Airness: A Play About The World of Competitive Air Guitar.

October 17, 2021 By Dayton937

According to the Urban Dictionary, “airness” is the extent to which an air guitar performance transcends the medium and becomes a higher form of artistic expression.  The Human Race Theatre Company continues its 35th year with Chelsea Marcantel’s award-winning play Airness, the story of a young guitar player’s introduction to the unique and intense world of competitive air guitar.  But even more, it’s about being true to yourself, letting go of your inhibitions, accepting people for who they are and finding the Rockstar locked deep inside yourself.  Airness will light up the Loft stage, October 21 – November 7, 2021.

“We have had our eyes on this play since it rocked the 2017 Humana Festival at Actors Theatre of Louisville” states Human Race Artistic Director and Founding Member, Kevin Moore.  “It went on to win the American Theatre Critics Association’s New Play Award in 2018.  This story of an underdog triumphing – with the help of a community of fellow underdogs – is a perfect way to spend an evening in the theatre.”

Set in a series of dive bars and performance venues (designed by Human Race regular and native Daytonian, Dick Block), our young heroine Nina is taken in by a group of misfits who guide her through the world of air guitar competitions.  She learns the “six pillars” on which she will be judged:  artistic merit, originality, feeling, technical ability, charisma and the elusive quality of airness.  Through classic rock guitar riffs and offstage dramedy, we follow Nina’s journey to achieve “airness.”

Human Race Resident Artist and Director Jamie Cordes, who previously directed the sensational musicalLizzie,  has assembled a powerful cast of familiar and new faces.  The cast includes:  Andrew Ian Adams (Avenue Q) as “Golden Thunder;”  Allison Kelly (Red-Blooded All-American Man) as “The Nina;”  James Roselli (Play It By Heart) as “The Announcer;”  Zack Steele (Mame, Sweeney Todd) as “Shreddy Eddy;”  and Drew Vidal (The Glass Menagerie) as “Facebender.” Making their Human Race debuts:  Reanne Acasio as “Cannibal Queen” and Rasell Holt as “D Vicious.”  Production Stage Manager is Jacquelyn Duncan;  Costume Design by Janet G. Powell;  Scenic Design by Dick Block;  Lighting Design by John Rensel;  Sound Design by Jay Brunner.

Airness will play in the Loft Theatre in downtown Dayton, October 21 – November 7, 2021.  Tickets are on sale through Dayton Live box office, 937-228-3630, or online at www.humanracetheatre.org  Following local mandates set by the City of Dayton and Dayton Live, all audiences must show proof of vaccination or a recent negative Covid-19 test, and all are required to wear masks.  Details can be found on our website.

Blessid Union of Souls

October 17, 2021 By Dayton937

90’s kids unite as Blessid Union of Souls comes to the Sorg Opera House!  Emerging from the Cincinnati music scene in the 1990’s, Blessid Union of Souls became one of the most commercially successful bands ever from the area.  They have released six studio albums, charting an impressive seven top 40 songs, five of which cracked the top 20.  Three of those were top 10’s, and one (“I Believe”) climbed all the way to number 1!  They have an RIAA certified Gold album as well as a Gold single, and have been featured in many movie soundtracks and TV shows.

Their optimistic and spiritual outlook mixes influences of contagious pop, alternative rock, and soul to create a truly unique and catchy sound.  Singer Eliot Sloan’s thought-provoking songwriting and the band’s extremely dedicated and loyal fan base led them to being one of the most popular acts on adult alternative radio in the mid 90’s, and their influence persists still today.  After traveling the world over the course of two decades, Blessid Union of Souls comes back home and brings their show to the Sorg stage.  Don’t miss your chance to see this influential alternative act live at the Sorg!

Doing Something. Period.

October 15, 2021 By Dayton937

A routine trip to the grocery store prompted three local high school students to start Femme Aid Collaborative after witnessing a woman in front of them struggling with period poverty. Today the volunteer-run organization officially hit a milestone; they have collected and delivered over 1 million menstrual hygiene pieces to local charities in Montgomery County in less than three years.

Femme Aid Collaborative makes a measurable difference with its continued focus on collecting and distributing menstrual hygiene products. A lack of products is one of the hidden consequences of poverty. The average person uses six products a day throughout their cycle, adding up to almost 40 per cycle. Providing access to essential monthly menstrual hygiene products enables menstruators worry-free period days and the ability to participate fully in daily life during their cycle.

“2021 presented us with new challenges, some of which could have ultimately shut down our operations. We had ongoing pressure from the pandemic, decreases in donations with increased product requests, double-digit increases on our per-case pricing for purchased products, along with supply chain issues, etc. However, we didn’t stop, and we went forth with a more intense focus and purpose than when we started three years ago. We looked for new and innovative ways to meet the monthly demand, and delivering the 1 MILLION product pieces today is a huge milestone for the organization.” April Mescher, Executive Director, Femme Aid Collaborative

Co-founders Zoe, Dana and Ryann

Cofounders Ryann Mescher, Dana Clark, and Zoe Waller continue to tackle Period Poverty in Montgomery County head-on. “Providing monthly menstrual hygiene supplies to local nonprofits is our way of not sitting still but doing something to help people in our community who need these products. The numbers speak for themselves. We could never have imagined delivering a million pieces when we started! Dayton is capable of amazing things. We want to thank every person who has contributed to this mission, every dollar, every tampon and pad, every like and share on social media, and using your voice to raise awareness of this issue. Together we can end period poverty in our community.” Ryann Mescher, cofounder

“We love receiving feminine products from Femme Aid because we do not regularly receive them as donations from the community, and we do not have the budget to purchase them ourselves. This regular donation from Femme Aid allows us to provide our female clients with the hygiene products they need free of charge. It benefits our community more than you know!” Lee Truesdale, Chief Development Officer, The Food Bank Dayton

Find all supporting partner locations and charities at www.FemmeAid.com.

“Our generous donor community makes it possible for us to continue this work. We help each other in a time of need. Whether dropping off menstrual hygiene products in the bins or making a monetary donation to purchase products together, we can end period poverty in Dayton. We are Dayton Strong.” Zoe Waller

Monetary donations can be made through The Dayton Foundation’s Femme Aid fund #8298 by mailing a check or online at FemmeAid.com. 100% of the donations go to purchasing menstrual hygiene products for people in need.

RTA Unveils First Two Community Buses In “Proudly Serving” Project

October 11, 2021 By Dayton937

The Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority (RTA) is paying special tribute to the communities in Montgomery County it proudly serves with its “Proudly Serving” project, showcasing points of interest in various cities where its buses travel. The project officially kicks-off today, Oct. 11, with the debut of RTA’s first two buses: Kettering and Trotwood.

This project is the culmination of a vision RTA CEO Bob Ruzinsky had more than a year ago to honor the communities the agency serves, and how its buses can connect people to these places.

“Too often in our busy lives we overlook the great places all around us in the communities we each call home,” Ruzinsky said.  “These buses will highlight some of the great places in these diverse communities, and, we hope, foster increased community pride throughout Montgomery County.”

Each bus design was carefully crafted to emphasize points of interest in a specific community where the RTA takes riders. To capture these locations, RTA worked with a professional photographer to collect high-resolution photos of about 130 public locations around Montgomery County. The creativity doesn’t stop there, as the buses also feature a fun fact, estimated population, and the year the city or township was founded.

City leaders from Kettering and Trotwood were honored to be the first communities represented in the “Proudly Serving” project.

Trotwood has an interesting fact of its own: it is the only city in the United States named “Trotwood.” It was named after “Betsy Trotwood,” a character from Charles Dickens’ “David Copperfield.” That fun fact is featured on the side of the city’s striking blue bus, along with pictures of the Trotwood Government Building, Trotwood-Madison High School, Trotwood Track and Field, Community and Cultural Arts Center, Iams Homestead Museum, and the Trotwood-Madison Park Playground.

“It feels good to be included. I realize we are the first of two (RTA is) starting out with, and it’s good to be first,” said Yvette Page, council member for Trotwood’s 2nd ward. “Most important is the vision of RTA and the collaboration of the RTA and the city of Trotwood, and that we are both here to serve the community.”

“Greater Dayton RTA kept this under wraps (pun intended) for over a year to surprise all of us with a unique way to honor the communities they serve,” stated City Manager Mark Schwieterman. “The truth is, this gesture reminds us of the terrific services RTA offers communities. We are humbled by the planning, coordination, and research that went into this project specific to each community. Residents will recognize things about their hometown on the buses and perhaps learn something new as well. Our sentiment is ‘Kettering is home,’ and this RTA initiative certainly enhances that feeling.”

RTA’s Kettering bus features colors associated with the city in addition to well-known places such as: Kettering Recreation Complex, Fraze Pavilion, Kettering Government Center, Polen Farm and Wenzler Park. There’s also a special nod to Bart Simpson on the side of the bus, connecting to Kettering’s fun fact that Nancy Cartwright, a Kettering native, is the voice of the character on “The Simpsons.”

In total, there will be 22 buses highlighting the different communities served by RTA’s traditional big bus service. The agency intends to roll-out at least one bus a month over the next year. This is just one of the many ways RTA is proudly serving the communities of Montgomery County.

For more information on the RTA and how it connects you to the communities of Montgomery County, visit www.iriderta.org.
