Dayton PRIDE Celebration cancelled for 2020

July 11, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

In a statement released by the LGBT Center, PRIDE 2020 is officially cancelled:

“It is with heavy hearts that the Greater Dayton LGBT Center Board of Directors has decided to cancel in-person LGBTQIA+ Pride for Dayton this year. We originally postponed the events for Pride weekend from June to August hoping the local effects of the COVID pandemic would have been minimized by that time. Unfortunately, it is painfully obvious that we are not able to hold large gatherings and parades such as Pride without risking the health and wellbeing of our community. Although it is never easy to make a decision such as this, we decided that your health is the most important thing this year.

Of course, we can’t just skip recognition of Pride during 2020 so we will be shifting our August 22 celebration from in-person to online. We are still putting plans together, but we will be holding a televised and Facebook Live event from 1pm to 3pm. The celebration will be similar to our Pride Stage Show featuring local speakers and entertainment. Please stay tuned for more information and plan to join us online August 22nd!”

With an estimated  5000 people packing Courthouse Square for this annual event, the cancellation isn’t much of a surprise, as the pandemic makes it just unsafe to proceed. Normally a 3 day celebration, with a bar crawl on Friday, parade and festival on Saturday and Sunday is the PFLAG 5K and the Spikes and Heels kickball tournament.

PFLAG has decided they are able to move forward with their Running with Pride 5K on Sunday, Aug 23rd.  The race steps off at 9am from Welcome Park on Edwin C. Moses Blvd.

Dayton Live Announces Two Week Run For HAMILTON in ‘21-‘22 Season,

July 8, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Dayton Live is pleased to announce it will welcome the first Dayton engagement of HAMILTON to the Benjamin & Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center next year in the 2021-2022 Season. In addition, Dayton Live announces a new lineup for the upcoming Premier Health Broadway in Dayton Season. Due to closures and restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020-2021 season will be delayed, launching in January 2021 with slightly revised programming.

“We’re thrilled to announce HAMILTON’s premiere engagement in Dayton,” said Ty Sutton, President & CEO of Dayton Live (formerly Victoria Theatre Association), the nonprofit arts organization that presents the Premier Health Broadway in Dayton Series at the Schuster Center. “We’ve been working to confirm dates for this incredible theatrical powerhouse since 2018. In fact, the question I get more often than any other is when will HAMILTON be here? Now we can officially confirm: HAMILTON is coming to Dayton.”

HAMILTON is the story of America then, told by America now. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway, HAMILTON has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theatre—a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education. With book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire,HAMILTON is based on Ron Chernow’s acclaimed biography. It has won Tony®, Grammy®, and Olivier Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and an unprecedented special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors.

HAMILTON will play two weeks of performances (16 shows) in 2022 at the Benjamin & Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center. On-sale dates for single tickets and group tickets will be announced at a later date. The best way to guarantee access to tickets for the limited engagement is to purchase Season Tickets for the full 2020-2021 Premier Health Broadway in Dayton lineup, which will begin in January 2021, and renew your Season Tickets for 2021-2022 when the time comes. Premier Health Broadway in Dayton Season Ticket Holders will have access to HAMILTON tickets before they are available to the general public. Visit daytonlive.org/hamilton-faq for answers to frequently asked questions.

A REVISED PREMIER HEALTH BROADWAY IN DAYTON SEASON

“The shutdown of Broadway in New York City has had a wide-reaching effect on performing arts centers and Broadway presenters around the country,” Sutton said. “In addition to not having a clear picture when our venues will be open again, nearly all Broadway tours have closed at least temporarily and are not going to be playing in the fall. This necessitated a great deal of juggling on everyone’s part and I’m happy to say we retained most of our season, and also were able add a huge Broadway hit – and one of my favorite titles – DEAR EVAN HANSEN.”

The winner of six 2017 Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, DEAR EVAN HANSEN features a book by Tony Award® winner Steven Levenson, a score by Grammy®, Tony® and Academy Award® winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman), and direction by four-time Tony Award® nominee Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal).

Declared “One of the most remarkable shows in musical theater history” by the Washington Post’s Peter Marks, DEAR EVAN HANSEN opened at the Music Box Theatre to rave reviews on December 4, 2016. There, it has broken all box office records and struck a chord with audiences and critics alike, including New York Times critic Jesse Green, who, in his May 2019 re-review of the show, declared it “more and more ingenious with each viewing. It is more hopeful than ever.”

The Grammy Award®-winning Original Broadway Cast Recording of DEAR EVAN HANSEN, produced by Atlantic Records, was released in February 2017, making an extraordinary debut on the Billboard 200 and entering the chart at #8 – the highest charting debut position for an original cast album since 1961 – and went on to win the 2018 Grammy Award® for Best Musical Theatre Album. A deluxe version of the cast recording, including six bonus tracks and a pop cover from Katy Perry of “Waving through a Window” is now available digitally.

In addition to winning six 2017 Tony Awards® and a 2018 Grammy Award®, DEAR EVAN HANSEN has won numerous other awards, including the 2017 Drama League Award for Outstanding Musical Production and for the off-Broadway production, two Obie Awards, a Drama Desk Award, and two Outer Critics Circle Awards and two Helen Hayes Awards. DEAR EVAN HANSEN is also the winner of the Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards three years running, and was just proclaimed the Best Long-Running Show and the Best Touring Production in the 2019 Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards.

DEAR EVAN HANSEN, produced by Stacey Mindich, features scenic design by David Korins, projection design by Peter Nigrini, costume design by Emily Rebholz, lighting design by Japhy Weideman, sound design by Nevin Steinberg, and hair design by David Brian Brown. Music supervision, orchestrations and additional arrangements are by Alex Lacamoire. Ben Cohn is the Associate Music Supervisor. Vocal arrangements and additional arrangements are by Justin Paul. Danny Mefford is the choreographer.

Casting by Tara Rubin Casting/Xavier Rubiano. Sash Bischoff, Adam Quinn and Danny Sharron are the Associate Directors. Judith Schoenfeld is the Production Supervisor. US General Management 101 Productions.

Here is the complete lineup for the 2020-2021 Premier Health Broadway in Dayton Season:

A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have. Evan Hansen is about to get the one thing he’s always wanted: a chance to finally fit in. DEAR EVAN HANSEN is the deeply personal and profoundly contemporary musical about life and the way we live it. DEAR EVAN HANSEN has struck a remarkable chord with audiences and critics everywhere, including The Washington Post who says DEAR EVAN HANSEN is “one of the most remarkable shows in musical theatre history.” The New York Times calls it “a gut-punching, breathtaking knockout of a musical.” And “NBC Nightly News” declares the musical “an anthem resonating on Broadway and beyond.” DEAR EVAN HANSEN features a book by Tony Award® winner Steven Levenson, a score by Grammy®, Tony® and Academy Award® winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman), and direction by four-time Tony Award® nominee Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal).

DAYTON LIVE COVID-19 TICKET GUARANTEE

Arts patrons all over the nation and beyond are concerned about how and when performances will again take place.

“We are eager for our venues to reopen and welcome you to life-inspiring performances,” explained Sutton.  “But we want each of our patrons to feel safe and comfortable attending performances in our fabulous venues. Rest assured, we will be doing everything in our power to make your experience with our venues feel positive and safe, from extended cleaning regimens to observation of all state and federal guidelines. As these recommendations and requirements become clear, we will communicate them to you.”

To this end, Dayton Live has issued a COVID-19 Ticket Guarantee. If, once Dayton Live’s venues are open and performances are again filling the calendar, a patron feels COVID-19 conditions make it unsafe to attend a performance/event, they’ll have several options starting 30 days before your performance. For more details on this ticket guarantee, go to daytonlive.org/ticket-guarantee.

This COVID-19 Ticket Guarantee applies to performances/events presented by Dayton Live or its nonprofit resident companies. Greater Dayton LGBTQ+ Her/History Nomination

July 2, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

According to one of the founders, Jerry Mallicoat, “the Greater Dayton LGBTQ Her/History Project began in 2019 as a way to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising by capturing, preserving and recognizing history and trailblazers for equality in our local area LGBTQ community. As we began discovering important stories, people and events, we quickly realized that it should be continued annually so that we can preserve our local her/history for future generations to understand how LGBTQ people have helped make our community more equal and affirming. History is happening every day, and we want to be sure it gets professionally preserved a. That’s why we will install much of the information and memorabilia we are collecting at Wright State University Library where it can be protected and searched through their catalogs, and inform future generations about how integral we have been to our community.”
Last year they profiled the pivotal historical people, places and events in our Dayton LGBT community. The October award ceremony held at The Brightside honored many including, The Rubi Girls, lesbian activists Nancy Grigsby, Wendy Stiver, Elizabeth Wiley and Liz Valenti, Gay activists like Leon Bay, Jim McCarthy and Rodney Veal as well as Allies.
Not it’s time to nominate a person, place or event that has been pivotal to the LGBTQ+ history in the Dayton area during the last 50 years.  People can make nominations by July 31 using the link below, and they can indicate whether they have memorabilia to donate. Criteria for nomination are included on the nomination form.
Below are criteria that may help you with your submission. Please submit your nomination by July 31, 2020.
Categories include:

1. LGBTQ+ people who have been pivotal in helping to make the greater Dayton community a better place for everyone.

2. LGBTQ+ people who have been instrumental in advancing equality for the LGBTQ community.

3. Pivotal events that helped advance equality or raise consciousness about LGBTQ+ issues.

4. Places/buildings/locations that have been pivotal or important in our local LGBTQ+ history.

Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) Starts July 1

July 1, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Beginning July 1, the Ohio Development Services Agency and local Community Action Agencies and nonprofits will help income-eligible Ohioans maintain their utility service through the Home Energy Assistance Summer Crisis Program. The program helps eligible Ohioans pay an electric bill, purchase an air conditioning unit or fan, or pay for central air conditioning repairs. This year, the program will run from July 1 until September 30, 2020.

“This year, we’ve extended the length of the program and expanded eligibility requirements so we can help more Ohioans during this health crisis,” Lydia Mihalik, director of the Ohio Development Services Agency said. “We’re working with our local partners every day to help Ohioans in need.”

In 2019 more than 20,500 families across Ohio were assisted through the Home Energy Assistance Summer Crisis Program.

The Summer Crisis Program assists low-income households with an older household member (60 years or older), or households that can provide physician documentation that cooling assistance is needed for a household member’s health. Examples of conditions can include lung disease, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, asthma, etc. This year, households that were diagnosed with COVID-19 in 2020, have a disconnect notice, have been shut off, or are trying to establish new service on their electric bill are also eligible for assistance.

Ohioans can visit energyhelp.ohio.gov to start their application prior to their required appointment. This year appointments can be held over the phone or in person at a local partner Agency. To find an agency in your area or to schedule an appointment call, (800) 282-0880.

Eligible households can receive up to $500 if they are a customer of a regulated utility, or $800 if they are a customer of unregulated utilities such as electric cooperatives and municipal utilities. The assistance is applied to their utility bill, or to purchase an air conditioning unit or fan, or pay for central air conditioning repairs. Ohioans must have a gross income at or below 175% of the federal poverty guidelines to qualify for assistance. For a family of four the annual income must be at or below $45,850.00.

Also new this year, Ohioans enrolled in the Percentage of Income Payment Plan Plus Program (PIPP) who meet the above criteria may be eligible for assistance towards their default PIPP payment, first PIPP payment, central air conditioning repairs, or may receive an air conditioning unit and/or fan.

For more information about the Summer Crisis Program are available at energyhelp.ohio.govor by calling (800) 282-0880.

This event will focus on his love of summer ingredients and cooking techniques.”

DAI To Reopen, Oktoberfest Cancelled

June 30, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

The Dayton Art Institute (DAI), closed since March 13 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has announced it will reopen to members on Friday, July 10 and to the general public on Friday, July 17. The museum will reopen with limited hours of 11 a.m.–5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, noon–5 p.m. on Sundays.

“After nearly fourth months apart, we are thrilled to finally welcome our members and the community back to the museum,” said DAI Director and CEO Michael R. Roediger. “The safety of both our staff and guests has been of the utmost importance, and the public will see a number of measures in place to ensure that everyone has a safe and positive experience at the museum.”

The museum also announced that, due to ongoing uncertainties related to COVID-19 and large gatherings, it will cancel all three of its 2020 Signature Events–Art Ball, Bourbon & Bubbles and Oktoberfest. Art Ball and Bourbon & Bubbles had previously been postponed, and Oktoberfest was scheduled to take place September 25–27.

“The decision to cancel our Signature Events, especially Oktoberfest, was a tremendously difficult one to make,” Roediger said. “Not only do they bring together so many people from throughout the region, but they are also our biggest fundraisers and contribute significant income to our operating budget each year.”

The DAI is asking those who purchased Bourbon & Bubbles tickets to consider donating the value of the tickets to the museum; the financial impact of COVID-19 on the museum is expected to exceed one million dollars this year. Ticket holders who would like to receive a refund should send requests via email to[email protected].

Roediger added, “Rest assured that Oktoberfest, as well as Art Ball and Bourbon & Bubbles, will be back, bigger and better than ever, in 2021. Oktoberfest, which was established in 1971, will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next year. Through all of this, our event sponsors have continued to show tremendous support for the museum, and we will not let this setback diminish these community traditions.” The cancellation of the museum’s Signature Events does not affect wedding and event rentals at the museum.

The museum will launch a special “Virtual Oktoberfest” fundraiser in August, offering a limited-edition 2020 Oktoberfest package that includes an exclusive t-shirt and mug, as well as other unique items. More details will be announced in July, with updates and additional information posted at daytonartinstitute.org/oktoberfest. The DAI extends a special thanks to Bonbright Distributors, which will continue as Presenting Sponsor of the Virtual Oktoberfest.

When the museum reopens on July 10, new policies and safety measures will be in place to protect staff and guests, as recommended by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Ohio Department of Health. These include:

  • Physical distancing measures to ensure guests remain six feet from others not in their group
  • All staff and guests will be required to wear face coverings while visiting the museum
  • Enhanced cleaning procedures in place throughout the museum
  • Protective shields installed at the museum’s Guest Services Desk

All museum tours will be self-guided, in-person programs and interactive activities will not be available at this time, and The Lange Family Experiencenter will remain closed.

More information about museum policies and procedures, as well as planning a visit, will be available at daytonartinstitute.org/visit and posted to the museum’s social media pages.

The DAI’s Museum Store will also reopen on July 10, and the Special ExhibitionSamurai, Ghosts and Lovers: Yoshitoshi’s Complete 100 Aspects of the Moon has been extended through September 13. The Focus Exhibitions Photographs from the Collection, Swashbuckling Samurai and In the Company of Friends: The Kettering and Patterson Legacy will also be on view when the DAI reopens.

“We’re especially excited to be able to extend the Samurai, Ghosts and Loversexhibition, which had been on view for less than three weeks when the museum closed,” said DAI Chief Curator Jerry Smith. “Many expressed disappointment about not having gotten a chance to see it, and we look forward to welcoming the community back to explore this amazing collection.”

Advance tickets are not required to visit the museum, but capacity may be limited in some collection galleries and the Special Exhibition. Museum general admission, which includes the collection galleries and all exhibitions, is $15 adults, $10 seniors (60+), active military and groups (10 or more), $5 students (18+ w/ID) and youth (ages 7-17), free for children (ages 6 & younger) and museum members.

Tour de Donut and Donut Jam Cancel 2020 Event

June 26, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

The 2020 Tour de Donut and the Donut Jam are cancelled due to the Coronavirus. The Tour de Donut was originally scheduled for Saturday, August 29th, and Donut Jam was to take place on Friday, August 28th and Saturday, August 29th.

The cancellation of these events is due to the restrictions that the State of Ohio has placed on large mass gatherings and the uncertainty of when these restrictions will be lifted. There are a lot of moving parts with an event of this magnitude and many people travel from all over the country to participate. The committee felt this was the best decision to keep Miami County communities and residents safe.

“This was not an easy decision to make, but the safety of our riders, runners, volunteers and Miami County residents is our top priority right now.” said Roger Bowersock, Tour de Donut Event Owner. “We are excited to begin planning for 2021 to bring the Donut back bigger and better than ever.

For 2021, the Tour de Donut will take place on Saturday, August 28th with the Donut Jam on August 27th and 28th. Any registrations purchased for 2020 will be honored at the 2021 event.
