DAI Now Open Thursday – Sunday

August 5, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Beginning August 5, the Dayton Art Institute (DAI) will expand its hours to include Thursdays, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The museum is also open on Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m.–5 p.m., and Sundays, noon–5 p.m.

“The community has asked us for additional weekday hours, as well as evening hours, and today I’m pleased to announce that we will now be open on Thursdays,” DAI Director & CEO Michael R. Roediger said. “This provides guests with more opportunities to enjoy our current Special Exhibition, Changing Times: Art of the 1960s, as well as new Focus Exhibitions and our recently reopened Lange Family Experiencenter.”

The DAI will open two new Focus Exhibitions in conjunction with the expanded hours: Photography through Time, on view July 30–October 24, and Spotlight on Africa: Gifts from Dianne Komminsk, on view August 7–November 4.

Photography through Time explores the range of photographic processes and techniques within the Dayton Art Institute’s extensive photography collection. From early photographic processes to contemporary artworks, the exhibition will include examples of daguerreotype, cyanotype, albumen, gelatin silver, chromogenic, photogravure and inkjet photographs. Photography through Timepresents a rare opportunity to see these works. Supporting Sponsors for the exhibition are Norma Landis & Rick Hoffman.

A business leader and philanthropist, Dianne Komminsk (1944–2019) of New Bremen, Ohio, was a passionate collector of art. She collected contemporary art and antiquities, but her greatest interest was in the rich aesthetic qualities of art from Africa. Spotlight on Africa: Gifts from Dianne Komminsk will feature some of the more than 300 objects she has gifted the DAI during her lifetime and through her estate. Komminsk’s extraordinary collection of African art includes work from across the continent and, when combined with the museum’s holdings, helps strengthen a world-class collection of the art of Africa for the Dayton Art Institute. Supporting Sponsor for the exhibition is PNC, with additional support from Patty & Jerry Tatar.

Other exhibitions currently on view at the DAI include The Roaring (and the Quiet) 1920s, Bukang Y. Kim: Journey to the East and All by Myself: Japanese Creative Prints.

The DAI also recently reopened The Lange Family Experiencenter, the museum’s interactive gallery for all ages. The Lange Family Experiencenter currently features the exhibition ABCs of Art, a playful exploration of the artistic alphabet special to artists, makers and people who enjoy looking at art. An artistic alphabet can include media—or materials—and techniques, style and meaning, or visual elements such as color, line and shape. This “hands-off, brains-on” exhibition exposes learners of all ages to new art concepts and a dynamic variety of artworks from the DAI collection.

“The exhibitions we currently have are wonderfully diverse. They feature great variety, from ancient and traditional works of Africa to contemporary art made right here in Ohio. Even for our members who come to the DAI regularly, there is a lot of newly installed art to see and enjoy,” DAI Chief Curator & Director of Education Jerry N. Smith said.

In addition, the DAI’s popular Bob Ross Auto Group Jazz & Beyond series returns on August 12 with Soul Express, and informal performances on the museum’s historic Skinner pipe organ have resumed on the first and third Saturday of each month at 2 p.m. The DAI’s first in-person education program since early 2020, the Language of Art, will be held on August 14. Visit the DAI’s website for a full list of exhibitions, events and programs.

On Friday, Saturday & Sunday, August 6-8, when the DAI will hold a special catalogue sale, featuring discounted catalogues from the museum’s permanent collection and past exhibitions, including some vintage exhibition catalogues from the 1950s & 1960s! Pictured above are just a few of  the catalogues available, and everything will be priced at $4 or less. The sale takes place in the Leo Bistro area – look for the sign in the Rotunda.

General admission to the DAI, which includes access to the collection galleries, all exhibitions and The Lange Family Experiencenter, is: $15 adults; $10 seniors (60+), active military and groups (10 or more); $5 students (18+ w/ID) and youth (ages 7–17); free for children (ages 6 & younger). Admission is also free for museum members.

The 2021-2022 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Now Available

August 2, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

The Ohio Wildlife Council has approved the 2021-22 hunting regulations. As in years past, a hunter may take no more than one antlered deer regardless of where or how it is taken, and a hunter cannot exceed a county bag limit. All county bag limits remain identical to last season. The deer hunting season dates for 2021-22 include:

  • Deer archery: Sept. 25, 2021-Feb. 6, 2022.
  • Youth deer gun: Nov. 20-21, 2021.
  • Deer gun: Nov. 29-Dec. 5, 2021; Dec. 18-19, 2021.
  • Deer muzzleloader: Jan. 8-11, 2022.
  • Hunting hours are 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.

Updated this year, antlerless deer may be taken from all public hunting areas from Sept. 25, 2021, to Feb. 6, 2022, provided that a hunter takes only one antlerless deer from these lands per license year. Ohio’s public land deer regulations have resulted in improved hunter satisfaction on public hunting areas. Expanding the antlerless deer dates provides additional opportunities to public land hunters.

Deer management permits have been expanded to all 88 Ohio counties and may be used from Sept. 25 to Nov. 28, 2021. Hunters can use the deer management permit up to the county bag limit. The permit does not include public hunting areas, except Lake La Su An Wildlife Area, Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area, and during controlled hunts. Only antlerless deer may be harvested with a deer management permit. An antlerless deer in Ohio is defined as any deer without antlers, or with antlers less than 3 inches long.

Deer populations in Ohio have shown increased growth over the last several years. Expanding the use of deer management permits statewide on private lands helps keep populations near targeted numbers while also maintaining a healthy and robust deer population on public lands. This also simplifies where hunters can use the permit and allows for more targeted harvest in counties where necessary.

A complete list of Ohio’s 2021-22 hunting seasons is available at wildohio.gov.

The Hathaways at Hidden Gem Tonight

July 31, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Tom Baer is the band’s drummer/sound engineer/producer/strategic planner. He has played drums for bands such as ‘Sunnuva” and ‘The Decades’, and was the sound engineer for ‘Flyweil’, ‘The Pulse’, and ‘Zummo’. He produced ‘The Pulse’s first album, as well as the first ‘Hathaways’ CD. He is also one of the principal vocalists in the band.

The ‘other’ Tom (Dempsey) plays bass, sings, and is one of the band’s contributing songwriters. He was a founding member of ‘The Hathaways’ and ‘Seventh Street’ and a band-mate                            of Tom Baer’s in ‘Sunnuva’.

Barry Drake is the band’s versatile guitarist/vocalist/resident wild-man. If an Eric Clapton tune or Stevie Ray Vaughn number is requested, he is the obvious man for the job. Plus, he can sing like Paul McCartney and dance like Harry James.

Sammy Davis is the newest member of the Hathaways, although he played with Barry Drake twenty years ago in the ‘Goin’ Home’ band, touring Michigan and most of Ohio. Sammy has had a parallel career in music with the Hathaways, playing in competing rock outfits for a long time. He has finally come to roost with the Hathaways, and we couldn’t be happier. He can duplicate the feel of a variety of musical styles with his array of keyboards, from honky tonk piano to Keith Emerson’s Hammond organ to a full orchestra.

Last, but not least, is Randy Eldred, our sound engineer. Randy makes sure the sound of the band is pro quality.  A musician in his own right, he knows what it takes to bring all of the instrumental elements together to achieve a cohesive sound.  His production company goes by the name of ‘Cody Music’, and is a huge contributor to our success.

10 Week Construction Detour at Airport

July 30, 2021 By Dayton Most Metro

Visitors to Dayton International Airport will notice a short detour beginning Aug. 2 as the U.S. Rt. 40 improvements project continues.
The following will be closed through Oct. 1:
-Access ramp from southbound Airport Terminal Drive to U.S. Rt. 40 (National Road)
-Access ramp from U.S. Rt. 40 (National Road) to northbound Airport Terminal Drive
The detour will involve Concorde Drive, Freight Drive, Cargo Road, Boeing Drive and Terminal Drive. It will be clearly marked and is expected to add less than five minutes of travel time to or from the airport.
Drivers approaching the airport via the Airport Access Road (from I-70) will not be affected by the ramp closures or detour.
The temporary ramp closures will allow the project to be completed in a shortened time frame. The U.S. Rt. 40 improvements project will widen a portion of U.S. 40, which will create a better traffic flow to and from the airport. The project will also upgrade traffic signals and provide new, modernized ramps at the U.S. 40 airport access point.

We know you will “knot” want to miss the Celtic Knot weekend kicking off with performances by fan favorites, Dulahan, joined by the Dwyer School of Irish Dance and McGovern Irish Dance.

Dulahan is based in Dayton, Ohio and has performed regionally for the past 19 years. They are one of 3 bands that have performed every year at the Dayton Celtic Festival since its inception and have also been a frequent performer at Flanagan’s annual St Patrick’s Day celebrations.
