The Pullouts at Rip Rap Roadhouse

May 7, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Many music fans in recent years have complained that modern music has lost something. Some indefinable quality, common in the musical landscape of decades past, is now missing in the mainstream.

Scott Houchens, songwriter and pianoman of Dayton, Ohio’s “The Pullouts”, wants to give listeners what they lost. The Pullouts’ 2014 album, The Thought of You Waiting on Me, is full of what Houchens describes as “weary songs laced with hope and happy songs with a sad message” that sound like they’d be more at home in your dad’s record collection than on your iPhone.

Celebrate Virtual Bike Month!

May 4, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Five Rivers MetroParks invites the public to celebrate Bike Month virtually this May with a variety of independent activities that celebrate human-powered transportation. Virtual Bike Month, will explore the region’s paved trails and many resources for cyclists.

Weekly rides, tips, games and more will be posted on metroparks.org/bikemonth and shared in the Virtual Bike Month Facebook group. MetroParks is working with other organizations, such as Bike Miami Valley and Mike’s Bike Park and Linkon the activities.

“This year during Virtual Bike Month, we’re really excited to showcase all the region has to offer for cyclists of all experience levels,” said special events coordinator Angela York. “Dayton is the center of the nation’s largest paved trail network and there’s so much to offer — especially for those looking to incorporate cycling as a means of transportation into their routine.”

Each week in May, a variety of activities will be posted, such as:

  • HISTORIC SITES — Learn how you can visit historic sites along the Dayton region’s vast paved trail network.
  • TRAIL OF THE WEEK — Explore cycling trails throughout the Miami Valley.
  • TECHNIQUE OF THE WEEK — Learn techniques for smart road cycling and mountain biking maneuvers.
  • MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAILS — Discover mountain bike trails and parks in the region so you can get started or expand your skills.
  • CLUBS AND CHARITY RIDES — Connect with local cycling clubs and learn about charity rides throughout the year.
  • FIELD TRIPS — Explore the outer regions of the trails and other biking opportunities in the region.

Additionally, there will be family biking tips and a weekly Bicycle Bingo Challenge that will encourage participants to complete rides, explore the outdoors and use new skills they’ve learned throughout the month. Participants will have 10 days to create a Bingo and will use a weekly hashtag to enter for a chance to win prizes.

A conservation agency, MetroParks also encourages people to participate in Bike Month as a way to lessen their carbon footprint, as cycling has less impact on the environment than vehicles that contribute to carbon emissions. As such, MetroParks will host a weekly photo contest asking people to submit photos of them using their bikes as a means of transportation. Winners will receive fun swag from MVRPC.

On Friday, May 21 —  National Bike to Work Day — MetroParks will encourage people to take solo rides to their place of employment, school or to a daily activity to experience what their commute would be like on a bicycle.

Before Bike Month officially begins, MetroParks invites participants to check their gear and prepare for the month by visitingmetroparks.org/bikemonth for instructional safety videos made by MetroParks’ outdoor recreation professionals.

“Cycling is something you can feel good about in so many ways,” said York. “It gets your body moving, is a good choice for the environment and helps people decompress by being outdoors — all of which are beneficial, especially right now.”

The League of American Bicyclists has designated Dayton a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community, and Dayton is home the nation’s largest paved trail network where you can experience 340 miles of connected trails. Five Rivers MetroParks is a silver-level Bicycle Friendly Businesses.

New Link Stations Added in Carillon and Huffman Neighborhoods

April 30, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

On May 5th, Bike Miami Valley and Greater Dayton RTA’s program, Link: Dayton Bike Share will launch seven new hubs available in the Link Dayton app. These hubs are designated locations where users can checkout and return bikes. Support from the City of Dayton, CareSource and Five Rivers MetroParks make the expansion possible. The organizations will host a socially distant ribbon cutting at 10:30 AM at Welcome Park to celebrate the expansion.

Huffman Link Station

The City of Dayton, who is supporting the expansion into the Carillon and Huffman neighborhoods, played a critical role in helping Bike Miami Valley and its Link program connect to neighborhood leadership. “Link: Dayton Bike Share has been an amazing resource for keeping our city active and bike-friendly. We see this expansion into Carillon and Huffman neighborhoods as an investment in more mobility options for more Dayton residents,” says Mayor Nan Whaley.

“Bike Miami Valley recently brought a bike to one of our outdoor neighborhood meetings for a demonstration, and I got a chance to try it. I forgot how much I loved biking until I took a spin. We’re looking forward to having Link in neighborhood,” said Carillon Civic Council President Gwen Buchanan.

CareSource will add two new downtown locations and support two existing locations to encourage ridership between their campus-like office buildings downtown. “CareSource is committed to the health and vitality of downtown,” says Dan McCabe, CareSource Chief Administrative Officer and CEO CareSource Foundation. “We’re looking forward to offering our employees a safe, convenient alternative transportation option when they return to the office in person.”

Five Rivers MetroParks is continuing its support of Link with the addition of a location at Deeds Point MetroPark. “As warm weather finally comes and the Deeds Point Bridge reopens—soon!—We’re excited to see the Link network expand to serve more of our community. To be able to travel so much of greater downtown on a Link Bike is convenient, safe, healthy, and, most of all, fun,” says Becky Benná of Five Rivers MetroParks.

To take advantage of the new locations, users can download the Link Dayton app to get riding.

Mint Juleps & Derby Day- A May Tradition

April 30, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

It has been the official drink of the Kentucky Derby for almost a century; according to the website of the annual event, nearly 120,000 juleps are sold at Churchill Downs over the two-day race period. Like most recipes that come from the South, mint juleps have a long and often debated history. It is  widely believed that the name of the drink comes from the Persian word gulab and the Arab word julab, both of which translate to rosewater. The term julep was also used to refer to any type of syrupy mixed drink taken with medicine. As early as 1784, mint juleps were prescribed to soothe aching stomachs and help patients who had difficulty swallowing.  Southerners started each day with a mint julep to protect themselves from mosquitoes and malaria. The drink was so delicious, though, that it became a relaxing beverage, in addition to a medicinal one.
To this day, many enthusiasts insist that a proper julep should be made only with bourbon whiskey. Given that Bourbon County is the birthplace of bourbon whiskey, there is also a strong connection between the mint julep and the state of Kentucky. As early as 1816, silver julep cups were offered as prizes at Kentucky county fairs, early evidence of the states association with the famous cocktail. It iss unclear how exactly the mint julep became the star drink of the Kentucky Derby in 1938, but it comes as no surprise that this bourbon-centric cocktail is now celebrated as the beverage of choice at the states most famous event.
Perhaps you’d like to serve some variation on the classic Mint Julep.  Try these:

Royal Thai Spice JulepMay be an image of drink

2 oz. Blade & Bow Bourbon
1 oz. Kaffir Lime Juice
2 basil leaves
10 mint leaves
½ tsp Thai Spice- dash each lemon powder, sea salt, chili powder, ground ginger, mustard seed, clove
1 tsp confectioners’ sugar
Grind spices for 20 seconds in a coffee/spice grinder. Shake all ingredients over ice in a cocktail shaker & strain over crushed ice in Julep Cup. Top with whole chilis and fresh Mint or Basil & Lime.

Champagne Julep Cocktail

2 oz bourbon

6 mint leaves
1 tsp superfine sugar (or 0.5 oz simple syrup)
4 oz champagne
Garnish: mint sprig

  • In a julep cup, gently muddle the mint leaves and the sugar or simple syrup (if using sugar, also add a few drops of water to help with dissolution).
  • Fill cup three-quarters of the way with crushed ice.
  • Add bourbon and stir very gently.
  • Add more crushed ice.
  • Add champagne.
  • Top the cup with a dome of crushed ice, garnish with a sprig of mint, and serve.

Ginger Mint Julep

2 sprigs of mint
½ oz. simple syrup
¼ oz. lemon juice
2 oz. bourbon
1 oz. ginger liqueur
Sprig of mint and slice of candied ginger for garnish

  • In a mixing glass, muddle the mint and simple syrup.
  • Add the remaining ingredients and stir thoroughly, then strain into a julep cup filled with crushed ice.
  • Stir gently until the cup is frosted, then top with more crushed ice and garnish with the fresh mint and candied ginger.

Whiskey Smash Cocktail

2 oz bourbon
0.5 oz simple syrup
Half a lemon, cut into wedges
5 mint leaves
Mint sprig for garnish
  • Muddle the lemon, mint, and simple syrup in the bottom of a cocktail shaker, then fill with ice.
  • Add the bourbon and shake until chilled.
  • Strain into an Old-Fashioned glass filled with crushed ice (or a single large cube).
  • Garnish with a sprig of mint, clapped once between your hands to release the aromatic oils.

The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the American Triple Crown of horse racing. It is historically run on the first Saturday in May. First run in 1875, this 1 1/4 mile—or 10 furlongs—race runs on the dirt track at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, where it has been held since its inaugural running in 1875.

Only 3-year-old Thoroughbreds can qualify for the Kentucky Derby. Eligible horses compete in the Race to the Kentucky Derby, a series of 35 races around the world. Horses win points for finishing in the top four spots, and the 20 horses with the most points at the end of the series gain entry into the Derby.

When is the 2021 Kentucky Derby?

The 147th Kentucky Derby is on Saturday, May 1. Coverage begins on NBCSN, NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app at 12 pm and will move from NBCSN to NBC at 2:30 pm Post time for the 2021 Kentucky Derby is set for approximately 6:57 pm.

The other 2 races that make up the triple crown are:

  • Saturday, May 15: 146th Preakness Stakes
  • Saturday, June 5: 153rd Belmont Stakes

YWCA Opens Huber Heights Campus!

April 27, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

A nearly 20-acre space in Huber Heights is now the newest program location for YWCA Dayton, the oldest multicultural social services organization serving women and girls in the Miami Valley. The 151-year-old nonprofit currently operates six locations across Montgomery and Preble counties.

The YWCA Dayton Huber Heights Campus, located at 7650 Timbercrest Dr., was built in 1980 as
the Montgomery County Developmental Center, which closed in 2018. The property consists of 11
buildings on 19.445 acres, including: seven residential units; a 20,000-square-foot administration
building with community meeting space; and green space with a gazebo, picnic shelter, and trail.

“This was an incredible opportunity,” said Shannon Isom, president and CEO. “We are not out to
grow for the sake of growth; based on our history, based on our relationships, based on the work
we’ve done for more than a century, we’ve been presented with an opportunity to live out our
mission and serve the needs of our community, in collaboration, differently than we ever have
before.

“There are very few agencies that get presented with the ability to create, to be innovative, to build,
to develop, in partnership with others; YWCA Dayton is in a place, and a season, to embrace that.
It’s taken us 150 years to get here, and we’re excited and ready to be agile in meeting the Miami
Valley’s needs for the next 150 years.”

The campus will open in phases, with initial use focused on administrative functions, youth
programming, and community rentals, including long-term small business leases. “Our first priority is to get this right. There are very few organizations that are afforded the opportunity to think about their mission in a way that feeds community,” Isom said. “We have built a task force of local community leaders and stakeholders, from funding to strategic planning tooperations, and the support we’ve received from the Huber Heights community is palpable.”

That includes the property’s first onsite service project – a reflection courtyard and friendship fire ring
– installed in July 2020 by Huber Heights youth Micah and Sarai Combs as their Eagle Scout
capstone. Sarai is a member of the first class of female Eagle Scouts in the Miami Valley; the
siblings’ project, with an in-kind value of more than $4,000, took 26 volunteer hours to complete.

Founded in 1870, YWCA Dayton has been at the forefront of the most critical social movements —
from voting rights and civil rights, to affordable housing and pay equity, to violence prevention and
health care reform.

At YWCA Dayton, we:

• Operate the only domestic violence shelters and rape crisis center in Montgomery and
Preble Counties, as well as the area’s longest-running 24/7 crisis hotline: 937-222-SAFE,
which responds to more than 7,000 calls every year.
• Provide affordable housing and support services for women and families who are victims of
abuse or experiencing sudden or chronic homelessness. In 2020, 598 individuals in 291
households were helped by YW housing programs.
• Empower teens to explore and achieve their highest potential through Girls LEAD!, a
signature curriculum of educational and prevention outreach programming, and engage men and boys in preventing violence against women and girls through AMEND Together, an in-
school prevention education program. More than 300 youth were served in 2020.

• Advocate for legislative priorities that address racial justice and civil rights, women’s
economic empowerment, and women’s health and safety. In 2019-20, YWCA Dayton
endorsed 27 pieces of legislation and met with 26 public officials.
