14th annual All You Can Eat Chocolate Party

Betty Blose, owner of Bellbrook Chocolate Shoppe, located in Cross Pointe Center, and her staff will host their 14th annual All You Can Eat Chocolate Party this Sunday, Oct 27th from 4-6pm. The workroom counters will be filled with caramels, turtles, chocolate covered nuts and chews, shortbread cookies, peppermint bark, chocolate peanut brittle and more. There is nothing fancy about this event, it’s just hundreds of pounds of chocolate there for the tasting!

If you would like to take some home, you can purchase an empty box and fill it from the chocolate buffet with as many goodies as you can get in it ~ make sure the lid goes on! It’s a fun, casual event and will be helping women and men in our own area——double sweet!!!!

Your $20 admission includes a bottled water, which you’ll need to wash down the chocolate treats. A portion of ticket sales will go to Miami Valley Hospital Foundation for massage therapy to help cancer patients at MVH.

Beavercreek Community Theatre’s Edge of the Creek Productions will present “Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead,” by Burt V. Royal. The spoof of the Charles Schulz comic strip “Peanuts” follows the original gang a decade later as their beloved beagle companion dies. A missing pen pal, an abused pianist, a pyromaniac ex-girlfriend, two drunk cheerleaders, a homophobic quarterback, a burnt out Buddhist and a drama queen sister fill the show’s ensemble.

“’ It is a window into how they could have evolved if they’d been allowed to grow into adolescence. This play shows us just how hard it is to be stuck between childhood and adulthood,” said Director Matt Curry. “When Charlie Brown’s dog dies he starts questioning his family and friends about what they think happens after death. Nobody can provide him with any solace, save for one–the target of the groups’ harsh bullying and torment. This relationship, forged from hope and love, has disastrous consequences careening towards a poignant and heartfelt ending.”

“This play’s subject matter requires a certain level of maturity and tolerance. The audience must be willing to let these character’s lives develop. There is strong language, sexuality, intense bullying, explosive emotions, drug use, and rebellion,” Curry said. Edge of the Creek Productions is an “edgy” branch of BCT, created to broaden the scope of their traditional season of family-oriented productions.

‘Don’t Slip’ on Dip Spit

You are a person that enjoys music that is light to the ears. When you are having dinner with that special loved one, you light the candles on the table and softly start that smooth music that only seals the deal of making the night perfect. How about this-you are person that enjoys soft rock. You are at the doctor’s office and you start to Michael Bolton belt out love songs. C’mon, you enjoy it. You try to hide it. You scoff at the fact that you are sitting there listening to someone who lose their cool whenever he is on the television. I’m not a fan, personally, but hey-the cat has fans.

Well…this isn’t going to be that type of music listening.

Two men comprise the hip hop duo Dip Spit, and they are about to drop their names in the music scene’s hat with their first LP, Fight Music for Boot & Fist. DipSpit, and DJ DumptRuck make up the band (their actual names have been made to be a secret). They started their bond for music when both of them attended Wright State University. They attended some of the same classes, including some poetry sessions. DipSpit moved to Chicago where he followed his love for poetry. “It was really amazing to be around all those poets”, DipSpit explained. “There would be poetry slams that I would attend that really were out of this world with how quickly folks could make up such amazing work.”

After a couple of years, DipSpit became unhappy with being in the hustle and bustle of the Windy City and decided to come back home. When he returned, he started to write music and would showcase it with DumptRuck. In return, DumptRuck would also supply music. “We had a blast making music for one another. We would always be trying out stuff for one another. The twosome even would reveal that they have been creating music for the past four years. “We didn’t think about it”, DumptRuck says when asked about not releasing the music. “We were just cool with only having it for ourselves.”

However, the pair realized that they have some really good work that they felt would be good enough to possibly be released. So, they started to slowly hitting the open mic circuit, with mostly performing at that now recently closed down RnR Playdate, which was held weekly on Sunday nights at One Eyed Jacks in Fairborn, Ohio. “We really felt like we really had a home at that open mic”, DipSpit declares. “We really developed our stage presence there.” The crowd reaction to each of their sets grew more and more appreciative to their unique presence and unique show. Both men hit the stage with such bravado and swagger. They throw every ounce of themselves into their show. DumptRuck’s plain white t-shirts that have a hand written statement written on them quickly become soaked with sweat. Dip Spit is a mildly quiet guy till his heads touch a microphone. He then turns into a fast-spitting lyricist that immediately gets the crowd into the show with him.

A year will be removed with the release of Fight Music for Boot & Fist. Dip Spit isn’t made for everyone, and the duo is well aware. Their lyrics dive into the pool of fun and carefree immaturity. Some would quickly think that the band Tenacious D had some part of this in the way of influence. What really stands out, however, is the music that accompanies the lyrics. Both Dip Spit and DumptRuck cite that have dove into the vast collection of hip hop from the early beginnings of its introduction into the music world. Run DMC, Eric B. & Rakim, Public Enemy are a few of the artists that they grew up listening to. The album itself contains a bootleg feel that is perfect for these two. The titles of the songs themselves also will give the listener the impression that this duo doesn’t really take things seriously, including a sampled Dropkick Murphy ‘Shipping Up To Boston’ in the first track ‘Hulk Hogan Sex Tape’. However, when you dive into the LP, you quickly realize that the guys are in fact taking their craft seriously. It’s a fine line of just goofing off and presenting polished work. Dip Spit manages to have their cake and eat it too. As I mentioned earlier, the music isn’t made for everyone. The duo even will tell you that it isn’t. However-you can’t help but let go and enjoy this offering. It’s almost genius.

Four years in the making, Fight Music for Boot & Fist will be released for the masses in all its glory and Dip Spit, DJ DumptRuck are proud of the work that they have done. “It’s been a long time coming, and we are excited to give the people this album”, Dip Spit says.

Dayton-Dip Spit has arrived. You have been warned. Or has the band always says-“Don’t Slip.”

This Saturday night, Dip Spit will be also celebrating their new work by throwing their event, Fist Fest 2013. Alt-Country/Punk Rock singer Christopher Salyer, the amazingly talented Trey Stone, and Indie rockers Monkey with Bone will also be performing at Oregon Express along with the duo. Clothes That Work and Limited Brands Foundation Present 13th Annual Fashioning Futures Sweet Success Luncheon

Clothes That Work will celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the organization at the Fashioning Futures luncheon on October 24, 2013. This uplifting event features men and women client-models wearing gently used clothing from Clothes That Work. They will share their varied stories and backgrounds with more than 500 luncheon guests at Sinclair Community College’s Ponitz Center.

Clothes That Work provides interview appropriate clothing and personalized confidence building image services for men, women and teens who are preparing to transition from public assistance to employment. Once clients secure a job, they can return and select additional outfits to better prepare them for a new career. Clothes That Work also provides interview training skills, image workshops and practice interview experiences. Last year alone, Clothes That Work served over 800 job seekers.

Plan to join us for our 13^th annual Fashioning Futures Luncheon on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at the Sinclair Conference Center from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. This event is the primary fundraiser for Clothes That Work and helps empower job seekers with clothing, education and opportunity as they move toward greater self-reliance and supports the unique role that Clothes That Work plays in growing the economic vitality of our community.

Kettering Celebrates National Arts and Humanities Month with Arts Bike Ride

The City of Kettering’s Arts Council (KAC) is promoting two arts-related events in October to encourage residence to appreciate and attend the arts. A proclamation for the month-long National Arts and Humanities Month was issued by Kettering Mayor Don Patterson at the September 24^th Kettering City Council Meeting.

Mike Beerbower, KAC President, announced at the meeting plans for the first “Bike the Arts” event on Saturday, October 26^th beginning at 10 a.m. at Rosewood Arts Center, 2655 Olson Drive.

“This 10-mile guided bike tour will offer brief explanations as riders make stops at art installations throughout Kettering including Delco Park, Wenzler Park, Lincoln Park Commons, Kettering Government Center and Indian Riffle Park,” said Beerbower. “The tour will also visit art-related businesses including SPARK Art Studio, We Care Arts, Town & Country Shopping Center and the School of Advertising Arts.”

Cyclists will be treated to refreshments and restroom breaks at various locations and participate in free bicycle safety giveaways from the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission’s Pedal Pals bicycle program. Items include bike pumps, reflector lights, seat covers, backpacks and first aid kits.

The KAC is also partnering with the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance by inviting Kettering residents to attend select performances of Dayton Ballet, Dayton Opera and Dayton Philharmonic performances during the 2013-2014 Signature Season for only $12 per ticket.

The $12 ticket offer is for the October 24-27 performances of Dayton Ballet’s A Range of Motion at the Victoria Theatre; the Dayton Philharmonic’s The Art of Transformation on January 9 and 11, 2014 and Michael Gandolfi and His Garden of Sound on January 10, 2014, both at the Schuster Center; and Dayton Opera’s Hansel and Gretel on February 23, 2014, at the Schuster Center.

New Centerville McDonald’s opens With Free Meals For A Year Giveaway

McDonald’s^® will celebrate the grand opening of a new restaurant at 6270 Far Hills Avenue on Thursday, October 10 at 5 a.m. Construction on the new facility began in July. The new restaurant will include numerous features designed to enhance the customer experience, from quality products to speed of service.

To celebrate the grand opening, McDonald’s will offer coupons for a free meal each week for a year to the first 25 customers at the drive-thru and in the lobby on October 10 beginning at 5 a.m.

The 4,800 square-foot “Arcade” building will seat approximately 104 customers in roomier seating zones. The décor is fresh and vibrant, accented with a natural-colored floor along with contemporary wall coverings in warm orange, yellow and red colors. Flat screen televisions, complimentary Wi-Fi and local photography create a welcoming and familiar environment for guests.

The exterior design draws its primary form from the arcade, a traditional architecture element that defines the front of the restaurant, as well as the main entry. The building’s exterior is a natural progression, departing from the standard double mansard roof building which has been a McDonald’s trademark since 1968.

The Wright Organization began operations at the original restaurant at 6004 Far Hills Avenue in January 1989. The original store continued to operate during construction of the new restaurant until September 28 when employees were transitioned to ready the new restaurant for customers.

Dayton Earns Distinction As A Trail Town

Five Rivers MetroParks will celebrate with the City of Dayton, the Buckeye Trail Association and the North Country Trail Association the official designation of Dayton as “Trail Town”. The event will take place Friday, October 25, at 11:00am at Deeds Point MetroPark. The event is free and open to the public.

The North Country National Scenic Trail and the state-wide Buckeye Trail have partnered to improve access, strengthen interest in outdoor activities, and boost economic benefits by providing recognition to local businesses. Together, they strive to build a community that values outdoor recreation for the health of the environment, the people, and the economy.

“We are so happy to have Dayton as the newest Trail Town along the North Country National Scenic Trail. Dayton is a great example of how an urban area can embrace a trail culture, providing a superb recreational resource for its citizens while benefiting it’s economy and the health of the environment,” said Andrea Ketchmark of North Country Trail Association. “This partnership will do great things for the Trail and for Dayton!”’

“Trail Towns” are built on a relationship between a municipality, the Trail, and its supportive volunteers. For Dayton, the partnership will help to establish and nurture relationships that are mutually beneficial for trail users and the public-at-large within the City of Dayton and the surrounding area.

“We are ecstatic to be only the second city in Ohio to receive this designation,” said Dayton City Commissioner Nan Whaley. “This reinforces our ongoing efforts to make Dayton a vibrant community that realizes the importance of outdoor recreation.”

The Buckeye and North Country National Scenic Trails are co-aligned through the Dayton area, following the Mad River and Great Miami Recreation Trails. The trails are marked by 2×6 inch blue blazes along the route.

The North Country Trail is the longest of the 11 National Scenic Trails and stretches 4,600 miles from North Dakota to New York and follows much of the Buckeye Trail as it wraps through Ohio. Crossing seven northern states, the trail is not only a national asset, but it is accessible from many communities making it a valuable local recreational resource.

The Buckeye Trail is a 1,400 mile trail circumnavigating the state travelling through 48 counties. Volunteers of the Miami Rivers Chapter of the Buckeye Trail Association help maintain sections of these trails in the Dayton area, working closely with land managers from Five Rivers MetroParks and Miami Conservancy District.

“The Buckeye Trail Association is excited to partner with the community of Dayton, one of the largest and most supportive along Ohio’s State Trail,” shared Andrew Bashaw of the Buckeye Trail Association. “By working together we hope to promote this amenity to the quality of life around Dayton and encourage Dayton area residents to engage in using the Buckeye and North Country National Scenic Trail nearby and around Ohio!”

Working together to provide this premier off-road walking path is a partnership of trail volunteers, land managing agencies, the National Park Service, private foundations, civic organizations and businesses.

The Special Wish Run

This family friendly 5k run/walk will take place on November 2, 2013 at Island MetroPark. All proceeds will benefit ASW and the granting of Special Wishes to local children d or adolescent (birth through age 20) who has been diagnosed by a physician with a life-threatening disorder. The Dayton Chapter of A Special Wish Foundation serves Montgomery, Greene, Miami, Darke, Shelby, and Mercer counties. Over the past 29 years, our chapter has granted over 1,500 wishes to children living in its six county area.

Pre-registration (before October 26, 2013) is $25/person; Kids 8 years and younger are free, but still need to register for the event. Registration must be done by printing out a registration form and sending it to ASW. Late or day-of registration is $30/person, but a race t-shirt is not guaranteed.

About the instructor:Marisha Mukerjee holds a Master of Arts in Art History from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and a Masters in Writingfrom Northwestern University focused on Screen and Stage. She also has a diploma in filmmaking from Le Femis, Paris, France. She co-produced the feature film The Grind as well as countless festival clad shorts and was post-production coordinator for Elisabeth Murdoch’s production company, Shine International. Marisha was the Head of the Film Faculty and Associate Director of the International Summer School of Scotland, and taught Screenwriting at Northwestern. Previously she has worked as a Feature Location Manager for Vertigo Films and Finelight films UK, and worked as a Development Executive for Ashridge Films UK in India. Marisha is co-founder of Relief Productions Theater Group and Madrina Films. She currently works for the Executive Producer of Justified/FX and was previously Development Coordinator at Cineflix Studios. Currently Marisha is also a writer/playwright. She is currently producing on a web series called Some Assembly Required starring Mallory Moye (Hart of Dixie), recently had her current play on Thomas Paine read at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, and is head of FEMPIRE an all female development group in LA. She is currently working on several television projects (by night of course!).

2013 Dayton Music Fest: 5 Bands To Checkout During The Weekend’s Event

In 2004, the Dayton music scene was comprised of tremendous acts playing all around the town each and other night. Problem was there were folks who lived in town that still didn’t know just how good the music was here. Dan Clayton, Andy Ingram, and Shawn Johnson went to work and they wanted to showcase the extravagant talent in a unique way. Thus the Dayton Music Fest was started. Going in its 9^th year now, Dayton Music Fest is now in the hands of Dayton’s own Don Thrasher and Kyle Melton. The two have assembled 32 acts ready to perform in various locations throughout Dayton for Friday and Saturday night. Each set will undoubtedly give the crowds that fill the venues a diverse collection of talent that shines brighter than most cities. Here are 5 bands you need to check out. For some, these acts are staples. For others that haven’t seen these acts-you are in for a treat.

Noah + The Rescue Radio

Outstanding blues guitarist Noah Wotherspoon has built quite the resume, developing a following all around the world with his performances. He also has opened for Leon Russell, Latimore, and Boz Scaggs. Wotherspoon has multiple appearances at the Chicago Blues Festival, The Blues Masters at the Crossroads Festival in Salina, Kansas. He has now expanded his mastery of blues and has added Tom Rastikas on bass and Josh Johnson on drums to make up Noah + The Rescue Radio. The band’s lo-fi sound will feature influence from ’60s British pop/rock along with Wotherspoon’s signature guitar play. Noah + The Rescue Radio will be performing at Canal Street Tavern, which will suit the band’s style just perfectly. Showtime is tonight at 11.

Tim Pritchard & The Boxcar Suite

Tim Pritchard and the Boxcar Suite’s shows are a music lovers dream. Their jangly sound present a little bit for everyone. Fans of country and fans of rock will come together in unison with the incredible guitar play from Pritchard himself, along with Tony Moore and bassist Phil Caviness. The lyrics of the songs according to the band are ‘bittersweet and beyond’. You can see and hear for yourselves at Canal Street Tavern Saturday night at 10:30pm.

Red Hot Rebellion

For those who to catch a set from a group that are low-key, chilled out-you aren’t going to find it with Red Hot Rebellion. You are not going to get anywhere near that. You will be witness to a band that play at a frenzied pace, with no know having their shirts dry. This punk/metal hybrid, Ramones influenced band will be thrashing the stage, giving the audience all the more reason to rise up and let their hair down. For the faint of heart-you may want to stay away. For those who want to rock-get yourself down to Blind Bob’s on Saturday night. Showtime is at 10:30.

Meghna & The Majority

We can’t forget the ladies that will be highlighted during the Dayton Music Fest. Meghna & The Majority’s sets have included mind- blowing renditions of Adele’s Skyfall and Florence and the Machine’s Dog Days Are Over. Don’t be fooled, however. The band will also play originals that will be infused with jazz, country, and folk. Meghna’s lyrics dive into her relationships from the present and the past, good and bad. Each lyric sung oozes bluesy tones. Meghna & The Majority is perfect for all ages to sit back and enjoy. Catch them 1pm Saturday afternoon at the Midwest Outdoor Experience.

TEAM VOID

TEAM VOID has recently released their second album ‘Robot Killer’, which is full of their vintage, surf rock sound. These Luchador- mask wearing quarter are simply a pleasure to listen to. Nothing but instrumental play, expect to be dazzled with an onslaught of seamless guitar play and superb horn play. TEAM VOID will be nothing like you have ever seen. The masks will unquestionably throw off newcomers to the band, but will quickly forget it once you start to hear the band play. The band will be closing out the night at Oregon Express on Saturday around midnight. Perfect timing for their set.

Grand Opening for Newly Expanded Clothes That Work Boutique Thursday

Clothes That Work, a local Dayton nonprofit organization, invites the public to a Grand Opening of the newly expanded Boutique on Thursday, October 3, 2013. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 10 am and the Boutique will be open from 10am to 6pm

The CTW Boutique, located at the Montgomery County Job Center near the CTW offices, is an upscale resale shop open to the public featuring high quality clothing from many top designers and retailers. When donated clothing is too colorful, too dressy or not appropriate for interview or work situations, CTW sells it in the Boutique and online at eBay.

“At its core, this project supports greater earned revenue that will allow mission driven services for Montgomery County job seekers to increase,” said Paula Cosby, executive director of Clothes That Work. “We expect increased revenue of nine percent, allowing us to serve an additional 882 job seekers in the next five years.”

“We looked at several other location options in the Miami Valley, but ultimately the Job Center matches our mission here at Clothes That Work,” added Cosby.

The expansion, which has doubled the size of the Boutique, also features eight designated parking spots at the Job Center exclusively for Boutique shoppers as well as an exterior entrance.

CTW worked with architectural firm Roll & Associates, Inc. and interior designer Elements IV on the project.

Warped Wing Brewing Co. Announces December Opening

Warped Wing Brewing Company (WWBC) is excited to announce its plan to open a full-scale production craft brewery in the heart of downtown Dayton. The new brewery will be located at 26 Wyandot Street, former site of the Buckeye Brass & Iron Foundry, circa 1911. Scheduled to launch in late 2013, Warped Wing will brew and distribute its draught and canned beers to restaurants, taverns, and retailers throughout Dayton and surrounding markets.

Warped Wing is operated by four Co-Founders (pictured left to right): Joe Waizmann, President, John Haggerty, Brewmaster, Nick Bowman, Sales & Marketing and Mike Stover, CFO.

The WWBC team believes their passion for craft beer coupled with their extensive industry experience will bring a unique approach to the local beer scene. We also share enthusiasm for local community development and are committed to bringing back well-crafted beers that Daytonians and Ohioans can embrace.

Warped Wing will distinguish itself through its brewing philosophy inspired by Dayton’s rich history of innovation and invention. WWBC is committed to bringing that same spirit forward into today’s American craft beer scene by introducing new proprietary beer styles and brewing their own “warped” interpretations of existing styles. Warped Wing will also maintain a focus on creating unique seasonal and specialty beers.
Their brewing philosophy is shaped around co-founder, John Haggerty’s lifelong passion for the art and science of brewing. A German educated brewmaster, John brings two decades of commercial brewing expertise to WWBC. His career in brewing has spanned small and large breweries in the U.S. Haggerty states “As far as brewing philosophy goes we are essentially going to make well-balanced beers that show off the various ingredients when appropriate (i.e. hoppy when it is supposed to be hoppy and malty when it is supposed to be malty, etc., etc.) Additionally, we will follow sound production theory butwill take liberties and break rules regarding process and recipe formulation when it makes sense and is appropriate to do so.”

Warped Wing will also differentiate itself in the market with its unique 4 pack 16 ounce can packaging. The choice to offer their beers in cans is multifold:

Their desire to give a nod to Ermal Fraze, inventor of the pop-top can in Dayton.
The portability of cans provides customers convenience and easier access to more beer occasions.
The 16 ounce traditional pint offers our retail customers with limited draught space the ability to serve a true pint of Warped Wing beer. Waizmann adds, “We hope our cans will also inspire our beer friends to dust off their pint glass collections at home”

In addition to distributing their beer, WWBC will feature an industrial-style Tasting Room where guests can enjoy Warped Wing beers. Customers are also welcome to carry-in or have food delivered to the brewery. Waizmann adds, “Our guests can expect a unique visual experience from the moment they walk through the front door with the industrial feel and open brewery layout. Once inside they will be able to sample our various beer offerings while appreciating views of the downtown skyline and cathedral of stainless steel.”

The Warped Wing name is derived from one of Dayton’s famous inventions, “Wing Warping”, a technology invented by the Wright Bros which made controlled flight possible.

Bowman states “When selecting our name we wanted something that tied into the region but also reflected our teams’ desire to bring new styles to the category”

The Warped Wing mark/logo (wing) was created to pay homage to the “Wing Warping” technology. The twisted wing logo is based on a drawing by James Pettigrew (1834 – 1908), a Scottish Naturalist. The Wright Brothers studied Pettigrew’s work specifically around how birds used their wings to help guide themselves in flight.

Over The Rhine Returns to Victoria Theatre Ticket Contest

The husband and wife team of pianist/guitarist/bassist Linford Detweiler and vocalist/guitarist Karin Bergquist make up the core of the Cincinnati inspired musical group OVER THE RHINE. Performing for over 20 years, they developed a large and intensely loyal following in their hometown, before they independently released their first two albums, Till We Have Faces (1991) and Patience (1992). Their new double album’s (Meet Me at the Edge of the World) effortlessly engaging, timelessly resonant songs more than justify such loyalty, once again validating OVER THE RHINE’s enduring musical mission. Their 2012 debut at the Victoria Theatre has led to a return engagement this Saturday, Oct 5th at 8:00pm.

Opening the show will be Akron native Tim Easton. Now a Nashville, Tennessee-based guitarist and singer-songwriter playing musician. His latest album “Not Cool” is described as “kind of a 50′s, Sun Studio thing, kind of a rock and roll thing.
