Celebrate Bike Month with Link: Dayton Bike Share and Thompson Hine

Bike Miami Valley’s Link: Dayton Bike Share program is kicking off Bike Month with a great new addition to its bike fleet thanks to the law firm of Thompson Hine. Thompson Hine is sponsoring eight bikes in the system, and one of those bikes is wrapped with a custom design by Thompson Hine’s graphics team.

Thompson Hine works in partnership with various non-profit organizations to help them achieve their goals and define their missions. A good example is the firm’s partnership with Bike Miami Valley, whose mission is to advocate, promote, and create opportunities for cycling in our region. Dayton Partner, Jonathan Hawkins, has been a member of the Bike Miami Valley board since 2011 and was a critical player in bringing the Bike Share program to life for the Dayton community.

Christine M. Haaker, partner-in-charge of the Dayton office, commented, “We are proud of Jonathan’s commitment and pleased to join other community partners to help Bike Miami Valley achieve its goal of providing bike-sharing services to those who live in and visit the City alike. Our contribution to the Link program now includes eight Thompson Hine branded bikes and reflects our commitment to Bike Miami Valley’s mission and the continuing expansion of great City offerings. We hope to see our bikes en route, providing riders enjoyment and easy access to transportation.”

In 2021, the Link: Dayton Bike Share Program expanded, adding ten new bike parking and pick-up locations, known as “hubs.” Users are invited to take advantage of the new locations and check-out the Thompson Hine bikes, using the Link Dayton app. Users can also participate in Link Bingo this month to win prizes while they ride. Participants do not need to register to participate in the bingo challenge, and bingo cards are available for download at Linkdayton.org. “Taking a trip on the specially wrapped Thompson Hine bike will be a bingo square to fill,” says Laura Estandia, Executive Director of Bike Miami Valley. “We hope our users enjoy this cool ride!”

Lock 27 Release Two New Beers

Lock 27  Brewing is releasing two new beers today inspired and crafted for Cinco de Mayo, these new brews are available on tap in our brewpubs for a limited time!
Mexican Lager
To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, they are releasing a traditional Mexican Lager using yeast straight from Mexico City.
While most other US craft breweries take inspiration for Mexican brews from a certain light beer with lime often found on beaches, Lock 27 looked to Modelo Negra for inspiration when crafting the perfect Cinco de Mayo Lager. The nutty flavor notes with hints of caramel create a flavorful darker beer and easily drinkable brew. This beer has been properly lagered for over a month, giving us that beautiful crisp, clean lager finish.
ABV – 5.5%
IBU – 22
Margarita Gose
The brew team got a little creative with this lime-packed sour beer, getting this brew as close to the classic lime margarita that a beer can get. Margarita Gose is loaded with lime juice and puree, orange peel, and a touch of agave nectar – finished with coriander and Himalayan pink salt, for the ultimate margarita flavor!
ABV – 5.5%
IBU – 10

XACT presents “May 4th Voices”

THESE SHINING LIVES chronicles the strength and determination of women considered expendable in their day, exploring their true story and its continued resonance. Catherine and her friends are dying, it’s true; but theirs is a story of survival in its most transcendent sense, as they refuse to allow the company that stole their health to kill their spirits—or endanger the lives of those who come after them.

Gulzar’s Indian Cuisine Opens Thursday

Deepika amongst the construction.

Downtown Daytonians have long cried for Indian food downtown and now Gulzar’s will fill that niche!

In March of 2020 AJ and Deepika Singh  signed a least to open Gulzar’s on Patterson Street across from the ballpark.  They anticipated opening in the summer of 2020.  And then the pandemic and all plans were put on hold.  And now after long delays to get the building supplies they needed, they are ready to open! Deepika took time to chat with us, as she was surrounded with electricians working on wiring and in the process of bringing the register system online.

Featuring a Northern Indian cuisine they will offer a lunch buffet weekdays for $13.99 and menu entrees at dinner, beginning on Thursday, May 5th.  This is the 2nd Gulzar’s location, the other one is in Richmond Indiana, which opened in 2015.  In fact is was one of their Richmond customers that suggested this location, after AJ and partner Jay had been looking in the Dayton area for a while.  Deepika shared with us that they “knew within 15 minutes of seeing this site it was the one.” The restaurant can seat about 70 guests.

The family has a long history of running restaurants,  Deepika grew up  in India as part of a family business, serving Indian food.  Then a family friend sponsored her father to come be the head chef at an eatery in Cincinnati.  And while she often cooks at home, her Dad will do most of the cooking at the Dayton location. She says he is especially known for his Karai dishes – which blend three sauces cooked with ginger, garlic, onions, and pepper as a base. In Indian food its all about the curry and gravy’s are the foundation for each dish and then flavors are built from there.

Gulzar’s Karai

Because each dish is made fresh when you  order it each dish is easily customizable, which can  makes it’s menu very friendly to vegans, those that eat gluten-free or any other allergies.  Their menu is vast and even includes many lamb and goat options.

Deppika shared that their restaurant is know for their “service and family ambiance. It’s so much more than just making money, we love to gather,  share good food and family is everything.”

Still to come, the patio and the liquor license, and then an official Grand Opening, but in the meantime head on in and enjoy!
