM at The Neon

December 3, 2020 By Jonathan McNeal

We’ve got a lot of films to get to in the next two weeks…so we’re moving right along. We’re cleaning house this week so we can open THE PROM and BILLIE this weekend…(though THE PROM has a preview screening tonight). These new films are only scheduled for one week because we have MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM, THE MIDNIGHT SKY, and the new film from our hometown Oscar-winning directors Julia Reichert & Steve Bognar – 9 TO 5: THE STORY OF A MOVEMENT – all set for next week!
In our Virtual Cinema, we’ve got a lot going on. ENDING DISEASE (a powerful documentary with a local tie) and ANOTHER ROUND (a fantastic Danish narrative starring Mads Mikkelsen) are two new films that start this weekend. ZAPPA, which is wrapping up its in-person engagement, will move to our Virtual Cinema on Friday.
In the past few days, we’ve read several notes about virtual films that our patrons are loving. Mickey wrote, “WOW. Just streamed WBCN AND THE AMERICAN REVOLUTIONand it absolutely blew me away. Best movie I’ve streamed from you yet, and one of my favorite movies of the entire year period. If you have an interest in early rock n’ roll, the anti-war movement of Vietnam, women’s rights movement, gay rights movement, the late 60’s, Nixon’s ouster, etc., I can’t recommend this movie enough. Bravo.” And moments later, Corey wrote, “My wife and I rented MODERN PERSUASION through The Neon last night, and we loved it! We had not heard of the film until your newsletter, and my wife loves Jane Austen anyway! So thank you!!!!” And raves about THE DONUT KING have been aplenty. We love hearing your responses to our Virtual Engagements. Please keep ’em coming! Details about these virtual films and more are available on the virtual page of our website.
NEW IN-PERSON ENGAGEMENTS:
Synopsis for THE PROM: “Dee Dee Allen (three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (Tony Award winnerJames Corden) are New York City stage stars with a crisis on their hands: their expensive new Broadway show is a major flop that has suddenly flatlined their careers. Meanwhile, in small-town Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan (newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman) is experiencing a very different kind of heartbreak: despite the support of the high school principal (Keegan-Michael Key), the head of the PTA (Kerry Washington) has banned her from attending the prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose). When Dee Dee and Barry decide that Emma’s predicament is the perfect cause to help resurrect their public images, they hit the road with Angie (Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman) and Trent (Andrew Rannells), another pair of cynical actors looking for a professional lift. But when their self-absorbed celebrity activism unexpectedly backfires, the foursome find their own lives upended as they rally to give Emma a night where she can truly celebrate who she is.” (Netflix). Synopsis for BILLIE: “Billie Holiday had one of the greatest voices of all time and changed the face of American music. She was a woman of breath-taking talent and global popularity while also stirring controversy. She started a notable rebellion singing “Strange Fruit” which exposed the realities of Black life in America and earned her powerful enemies. Raw, emotional and brutally honest, Billie is filled with never-before-heard interviews from musical greats like Charles Mingus, Tony Bennett, Sylvia Syms and Count Basie.” (Greenwich Entertainment) Click the image below to watch the trailer.
NEW ENGAGEMENTS IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA:
Synopsis for ENDING DISEASE: Available Starting Dec. 4. “ENDING DISEASE follows the amazing personal stories of patients from the first generation of FDA approved clinical trials using stem cell and regenerative medicine to attempt to cure the most vexing diseases and conditions known to humanity: Cancer, HIV/AIDS, spinal cord injury, eye disease and more. ENDING DISEASE shows how stem cell and regenerative medicine are fundamentally changing medicine from treatments to cures.” One subject of this film is former Wright State basketball player Ryan Custer seen in the photo below. We truly appreciate the folks at DAYTON DAILY NEWS writing a great story about Custer in Sunday’s paper. If you missed the story, it’s HERE. This film can be watched on your computer or mobile device or via your Roku or AppleTV. For additional information regarding accessibility of the film, please visit this Eventive HELP page. Click the image below to watch the trailer and purchase 72 hour access to this film for $12.
Synopsis for ANOTHER ROUND: Available starting Dec. 4! “There’s a theory that we should be born with a small amount of alcohol in our blood, and that modest inebriation opens our minds to the world around us, diminishing our problems and increasing our creativity. Heartened by that theory, Martin and three of his friends, all weary high school teachers, embark on an experiment to maintain a constant level of intoxication throughout the workday. If Churchill won WW2 in a heavy daze of alcohol, who knows what a few drops might do for them and their students? Initial results are positive, and the teachers’ little project turns into a genuine academic study. Both their classes and their results continue to improve, and the group feels alive again! As the units are knocked back, some of the participants see further improvement and others go off the rails. It becomes increasingly clear that while alcohol may have fueled great results in world history, some bold acts carry consequences.” This film can be watched on your computer or mobile device as well as via Chromecast or via an HDMI cable attached to your television. For additional notes regarding connectivity, you can visit the film’s Help Page HERE. Click the image below to watch the trailer and purchase 72 hour access to this film for $12.
Synopsis for ZAPPA: Available virtually starting Dec. 4. “With unfettered access to the Zappa family trust and all archival footage, ZAPPA explores the private life behind the mammoth musical career that never shied away from the political turbulence of its time. Alex Winter’s assembly features appearances by Frank’s widow Gail Zappa and several of Frank’s musical collaborators including Mike Keneally, Ian Underwood, Steve Vai, Pamela Des Barres, Bunk Gardner, David Harrington, Scott Thunes, Ruth Underwood, Ray White and others.” This film can be watched on your computer or mobile device or via your Roku or AppleTV. CONTINUING IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA
Synopsis for WBCN AND THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION: “WBCN AND THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION follows a compelling cast of characters as their lives connect and intersect during the rise of the legendary radio station that became both a player in and a platform for the explosive rock ‘n roll counterculture, passionate anti-war movement, and burgeoning civil rights, women’s rights, and gay rights movements…The material includes never before exhibited film shot by Andy Warhol and cinema vérité pioneer Ricky Leacock, images from notable photographers including the late Peter Simon, brother of singer Carly Simon, and Jeff Albertson, as well as aircheck audio from memorable on-air, in-studio moments.” This film can be watched on your computer or mobile device as well as via Chromecast or via an HDMI cable attached to your television. To read more about all the films that are still available in our Virtual Cinema, please visit our WEBSITE. Several films like THE DONUT KING and MONSOON and RECON are still available. Here’s a LINK with a video I made about how Virtual Cinema works.
Wanna know what titles we’re planning in our virtual cinema? (Click any title to watch that film’s trailer.) On Dec. 9, we’ll open a documentary about the very first days of the COVID outbreak in Wuhan – 76 DAYS – it’s really powerful! On December 11, we will offer a WONG KAR WAI RETROSPECTIVE – full of remastered gems including a personal all-time favorite – IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE. Also on December 11, we’re glad that we can finally bring THE LIBRARY THAT DOLLY BUILT – a film we had planned to play in April before global shutdowns. In January, we’ll have 2 incredible docs…the first is the Sundance winner ACASA MY HOME and the second is a documentary with which we’ll hopefully partner with Veteran and environmental organizations – THE PEOPLE VS. AGENT ORANGE. More titles are on the way…stay tuned!
This holiday season, we’ve had several people ask about gift cards. Gift cards are available at our box office in any denomination during our traditional operating hours. If you’d prefer to mail a check, we can certainly mail a gift card back to you (or its final destination) – just email us at theneon@msn.com for specific instructions. That said, though still the perfect option for the NEON Lover in your life, gift cards are only available for in-person transactions (in-person screenings, concessions, merchandise, etc.). We’ve had a couple people ask about gift cards for Virtual Engagements. Unfortunately, distributors and various platforms handle all monetary transactions for our virtual engagements…processing credit card payments for those films doesn’t go through us. But I have a creative fix! For people who want their loved ones to watch movies through our Virtual Cinema, I’d suggest buying a VISA/MASTERCARD pre-paid gift card and insisting they use it for our films. You could package it with movie candy in a popcorn container and lead them to our site with the correct link. In fact, for a few dollars, we could even help you with the packaging (i.e. see below)…just shoot us an email and we can figure something out. (We also have a handful of t-shirts left…and a limited number of zip-up, fleece hoodies are on the way!)
We just booked two films that have me quite excited. HERSELF is slated for Dec. 30 – one of my absolute favorite films of the year. ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI, the feature directorial debut of Regina King, is slated for January 8. I’ve not seen it yet, but I’ve heard nothing but great things.
Wishing you a safe, healthy and warm December.
My best,
Jonathan

THE CLIMB & More NEON News!

November 20, 2020 By Jonathan McNeal

Audiences have been loving HILLBILLY ELEGY, and it will stick around for another week. We’ve heard numerous rave reviews from audiences exiting the cinema as well as via social media…and we’re glad that people are connecting to it. AMMONITE, a gorgeous film that would normally be a big hit, didn’t perform so well…but we’re going to keep it for one show a day over the weekend – so you’ll still have a few chances to see it. Tomorrow, we will open a critically-acclaimed comedy about a toxic male friendship – THE CLIMB.

In our Virtual Cinema, we have 2 new offerings this week. The beautiful film MONSOON just opened yesterday, and the contemporary Jane Austen romantic comedy MODERN PERSUASION (co-directed by one of our previous festival guests Jonathan Lisecki) opens tomorrow.

NEW FILM FOR IN-PERSON SCREENINGS

Synopsis for THE CLIMB: “Kyle and Mike are best friends who share a close bond — until Mike sleeps with Kyle’s fiancée. THE CLIMB is about a tumultuous but enduring relationship between two men across many years of laughter, heartbreak and rage. It is also the story of real-life best friends who turn their profound connection into a rich, humane and frequently uproarious film about the boundaries (or lack thereof) in all close friendships.” (Sony Classics) Click the image below to visit the film’s site and watch the trailer.

NEW FILMS IN OUR VIRTUAL CINEMA

Synopsis for MONSOON: Available Now! “Kit (Henry Golding from CRAZY RICH ASIANS) returns to Ho Chi Minh City for the first time since he was six years old when his family fled the country in the aftermath of the Vietnam-American war. There he meets Lee, his estranged second cousin, Linh, a young Vietnamese student, and arranges an online date that turns into something more with Lewis (Parker Sawyers from SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU), an American clothing designer. Struggling to make sense of himself in a city he’s no longer familiar with, he embarks on a personal journey across the country that opens up the possibility for friendship, love and happiness.” This film can be watched on your computer or mobile device or via your Roku or AppleTV. For additional information regarding accessibility of the film, please visit this Eventive HELP page. Click the image below to watch the trailer and purchase 72 hour access to this film for $12.
Synopsis for MODERN PERSUASION: Available starting Nov. 20! We’re delighted to bring this romantic comedy with a stellar cast (they had us at Bebe Neuwirth and Jenn Harris) and directed by Jonathan Lisecki and Alex Appel to our Virtual Cinema. Jonathan Lisecki was a special guest several years ago at The Dayton LGBT Film Festival with his hit comedy GAYBY. “A modern telling of Jane Austen’s PERSUASION. Wren Cosgrove is a happy, single, and self-confessed workaholic who, after rising to the top of the corporate ladder, finds herself coming home every night to her cat. When her firm is hired by Owen Jasper, “the man who got away,” long-lost feelings are stirred, giving Wren a second chance at true love.” This film can be watched on your computer or mobile device as well as via Chromecast or via an HDMI cable attached to your television. For additional notes regarding connectivity, you can visit Samuel Goldwyn’s Help page HERE. Click the image below to watch the trailer and purchase 72 hour access to this film for $12.

Synopsis for RECON: Based on the novel PEACE by Richard Bausch. “RECON tells the story of four American soldiers in WW2, who after they witness a vicious murder of an innocent civilian at the hands of their platoon Sergeant, are sent on a reconnaissance/suicide mission lead by a local partisan, an elderly man whose indeterminate loyalties add to the terror and confusion that engulfs the Americans as they are hunted by an unseen enemy. As they struggle to make it off the mountain alive, these American soldiers face the worst that war can offer men…. and through this each finds their own peace.” (Brainstorm Media) This film can be watched on your computer or mobile device or via your Roku or AppleTV.
For additional information regarding accessibility of the film, please visit this Eventive HELP page. Click the image below to watch the trailer and purchase 72 hour access to this film for $12. Many thanks to our friends at The Dayton Literary Peace Prize for working with us to bring this film to you.
Synopsis for CHUCK LEAVELL: THE TREE MAN: Directed by Daytonian Allen Farst. “Filmed in four countries with more than 80 interviews from artists with a combined 58 Grammy Awards by the artist included, CHUCK LEAVELL: THE TREE MAN is the cinematic documentary that shines a light on one of the greatest rock’n roll pianists and keyboardists over the last 40 years. Not just known for his musical influence, Leavell is also one of the biggest names in environmental forestry and was selected the National Tree Farmer of the Year in the United States.” (Niche Productions) This film can be watched on your computer or mobile device or via your Roku or AppleTV. For additional information regarding accessibility of the film, please visit this Eventive HELP page. Click the image below to watch the trailer and purchase 72 hour access to this film for $12.

Wanna know what titles we’re planning in our virtual cinema? (Click any title to watch that film’s trailer.) On Nov. 25, we’ll open WBCN AND THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION – a film about a radical underground radio station set against the social, political and cultural changes during the late 60’s and early 70’s. On Dec. 4, we’ll open two new films – the first is ENDING DISEASE – a documentary that looks at advancements in stem cell therapies and curing the incurable. One subject of the film is Ryan Custer, a former Wright State basketball player who suffered a neck injury; the second is ANOTHER ROUND – Denmark’s highest grossing film in several years starring Mads Mikkelsen. On Dec. 9, we’ll open a documentary about the very first days of the COVID outbreak – 76 DAYS (there’s no trailer yet for 76 DAYS, but here’s a CLIP). More titles are on the way…stay tuned!
In the coming weeks, we will have a nice mix of stunning Oscar contenders and fun, escapist fare. We’re planning to open MANK next Wednesday – it’s David Fincher’s new film about Mankiewicz rushing to finish the screenplay for CITIZEN KANE…but we need to wait a few more days before we put tickets on sale. In the last 24 hours, we just added THE PROM. Based on the beloved Broadway musical, THE PROM opens Dec. 4 for one week…and the cast is stellar – Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Keegan-Michael Key, Kerry Washington, James Cordon and more! In addition to all that, dates keep changing…MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM is now set for Dec. 11.
We hope to see you soon!
Be safe & well.

Blade Runner, More Hitchcock & Artists’ Roundtable!

July 15, 2020 By Jonathan McNeal

Hello NEON Fans!
We’ve gotta keep moving.  Audiences have been loving the Hitchcock films on the big screen (they look and sound incredible), so we’re bringing two more.  If you still need to see VERTIGO or PSYCHO, you only have until Thursday.  On Friday, we’re bringing MARNIE (with Tippi Hedren & Sean Connery) and REAR WINDOW(with Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly). Additionally this week, we will bring back the crowd-favorite BLADE RUNNER: THE FINAL CUT as well as a new senior-driven romantic dramedy – NEVER TOO LATE. If you still need to see THE TOBACONNIST (which audiences are raving about), it will continue in-person screenings through the weekend and its virtual engagement will also continue.
Synopsis for MARNIE: Our “Hitchcock 101 Series” continues this weekend with two familiar leads – Tippi Hedren & Sean Connery in MARNIE! This brilliant film is a favorite of professor emeritus Charles Derry of Wright State’s renowned film program…and Hitchcock was someone we studied quite a bit in film school.  That said, I feel as though this film is not mentioned nearly as often as PSYCHO and VERTIGO.  I think it deserves to be seen on the big screen! “Mark Rutland (Sean Connery) is a customer of one Mr. Strutt, whose business was robbed by his secretary, the mysterious Marnie Edgar (Tippi Hedren). When Marnie applies for a job with Mark, with the intention of stealing from him, Mark — who is obsessively in love with her — blackmails her into marrying him. However, he soon discovers that she has severe psychological issues regarding men, thunderstorms and the color red, and resolves to help her come to terms with her past trauma.”  Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
Synopsis for REAR WINDOW:  We’re delighted to continue our classic Hitchcock retrospectives with 2 Hollywood icons – Grace Kelly and Jimmy Stewart in REAR WINDOW. “The story of a recuperating news photographer who believes he has witnessed a murder. Confined to a wheelchair after an accident, he spends his time watching the occupants of neighboring apartments through a telephoto lens and binoculars and becomes convinced that a murder has taken place.” Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
Synopsis for BLADE RUNNER: THE FINAL CUT: “Deckard (Harrison Ford) is forced by the police Boss (M. Emmet Walsh) to continue his old job as Replicant Hunter. His assignment: eliminate four escaped Replicants from the colonies who have returned to Earth. Before starting the job, Deckard goes to the Tyrell Corporation and he meets Rachel (Sean Young), a Replicant girl he falls in love with.” Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
Synopsis for NEVER TOO LATE: “It’s been decades since Caine, Bronson, Angus and Wendell escaped a POW camp. Now, they’re sharing a new prison, Hogan Hills Retirement Home. The four band together for an escape plan, but the rules of engagement have changed-and so has what they’re fighting for. Never Too Late is a heartwarming story about how you’re never too old to chase your dreams.” Starring James Cromwell, Jacki Weaver, Dennis Waterman, and Jack Thompson. If you’re still not up for in-person screenings, this film will be available in our Virtual Cinema starting next Friday.  Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.
Don’t forget that you can join Dr. Judy Schwartzman and me for a discussion about the film THE TOBACCONIST on Monday, July 20 at 7pm.  If you haven’t seen the film yet, you still have plenty of options to see it in person at THE NEON…or you can rent it in our Virtual Cinema! Synopsis for THE TOBACCONIST – In-Person & Virtual Cinema  Engagement: “Seventeen-year-old Franz journeys to Vienna to apprentice at a tobacco shop. There he meets Sigmund Freud (Bruno Ganz), a regular customer, and over time the two very different men form a singular friendship.” I saw this lovely gem of a film at The Cleveland International Film Festival in 2019, and I’ve been waiting ever since to bring it to THE NEON.  On July 20 at 7pm, Dr. Judy Schwartzman and I will co-facilitate a special “post screening discussion” via Zoom, hosted by the Jewish Community Center of Greater Dayton.  You can sign up for that HERE, and you can click the image below to watch the trailer and gain 72 hour access to the film for $12.
New this week in our Virtual Cinema is a documentary about a professor at Julliard who has helped lead many great actors on their path to greatness.  The film is about his life and and also about the philosophy of his craft. Synopsisfor CREATING A CHARACTER: “What do Jessica Chastain, Viola Davis, and Adam Driver have in common?  They are but a few of the extraordinary actors who have studied under the renowned acting teacher Moni Yakim at Julliard – America’s greatest performing arts school. Born in Jerusalem, Moni was a principal performer with Marcel Marceau’s mime company before becoming a director and teacher.  CREATING A CHARACTER explores his extraordinary life and includes insightful interviews with luminaries like Laura Linney, Anthony Mackie, Kevin Kline and more.” As a special bonus to fans of THE NEON and the Dayton Performing Arts Community, a special Artists’ Roundtable has been scheduled for Sunday, July 19 at 5:00.  You’ll be able to tune in via our Facebook page or our new Youtube page.  The Artists’ Roundtable will include Kevin Moore from The Human Race Theatre Company, Joe Deer from Wright State University, and two New York performing artists who have both worked in Dayton as well as studied with Moni – Colby Lane Chambers and Jasmine Batchelor.  (Batchelor appears in this documentary and is also the star of the critically acclaimed film THE SURROGATE – also offered in THE NEON’s Virtual Cinema.) Click the image below to gain 72 hour access to CREATING A CHARACTER for $10.

NEON Newsletter: Ella Fitzgerald, Bill Nighy & ReOpening News!

June 24, 2020 By Jonathan McNeal

Hello NEON Fans.
Once again, we’re moving right along in our Virtual Cinema.  Today marks the start of a new, charming & stylized dramedy starring Bill Nighy – SOMETIMES ALWAYS NEVER.  On Friday, we will open a fantastic new documentary about the “First Lady of Song” – ELLA FITZGERALD: JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS.
Also this Friday, we’re doing a very soft, quiet reopening.  Just 2 shows per day for one week so we can get our feet wet again and introduce some new mechanics of our operations. (Below, I have outlined some of our new procedures.)  For one week only, starting this Friday, you can come see MISS JUNETEENTH or WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR on the big screen for just $5.

On July 3, we’ll open two brand new films in person. First off is the inspiring documentary JOHN LEWIS: GOOD TROUBLE.  We’ll also open THE TRUTH – starring the powerhouse talents of Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche, and Ethan Hawke – directed by Hirokazu Koreeda (director of SHOPLIFTERS).

Synopsis for SOMETIMES ALWAYS NEVER in our VIRTUAL CINEMA: “Alan (Bill Nighy) is a stylish tailor with moves as sharp as his suits. However, he’s spent years searching for his missing son Michael, who stormed out over a game of Scrabble and hasn’t been seen since. With a body to identify and his family torn apart, Alan must repair his relationship with his youngest son. Worst of all, he must solve the mystery of an online player who might just be Michael–and find the right words before it’s too late.” You can watch this film on your computer or mobile device as well as some smart TVs.  For more details about available devices, please visit the Eventive’s HELP page. Click the image below to watch the trailer and gain 72 hour access for $12.
Synopsis for ELLA FITZGERALD: JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS in our Virtual Cinema: “Ella Fitzgerald was a 15 year-old street kid when she won a talent contest in 1934 at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem. Within months she was a star. ELLA FITZGERALD: JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS follows her extraordinary journey over six decades as her sublime voice transforms the tragedies of her own life and the troubles of her times into joy. The film uses never-before-seen images and unheard interviews to bring Ella Fitzgerald to life and to tell the story of her music – a black woman who makes her career in the face of horrifying racism. Here is an Ella the world never knew – tough, thoughtful, funny, a dazzling musical innovator. The film also uncovers Ella’s commitment to the battle for Civil Rights; and it explores the conflicts that always haunted this intensely private woman: the struggle to reconcile her hunger for adoring audiences with her longing for a domestic life with her husband and son. At a time when she was the biggest singing star in the world, her pianist and friend Oscar Peterson said Ella was ‘the loneliest woman in the world.’ But as Jamie Cullum says ‘her music is one of the reasons it’s worth being on this planet.’ Featuring interviews with: Tony Bennett, Jamie Cullum, Laura Mvula, Johnny Mathis, Smokey Robinson, Cleo Laine, Andre Previn, Norma Miller, Patti Austin, Izsak Perlman, Margo Jefferson, Will Friedwald and a rare interview with Ella’s son, Ray Brown Jr.” (Eagle Rock Entertainment) Here’s a bonus for our virtual fans: Join us for a live video conversation on Sunday, June 28 at 7PM with author & music critic WIll Friedwald, the film’s producer Reggie Nadelson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author/journalist Margo Jefferson and composer, multi-instrumentalist & vocalist Camille Thurman.  Click this LINK to sign up for this special Q&A.  You can watch this film on your computer or mobile device as well as some smart TVs.  For more details about available devices, please visit the Eventive’s HELP page. This film will be available starting this Friday, June 26 in our Virtual Cinema.  Click the image below to watch the trailer and pre-order 72 hour access to the film for $12.
Synopsis for MISS JUNETEENTH – In-Person Screenings: “Turquoise Jones is a single mom who holds down a household, a rebellious teenager, and pretty much everything that goes down at Wayman’s BBQ & Lounge. Turquoise is also a bona fide beauty queen — she was once crowned Miss Juneteenth, a title commemorating the day slaves in Texas were freed – two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Life didn’t turn out as beautifully as the title promised, but Turquoise, determined to right her wrongs, is cultivating her daughter, Kai, to become Miss Juneteenth, even if Kai wants something else.” (Vertical Entertainment) Click the image below to watch the trailer!
Synopsis for WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? – In-Person Screenings: In the summer of 2018, we opened this quiet and lovely film…and it quickly skyrocketed to becoming our biggest hit of the year and our highest grossing documentary of all time at THE NEON.  We’re bringing it back…because we need Mr. Roger’s wisdom and compassion more than ever. “For over thirty years, Fred Rogers, an unassuming minister, puppeteer, writer and producer was beamed daily into homes across America. In his beloved television program, MISTER ROGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD, Fred and his cast of puppets and friends spoke directly to young children about some of life’s weightiest issues, in a simple, direct fashion. There hadn’t been anything like Mr. Rogers on television before and there hasn’t been since. Though he may be best known today as a soft-spoken, cardigan-wearing children’s television host, in reality, Fred Rogers’ career represents a sustained attempt to present a coherent, beneficent view about how we should best speak to children about important matters and how television could be used as a positive force in our society.” (Focus Features) Click the image below to watch the film’s trailer.

The DAYTON JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL has already nearing an end…how is that possible?  That said, there are still a few films for you to see, and you can gain FREE access to their virtual selections and on-line events! Though we certainly miss hosting this fantastic festival at THE NEON, we think they’ve made a wise decision to move forward virtually this year!! Check out their awesome line-up by clicking the image below!  It’s their 20th anniversary, and they’re making all the screenings and on-line discussions FREE (including talk-backs & comedians)…and it’s very easy to sign up!
Wanna know what’s coming down the road in our virtual cinema? (Click any title to watch that film’s trailer.)  On July 1, we will open a powerful Sundance film about a young Black man exploring his roots and struggling with what it all means – THE LAST TREE.  On July 8, we plan to open ONE SMALL STEP – a collection of animated short films that are family-friendly!  On July 17, we hope to open THE TOBACCONIST – both virtually and in-person – a film I saw and loved at The Cleveland International Film Festival last year. And sometime later in July, we will open a film called CREATING A CHARACTER – a film about a famous Julliard acting instructor who has helped many incredible performers reach greatness.  We’re also hoping to pair this with a community discussion from a handful of directors & performing artists with local ties.

Due to new guidelines for keeping staff and customers healthy during the current crisis, we are in the process of “figuring out” reserved seating.  If you want to sit next to someone, you’ll need to purchase tickets in the same transaction.  The software we are using will automatically block off three seats between parties – so if you buy a single ticket, there’s no chance for someone to sit next to you. If you’re the first person to reserve a seat in a row (on-line or in-person), we ask that you choose a seat that’s on the aisle or along the wall…this will allow us to maximize our capacity.  This is going to be a big learning curve for us – a full house will now be approximately 35% of our actual capacity.

Here is some of what we’re initially doing TO ENSURE THAT STAFF AND GUESTS STAY HEALTHY:
  • Masks are required for all staff and guests except when eating in an auditorium.
  • Our entrance to the building has moved to THE NEON’s patio doors.  This will streamline transactions and separate ticketing from food purchases.  Additional time between screenings will also minimize lobby traffic.
  • Commonly touched surfaces (door handles, will be sanitized every 30 minutes.
  • Floor markers will assist with social distancing, and hand sanitizers are located throughout the lobby.
  • Please arrive before the scheduled showtime.  Seating will begin approximately 40 minutes before each show.
  • In the auditoriums, every other row will be unavailable. Groups may sit together, but 3 seats will be required between parties in each row.
  • We have increased the time between screenings to allow us sufficient time to sanitize the auditoriums.  For additional assurance, seat wipes will also be available for customer use.
  • Please stay home if you have any of the following symptoms: cough, shortness of breath, fever, chills, sore throat or new loss of taste/smell.
After all these weeks and hurdles, we finally have a DONATE button on our website.  If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to our non-profit, please visit this LINK.
We hope to see you soon!
Be safe & well.
My best,
Jonathan

3 New Virtual Treats, ReOpening Film & More News From The Neon

June 10, 2020 By Jonathan McNeal

I appreciate so many of you reaching out with suggestions as to films I should explore or revisit to expand my knowledge of the struggle and inequalities that face Black people in our society — great recommendations like Ryan Coogler’s FRUITVALE STATION, Spike Lee’s 4 LITTLE GIRLS, and Sabaah Folayan’s WHOSE STREETS? I also loved hearing back from so many of you regarding the list of films on my screening list last week.  If you’re looking for a particular film and you can’t seem to easily find it on Netflix or Amazon, there’s a great resource called justwatch.com that can help you find the film in question on-line.

This week, we’re starting three new films in our virtual cinema.  The dark, comedic heist film  LUCKY GRANDMA and the cine-essay YOU DON’T NOMI (about the cult status of the trainwreck-of-a-film SHOWGIRLS) are already available, and the powerful doc FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO will be available starting Friday.  ( Be sure sure to read about our first Virtual Community Discussion.  This on-line discussion with local partners will center around the film FOR THEY KNOW NOW WHAT THEY DO.)  More details are below. We will hold over 1 ANGRY BLACK MAN, PAHOKEE, CORPUS CHRISTI and MR. JONES for one more week.

As I mentioned last Friday, we are targeting early July as our opening date.  If all goes as planned, we will open a terrific, important, and perfect documentary for July 4th weekend – JOHN LEWIS: GOOD TROUBLE.  Check out this trailer when you get a moment!  (I’ll announce our 2nd new film here next week.)
I am looking to fill at least one part-time position.  If you know someone who is at least 21 years old and loves independent cinema and is looking for a little extra money, please send them to this LINK.  In the coming weeks, we may also start looking for some volunteers.  We will have limited seating capacity upon reopen, and I think I may need the help of ushers during our busier times. I’ll keep you posted!

Synopsis for LUCKY GRANDMA: Critics everywhere are loving Tsai Chin’s central performance. “Set in New York’s Chinatown, Chin portrays an ornery, newly-widowed 80-year-old eager to live life as an independent woman, despite her family’s concerns. When a local fortune teller (Wai Ching Ho) predicts a most auspicious day in her future, she decides to head to the casino, only to land herself on the wrong side of luck by suddenly attracting the attention of local gangsters. She then employs the services of a bodyguard from a rival gang. LUCKY GRANDMA is a dynamic comedy with a stand-out performance by Tsai Chin. A new song by Akwafina is also featured.” (Good Deed Entertainment) Jude Dry of indieWire writes, ” LUCKY GRANDMA is a wickedly entertaining dark comedy, steeped in the colors and characters of New York City’s Chinatown.”  And Peter Debruge of VARIETY wrote, ” Chin is plainly the film’s greatest asset, a terrific actor with great comic timing and a tendency to underplay her character’s reactions…” This film can be watched on your computer, mobile device or on your TV via the KinoMarquee app on a variety of sources. Scroll to the bottom of the purchasing page for further details.  Click the image below to watch the trailer and gain 5 day access to the film for $12.

Synopsis for YOU DON’T NOMI: “A chorus of film critics and fervent devotees explore the complicated afterlife of 1995’s biggest film flop, Paul Verhoeven’s salacious SHOWGIRLS, from disastrous release to cult adoration and extraordinary redemption. The film features Adam Nayman (Vice Guide to Film), April Kidwell (I, Nomi) and Peaches Christ (Milk) along with archive interview footage with the cast and crew of SHOWGIRLS.” David Rooney of THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER wrote that the film presents ” a compelling case that the much-maligned pop-culture landmark can be judged as either tawdry rubbish or subversive comic triumph.” And Peter Travers of ROLLING STONE wrote,
” Jeffrey McHale’s feature debut doc is a raucous hoot that also generates a grudging appreciation for the 1995 trashathon that really might be so bad it’s good.” This film will be available to watch on your computer, mobile device and many TVs.  For more details, visit the platforms HELP page.  Click the image below to watch the trailer and gain 72 hour access for $9.99.

Synopsis for FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO: “From the director of the landmark film FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO comes a new documentary that explores the intersection of religion, sexual orientation and gender identity in present day America.” THE ADVOCATE wrote, “In this vital, authentic follow-up to FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO, filmmaker Daniel Karslake returns a decade later to the religious right, embittered by the Supreme Court’s Obergefell decision and emboldened by the rise of Trump. Heartbreaking – and inspirational.”    This film will be available starting this Friday and throughout  the rest of June. On Sunday, June 28 at 5:00, I will host a Community Discussion via Zoom with a variety of Spiritual leaders from around the Miami Valley. Click HERE if you’d like to RSVP  for the Community Discussion. This film will be available to watch on your computer or mobile device and on some SmartTVs.  For more details about how you can watch the film, visit First Run Feature’s HELP page.  Click the image below to watch the trailer and pre-order 72 hour access to the film for $10 .
These films are continuing for one more week!

On June 26, we will open a new doc that I know many of you will love – ELLA FITZGERALD: JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS.  And sometime in early July, we hope to open THE TOBACCONIST – a film I saw and loved at The Cleveland International Film Festival last year. On July 1, we will open a powerful Sundance film about a young Black man exploring his roots and struggling with what it all means – THE LAST TREE.

Neon News:

May 20, 2020 By Jonathan McNeal

We’re gonna move forward with some new films this week, but we will absolutely hold onto DRIVEWAYS for another week – NEON fans have loved it. Jane wrote, “DRIVEWAYS was a great film-we really enjoyed it!”  Richard says it’s an “Excellent film,” and Mickey chimed in with “Oh my goodness Driveways is SUCH a wonderful film!” Stuart told folks that DRIVEWAYS is, “Wonderful, poignant, one of Brian Dennehy’s best performances ever, and highly recommended.”  Thanks to all the folks who help spread the word.  If you missed the Q&A for UP FROM THE STREETS, the terrific doc about the Music of New Orleans, you’re in luck – a second has been added! A LIVE Q&A with Terence Blanchard, director Michael Murphy, and Ben Jaffe, Creative Director of Preservation Hall will take place on May 26 at 9pm ET/6pm PT – here’s the LINK where you sign up for the Free Q&A.  We’ll hold the film for another week, too!
Starting today, because we know how Daytonians have really started to embrace short films over the past few years, we are opening a collection of “petite Gallic pleasures” – NEW FRENCH SHORTS 2020.  On Friday, because we love Kristin Scott Thomas and because Dayton is proud of Wright Patt Air Force Base, we are opening MILITARY WIVES (and it’s just in time for Memorial Day).  In addition, on Friday, we will begin the next in the Magnolia Pictures’ Doc Series – A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE DOCS – where you can send in questions to each of the films’ directors (this week’s selection is LIFE ITSELF)!  (Don’t forget –  Tonight, Wednesday, May 20, is the Q&A for RBG!)
Synopsis for NEW FRENCH SHORTS 2020: “This showcase of some of the most exciting new cinematic voices from France runs the gamut from animation to romance to absurdist comedy. Revel in these petite Gallic pleasures, including award winners from Cannes, Locarno, and Palm Springs ShortFest. New French Shorts 2020 is made available through Young French Cinema, a program of UniFrance and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy. Selections include: Ahmed’s Song (Foued Mansour, 30m), Sheep, Wolf, and a Cup of Tea… (Marion Lacourt, 12m), Tuesday from 8 to 6 (Cecilia de Arce, 26m), The Distance Between Us and the Sky (Vasilis Kekatos, 9m), The Tears Thing (Clémence Poésy, 25m), Magnetic Harvest (Marine Levéel, 24m), Bonus: The Glorious Acceptance Speech of Nicolas Chauvin (Benjamin Crotty, 26m)” This collection of films will be available for viewing on most computers, phones and tablets as well as via apps on AppleTV, Roku and Firestick. Further details are available on the bottom of the official purchasing site. Click the image below to watch the trailer and gain 5 day access to this collection of films for $12.
Synopsis for MILITARY WIVES: Perfect for Memorial Day Weekend! We’re pleased to continue our partnership with Bleecker Street in bringing you their latest release, MILITARY WIVES. From the director of THE FULL MONTY and starring Kristin Scott Thomas (THE ENGLISH PATIENT) and Sharon Horgan (CATASTROPHE), it’s the feel-good movie of the year! “MILITARY WIVES centers on a group of women from different backgrounds whose partners are away serving in Afghanistan. Faced with their loved ones’ absences, they come together to form the very first military wives choir, helping each other through some of life’s most difficult moments, and quickly find themselves on an international stage.” (Bleecker Street) THE DAILY MAIL calls MILITARY WIVES “Hugely engaging, enormously moving.”  Starting May 22, you’ll be able to gain 72 hour access to the film for just $4.99. Click the image below to watch the trailer…the link to purchase the film will be available starting Friday on our website.
MAGNOLIA PICTURES: A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE DOCS is already underway with RBG, and you’ve been invited to ask questions to the directors.  Each Friday, we’ll start a virtual engagement of a great documentary for just $5.00 each.  On the following Wednesday, you can attend a live virtual Q&A with the film’s director – and you’ll be able to submit your own questions in advance. You can either submit them over email to submityourquestion@magpictures.com, or they can tweet at Magnolia by using the hashtag #magnoliadocseries.  Here’s the line-up (click the titles to watch the trailers…the link for RBG and LIFE ITSELF are also where you can gain 72 hour access to each film for $5):
RBG starts on May 15. (Q&A on 5/20 with directors Betsy West and Julie Cohen, moderated by Melena Ryzik from the New York Times)
LIFE ITSELF starts May 22. (Q&A on 5/27 with Chaz Ebert in conversation with director Steve James)
BLACKFISH starts May 29. (Q&A on 6/3 with director Gabriela Cowperthwaite)
HAIL SATAN? starts June 5. (Q&A on 6/10 with director Penny Lane in conversation with Lucien Greaves, head of The Satanic Temple.)
When you purchase access to each film for $5, you will also get invited to that film’s Q&A event and 10% of all the national sales will go to a charity of the filmmaker’s choice.
Due to the uncertainty of the coming weeks/months, the DAYTON JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL has decided to go mostly virtual this June instead of postponing or canceling…and the preview event on June 2 is right around the corner. Though we’ll certainly miss hosting this fantastic festival at THE NEON, we think they’ve made a wise decision!! Check out their awesome line-up by clicking the image below!  It’s their 20th anniversary, and they’re making all the screenings and on-line discussions FREE!!
Wanna know what’s coming down the road? (Click any title to watch that film’s trailer.)  On May 27, foodies will delight in the new documentary DIANA KENNEDY: NOTHING FANCY. Also on the 27th, lovers of classic cinema and film history will adore THE GHOST OF PETER SELLERS. On June 12, we will open the documentary FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO – Daniel Karslake’s follow-up to his film FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO. And sometime in June, we hope to open THE TOBACCONIST – a film I saw and loved at The Cleveland International Film Festival last year.  We’re working to make this a sidebar or encore to the Dayton Jewish Film Festival…and you’ll be invited to participate in a post-screening discussion with yours truly.
There are many other irons in the fire right now, and THE NEON is working hard to make sure that when we’re able to re-open, we can do it as safely as possible. I’ll keep you posted.

NEON Trivia & “Virtually” Playing BOOKSELLERS and BALLOON!

April 22, 2020 By Jonathan McNeal

WOW!  Friday’s “Curbside Candy Clearance & More” was a huge, huge hit.  Some people waited over 90 minutes, and cars were lined up around the block.  Love for THE NEON was pouring in, and we were blown away!  Many, many thanks for all of your support!  (One family was even watching THE WOMAN WHO LOVES GIRAFFES on an i-pad while they waited – BRILLIANT!)  This Friday, we’ve got something completely different for all of you folks with Facebook and Instagram – “TEST YOUR NEON KNOWLEDGE” – NEON Movie Trivia Live!  More details below.
Next up in our “Virtual Cinema” are two new, great films.  The first is for all the book lovers of the world – THE BOOKSELLERS – a wonderful documentary that was executive produced by Parker Posey.  (I love a good bookstore – from the labyrinth of Strand and the charm of Three Lives Books in NYC to our neighborhood treasure Bonnett’s in the Oregon District.)  The second film is a nail-biting political thriller set during the time of the Berlin Wall – BALLOON – and it’s based on a true story!
Synopsis for THE BOOKSELLERS: “Antiquarian booksellers are part scholar, part detective and part businessperson, and their personalities and knowledge are as broad as the material they handle. They also play an underappreciated yet essential role in preserving history. THE BOOKSELLERS takes viewers inside their small but fascinating world, populated by an assortment of obsessives, intellects, eccentrics and dreamers.” (Greenwich Entertainment) Executive produced by Parker Posey. The Hollywood Reporter wrote, “A treat for anyone who appreciates the printed word.”  You can access this film virtually for 72 hours for $9.99.  Just click the image below. A note from this distributor for this particular film: “You can watch on your desktop, tablet, smartphone, Chromecast or AirPlay. If you prefer to watch on another device, check this here before your purchase.”
Synopsis for BALLOON: “In the summer of 1979, the Strelzyk and Wetzel families-who had been working on their audacious plan for more than two years-try to flee East Germany in a self-made hot-air balloon. But after the balloon crash-lands just before the West German border, the Stasi find traces of the attempted escape and immediately launch an investigation. In a nerve-wracking race against the clock, the two families attempt to build a new escape balloon as the Stasi get closer and closer each day…” (Distrib Films) Click the image below to visit the site where you can watch the trailer and then purchase 72 access to the film for $10. A note from the distributor about BALLOON: “You will be able to watch the film for 3 days on any computer, laptop, ipad, chromebook or other mobile devices. IMPORTANT: The only way to watch this film on a television is to mirror or cast from one of the above devices to your television.”  (I watched this one with an HDMI cable from my computer to my television.)
And for one more week, we’ll continue to offer THE WOMAN WHO LOVES GIRAFFES and THE TIMES OF BILL CUNNINGHAM.  Visit our website – www.neonmovies.com – for all the details!
Wanna know what’s coming down the road? (click any title to watch that film’s trailer)  On 4/29, we’ll open a film I saw and loved at The Cleveland International Film Festival last year – WHAT SHE SAID: THE ART OF PAULINE KAEL.  This terrific documentary is for anyone who loves the movies.  In addition, we will open a documentary that many of you will be excited about – THE DOG DOC.  We’ll be partnering with and donating $1 of every download to a really special organization – Ellie’s Rainy Day Fund – which works through veterinary request to support families that would otherwise be in danger of losing their beloved furry family members to veterinary emergencies they cannot afford to treat. To learn about Ellie’s Rainy Day Fund, please visit https://elliesrainydayfund.org/.  On May 6, we are slated to open 2 more films.  The first is a truly inspiring documentary about a high school where 91% of the students qualify for free lunch and where 90% graduate each year – PAHOKEE.  In addition, we’ll open a smart, rapid-fire comedy that moves at the pace of those beloved Golden Age comedies like HIS GIRL FRIDAY and BRINGING UP BABY – STRAIGHT UP.
Thanks to our friends at Row House Cinema, you have a chance to make your cats the stars they were meant to be! “Now that we are all quarantined at home with our cats, let us use this time to raise money for independent cinemas across the country. Videos selected will be joined with others, becoming the QUARANTINE CAT FILM FESTIVAL. THE NEON will sell tickets to the film, and receive 50% of the net proceeds. With your help, we are hoping cats will help to save independent movie theaters through this unprecedented quarantine. The videos will be judged in four categories: Cutest, Funniest, Bravest, and Most Loving. There will be a Best Of Show award as well. The videos will be judged by cat experts who are very opinionated. The cash prize amounts will be determined closer to the film’s release…Winners will be notified before the release of the film and identified in the film.” (Row House Cinema) Here’s the LINK with all the details!
Over the past few weeks, many have reached out and asked how you can help during our time of closure…and we truly appreciate your support!  One great way you can help is by spreading the word about our virtual offerings!  90% of the films we will offer virtually are not available on any other platform.  Please send people to our website, urge them to sign up for our newsletter and encourage them to enjoy one of our curated films.  And because we are now a non-profit, there’s another way you can help – by making a donation.  And your gifts are tax deductible! If you’d like to make a donation to THE NEON, we’ll certainly put it to good use – just mail a check to THE NEON, 130 E 5th St., Dayton, OH  45402.  We’ll make sure you get a receipt for your records.  One of our customers requested that his employer match his donation – very cool!…so we are now set up with Benevity (a platform that many large companies use to match charitable donations).  And as of late last year, we are also set up with The Dayton Foundation under “Dayton Movies dba The Neon.”
A Note About Our Virtual Offerings! It’s hard to believe that one month ago, offering films virtually wasn’t even something we had considered.  But many indie distributors stepped up very quickly and began to figure out ways to help us maintain a bit of revenue during these tricky times.  Each distributor comes with a different set of rules and prices, and all of us are learning a lot in the process of exploring multiple platforms.  Please know that you can always view the film from your browser (on your PC, laptop or ipad), and in most circumstances there are ways to access the media on your TV (via an app, syncing your wireless device with your TV, and more).  I’m a little “old fashioned”…I still hook an HDMI cable from my laptop to my TV – just like a bluray player (it works great).
And here’s the special news for Friday.  I’ll be on Facebook Live & Instagram Live on Friday, April 24 at 4:00 with a game where you can win prizes – TEST YOUR NEON KNOWLEDGE!  I’ll ask a series of 15 trivia questions, and you can email in your answers by 10pm on Friday night to theneon@msn.com. Winners will be revealed on Saturday afternoon. You can find us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/neonmovies and here’s our instagram handle: @neonmovies – I hope to see many of you there!
Wishing you all good health!
My best,
Jonathan

News from The Neon

November 26, 2019 By Jonathan McNeal

Neon Movies on Fifth Street

In the past few days, we’ve made some big decisions as to our plans for the next several weeks.  Some of our upcoming films have local connections, some are certain to be best picture contenders, and many are full of stars we love to see on screen.  One thing is clear about each – it’s Oscar season!

On Friday, we will open PAIN AND GLORY – the latest film from my favorite director of all time – Pedro Almodóvar.  Almost certain to garner a “Best International Feature Film” nomination, this one could go even further and possibly get a nod for Antonio Banderas and production design, too.  It’s truly gorgeous, and Penelope Cruz is luminous.  On our other screen, we will hold onto the stunning film from Bong Joon Ho – PARASITE – which is certain to be a big contender this year.   And just for the weekend, we will hold JOJO RABBIT for a few shows as well as bring back the much-loved HARRIET for a handful of screenings.  There is truly something for everyone this holiday weekend!
Synopsis for PAIN AND GLORY: Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film is his best in years.  Don’t miss this visually exciting (and part auto-biographical) story with stellar performances. “PAIN AND GLORY tells of a series of reencounters experienced by Salvador Mallo, a film director in his physical decline. Some of them in the flesh, others remembered: his childhood in the 60s, when he emigrated with his parents to a village in Valencia in search of prosperity, the first desire, his first adult love in the Madrid of the 80s, the pain of the breakup of that love while it was still alive and intense, writing as the only therapy to forget the unforgettable, the early discovery of cinema, and the void, the infinite void that creates the incapacity to keep on making films. PAIN AND GLORY talks about creation, about the difficulty of separating it from one’s own life and about the passions that give it meaning and hope. In recovering his past, Salvador finds the urgent need to recount it, and in that need he also finds his salvation.” (Sony Classics) Click the image below to visit the film’s official site.
Sponsored by The Dayton Holiday Festival, Mix 107.7 and THE NEON, The Family Holiday Film Series starts in less than 2 weeks.  THE WIZARD OF OZwill screen on Saturday, Dec. 7 at Noon, A CHRISTMAS STORY will screen on Saturday, Dec. 14 at Noon, and THE GRINCH (2018) will screen Saturday, Dec. 21 at Noon.  Tickets are FREE for children 12 and under and only $2 for anyone over 12.  These tickets will become available at 11:15am on the day of each screening, and they are limited to one ticket per person (aka: everyone must be present in order to pick up tickets – we can’t hold or disperse tickets for people who are not at the theater – thank you for your understanding).
Have you seen the nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards?  (This is the huge awards program that celebrates independent cinema.)  We’ve played so many of this year’s nominees – including Julia Reichert & Steve Bognar’s AMERICAN FACTORY and Chase Whiteside & Erick Stoll’s AMÉRICA!  Many congrats to these local connections (all with ties to Wright State University)!!  Also included in the nominees we’ve played are: LAST BLACK MAN IN SAN FRANCISCO, THE SOUVENIR, PARASITE, RETABLO (part of The Dayton LGBT Film Festival last year), WILD NIGHTS WITH EMILY (also part of The Dayton LGBT Film Festival last year), APOLLO 11, HONEYLAND, THE FAREWELL, JUDY & THE MUSTANG.  On December 20, we will open GIVE ME LIBERTY – which was just nominated for 4 of these awards.  This fantastic film was line-produced by Dayton’s own Karri O’Reilly!
In last week’s newsletter, I detailed a lot of the local connections associated with DARK WATERS…including my minor involvement.  It was truly special to be on a set where I was seeing so many old friends (and even a couple former students) making it all happen.  I’m currently working with Karri O’Reilly (who served as a production supervisor on the film) to assemble a small group of people for a talk-back to follow the screening on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 4:30.  DARK WATERS opens on Thursday, Dec. 5, and tickets for all of the opening weekend shows are now available on our website and in person at our box office.
Julia Reichert has been in the news a lot lately.  It was just announced that she will receive the “Women of Influence” honor from the YWCA, and the film she made with Steve Bognar – AMERICAN FACTORY – continues to be a major conversation piece in film communities, at world-renowned museums, on prestigious college campuses, and with policy-makers. It’s exciting that such an important film came from our backyard. Julia & Steve’s next film – 9 TO 5: THE STORY OF A MOVEMENT – will be part of our “Women of Influence In The Movies” series in March. I’ll have more details about this collaboration with The Human Race Theatre Company early next year.
We made some big decisions. The following is our current, anticipated slate for the next several weeks. Click any title to watch that film’s trailer.  On Dec 5, we open Todd Haynes’ new political thriller (set and shot in Cincinnati based on true events) – DARK WATERS (with lots of WSU and Dayton talent). On Dec 13 we open THE TWO POPES – a veritable acting masterclass with Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce. On Dec 20, we open GIVE ME LIBERTY – a film with local ties that just garnered 4 Independent Spirit Award nominations.  On Dec 25, we’ll open 3 films – Greta Gerwig’s exhilarating and gorgeous adaptation of LITTLE WOMEN as well as the much-anticipated film THE IRISHMAN (directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and many more) and MARRIAGE STORY (written and directed by Noah Baumbach and starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver). On Jan 3, we’ll open A HIDDEN LIFE – Terrence Malick’s new masterpiece.

It’s going to be quite a season!
Many thanks for all of your continued support!
Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving,
Jonathan

Sally Field’s DORIS & Star-Studded Malick Film Open Friday at THE NEON!

March 23, 2016 By Jonathan McNeal

rs_634x939-151119112930-634-hello-my-name-is-doris-posterHello Everyone,

We’re cleaning house this week! If you need to see HITCHCOCK/TRUFFAUT, MUSTANG, SON OF SAUL or LADY IN THE VAN, Thursday will be your last chance to catch them at THE NEON. On Friday, we’ll begin a film that many of you have expressed excitement about – HELLO, MY NAME IS DORIS – starring Sally Field. In addition, we’ll begin a film by master filmmaker Terrence Malick with a star-studded cast – KNIGHT OF CUPS.

Synopsis for HELLO, MY NAME IS DORIS: “When Doris Miller meets John Fremont, her company’s hip new art director, sparks fly-at least for Doris. In the cluttered house she shared with her late mother, Doris mines the Internet for information on her one-and-only, guided by the 13-year-old granddaughter of her best pal Roz. When Doris begins showing up at John’s regular haunts, she wins over his Williamsburg friends. Her new life brings Doris a thrilling perspective, but also creates a rift between her and her longtime friends and family, who believe she’s making a fool of herself over a guy half her age. Eager for all the experiences she has missed out on, Doris throws caution to the wind and follows her heart for the very first time.” VARIETY wrote, “A showstopper. Sally Field shines.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pdn-CcRypo8

Synopsis for KNIGHT OF CUPS: “Knight of Cups follows writer Rick (Christian Bale) on an odyssey through the playgrounds of Los Angeles and Las Vegas as he undertakes a search for love and self. Even as he moves through a desire-laden landscape of mansions, resorts, beaches and clubs, Rick grapples over complicated relationships with his brother (Wes Bentley) and father (Brian Dennehy). His quest to break the spell of his disenchantment takes him on a series of adventures with six alluring women: rebellious Della (Imogen Poots); his physician ex-wife, Nancy (Cate Blanchett); a serene model Helen (Freida Pinto); a woman he wronged in the past Elizabeth (Natalie Portman); a spirited, playful stripper Karen (Teresa Palmer); and an innocent Isabel (Isabel Lucas), who helps him see a way forward. Rick moves in a daze through a strange and overwhelming dreamscape — but can he wake up to the beauty, humanity and rhythms of life around him? The deeper he searches, the more the journey becomes his destination.” THE VILLAGE VOICE wrote, “KNIGHT OF CUPS might be both the most intoxicating film [Malik] has ever made-a deluge of gorgeous, kinetic images and sounds-and, in some ways, the most perplexing.” Click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL & Important Parking News at THE NEON

Hello Everyone.

A new, wonderful film that has garnered amazing critical response is now playing at THE NEON – THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL. In addition, we are holding the incredible film with Jason Segel – THE END OF THE TOUR as well as our biggest hit of 2015 – MR. HOLMES. To read more about our held-over titles, please visit our website at www.neonmovies.com.

Synopsis for THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL: “Like most teenage girls, Minnie Goetze (Bel Powley) is longing for love, acceptance and a sense of purpose in the world. Minnie begins a complex love affair with her mother’s (Kristen Wiig) boyfriend, “the handsomest man in the world,” Monroe (Alexander Skarsgard). What follows is a sharp, funny and provocative account of one girl’s sexual and artistic awakening, without judgment.” (taken from Sony Classics) Given 100% reviews from The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Washington Post and many more. Entertainment Weekly wrote, “…there are moments you’ll ache for Minnie and other ones where you’ll want to lock her away – it rings much truer than most coming-of-age stories.” Peter Travers of Rolling Stone wrote, “Powley is sensational, expertly blending hilarity and heartbreak. Her scenes with Wiig, sublime in her hard-won gravity, are unique and unforgettable. Just like the movie.” Click this LINK to visit the film’s official website.

The Deaf Community Resource Center is bringing a special, one-time screening of THE DEAF CLUB to town on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7:30. This movie is completely done in sign language (though subtitles are available for those who don’t sign). “Deaf people have it all – friends, romance, fights, etc. – at their own club, where everyone uses sign language. Suddenly, the members face a situation where their precious club may have to close. Can they save the deaf club? Almost the entire production team is deaf or hard of hearing.” (taken from press notes) Tickets, just $10 each, will be available at THE NEON’s box office beginning Monday, Aug 24.

On Saturday, September 26 at Noon, Twentig, Inc. will host a special benefit screening and discussion of the film BELLE.” BELLE is a historical fictionalization of a true story about Dido Elizabeth Belle who was born of mixed race in the West Indies. She lived with her great uncle William Murray, the first Earl of Mansfield, Lord Chief Justice of England. Lord Mansfield’s decision on a case in 1786 in the English Courts led to the abolition of slavery in Britain. The film was inspired by the 1779 painting of Belle beside her cousin Lady Elizabeth Murray at Kenwood House.” (taken from press notes) Tickets are $30 each and come with admission to the film, the post-film discussion, a glass of wine and popcorn.

As many of you have noticed, we now share our parking lot with Drake’s Gym (a boxing and CrossFit gym now located in the former Greyhound building). This Saturday, the gym is hosting a big fundraising boxing match in our shared parking lot. This means that parking will not be available in that lot all day on Saturday. Please remember that we do validate for the Convention Center Parking Lot on Saturdays…so give yourselves a little extra time to find parking if you’re coming to see a film on Saturday afternoon/evening.

Thanks for your continued support.
We hope to see you this weekend!

I’LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS With Blythe Danner & Sam Elliott Opens at THE NEON

June 17, 2015 By Jonathan McNeal

isyimd-poster-final-1Hello Everyone,

As planned, we’re moving forward this weekend with a film that many of you are anticipating. The trailer for I’LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS has been causing a lot of laughs and even some swoons (I had no idea that Sam Elliott had such a fan base)! LOVE & MERCY was a hit this weekend, and it will stick around. If you still need to see FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD or LAMBERT AND STAMP, you only have until Thursday to catch them at THE NEON. For this week’s remaining showtimes (they’re different than the upcoming week – which are listed below), please visit our website at www.neonmovies.com

Synopsis for I’LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS: Currently rated “94% Fresh” on rotten tomatoes.com! “In this vibrant, funny, and heartfelt film, a widow and former songstress discovers that life can begin anew at any age. With the support of three loyal girlfriends (June Squibb, Rhea Perlman, and Mary Kay Place), Carol (Blythe Danner) decides to embrace the world, embarking on an unlikely friendship with her pool maintenance man (Martin Starr), pursuing a new love interest (Sam Elliott), and reconnecting with her daughter (Malin Akerman).” (taken from Bleecker Street) Click on this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Don’t forget that we still have tickets to the crowd-pleasing documentary TAB HUNTER CONFIDENTIAL. It screens this Thursday (June 18) at 7:30. Tickets are just $8.

Director Kevin Nam will be debuting his first short film this Monday, June 22 at 8pm. “What if you were given a chance to traverse your own subconscious? Would you be afraid of what you may see? We all have our demons kept at bay buried under the lies we tell ourselves. Keaton, a heartbroken man, is given this chance to reshape and reform his memories. With the help of Dr. Darren Vonnuxley at Entropy’s Enlightenment, Keaton is plunged deep into his own subconscious, where he must confront and conquer his demon, face to face. HOW TO MURDER YOUR MELANCHOLY is a short dark psychological drama with horror elements filmed entirely in the Dayton, Ohio region. This one and only screening of the short film is the directorial debut of local resident Kevin Nam. The director requires a mature audience due to scenes of graphic violence, blood, and gore. The director will also be in attendance for a brief Q & A immediately following the film. Please arrive early, screening will promptly begin at 8 pm. Tickets are on a first-come first-serve basis. Admission is FREE.” (taken from Kevin Nam’s press notes)

Single Payer Action Network Ohio (SPAN Ohio) and Doctors for America are proud to host a screening of the powerful documentary REMOTE AREA MEDICAL. During the U.S. debate about healthcare reform, the media failed to put a human face on what it means to not have access to healthcare. Over three days in April 2012, Remote Area Medical, the pioneers of “no-cost” healthcare clinics, treated nearly 2,000 patients on the infield of Bristol, Tennessee’s massive NASCAR speedway. REMOTE AREA MEDICAL affords us an insider’s perspective on the ebb and flow of the event. It is the extraordinary stories of the patients, desperate for medical attention, that create a lasting impression about the state of modern healthcare in America. Admission is free and open to the public. A panel discussion will be held after the movie with local physicians and health policy advocates. The film will screen on Sunday, July 12 at 3pm. Tickets will be given on a first come, first serve basis on the day of the screening.

Thanks for your continued support.
We hope to see you this weekend!
