Green County Fair Scaled Back to Junior Fair

July 28, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

The Greene County Agricultural Society’ presents the 181st ‘Greene County Fair’ Tuesday, August 4, through Saturday, August 8, 2020 at the Greene County Fairgrounds, 120 Fairground Road. Xenia, OH.

“We are absolutely thrilled, in these unusual times, to present a smaller version of our fair.” said Dan Bullen, a director for the Greene County Agricultural Society.

“We went above & beyond the state guidelines to protect our fairgoers with masks, social distancing, sanitizing stations and limited access to our buildings, but after consulting with the Greene County Combined Health District they strongly recommended its best to scale back.” he added.

Currently the plan is to live stream the junior fair which showcases young people showing and selling their livestock. Details forthcoming.

“The youngsters put their heart and soul into raising livestock all year. We could not disappoint them.” Said Kala Benton, also a director for the Greene County Agricultural Society.

The following is what to expect:

*Masks are required for all individuals on the fairgrounds. Except youngsters 10 and under or those who suffer with a medical condition.

*Admission is $5 unless you bring a canned good for our local food pantry. A non-perishable item reduces admission price to $3 dollars all week.

*No rides, no games

*Minimal food vendors.

*No ground acts, no grandstand events, closed grandstand.

*Only family and close friends limited to 10 per exhibitor.

*All the above rules are in accordance with The Greene County Combined Health District

‘The good news is we will be back in 2021 bigger & better than ever!” Bullen said.

Dayton Unveil Plans for Aug. 4 Shooting Anniversary Remembrance Events

July 24, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Tuesday, Aug. 4, will mark one year since nine people were killed and many more injured as a result of a mass shooting in the Oregon District.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Dayton, along with several community partners, is announcing plans for virtual events to help remember and honor victims and survivors. The memorial events, branded “Dayton Shines,” reference Gem City Shine, the event held following the tragedy that brought together tens of thousands of Daytonians on the streets of the Oregon District in celebration of life and love.
“In the midst of an already difficult year, on August 4, 2019, we joined the sad list of cities terrorized by a mass shooting,” said Mayor Nan Whaley. “Although we have been forced to change our initial plans due to the current health crisis, we are hopeful that these events will still allow people to express themselves and still come together as a community”
The events marking one year since the shooting will be solitary, virtual or limited to small groups. We are asking the community to continue to observe safety guidelines as outlined by the state while participating in memorial events.
These events include:
Nine Minutes of Silence will be observed on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 8:04 p.m. to remember the nine victims of the shooting. The City will provide a link to a video tribute to victims on its Facebook page for 9 minutes beginning at 8:04 p.m.. Participants are encouraged to light a candle and reflect on those we lost and why #DaytonShines.
A Photo Mosaic will be made from a collection of contributed pictures pieced together to create a unified memorial image. The final mosaic design will showcase how the Dayton community continues to remember those who were lost, and how we have come together and continue to work to make Dayton shine in their honor. The final mosaic will be unveiled on Tuesday, Aug. 4. Everyone is invited to participate in this community project. The deadline to submit your photo is Sunday, Aug. 2, at 5 p.m. The photo mosaic will be unveiled at daytonohio.gov/DaytonShines on Aug. 4.
To submit a photo for the memorial mosaic, please follow the guidelines below:
    1. Take a photo of yourself, your family/friends, or something that represents how #DaytonShines (photos in a square format are preferred, but not required)
    2. Text your photo to: 937-230-7547
    3. Reply “yes” to the automated text response to confirm your photo entry into the mosaic.
Remembrance Candles are for sale, to be used during the Nine Minutes of Silence on Aug. 4, at 8:04 PM. Candles are for sale for $10/each from July 24, at 6 p.m., to Aug. 2, at noon. Purchases can be made online at www.1880candleco.com/daytonshines. All proceeds from the candles will be donated to the Oregon District Business Association.
Dayton’s Darkest Summer: The Rise from Tragedy is a 17-minute documentary about the tornado outbreak and mass shooting that devastated lives across the Dayton region during the summer of 2019. Dayton’s Darkest Summer is the fifth documentary produced by University of Dayton media production students under the guidance of Greg Kennedy, media specialist in residence, and Roy Flynn, principal lecturer of electronic media. The documentary originally premiered online in May, with screenings on three nights hosted by the Department of Communication via Zoom. A re-release is scheduled for Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. Please visit daytonohio.gov/DaytonShines for more details.
Facing Project: The Dayton International Peace Museum and The Facing Project partnered to collect stories about gun violence in our community. The collection of stories will be made available on Aug. 1. Some of the stories from the August 4 tragedy will be featured in a radio broadcast available on the Dayton International Peace Museum website on Aug. 4. For more information, visit http://gunviolence.facingproject.com/ or http://daytonpeacemuseum.org
The City of Dayton thanks the Oregon District Business Association, Montgomery County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS), the Downtown Dayton Partnership, the University of Dayton, the Miami Valley Planning Commission, the Montgomery County Prosecutor Victim/Witness Division, Lamar Advertising, Key-Ads Inc., Mark DaGrossa, 1880 Candle Company, and Dion Green for working diligently to create events that honor the lives of the victims and provide opportunities for healing.
The City recognizes that some in our community are dealing with trauma stemming from last year’s tragic events. We encourage anyone suffering to seek help by contacting the Montgomery County Victim/Witness Division – 24 Hour Crisis Hotline at 937-225-5623.

Ohio-born filmmakers come together to Make ‘The Big Ugly,’ starring Ron Perlman, Malcolm McDowell

July 23, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Directed, written and produced by Ohio native Scott Wiper, The Big Ugly makes its big screen debut this weekend at the Dixie Drive-In , followed by video on demand screenings next week.

The story of the film:  Neeyln (Vinnie Jones) has always been the loyal enforcer for crime boss Harris (Malcolm McDowell) back in London, taking care of problems and people that disrupt his illicit business. When Harris strikes a deal with an old friend – American oilman Preston (Ron Perlman) – they find themselves in the wild hills of West Virginia. Contracts are signed and the whiskey flows in celebration, but overnight Neelyn’s girlfriend disappears, last seen with Preston’s wayward son Junior. Lines are drawn between family and friends, but nothing will stop Neelyn from getting answers — and retribution.

Photos courtesy of 4G VISION

Dayton’s own  Karri O’Reilly, who served as a producer on The Big Ugly, befriended Wiper working with him on his early films in the ’90s, also said she had hoped to film the project in Ohio near her home in Dayton.

Karri O’Reilly

“I’m from Ohio, I love to work here. Scott’s from Ohio, he really wanted to do another movie here. Part of it was our bad, because we didn’t get in line(for the Ohio Film Tax Rebate), but it just shows why the tax incentive is such a critical piece to attracting projects, even homegrown projects,” O’Reilly said. “There’s nothing like making a movie at home.”  The movie ended up being filmed in Morehead, Kentucky  in six weeks over the summer of 2018.

Wiper and O’Reilly pulled from their Ohio networks to put together a cast and crew that drew in film industry workers from the state. That included Anne Taylor and Jaclyn Laravie doing makeup, Kevin Martt as best boy grip, Jane Streeter on locations, Mike Salamone as Grip, Jessalyn Lauree was an Asst to Malcolm McDowell, David Gewertz as background BG Wrangler, and many more.  Wiper estimated that about 75% of the film’s crew is from Ohio.

Many of the local film crew will meet up this Sunday at the Dixie Drive-In to see the film on the big screen.  Gates open at 8pm, the film will begin at 9:30pm. There will be a brief Q & A before the screening.

Crafted & Cured Will Reopen in the Dayton Arcade

July 23, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Crafted & Cured has signed a 10-year lease at the historic Dayton Arcade to be a first-floor anchor tenant at 45 W. Fourth Street, Dayton, OH 45402. The lease is signed, demolition has started for construction, and Crafted & Cured is projected to open the beginning of 2021.

“We look forward to expanding our vision at the Dayton Arcade,” co-owner Christian Alvarez says. Crafted & Cured plans to build out 4,800 square feet with expanded offerings. Crafted & Cured’s mission is to serve the community with a full-service retail shop of craft beer, boutique wines, champagnes, cured meats and artisanal cheeses.

“We’ve always strived to provide a service that’s unique and memorable in a setting that pays tribute to our history,” co-owner Andy Routson explains. After announcing earlier this week the closure of their first location at the historic Deitz Block, Crafted & Cured is excited to continue their vision at the Dayton Arcade. “We believe the Dayton Arcade represents a celebration of entrepreneurship and artisanal food and beverage purveyors throughout Dayton’s history”.

Cross Street Partners, Model Group, and McCormack Baron Salazar are redeveloping the historic Dayton Arcade, a collection of nine buildings totaling over 500,000 square feet in the heart of downtown Dayton’s central business district. The full development plan will recast the Arcade in much the same way it was initially developed in the first decade of the 20th century—with a mix of retail, offices, event space and housing.

The first phase of the project, the South Arcade, will consist of an innovation center with the University of Dayton as a higher education partner in addition to a 110-unit residential LIHTC and market rate development for artists and creative entrepreneurs.

For construction and opening updates, follow Crafted & Cured and the Dayton Arcade on Instagram and Facebook.

Crafted & Cured On The Move

July 21, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Five years ago Crafted & Cured opened the doors at 521 Wayne Avenue, in the District Provisions building. Specializing in fresh Craft beer/Ciders with a 60 tap growler fill station and an amazing selection of cured meats/fine cheeses, basically introducing  charcuterie boards to the masses in Dayton.

Over the past month or so they’ve had to close due to lack of air conditioning and other issues in their building.  Today they posted the following on their Facebook page:

5-years ago, we signed this lease with great ambition to provide an unmatched experience to the Dayton community. Aligned with our intention, we valued the opportunity to revitalize a piece of history. Sentiments that we still hold dear today.

While we aim to serve the most unique offerings and create an intimate customer ambience, we have perpetually struggled with inadequate property management.

With these unresolved issues and the opportunity to end our lease, we’ve come to terms with this reality and have made the decision to move on. And while we would have preferred the opportunity to plan a seamless transition to a new space, things just didn’t line up that way.

Over the past 5-years, we’ve been able to celebrate, champion and build lasting relationships within the Dayton community. For that, we are forever grateful and fueled with a deep commitment to our hometown.

With that commitment, we have worked diligently to secure a better future and home for Crafted & Cured, aligned with a property management group better suited for our vision and values.

Thank you for the years of unwavering support, especially over the past few months. Our gratitude is rooted in our commitment to return in greater service to this community than ever before.

Stay tuned for a very exciting announcement coming this Thursday!

With the greatest of appreciation,
Andy, Christian and the Crafted & Cured team

So check back with us Thursday as we share their big announcement!

Chipotle Introduces New Organic Drinks Lineup

July 21, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Chipotle is rolling out a lineup of new beverages from farmer-owned and sustainably-sourced Tractor Beverage Company. Chipotle will be donating 5% of all purchases from this menu to support farmers, giving you an extra sweet incentive to try it out on your next burrito run.

In addition to the new Organic Lemonade and Organic Hibiscus Lemonade, the exclusive menu also includes the Mexican specialty aguas frescas, which is Spanish for “fresh water.” Just like the name suggests, the refreshing sips start with a base of water and are usually infused with fruits and other ingredients for a summery beverage that isn’t too sweet.

The Organic Mandarin Agua Fresca, which features notes of citrus, orange, and tangerine, is a tasty way to get some vitamin C. Meanwhile, the Organic Berry Agua Fresca is made with pomegranates, cherries, and strawberries, as well as a “hint of apple cider vinegar,” according to the press release. On average, both of these drinks will sell for $2.40 per 22-ounce drink or $2.70 per 32-ounce drink.

Both of the aguas frescas and the new lemonades are available for pick-up and dine-in options only, meaning you’ll need to make a trip to your local Chipotle to try them. If you’re ordering delivery, you can still get in on the new Tractor Beverages menu by trying the bottled Organic Lemonade or Organic Black Tea, which are both retailing for $3.19 per bottle

It’s Summer Restaurant Week

July 19, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Restaurant Week kicks off tonight and runs through Sun, July 26th.  That  means 3 course meal deals are available all over town.  This tradition, which started  in 2005 and happens twice a year, bases the cost of the meals on the year, so you’ll find restaurants will offer special menu’s at $20.20. Several years ago they added options for $25.20, or $30.20, some restaurants offer all three price points.  The Pandemic has certainly affected this semi-annual event, which usually kicks off with a Sneak Peek event, which didn’t happen this year.  At it’s peak, there have been over 50 restaurants that have participated, but it looks like this year will be a more limited selection.

The $20.20 – 35.20 prix-fixe meal doesn’t include beverages, tip or tax. Since your meal is discounted, this might be the best time to splurge on a bottle of wine or a top shelf bourbon. Because of the nature of this promotion, don’t expect to be able to substitute menu options, and for vegetarians and vegans, there are often not a lot of options.

Now the trickiest part about this week,  even though it kicks off on Sunday night, many of the businesses open reduced hours due to C19, so while the promotion kicks off tonight, you’ll see below we’ve listed those that are just opened limited nights.

Signs will be posted around the site about practicing safe social distancing while outside, and a one-way directional pattern through the museum will be implemented through our indoor exhibit,” said SunWatch Site Manager Taylor Hoffman.

Dayton Bike Share Adds Electric Bikes

July 14, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

After closing in late March for system upgrades, Link: Dayton Bike Share (Link) is back open. Link: Dayton Bike Share has redeployed its fleet of green Link bikes under the new system, as well as a fleet of electric bicycles (e-bikes) dubbed eLink.

The eLink bikes are white in color with green accents to help them stand out from the green Link bikes. The eLink bikes must be pedaled to engage the electric motor in the bike that assists riders. The bikes do not assist a rider above a speed of 15 mph, and they can be ridden anywhere in the system service area which will be outlined in the Link Dayton app.

“Users can unlock bikes through the Link Dayton app, which we launched in early May and is available for download,” said Bike Miami Valley’s executive director Laura Estandia. “To help celebrate our re-opening during this soft-launch period, we’re offering free 15 minute rides with the code, 15LAUNCH for the Pay-As-You-Go pass until July 4th.” Users can enter the promo code in the “Coupons and Credits” part of the app to receive the discount.

Link offers a variety of memberships within the app for the Green Bikes and eLink Bikes. “For a quick trip, we recommend the Pay-As-You-Go pass,” says Estandia, “but for a longer bike ride, our Day Pass is the best value.”

Users start and end trips within the app, and must use the onboard cables to lock up bikes at Link’s 27 designated parking hubs. The final version of the new hub signage will be installed next week and more e-bikes will roll out the week of July 6th for the official opening of the program.

Hoshi Ramen ‘s One Year Anniversary

July 14, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Minchun Li and his parents, Sheng and Anna Li opened Hoshi Ramen, last summer.  Offering Dayton’s only authentic Japanese ramen, the restaurant business runs strong in the family lineage.  Many of the dishes featured at this Fairborn eatery were favorites from his grandparents former restaurant, Flying Tiger, that operated in Fairborn for over 30 years.

In celebration of Hoshi’s one year anniversary their chef has created a few specials that start today and will run through the end of July:

BOLOGNESE RAMEN
Rich chicken broth, infused with a tomato-basil tare….topped with provolone cheese, ground pork, meatball, scallions, egg, a sheet of nori, with a swirl of black garlic mayu and a Pecorino Romano Chip…..

SHRIMP BAO
A fluffy steamed bun filled with pickled veggies, a splash of cilantro, golden fried shrimp, drizzled in our Chef’s special Garlic Aioli. This is just one of 4 different baos on the menu.

KARAAGE BAO BOWL
A layer of warm rice, topped with our pickled Bao veggies and cilantro, followed by our most deliciously juicy, crunchy Karaage and drizzle of our house Garlic Aioli and some scallions!!
