Which truck will take home the $10K grand prize at Saturday’s Springfield Rotary Food Truck Competition?!

September 7, 2021 By Dayton937

After having to cancel last year’s event, the Springfield Rotary Gourmet Food Truck Competition is back for a seventh year, featuring palate-pleasing mobile cuisine and live entertainment in an environment that is fun for all ages. The community-favorite event will run from 11am to 9:30pm Saturday, Sept. 11 at Veterans Park in Springfield.

“We are pleased to be able to bring this charitable event back to Springfield this year,” said Eddie Bell, Rotary member and Food Truck Competition marketing committee chair. “It is an amazing way to bring the community together to make a difference. The best part about this event is that 100 percent of the proceeds go toward various causes, including services to people with disabilities and scholarships.”

The 30 food trucks competing this year have a wide variety of cuisines that are all gourmet and stand out in their own unique way, with the ultimate goal of winning the $10,000 grand prize. From Mexican, Asian, Latin, Mediterranean, Peruvian, Puerto Rican, South African and Creole choices, to gourmet sandwiches, BBQ, waffles, seafood, and sweet treats and desserts, the trucks lining the park’s pathway will cure any craving while creating new ones along the way. The Springfield Food Truck mobile app features the entire list of trucks participating, along with all other event information.

In addition to the $10,000 grand prize, a $5,000 runner-up and $2,000 third-place prize will be decided by a panel of five local professional chefs and at least five roving anonymous volunteer judges. Chef judges for this year’s competition feature an all-Springfield-based panel including:

  • Micah Berner, owner of Cecil and Lime
  • Chef Lisa Freeman, head chef and co-owner of Le Torte Dolci Bakery
  • Chef Clayton Horrighs, of Speakeasy Ramen
  • Chef Doug McGregor, owner of Seasons Kitchen
  • Chef Troy Wheat, of All Seasons Catering

All attendees can also vote via the Springfield Food Truck mobile app throughout the competition for their favorite food truck to receive the $1,000 “People’s Choice” award. All winners will be announced on stage at approximately 4:45 pm.

Live entertainment throughout the duration of the event starts at 11 a.m. with the marquee college football matchup of the weekend between Ohio State and Oregon shown on a jumbotron, and will continue through 9:30pm with three Ohio-based musical acts on stage including Factory Line at 3:30 pm, The Repeating Arms at 5:15 pm and Red Idle Rejects at 8:15 pm. View the complete entertainment schedule here.

“We encourage attendees to come early, bring their lawn chairs and blankets, and stick around all day for the entertainment and to enjoy all the gourmet treats the competition has to offer,” said Bell.

While admission to the event is free, attendees will be able to make donations to help support Springfield Rotary’s causes via PayPal during the event, and will be purchasing items from the full menus that food trucks have to offer. A beer garden open throughout the event will feature craft beer from Springfield’s Mother Stewart’s Brewery, Michelob Ultra, Budweiser and Bud Light, as well as White Claw. Water and a selection of soda will also be available.

9/11 Never Forget Exhibit Comes To Troy

September 7, 2021 By Dayton937

In 2013, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation launched its 9/11 NEVER FORGET Mobile Exhibit; a tribute to all those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, including the 343 members of the Fire Department of New York City (FDNY) who made the ultimate sacrifice. The high-tech, 83-foot tractor-trailer, which transforms into a 1,100 square foot exhibit, is a tool to further educate people across the country about the events of that tragic day.

Coming to Troy,  the memorial provides interactive education; including artifacts such as steel beams from the towers, documentary videos, and recordings of first responder radio transmissions. Interactive guided tours are carried out by FDNY firefighters who provide firsthand accounts of the day and its aftermath.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is committed to ensuring we NEVER FORGET.

Tunnels to Towers Foundation has chosen Troy, Ohio as the recipient of the 9/11 NEVER FORGET MOBILE EXHIBIT. The exhibit will be located in front of the Miami County Courthouse. Free admission.
Friday, Sept 10 – 1-9pm
Saturday, Sept 11 – 1-9pm

The National Fallen Firefighters 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

September 4, 2021 By Dayton937

The NFFF 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs is a way to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters who selflessly gave their lives so that others might live on September 11, 2001. Each participant pays tribute to a FDNY firefighter by climbing the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Your individual tribute not only remembers the sacrifice of a FDNY brother, but symbolically completes their heroic  journey to save others. Through firefighter and community participation we can ensure that each of the 343 firefighters is honored and that the world knows we will never forget.

Tippapalooza Music Fest Is Saturday

September 1, 2021 By Dayton937

To celebrate our 10th year we made an effort to bring back fan favorites who have played our festival to great success and helped to build the event into what it is today. Our headline act is Tippapalooza favorites Seth Canan & the Carriers returning for their third appearance on our stage. The Neo American Pioneers will be back for a repeat of their stellar 2018 performance. Sadbox will be bringing their raucous brand of rock and roll to Tippapalooza for a second time. And although The Boxcar Suite will be making their first appearance, their leader Tim Pritchard, is a veteran of our festival having played here in 2018 as a member of Shrug.

10th Annual Bourbon Heritage Month Opening Toast

August 31, 2021 By Dayton937

10 years ago, we focused our attention on becoming a true Bourbon Bar. One that Joe dreamed of long before everyone and their brother started chasing bottles and hoarding limited releases. Things have changed dramatically over the past 10 years, including our growing space and selection here in Dayton.
In September 1964, Congress declared Bourbon America’s ‘Native Spirit’. As a way to honor this bill in 2007 the US Senate declared September ‘National Bourbon Heritage Month’. Now we celebrate the whole month with special releases and tastings. Come down and join us in toasting to the month long celebration!
Get a first look at all the special bottles we have coming up and share a drink with our staff! Hope to see you there!
**Also keep your eyes peeled for special tastings and events throughout the month www.centurybardayton.eventbrite.com

Three of them — Ida, Cora and Arry — have lived next door to each other for fifty years, and Esther, the eldest, lives only a few blocks away. We quickly learn that living so close to one another has taken its toll. Some start to question their lives and decide to make some changes before it’s too late.
