50th Anniversary Oktoberfest A Go For DAI!
The Dayton Art Institute (DAI) announced today that its popular fall festival and fundraiser, Oktoberfest, will return to the museum grounds in 2021, taking place September 24–26. The annual Dayton tradition celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
“It was such a difficult decision last year to cancel Oktoberfest for the first time in the festival’s history,” said DAI Director & CEO Michael R. Roediger. “Going into the spring of this year, we were hopeful that Oktoberfest could return for its 50th anniversary, and today we are excited to announce that a full, three-day Oktoberfest celebration will take place on the museum grounds. As the DAI’s largest annual fundraiser, it will play a vital role in supporting museum operations as we emerge from the pandemic.”
Plans for Oktoberfest include the return of the Lederhosen Lunch and Preview Party on Friday, September 24, followed by Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 25, noon–11:30 p.m. and Sunday, September 26, noon–7 p.m.
“We look forward to welcoming the community back to the museum and grounds this fall, as we celebrate the festival’s long history,” said DAI Associate Board members and 2021 Oktoberfest Chairs, Liz Wolfe-Eberly and Peter Eberly. “It’s an honor to serve as the festival chairs and help plan for Oktoberfest’s 50thanniversary!”
In conjunction with today’s announcement, the Dayton Art Institute is also launching its annual call for volunteers to assist with the festival. Oktoberfest wouldn’t be possible without the support of more than 2,000 volunteers each year. Many different volunteer opportunities will be available at Oktoberfest 2021, including selling Oktoberfest mugs and t-shirts, selling soft drinks and water, staffing admission gates, serving as greeters in the museum, and assisting with family activities at the FamilyFest. Those interested in volunteering must register through the Oktoberfest page on the Dayton Art Institute’s website, at www.daytonartinstitute.org/oktoberfest.
The Oktoberfest page will also serve at the central hub for all information and updates relating to Oktoberfest. More information about this year’s festival will be posted there in the coming weeks. Advance tickets for the Preview Party and Oktoberfest will go on sale in mid-August.
Otoberfest was established by the DAI Associate Board in 1971, with the first full public festival taking place in 1972. Each year, the Associate Board helps organize Oktoberfest as a fundraiser to support the museum. This group of 64 dedicated museum volunteers also organizes the annual Art Ball gala. Over the years, the Associate Board has raised nearly $7.5 million for the museum through Oktoberfest. Since its inception, more than one million people have attended the DAI’s Oktoberfest!
WDPR Collecting Musical Instruments
Do you have a used musical instrument you no longer need? You can make it sing again in the hands of a young musician. It’s time once again for It’s Instrumental, a musical instrument drive that benefits aspiring young musicians in the Dayton region. One of the best things we can do is inspire that next generation of music lovers,” said Shaun Yu, the president and CEO of Dayton Public Radio. “The best way to deepen that love of music is to actually make it.”
During the past few years, hundreds of instruments have been collected for students in area schools, and for musicians in the Q the Music program. Q the Music is a daily after-school string orchestra program that supports the musical, academic and social growth of at-promise youth in the Dayton community. Located at Ruskin Elementary, students in grades 3 through 6 receive academic tutoring; take group lessons in violin, viola and cello; and participate in string orchestra rehearsals.
All kinds of instruments are accepted, even those in need of repair, as well as accessories like carrying cases and bows. You can even get a receipt for tax purposes.

Bike Miami Valley co-operates the Link: Dayton Bike Share system with Greater Dayton RTA. The City of Dayton recently supported the expansion into the Carillon neighborhood where the OneFifteen campus is located. “We were thrilled to receive a grant to do specific outreach and engagement with the recovery community,” says Laura Estandia, executive director of Bike Miami Valley. “Our hope is to break down barriers to bicycling through this program so that OneFifteen clients can reap all of the mental and physical health benefits cycling offers.”
“The benefits of physical activity during a recovery journey are well-documented. Being able to provide free access to bicycling for our patients is such a gift. OneFifteen is grateful for the grant from the Better Bike Share Partnership, and the new bike-sharing station installed on our campus by Link: Dayton Bike Share system, that allow us to offer this additional benefit,” said OneFifteen Assistant Medical Director, Dr. Brian Merrill.

The BBSP offers several grant cycles throughout the year. OneFifteen was one of 12 recipients to be awarded a mini-grant in the most recent cycle. “Better Bike Share mini-grants allow us to support and share lessons from small, innovative projects,” said Zoe Kircos, director of grants and partnerships at PeopleForBikes and manager of BBSP. “We look forward to learning from these grantees and seeing how their strategies help more people access bike share systems.”
Fifth Street Brewpub Announces New Brewmaster
Fifth Street Brewpub’s founding Brewmaster, Darren Link, retired after nine years of brewing some truly creative and tasty beers for this co-op owned brewery.
Today they’ve announced that Jon Naghski will be the new head brewer. Jon has spent the last nine years working for Goose Island Beer Company. Most recently he served as the Head Brewer at the original Goose Island Clybourn location in Chicago.
General manager Tonya Brock says, “as we continue to grow into the next chapter of the Brewpub’s story, we look forward to having Jon Naghski on board. His years of experience and skill will help us continue to build our solid legacy through fine-tuned beers and maximized production. Jon’s tenure with an international branded brewery has grown his longing to re-connect with the community of drinkers we serve. This combined with his passion of all things beer will only add to our storytelling from ingredients to last drop in the glass. As a co-op, we have always found purpose in sharing a place where stories are made and shared with our community…around a pint of beer.”
As Jon says, “I am impressed by the strong bones that the community continues to build with Fifth Street and am excited to meet people and make some beer.”
A special Meet the Brewer & Annual Hop Picking Party is scheduled for Wednesday, 8/18 5-7pm.
