Young’s Dairy Celebrates 153rd Birthday

January 10, 2022 By Dayton937

Young’s history begins in 1869 when relatives of the Young Family built the red barn.  Hap Young bought the 60-acre farm and house shortly after the end of World War II.  For the next 10 years, Hap and his three sons, Carl, Bob, and Bill, farmed the 60 acres, plus up to 500 additional rented acres.  They grew grain, raised hogs, and milked cows.

In 1958, the Young Family decided to try to sell  Jersey milk directly to the public.  The first sales room was a modest operation.  They built a 10’ by 10’ room onto the end of the milk room.  The equipment was also modest – some glass jugs, a refrigerator, a cash drawer, and the honor system.  The customer would drive up, open the refrigerator, get his gallon of milk, leave an empty jug and the money, and drive away.

There was a market for farm fresh milk, so in 1960, we build and opened their first real dairy store.  They started dipping ice cream in this store.  They also added other dairy products, like cheese, and snack foods.  This building is attached to the big red barn and is where they make our ice cream today.

In 1993, we added the first activity at Udders & Putters – an 18-hole, farm theme miniature golf course.  1995 marked the first year for our driving range.  1996 saw the addition of a state of the art 9 position batting cage which features softball and hardball pitching machines.

We opened a new full-service restaurant, The Golden Jersey Inn in 1998.  This beautiful timber frame building restaurant features great country style food with a generous helping of friendly service.

In 1999, they built Barnabe’s Walnut Grove, to host group picnics, family reunions and company picnics. Located just south of our popular Udders & Putters area,  Barnabe’s Walnut Grove can easily serve groups with  home cooked meals and delicious homemade ice cream from 50 to over 5,000!  They built an additional 18-hole miniature golf course in 2000 to keep up with the demand for miniature golf.

They added Cowvin’s Fast Slide in 2008 – a 30’ slide with a couple of bumps on the way down. They started making Young’s Farmstead Cheese in July 2009.  Uusing only milk from their herd of Jersey cows to make the cheese, they make Cheddar, Colby, Baby Swiss, Jersey Jack, Pepper Jack, Gouda and Fresh Cheddar Curds.

They continue to make improvements each year, adding  new walking paths, installed ball dryers and a cover home plate area so they can operate the batting cages in the rain and have added to the landscaping around the farm. In 2017 Young’s on the Moove, their food truck hit the road.

To celebrate Young’s Jersey Dairy‘s birthday, from Jan 14- 17 they’ll be offering the following specials:

Dairy Store Specials:

$1.53 off all cones, all burgers, Deep Fried Breaded Cheddar Cheese Curds, Chedda Cheese Crispys, 4 Pack Homemade Buckeyes, 1/2 Gallons of Homemade Ice Cream and kid’s meals

Souvenir Birthday Bowl with the purchase of the 153rd Anniversary Sundae: Includes vanilla and strawberry ice cream with chocolate and strawberry topping, whipped cream, nuts, a cherry and a homemade chocolate chip cookie for $4.95 and a festive ceramic bowl to take home!

Udders & Putters Specials:

$1.53 off games of miniature golf and medium bucket of golf balls

Young’s Farmstead Cheese Specials:
Special sampler package of four kinds of Young’s Farmstead Cheese $7.99
Two different samplers featuring eight of their farmstead cheeses made on our farm from our delicious Jersey cow milk.  Bring home (at least) one of each sampler.

Young’s Jersey Dairy Creates A Drive-Thru!

April 6, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Young’s Jersey Dairy has a new way to serve you at the Dairy Store – A Drive-Thru!
To conform to the current public health rules, they are only taking orders using their newly created drive-thru. They’ve curated their menu to their best selling sandwiches, side orders (cheese curds!), homemade ice cream cones, shakes and sundaes.

When you arrive, follow the signs to the order booth located in front of the Dairy Store in the parking lot, place your order (one of our amazing Staff will be there to take your order), then pull around to the pickup area located in the back of the store and be on your way.

Young’s feels this limited menu is the  is the best way to get through the month of April while keeping Young’s open, giving the ability to keep some of their staff employed, and doing their part to keep everyone safe.

You can also order using their online app and then follow the sign for the pickup area.

https://toasttakeout.com (If you can’t find Young’s Dairy after you downloaded the app, you may need to ‘change your location’ within the app. Type in Yellow Springs and you’ll find them there.) You can use this app to preorder your pints (and breaded curds!). They’ll have your order ready for you when you arrive.

Young’s Annual Hot Fudge Sundae Sale

February 27, 2020 By Lisa Grigsby

Young’s Jersey Dairy felt a good way to say goodbye to winter was to have a Hot Fudge Sundae Celebration as February ends and March starts.

Friday through Sunday at either The Dairy Store or The Golden Jersey Inn a one dip Hot Fudge Sundae is only $3.29!

A two dip Hot Fudge Sundae is only $4.29! You choose the flavor of homemade ice cream you want us to make it from, and they’ll add the hot fudge, whipped cream, nuts, and a cherry! What a deal!

Here are some flavor combinations they have grown fond of over the years. Try one of these or create your own!

Vanilla — just plain vanilla is hard to beat when combined
with the taste of good hot fudge.

Butter Pecan — there is something about the buttery caramel taste, with the pecans that brings out the best in hot fudge taste.

Green Mint Chip  — chocolate and mint, one of the great flavor combinations.

Sea Salty Caramel — the taste salty caramel and  hot chocolate fudge is just amazing.

Black Walnut — for those who like contrasting flavors, try this.

Chocolate P-Nut Butter — the first person to think of putting together the tastes of chocolate and p-nut butter should get some kind of award.
Then top it off with hot fudge for the best sundae of all.

French Vanilla — a slightly more flavorful combination than just vanilla. The French part of the name means the vanilla has egg custard added for a richer texture and taste.

Cookies & Cream or Cookie Dough — these two sweet ice creams only taste better with a generous portion of hot fudge sitting on top!

Cow Patty – Double dark chocolate ice cream with chocolate chips, chocolate cookie pieces and chocolate covered toffee, then topped with hot fudge. Are you kidding me!?

Black Raspberry – when you’re in the mood, the taste of a dark fruit like black raspberry is delicious with hot fudge.

Young’s Jersey Dairy Celebrates 150 Years with $1.50 Specials

January 14, 2019 By Dayton Most Metro

Young’s history begins in 1869 when relatives of the Young Family built the red barn.  Hap Young bought the 60-acre farm and house shortly after the end of World War II.  For the next 10 years, Hap and his three sons, Carl, Bob, and Bill, farmed the 60 acres, plus up to 500 additional rented acres.  They grew grain, raised hogs, and milked cows.

In 1958, the Young Family decided to try to sell our Jersey milk directly to the public.

There was a market for farm fresh milk, so in 1960, they built and opened their first real dairy store.  They started dipping ice cream in this store.  They also added other dairy products, like cheese, and snack foods.  This building is attached to the big red barn and is where they make ice cream today.

Between 1972 and 1990, they added additional parking, more seating for the restaurant, and expanded the kitchen area to keep up with the increased demand for sandwiches and meals.  Their last large addition to The Dairy Store was in the spring of 1990 when they doubled the inside seating capacity and added a meeting room.

In 1993, they added the first activity at Udders & Putters – an 18-hole, farm theme miniature golf course.  1995 marked the first year for our driving range.  1996 saw the addition of a state of the art 9 position batting cage which features softball and hardball pitching machines.

They opened a new full-service restaurant, The Golden Jersey Inn in 1998.  This beautiful timber frame building restaurant features great country style food with a generous helping of friendly service.

In 1999, they built Barnabe’s Walnut Grove, a perfect place to have a group picnic, family reunion, class reunion, company picnic or any other function.  Located just south of the popular Udders & Putters area,  Barnabe’s Walnut Grove can easily serve groups with our home cooked meals and delicious homemade ice cream from 50 to over 5,000!  All group picnics include a wristband good for all day entertainment – miniature golf, batting cages, driving range, Cowvin’s Kiddie Corral, Moovers & Shakers and seasonally Cowvin’s Corny Maze and Wagon Ride on the Farm!

They built an additional 18-hole miniature golf course in 2000 to keep up with the demand for miniature golf and for our large groups of picnic customers. Other additions included Cowvin’s Corny Maze in one of their cornfields, complete with a wagon ride to and from the Maze.  They added Cowvin’s Fast Slide in 2008 – a 30’ slide with a couple of bumps on the way down.  Lots of fun for children and adults (minimum height of 42”).  Cowvin’s Kiddie Corral is designed for  younger Guests and features bounce-house, little tractors that can be pedaled around a wooden track, a corn pit (instead of sand pit) to play in, little slides, hay bales and more.  This activity is located next to the batting cages at Udders & Putters.

They started making Young’s Farmstead Cheese in July 2009.  Using only milk from their herd of Jersey cows to make the cheese.  They make Cheddar, Colby, Baby Swiss, Jersey Jack, Pepper Jack, Gouda and Fresh Cheddar Curds.  They sell several types and ages of Cheddar cheese – Jersey Girl is mild cheddar, Red Barn Cheddar is a little older and more medium cheddar in taste, Toreador the Ambassador Cheddar is aged about 12-18 months.

Young’s on the Moove was added in 2017.  Young’s on the Moove is their version of a food truck. The menu includes several Panini style grilled sandwiches featuring Young’s Farmstead cheese.

Celebrate Young’s 150th birthday with these specials Jan 18-21!

FREE — A Souvenir Young’s 150th Anniversary 12oz Milk Bottle
Included with purchase of any sundae, ice cream cone, milkshake or deep fried breaded cheese curds. $1.00 for additional souvenir Young’s 12oz milk bottles, while they last.

Young’s Farmstead Cheese 9th Anniversary Celebration

June 4, 2018 By Dayton Most Metro

At Young’s Dairy they are offering unlimited Young’s Family Fun Wristbands all week to help celebrate their 9th year of making Young’s Farmstead Cheese!  Good for unlimited family fun all over the farm – unlimited miniature golf, batting cages, driving range, Cowvin’s Fast Slide, Moovers & Shakers & Cowvin’s Kiddie Corral.  Price is $15 for ages 12 and over and $9 for ages 11 and under.  Wristbands good only on day of purchase and can be purchased anywhere on the farm.

Young’s Deep Fried Cheddar Cheese Curds will be on sale at both restaurants during our Cheese Anniversary at $3.49. Regular, Buffalo or Sweet Chili style!

Join The Cheddar Challenge

A 5k trail run starting at 9am on Saturday, June 9th.  The Cheddar Challenge brings runners and walkers of all levels out to Young’s Jersey Dairy for a fun, scenic run. You will traverse the back acres of this world-famous farm and take in the sights most don’t typically see. After you tackle the 3.1 miles, the Farmstead Cheese Festival awaits you. Sample all sorts of cheese, enjoy tons of fun activities, and, of course, grab some legendary Young’s Jersey Dairy Ice Cream! Oh, there will be milkshakes…

On Saturday & Sunday June 9 & 10 from 10 am to 8 pm get an order of curds from “Young’s on the Moove” – our new food truck.  Or order a panini-style grilled cheese sandwich and enjoy a 1/2 pint of Young’s Homemade Ice Cream.  Young’s on the Moove will be parked on our Farm Plaza, where you can enjoy watching the goats while tasting an order of deep fried cheddar curds.

Sample Young’s Farmstead Cheese, which is on sale all week.  Purchase one piece of homemade cheese, pint of fresh cheddar curds, or sampler package, get one of equal or lesser value for only $3.00!
