FromOhio Festival Lands in Springfield May 29–30, and Yes, It’s Free!

Remember IndieCraft? It got a glow-up. The festival formerly known as IndieCraft is back this spring under a new name, a new mission, and a lineup that leans hard into its best instinct: that you don’t actually need to fly anyone in to throw a great music festival in this state. FromOhio Music Festival takes over downtown Springfield Friday, May 29 and Saturday, May 30, with eleven Ohio indie acts, two historic venues, and a weekend of craft beer and local food — all free and open to the public.

The pitch is right there in the name. Cincinnati, Columbus, and Dayton have quietly been running one of the more interesting regional indie scenes in the country, and FromOhio is built around the idea that a great festival bill doesn’t have to look outward to fill itself out. This year’s lineup is a real cross-section of where the corridor is right now:

  • The Ophelias (Cincinnati) are arriving fresh off Spring Grove, their new Julien Baker–produced LP on Get Better Records
  • Carriers (Cincinnati) — Curt Kiser’s heartland-rock-meets-dream-pop project is touring behind their 2025 LP Every Time I Feel Afraid. Stereogum’s been calling them “dreamy, Dylan-esque” for a reason.
  • M Ross Perkins (Dayton) is a 60s-inspired psych-pop charmer, written up in American Songwriter and Uncut
  • crabswithoutlegs (Dayton / Columbus) is an amazing 12-piece neo-soul-fusion powerhouse and 2023 Dayton Battle of the Bands winners
  • Heather Redman & The Reputation, Mol Sullivan, Visitor, Multi Ultra, Novel Vibrations, Rug, and Jess Lamb rounding out the bill across indie, soul, shoegaze, and rock

Performances split between Mother Stewart’s Brewing (a craft brewery in a beautiful old downtown warehouse) and the historic State Theatre, which are both walkable and genuinely lovely venues to see a band in. More food vendor and brewery partner announcements are rolling out in the weeks ahead, so keep an eye on socials.

Springfield’s about 30 minutes up I-70. Call it a day trip, call it a mini-vacation, call it the easiest free weekend on your spring calendar, but get it on the calendar!

Halloween Funk-Rock Extravaganza: Ernie Johnson From Detroit & Subterranean Take Over The State Theater

Get ready for a freaky Friday night as The State Theater transforms into a heavy funk-rock-jazz dance party on Halloween, featuring Cincinnati’s Ernie Johnson From Detroit and Dayton’s own Subterranean. With costumes encouraged and special performances by The Gorgeous Ghost Demon Dancers from Troupe Roja, this promises to be one of the most electrifying Halloween events in the region.

Ernie Johnson From Detroit has built a reputation for delivering explosive live performances that blend funk, afrobeat, and jazz with ’70s psychedelia and hard rock. The Cincinnati-based big band is known for creating what they call “a hypnotic, danceable sound that is both accessible and boundary pushing at the same time.” Their shows center on intense, spontaneous improvisation combined with sophisticated compositions that live inside the groove. They have the ability to transform any venue into an infectious dance party has made them one of the most sought-after acts in the regional music scene.

Complementing the headliners is Subterranean, a fearless jam rock quartet from Dayton that has been lighting up stages for over 15 years. With their sound rooted in rock, funk, jazz, and blues, Subterranean brings what they describe as “improvisation with intent.” The band’s lineup features Chris Coalt on guitar and vocals, Stephen Buttree on keys, saxophone and vocals, Chuckie Love on bass and vocals, and Rob Brockman on drums and vocals. Subterranean’s live performances are characterized by edgy improvisation burning at full throttle, ignited by infectious grooves and powerful, passionate delivery.

Adding to the spectacle, The Gorgeous Ghost Demon Dancers from Troupe Roja will provide visual entertainment throughout the night. With costumes strongly encouraged, attendees are invited to embrace the Halloween spirit while dancing to some of the most innovative music Ohio has to offer.

The State Theater, a historic landmark known for its stunning Art Deco architecture, provides the perfect backdrop for this fusion of musical genres and Halloween festivities. The venue’s intimate setting allows audiences to fully experience the chemistry and creativity that both bands bring to the stage.

For fans of jam bands, funk, and high-energy live music, this Halloween double bill represents a can’t-miss opportunity to experience two of Ohio’s most dynamic acts in one unforgettable night. Dayton At Work and Play: Duohome

I find that stores run by artists tend to be interesting places, so after dropping my art off at the Springfield Museum of Art I visited Duohome (149 W Jefferson St, Springfield, OH).
I first visited the building back in 2016 to tour the art studio of Vicki Rulli and her husband Tom Heaphey. They bought an old industrial building in Springfield and then opened Itinerant Studio. It is a production art studio that sells art to designers, hotels and boutiques all over the world. Their work is beautiful. The black & white photo shows Tom and Vicki back in 2016.
During the pandemic the couple started renovating areas of the building that hadn’t been used. Two years ago, they opened Duohome. Vicki was there and I asked her to describe the store and how it came about.
“We’ve been selling to the design trade since 2008 with showrooms in New York, High Point and Atlanta. The brands we’re selling here have been our friends and colleagues, people selling alongside us at the same shows. We think of this as a “Lifestyle Store” and it’s modeled after how we live our own life.”
“Every single product that comes into DUO HOME must follow our “Four Goods”. They must be made by a good company that treats their employees well, have intentional and good design, be made with good materials, and have a good story to tell.”
Then Vicki started telling me some of the good stories of some of her products – about the employee-owned Ohio furniture company and the third-generation Danish company and others. I was reminded of my friend London Coe who sells chocolate from all over the world. If I ask about a chocolate bar, she can tell me about the person who made it and how it was made and the history of chocolate in that part of the world.

32 Food Trucks Compete for $10,000 in Springfield Saturday

Thirty-two food trucks will roll into Veteran’s Park this Saturday, Aug. 19, for the 9th Springfield Rotary Gourmet Food Truck Competition. The must-taste event of the summer will offer flavorful dishes and mouth-watering desserts, as well as live entertainment, from 11 am to 7 pm.

“We take great pride in orchestrating this competition and knowing it’s a staple summer event not only for the local community, but for foodies from all over Ohio,” said Eddie Bell, president of Springfield Rotary. “We bring a phenomenal group of food trucks together all in one place each year for a great cause, having raised more than $300,000 for charity since the inception of this event.”

The event committee selects a unique variety of trucks from those that apply each year, resulting in a diverse spread of cuisines throughout the park’s path. Different food choices available this weekend include the American staples of BBQ, burgers, pizza, seafood and wings, to foods from around the world, such as African, Asian, Cajun, Greek, Polynesian, Indian and Italian.

Each truck will submit their best signature dish for a shot at the $5,000 grand prize. A $2,500 runner-up and $1,500 third-place winner will also be selected by a panel of local and celebrity judges. Judges for this year’s competition include:

●  Jenn Disanto, Chef/Owner of Fresco by Chef Jenn Disanto (Dayton); and Executive Chef/Partner at SageCraft Catering (Kettering)

●  Lisa Freeman, Chef/Owner of Crust & Company, Salato Deli, Le Torte Dolci and Ironworks Waffle Cafe (Springfield)

●  Doug McGregor, Owner of Seasons Kitchen (Springfield)

●  Armando Soto, Co-owner of Casa del Sabor (Springfield)

●  Elizabeth Wiley, (Retired) Chef/Owner of Meadowlark Restaurant and Wheat Penny Oven and Bar (Dayton); and Partner of SageCraft Catering (Kettering)

All event attendees can also vote via the Springfield Food Truck mobile app for their favorite food truck to receive the $1,000 “People’s Choice” award. All winners will be announced on stage at approximately 4:45pm.

Live entertainment will provide the soundtrack throughout the event on the park’s amphitheater stage with four musical acts beginning at 11 am with Mike Manley and Katie Harford, followed throughout the day by Andy Fox, The Factory Line and Terrapin Moon.

While admission to the event is free, attendees can make donations to help support Springfield Rotary’s causes in-person and via the mobile app. A beer garden open throughout the event will feature craft beer from Springfield’s Mother Stewart’s Brewery, Michelob Ultra, Bud Light and White Claw. Water and a selection of soda will also be available.

“We encourage everybody to come early, bring your lawn chairs and blankets, stick around all day for the entertainment, and enjoy all the gourmet food the competition has to offer,” said Bell.

Which truck will take home the $10K grand prize at Saturday’s Springfield Rotary Food Truck Competition?!

After having to cancel last year’s event, the Springfield Rotary Gourmet Food Truck Competition is back for a seventh year, featuring palate-pleasing mobile cuisine and live entertainment in an environment that is fun for all ages. The community-favorite event will run from 11am to 9:30pm Saturday, Sept. 11 at Veterans Park in Springfield.

“We are pleased to be able to bring this charitable event back to Springfield this year,” said Eddie Bell, Rotary member and Food Truck Competition marketing committee chair. “It is an amazing way to bring the community together to make a difference. The best part about this event is that 100 percent of the proceeds go toward various causes, including services to people with disabilities and scholarships.”

The 30 food trucks competing this year have a wide variety of cuisines that are all gourmet and stand out in their own unique way, with the ultimate goal of winning the $10,000 grand prize. From Mexican, Asian, Latin, Mediterranean, Peruvian, Puerto Rican, South African and Creole choices, to gourmet sandwiches, BBQ, waffles, seafood, and sweet treats and desserts, the trucks lining the park’s pathway will cure any craving while creating new ones along the way. The Springfield Food Truck mobile app features the entire list of trucks participating, along with all other event information.

In addition to the $10,000 grand prize, a $5,000 runner-up and $2,000 third-place prize will be decided by a panel of five local professional chefs and at least five roving anonymous volunteer judges. Chef judges for this year’s competition feature an all-Springfield-based panel including:

  • Micah Berner, owner of Cecil and Lime
  • Chef Lisa Freeman, head chef and co-owner of Le Torte Dolci Bakery
  • Chef Clayton Horrighs, of Speakeasy Ramen
  • Chef Doug McGregor, owner of Seasons Kitchen
  • Chef Troy Wheat, of All Seasons Catering

All attendees can also vote via the Springfield Food Truck mobile app throughout the competition for their favorite food truck to receive the $1,000 “People’s Choice” award. All winners will be announced on stage at approximately 4:45 pm.

Live entertainment throughout the duration of the event starts at 11 a.m. with the marquee college football matchup of the weekend between Ohio State and Oregon shown on a jumbotron, and will continue through 9:30pm with three Ohio-based musical acts on stage including Factory Line at 3:30 pm, The Repeating Arms at 5:15 pm and Red Idle Rejects at 8:15 pm. Springfield…The Champion City…Is a trip worth taking!

In the alpha-trip series, we have tackled the letters U(rbana), N(ew Carlisle) and X(Xenia). Let’s hit 70 east and make a stop in the ‘Home City’ of Springfield. Before we get into the excitement, that is Clark County’s seat, a little disclaimer, I was born here…so it’s already home to me.

Hop, skip and a jump to the ‘Home City!’

Many folks don’t realize the importance Springfield played throughout Ohio’s history, but even today, glimpses of its past come beaming through. I have compiled a little day trip just for MostMetro readers to get the best of the best in Springfield.

Starting your day in Springfield, head over for breakfast to the Olympic to fill up for your big day. This greek diner is a little treasure hidden among a plethora of restaurants on Bechtle Avenue. They have quick, friendly service and feature some really great omelettes (try the Gyro Omelette…yum!), interesting soups (my mom loves the lemon rice soup) and are vegetarian friendly. It can be a bit crowded but rest assured you are leaving full…portions are large.

You have to see this to believe it.

First stop on our whirlwind trip is the Hartman Rock Garden, which unless you have seen it, you cannot explain it. Open 365 days a year, from dusk to dawn, this folk art phenomena, is chock full of Ben Hartman’s rock creations. In the garden you will see creations ranging from detailed figurines to gorgeous fish ponds. The garden is literally constructed of hundreds of thousands of stones. 90 plus years in the making, the garden was renovated in 2010, and it is magnificent to walk through. The story goes that Ben constructed the garden for his wife as a ‘Garden of Love,’ once you visit it, you’ll feel the same! The garden is located at 1905 Russel Avenue.

Hopping back in the car, let’s head to the Heritage Center. The building alone is stunning, and inside awaits archives, bios and scaled models. The Romanesque building dates to 1890 when it was a marketplace, and the admission is FREE! To really get a feel for Springfield’s role in America’s growth, the museum features how the city helped shape the nation. Check it out at 117 S. Fountain Ave.
And one more before lunch.

The arts are alive in SmoA!

Small, quaint and oh, so perfect is Springfield’s Art Museum. Let’s face it, Americans love their art in small doses…and this is the winner. Situated in beautiful Cliff Park, the museum features ever-changing artwork and a fun, scenic Sculpture Walk. When I was there last, Charlie and Edie Harper’s permanent exhibit was a fave. Filled with classrooms and activities, you can see why this is such a gem! The museum is at 107 Cliff Park Rd.

Hungry? Right up the street is Seasons Bistro and Grille. It’s an excellent choice for lunchtime in the city. A great wine selection awaits in this restaurant featuring local fare, a constantly rotating menu, and waitresses that aim to please. Mom and I enjoyed the bibimbap and Bison Burger on or recent visit. It’s vibe is unique and edgy, but it never forgets its clientele. We had an apple turnover at our lunch’s end…and yes, order it!

After lunch, comes a real treat…a visit to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Westcott House at 85 Greenmount Ave. The property, now back to its original condition and design, is so inspired, I feel guilty giving away any details. Just know that the furnishings, the accessories, the tours, the entirity is a 10 out of 10. The house is one of Wright’s greatest masterpieces and to know it is only 35 minutes away should excite.
Alright outdoorsy fans….I am sure you have heard of the Fair at New Boston, which takes place in George Rogers Clark Park. Stuffed with history, including the ‘alleged’ birthplace of Tecumseh, the park has seen many a battle, including the Battle of Peckuwe, which was the largest in the American Revolution west of the Alleghenies. The labyrinth of trails is extensive and and the nature preserve is beautiful.

Time to have dinner and wrap it up. I have to give a plug to one of my favorite since I was youngster, the Hickory Inn….their pizza is still one I crave from time to time! (at 652 north Limestone St.)
However, we are going to go a couple blocks north of there and hit Cecil and Lime. Live music, a nice atmosphere, and attention to detail make this a good choice in Springfield. The variety of food on the menu matched with well-prepared food keep us coming back. In the Warmer months, Cecil and Lime cannot be beat with their outdoor seating. There is an elegance to the place, and it continues to evolve! You will find it at 227 East Cecil Street.

 

Great stop for a Beer.

As we head back home, we have to stop at Mother Stewart’s Taproom to share a beer in Springfield’s brewing company. Located at 109 West North Street, Mother Stewart’s offers about 8-10 different beers, from Lagers to Witbiers. The interior of the place is rustic and perfect for events. Speaking of events, they have a ton…so check out their Facebook Page for info.

Time to hit the road for home…..until we venture out again…

Brookville’s Girls Tennis Team Wins Local Tournament

Brookville HS Girls Tennis Team 2016

Congratulations are in order for the Brookville Girls Tennis Team. They were declared winners of the Jennifer Schmidt Memorial Tennis Tournament, September 20th at Thomas Cloud Park.

Brookville High School, out of Brookville Ohio, bested the following local teams:

Beavercreek HS – Beavercreek, OH

Carroll High School – Dayton, OH

Catholic Central High School – Springfield, OH

Jennifer Lee Schmidt, 1985 Carroll Graduate

Kenton Ridge High School – Springfield, OH

Lehman Catholic Schools – Sidney, OH

Tippecanoe High School – Tipp City, OH

Valley View High School – Germantown, OH

 

It was a big win for Brookville who scored the most points in the day’s matches to surpass the other schools.   There were competitive girls tennis matches with some of the area’s most talented players.

The Tournament was well attended

Individual awards included :

1st Team Singles Champion: Jillian Milano, from Carroll High School who won the 1st Team Tournament Singles title for a record 4th year in a row.

2nd Team Singles Champion: The title went to Ashley Wallace from Kenton Ridge High School.

3rd Team Singles champion: Leena Koklades from Brookville High School

Other winners included:

1st Team Doubles Champions: Danielle Spanbauer & Alissa Otte from Carroll High School

THE HISTORY OF THE TOURNAMENT:
The year was 1985.  The parents of former Carroll High School student Jennifer Lee Schmidt had reported their daughter missing from the area of Purdue University.  She was never found.

Concession profits went to charity

Carroll High School has tried to turn this heartbreak into a positive, by sponsoring a memorial Girls’ Tennis Tournament in Jennifer’s honor each year.

It was a great tournament, a good cause and a beautiful setting.

There was also a concession stand with doughnuts, grilled hamburgers and hot dogs run by our own Food Adventures Crew.  All proceeds from the concession stand benefitted the annual event and the Carroll HS Girls Tennis Team.

Seafood Dishes like “Mariscos Acapulco” are ‘Must Eats’ at El Herradura Restaurant

Whether you like the authentic Taqueira style Mexican food, or the somewhat Americanized Tex-Mex food found around town, you can find both options at El Herradura Restaurant.

Food Adventures with Big Ragu and the Crew have visited this spot on Upper Valley Pike in Springfield a couple of times.  We have been there when it is packed, been there when they had Mariachi Bands, and been there on a quiet Sunday afternoon.   One night Dayton Most Metro’s own Lisa Grigsby from Dayton Dining even joined us!  So this article takes all angles into account.

The menu is extensive, and we’ve tried many dishes.  Sure, we can give honorable mention to their delicious queso and salsa, but let’s dig deeper.  We discovered some secret offerings that you can take advantage of everyday.   But,  in our opinion, when it comes to this menu, seafood is king !

 

HERE’S THE SKINNY:

— Located at 1236 Upper Valley Pike in Springfield and open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.

— They have a large outdoor patio deck with decorative umbrella tables, and a fun atmosphere

If you get a Taco, get it “Paul’s Way”

— Mom and Pop Restaurant owned by husband and wife Paul and Yadira DePuy.   Yadira is a native of Mexico, while Paul grew up in Springfield.  The menu reflects some of Yadira’s family recipes and some of Paul’s food loves.

— Large Bar area that is perfect for happy hour or “just drinks” nights.

— HD TV’s throughout the Dining Room for Sporting Events !

 

We made our way through the literally hundred options on the El Herradura menu and now we point you toward the best stuff on the menu ..

Get ready Dayton foodies,  here is your  “Must Eats!”

 

MUST EATS:

— BLUE CADILLAC MARGARITA:  This is actually a “must drink,” that packs a powerful punch.  We found this to be our favorite margarita.   In fact “The King” loved it.  His expertise in Margaritas goes back to his Air Force days in Texas!  The berry flavor is delicious.  Beware: this potent potion is a served in a big margarita glass.  Make sure if you order it, that you eat something, or you will be run over by the Blue Cadillac !

“Tilapia Cancun” at El Herradura Restaurant: You gotta try it !

—CANCUN TILAPIA: Grilled, Whole Tilapia served with rice, beans.  One of the Big Ragu’s favorite’s.  Exotic, delicious and the fish is very tender and delicate.   The filet meat slides right off the bone.  Sure, you have a whole fish on your plate, but are you a Food Adventurer or not ?  Impress your amigos, by ordering this eye catching plate.   The taste will have you hooked, pun intended.

— MARISCOS ACAPULCO: Grilled scallops, grilled shrimp, and pan seared imitation crab served on a hot fajita plate with mango, Mexican rice, lettuce, pico de gallo and guacamole.  It is creamy and delicious.  One of those meals you can’t stop eating, even when you are full.

— TACO’ S PAUL’S WAY:  This is a little known secret that is not on the menu.  It is how many of the employees and owners eat their tacos.. the authentic way.  Paul’s Way Taco’s are served  on soft corn tortillas, with your choice of meat, chopped onions, cilantro and fresh limes.  There is no cheese on this one.  Listen Gringo, these tacos are the real deal, and it is how they serve ’em up South of the border.  We suggest the chorizo meat or chicken meat in the tacos.  Get an authentic taste of Mexico City, and you don’t need a passport.

— SEAFOOD CHIMICHANGA:  Pan seared scallops, shrimp, and a cheese sauce, rolled inside a tortilla.  The Chimichanga is not huge, we could have ordered two of them.  Your friends will have a fork in your plate looking for a taste, but tell them to scram, Vamoose !  They can get their own.  This seafood chimichanga ranks among the top of all time.

— SEAFOOD MOLCAJETE: Fish, Scallops, and shrimp served in a bowl with red, yellow and green bell peppers. onions, cheese, rice, tomato, lettuce and sour cream.  The pile of seafood is delicious and they’re tagline is “more shrimp than you can eat.”  This is a Food Adventure dish for sure !

— FRIED BANANA BURRITO:  Banana lovers will crave this sweet dessert.  It is like bananas foster in a blanket.  Pan seared bananas, wrapped in a tortilla then fried.  It is finished with drizzles of chocolate, caramel and cinnamon.  Not a large burrito, the size is just perfect for a delicious end to your meal, muchacho.

Food Trucks Converge In Springfield Saturday

Thirty-five food trucks from Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati as well as Kentucky and Indiana are set to compete in the Springfield Rotary Gourmet Food Truck Competition on Sat, Aug. 16 in Veteran’s Park from 11am – 9pm.

Dayton area trucks that are signed up  to compete include:

Go Cupcake, C’est Cheese, Harvest Mobile Cuisine, Hunger Paynes, McNasty’s, PA’s Pork and Zombie Dogz.

The winner of the $10,000 grand prize for Best Food Truck Cuisine will be decided by a panel of local celebrity judges, which includes:

Smith, a restaurant owner for more than 35 years, enjoys seeing passionate chefs who focus on five or six specialty items to feed the public.

“I’ve seen the evolution of food and dining from access to ingredients, the Localvore movement, Food Network and star chefs,” Smith said. “I love the idea of food trucks and their ability to set up, feed people in parking lots, street corners and special events.”

In addition to the grand prize for Best Food Truck Cuisine, 12 anonymous judges will choose winners of Best Truck/Cart Design, Best Customer Service and Best Menu, all of which will be awarded $1,000.  Each truck receives a $500 stipend just for participating.

Running from 11 am to 9 pm, the competition will also host live entertainment featuring four local bands –

Cowboy Hillbilly Hippy Folk  – who claim their style is “wandering and waving through the grass”

Omega Point – a Springfield band that plays festivals and nightclubs

The Temps – The nerdy, musical geniuses play upbeat renditions of dance cover music from the 80’s to today.

And of course their is a beer garden for those 21 and older. Admission to the event is free.  Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and if you bring pets, they must be on a leash. Veteran’s Park, where the event will take place, was formerly known as Cliff Park, is located on the edge of Wittenberg University campus at 250 Cliff Park Road.

The money raised from the competition’s numerous sponsors will go toward the Springfield Rotary Club’s charities – Services to People with Disabilities, Polio Plus (the worldwide eradication of Polio) and the International Project in Lesotho.

 

John Legend To Return to Springfield For Hometown Concert

John LegendNine-time Grammy winner and Springfield native John Legend will perform a live show on the campus of Clark State Community College March 1 in support of a nonprofit agency that’s working to make a positive impact on Springfield’s youth with a pre-concert college fair.

The Be About It Movement celebrates fathers and seeks to motivate them to step up and be involved in their kids’ lives. The agency seeks to leverage the combined strength of all of Springfield’s social agencies to improve the community and support families throughout the region.

The college fair will be held Saturday, March 1, at the Clark State Performing Arts Center at 300 Fountain Ave. in Springfield from 4 to 6 p.m. Families and students from all backgrounds and ages will benefit from the fairs participants and the resources they share.

The concert will be held in the same building from 7 to 9 p.m. Doors will open at 6:30. The show will feature local artists, including Vaughn Anthony, and will close with a performance by Legend.

Tickets cost $20 and can be purchased at the Clark State Box Office Tuesday–Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at (937) 328-3874.

The college fair/concert is the third Be About It Movement event since December 2012. Anthony, John Legend’s brother, is the founder of the nonprofit and is organizing the event.

Club Panama Rocks for 7th Annual Juvenile Diabetes Benefit

1231613_10200677179353441_1470829809_nFor seven years Club Panama owner Susie Maynard has held the For Love of Sonny Rock 4 A Cure, a juvenile diabetes fundraiser to raise awareness, educate and honor her son who passed away in 2004 from the disease. Maynard has owned the club for over 25 years, giving several area bands their start including ShovelHead, National Headcase, Devium and Mother’s Onion. In 1994 she was dubbed The Mother Of All Rock by the Springfield News & Sun. Panama was also one of the only clubs at the time to give original local metal bands a shot.

The club has received several awards from the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). Over 3 million people die annually from the disease and it’s the leading cause of kidney failure, blindness, amputations, and a major factor in heart attacks and strokes, among other conditions. It’s a physically debilitating disease and no cure has been found.

On Friday October 4th and Saturday the 5th, 12 bands from Dayton and Springfield will volunteer their time and talent to help support the cause. Friday’s lineup includes Element of Surprise, Fletcher Munson, Blackout Method, TBH (This Blessed Hatred), National Headcase and Killed By Art. Saturday’s showcase features The Defendants, Mothers Onion, Dead Beat, Gathering Mercury, Silver Skull and Abrade The Regal. There will be raffles, auctions and drawings both nights. Both shows start at 8:00pm with a $5 cover. Club Panama is located at 951 James Street, Springfield OH 45503.

REVIEW: Bogey’s Bar Hosts United We Jam Against Cancer

Editor’s note:  In May of 2013, the Springfield News Sun reported that Michelle Mundy was under investigation for potential fraud as she allegedly had faked a cancer diagnosis.  Ms Mundy subsequently surrendered to the police.

Saturday March 9th Bogey’s Bar and Grill in Springfield held the United We Jam Music Against Cancer Fundraiser for Yellow Springs resident Michelle Mundy. Four acts as different as they were united in the cause played to help raise funds for Mrs. Mundy’s treatment and medical expenses.

Mundy was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) at 37, 8 years after fighting her first bout with the  ‘big C’ at 29. Starting chemotherapy in September of 2012, continuing into 2013, she’s gone through 6 rounds every other Monday until Mid-December. Radiation may follow. 11 tumors were found in the soft tissue, bones, organs, abs, and some attached to bones on the ribs. Her medication expenses are around $1500 a month. From September-October 2012 she received R-CHOP therapy (an administration of four chemo-related drugs) every 14 days.   NHL is found in cancerous white blood cells and is curable so the fight rages on. The show began with the uniquely rap inclined Dipspit. In the vein of Eminen meets Tenacious D the duo perform emotional, spirited raps of slight adult nature. Spewing out ultra-serious lyrics that’ll make you laugh, roll your eyes or go WTH. The bearded high priest of sweaty movement DJ DumptRuck shouts out his backup sermon through mic and megaphone bringing their own personal mini sound system as front-man DipSpit tells the stories of the Pontoon boat and Dropkicking the Dub Plate. They’re as different in their spectacle as they are entertaining in their effort and presentation.   We’re infected with DipSpit Fever forever and the Springfield scene will never be the same.

And now for something completely different…. the Shope brothers, Jason and Jacob scale things down with an acoustic as older Jacob keeps the beat a bit differently playing a hand slapping Cajon Box. They play some sweet country tunes singing about the intoxicating effect that special girl has on you. There’s Hell on Wheels as we get the adrenaline twang going and a bootleg shiner from the law for our trouble.  Jason Aldean’s Wheels Rolling could be the cowboy hat tipping version of Turn the Page. We go cruising n sightseeing down that Florida Georgia Line whistling Dixie at all the ladies. From the southern panhandle we take a Canadian detour to heaven with Bryan Adams.

Dayton’s four piece angry thrashers Destracore opened their turbo’d up set turning on the metal machine full grind unleashing The Beast upon the unsuspecting onlookers. Singer Don Potter tag teams between yelling and actual singing as some screamers can’t do. Now that Twinkies have been resurrected, those and Cockroaches will still be the only things surviving the apocalypse but we’ll still all Die Out in style. The bearded Potter, technically a harry Potter possesses a unique pallet of the usual growls, screams and screeching but can also carry a tune with a bit of creepy melancholy and tension attached. They play their future single When I Close My Eyes. They’ve found a nice balance of the heavy stuff infusing some well-placed melody. They take a page from priest, and Break the Law. There’s some nice Death inspired bass and drum dancing beginning/during the Final Act slowing down the ends coming. Their core started humbly in a New Carlisle kitchen in 1998; relentless touring made them a staple in the Dayton/Springfield metal scene releasing their debut effort Yield. In 2002 they invaded the Columbus area scene and after an 8 year hiatus have returned with a five song crunching demo displaying a hybrid influenced sound and new musical presence. See them April 6th at Club Panama.

The sirens roar as Gathering Mercury start a Bitchin good time. They start with the opening tracks from their debut CD Where The Others Go. Ashley Stacey sings with a sweet soft spoken cue with a rasp of attitude proving with each show she’s a forerunner for her generation’s Joan Jett.  She’s the cute girl next door with a sweet smile with a ‘hint’ of rebellion you keep your eye on. They Lean Into the Fall playing their Dayton Does Dayton tribute to Mona, try out two new tunes. Stacey has the stage presence for rock n roll and Broadway. Bassist Quique Bucio plays deep notes with a side or two of comical humor and physical comedy. They finish with a little high octane Hoochie Koo then Paint it Black with mercury.  See them April 13th and May 11th at Canal Street Tavern.

A Musical Journey ‘Unbroken’ With Tim Gebard

The Dayton music scene has people from all walks of life immersed into it.  Go to a show, and you will notice the differences of each and every single person performing.  You have your punk rock bands that wail around the stage, and occasionally throw themselves onto the crowd.  There are the artists and bands that just take the room over, and will not let go till they say that they are done.  You have your dreamers-the people that will not allow anyone to get in the way.  There is also the performer that simply enjoy going on stage and play live, simply just for the thrill on being on stage.  Old and young, no matter the case, there is one thing that each and every artist or band has in common. That is they have love and appreciation for music.

One great example of someone that truly has a love for music is local musician Tim Gebard.  Gebard is currently in the process of working on his newest EP, which is due by April.  His first album, Unbroken Hearts, is available at Omega Music, The Record Gallery, and on his website (www.timgebard.com).

Gebard grew up in Springfield, Ohio and started playing music in his teens.  He grew up listening to the classics – Van Morrison, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd.  He worked at a local record store in Dayton in the early 70’s, where he was able to spin some of his favorite music.  It was great experience for him, getting the chance to branch out and find music that would inspire and influence his music playing.  While sitting down at Ghostlight Coffee recently, Gebard told me a story about an experience he had at the record shop.  He went into detail of when Pink Floyd’s groundbreaking tour de force, The Wall, was released.  “We had to play that record from the minute we opened to the minute we closed”, explained Gebard.  “We all got sick of hearing it.  So, one day we got our shipment and I noticed that we got a record of a woman whose vocals were simply amazing.  We put it on, and immediately sold every single copy within an hour.  It was the latest album from Aretha Franklin.”  That speaks to broad musical influences.

While he was always around the music scene, and many friends went on to careers in the music field, Tim’s playing was limited to his solo acoustic efforts. Gebard would continue to write music throughout the years, always continuing to keep the passion for music running around his body and mind.  About five years ago, he joined with some friends in a cover band called Pocket Change, playing for private parties and events.  Internal conflicts proved to be a struggle.  At one point, Gebard would use his work that he had written and fill in the lead role in the singing department.  Ultimately, the band broke up.  But the experience of singing and writing helped propel him to go into the studio.

In October, 2010, Gebard started recording with Dean Vincent at Studio D in New Carlisle.  He would use all the music that he wrote, and have people come in and help with the process.  He had legendary guitarist Junior Smith come in and play on many of the songs.  Violin accompaniment from the ever-talented Sara Kasten and Susan Heeg would bring orchestral influence to some of the songs.  Contributions from the Toles family, local Gospel music legends (especially nephew Doug Toles Jr.), added another influence to his music.  Ron Hartwell, a noted Dayton-area band leader, added dynamic sax and flute tracks.  And the pedal steel guitar playing of virtuoso Wayne Hobbs brought an incredible country influence on several cuts.  And local singer-songwriter Jayne Sachs sang on several songs.  When Gebard spoke of the people that came in to help lay down the tracks, his eyes lightened up, and the humbleness came and stood squarely right in front of him.  “I still can’t believe that I was able to have all this talent come in and play”, Gebard said.  “I loved how the album turned out.  Ultimately, each artist brought a desire to serve the song.”

Unbroken Hearts is an album that simply will not let you define it as one genre, something that Gebard purposely did.  With each song, there are different influences that sprinkle throughout the album.  From country to rock, from soft to fast, Unbroken Hearts guides you all around the dial of music in its purest forms.  ‘Someone To Believe’ presents a lounge room vibe to the song that gives it a jazz feel.  For the Jimmy Buffet fans, ‘Let’s Find Out’ will fulfill those dreams of lying around on the beach, having a drink with an umbrella in the clear glass.  ‘Crazy ‘Bout That Woman’ is a twang upbeat that would give classic country fans a reason to smile.  Hearts is a warm, inviting collection of songs that dives into the joys of being in relationships, and the beauty of being in love.

Unbroken HeartsThe album Unbroken Hearts has seen some remarkable things tied to the album.  ‘Life Time Love’ was the winner of the 8th Annual International Acoustic Music Awards in the Country/Bluegrass category.  ‘Smiles Without Words’ was Honorable Mention in the Instrumental category in the 2011 International Songwriting Competition.  Several songs are under non-exclusive contracts with A&R companies.  (Note: A song from his upcoming EP – “To Licata”, an instrumental inspired by a recent trip to Italy – was recently named an Honorable Mention in the Songdoor 2012 International Songwriting Competition.)

Another great storyline with the album – Gebard’s son, Aaron, plays bass on most of the songs.  “It was really fun being able to have my son play on this album.  He is extremely talented, and it just added to the joy of making this album”, Gebard said.  Aaron has his own band as well: The Mergs, who have been playing locally for the past several years.

When you listen to Gebard talk, you hear the joys of being able to do something that he loves.  While we sat at Ghostlight Coffee, he spoke of the joys of being able to play with all the great musicians around town.  He spoke about wanting to travel to Nashville and getting the chance to show his talent at the famous Bluebird Cafe.  He talked about recent trips he has taken, and becoming influenced by the local music.  It’s always refreshing and a thrill to speak with people like Tim Gebard.  His love for music is all the reason to support the great music that is being performed live in town.

To see for yourself, Gebard will be performing at O’Riley’s Tavern in Brookville, Ohio on February 23rd.  Gebard will have a band performing with him (Jay Madewell on drums, Todd The Fox on guitar and dobro, Steve Makofka on accordion/etc.).  Aaron Gebard will also be playing in his dad’s band and also be playing with his own band.  The Tim Gebard Band/The Mergs show will start around 8pm.

Folk Musicians Susan Werner and David Wilcox Kickoff Club Kuss Series

Friday, October 12th marks the first show in this year’s Club Kuss Series featuring singer-songwriter-guitar-playing duo Susan Werner and David Wilcox.  The concert will take place on Friday, October 12, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. at the Clark State Performing Arts Center, Kuss Auditorium in downtown Springfield.

Called the ‘empress of the unexpected’ by NPR, singer-songwriter, pianist, harmonica- and guitar-playing artist Susan Werner turns a corner in her multifaceted musical career with her vibrant new album, Kicking the Beehive. It’s an 11-song collection of provocative, poignant, lyrical originals that are infused with the rustic roots of American folk, blues and country music. Like many songwriters with a literary bent, Werner worries that much of pop music is a mile wide and an inch deep. “But seems to me, the best songs are more like an inch wide and a mile deep,” she says. Produced by Rodney Crowell, recorded in Nashville and featuring such all-star guests as Vince Gill, Keb’ Mo’ and Paul Franklin, Kicking the Beehive is a personal project where Werner intuitively explores the full impact of looking beyond the superficial and delving into soulful honesty. There are few performers out there today that have the voice, musicianship and songwriting abilities that Susan Werner has.

Kevin Smith vs Hollywood – Springfield, Ohio is a battlefield…

Kevin Smith, the director of the 1994 cult-hit Clerks as well as several follow-up films such as Mall Rats, Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back and Chasing Amy (as well as playing Silent Bob in many of those same films) has made a new movie.  Titled Red State, this horror/thriller is about a group of sex-crazed teens who encounter a gay-hating minister and his group of fundamentalists with a sinister agenda.

While this genre is a bit of a departure from Smith’s prior efforts, his method of marketing and distribution for the film harkens back to his Clerks days when he sold his comic book collection and maxed out credit cards in order to achieve independent film maker status.  This time around, he is completely bypassing the Hollywood machine – instead choosing to use his fan base through social media to release the film, as well as a fifteen-city screening tour that will make a stop at Kuss Auditorium at the Clark State Performing Arts Center on March 14th.

Smith plans to work directly with movie theater owners in order to get the movie on screen by the targeted October 19, 2011 date, a plan he unveiled at the film’s Sundance Film Festival premiere this past Sunday where he had originally indicated he’d be auctioning the film to a distributor live on the stage.  Instead, he “bought” the film himself for $20 and gave the proverbial middle finger to Hollywood.  As an added twist, the film is supposedly based on the Christian fundamentalist Westboro Baptist Church, infamous for picketing soldiers’ funerals with “God Hates Fags” signs.  That group predictably protested the premiere and will likely be in Springfield in March for the screening.

Tickets to the local screening go on sale for $67 this Friday at 10am in person at the Clark State Performing Arts Center, with online tickets available that same day at noon.
