Last Weekend for McGillicutty’s

December 22, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Entrance to McGillicutty's Pub

The Kash family has been running McGillicutty’s  on Whipp Road since 1994.  Before that is was a Noble Roman’s pizza joint.  Over the years Cutty’s, as it is affectionately known, cultivated a following who play in their dart leagues, show up for trivia, paint nights and Sunday night Karaoke. And while the beer is always cold, the drink specials affordable, it’s probably best known for it’s hot spicy garlic wings, Lisa Kash’s homemade meatballs, the pizza, killer bloody mary’s  and oh, those breadsticks!

It’s the kind of place where no one leaves McGillicutty’s a stranger. It’s a friendly place and welcoming to all.  It was one of our favorites stops in  our Dive Bar series.

Yet early this am Lisa Kash posted this on their facebook page:

Lisa & Kevin Kash

“It is with a broken heart that I am writing this. First off I want to thank my employees, who are really more family than employees — I cannot thank all of you enough for everything you have done for me and with me over the years. There are no words!!

Secondly, to all of the people who have come into the bar for all of these years — I have been blessed to have met all of you, become friends with you and some of you are more than these four walls— we are family!! I can’t thank all of you enough for your support, your friendship and all of the great memories that we all have.

That being said— we will be open all weekend, Christmas Eve and Christmas night.. at 2:30, I will lock the doors for the last time!! There are no words for what is my heart right now except thank you all for the great times and all of the wonderful memories I have with all of you!! Merry Christmas to all of you and your families and God bless you all!!”

Lets’s all be sure and send them off with a packed house and big thanks for all the great times we’ve had their over the years!  Best of luck to the Kash’s on the next chapter.

The Brunch Club Finally Sets Reopening Day

December 20, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Out out of business April 18th by a kitchen fire,  The Brunch Club owner Jim Vari  just shared they’ve passed their final inspection and will open back up this Saturday at 7am!  This downtown eatery, located at 600 block of S. Main Street has been a Datyton mainstay for years.

This will mean a Merry Christmas for all the staff.  Vari shares that his entire satff, cooks, waitressess and cashiers will all be back, with the exception of one, and she retired!

Tiffany and Lori can’t wait to be taking your order again.

While the kitchen fire did a lot of damage, the age of the building had a lot to do with the time it took to get the repairs done.  Over the years the codes have changed and in order to reopen he had to bring everything up to current code.   And they did!  Now it’s time to open the doors welcome back the regulars and attract some new businesses as well!

Jorrge’s Cantina Now Open!

December 13, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

After working at Pepito’s for nine years the husband and wife team of George and Janet took all their savings and made a leap of faith, opening up Jorrge’s Cantina at 3800 Wilmington Pike (in the spot most recently known as Merit Grill) just a couple of weeks ago.  Janet shares that this was “George’s dream and now it’s come true.”  They serve breakfast Friday – Sunday 7am – 11am, lunch from 11am – 3pm Friday – Sunday (and will add more days soon – they are currently looking to hire some smiling faces)  and dinner from 4pm – 9pm Monday – Saturday.  They have applied for a liquor license, which they are hoping won’t take to long to arrive.

Here’s your first look at the dinner menu:

McCoy on Movies: Mortal Engines

December 12, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Mortal Engines runs out of steam before it reaches its dystopian future finish line.

“Hold on tight, everybody … There’s a movie plot ahead of us to finish!” Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan, left) and Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar) look on as Anna Fang (Jihae) drives in a scene from MORTAL ENGINES, directed by Christian Rivers, and written by Fran Walsh, Phillpa Boyens and Peter Jackson (based on the novel by Philip Reeve). Credit: Mark Pokorny / Universal Pictures and MRC. © 2018 Universal Pictures. All rights reserved.

WATCH THE TRAILER(S) HERE:

KEY CAST MEMBERS: Hera Hilmer, Hugo Weaving, Jihae, Robert Sheehan, Lelia George, Patrick Malahide, Ronan Raftery and Stephen Lang as Shrike

DIRECTOR(S): Christian Rivers

WEB SITE: http://mortalengines.comTHE BACK STORY: Based on the series of books by Philip Reeve, Mortal Engines is set in a dystopian future where humans have, once again, scorched the earth (which apparently has suffered from massive land shifting, possibly due to earthquakes), leaving little in the way of resources. And town and cities have become rolling landmasses on wheels fighting for them.

That’s right. Cities. Are. Now. On. Wheels. Rollin’ – and the big ones like London led by Thaddeus Valentine (Hugo Weaving) devour every city in their path.

But while Thaddeus’ daughter Katherine (Leila George) and local museum worker Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan) look up to Thaddeus Valentine, Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmer) knows the truth – and the scar she has across her face is one of the reminders she has of Valentine’s truly devious nature. Which is why she is determined to stop him at any cost before he tries to take down the Shield Wall, housing Anti-Traction League, a.k.a. the groups of people like Anna Fang (Jihae) that wish to stop London (and anything like it) from taking over the rest of the new world.

The only question is whether or not their efforts will be too late since Valentine’s search for “old tech” is nearly complete …

THE REVIEW: Ever seen a movie that, like a song on the radio, hits all the familiar beats to make it a hit but lacks anything distinct about it to make you remember it? If you’d like the cinematic equivalent of that all-too-familiar feeling, Mortal Engines is like that unnamed band mentioned in the previous sentence. While you can tell its talented lead singer – in this case, the angsty Hilmer – is doing all she can to let the music play while the label tries its hardest to prop up her pretty but not up to the same level of skill co-star (Sheehan) while the co-stars (Jihae) look the part. But when you play listen closely, their lyrics – in this case, Mortal Engines’ inane dialogue/bad one liners – just fail to move you. And while your best friend might make a compelling case (Stephen Lang’s performance as the robotic Shrike is a scene stealer, the rolling cities are cool to watch on screen), you’ll keep pointing out other elements (Weaving’s villain is a poor man’s Star Wars’ baddie, almost every scene feels predictable and a rip-off of a better movie) that just leave you thinking this band is all style over substance.

If you’re a fan of regular top 40 music, you’ll likely find Mortal Engines to be an enjoyable-enough diversion from constant debates about whether a song from the 1940s no longer fits on modern radio or the type of person who posts on Facebook about you wish you could get away from all the negativity you see everyday. But guess what? That’s not gonna stop people from talking about either of those things – and Mortal Engines, bless its cast’s and crew’s collective hearts, isn’t gonna stop making most people wish it just didn’t seem so familiar.

For it’s the little cinematic engine that could have been better.

OVERALL RATING (OUT OF FOUR POSSIBLE BUCKETS OF POPCORN):

Roadtrip: The Ohio Chinese Lantern Festival in Columbus

December 9, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

As you all know I am always promoting Dayton events, but I gotta tell you,The Dragon Lights running through Monday, January 6th  in Columbus is simply spectacular.  Displayed at the Natural Resource Park at the Ohio Expo Center, just off I 71 north of the city, this walk through display of 38 vignettes of Chinese Lanterns is certainly worth a trip to see.

And while they are called lanterns, they are really huge sculptures created by hand using silk fabric, steel frames, and tens of thousands of LED lights.

You’ll see pandas and  peacocks, tulips and traditional characters representing the  animals in the Chinese zodiac are all on display, but the 200 foot long dragon might just be the most impressive of all.   The project is the work of 20 artisans from China, who were in Central Ohio for  six weeks of set up, organizers said.  Columbus is the seventh American city to host the festival. Previous tour stops included LA,  Milwaukee, Philadelphia, New Orleans and Spokane.

There are also daily performances at 6:30 and 8:00pm  with a third set at 9pm on Friday & Saturday of traditional Chinese acts including jar balancing, kicking bowls on a rolling board, Chinese face-changing, martial arts, and umbrella juggling. Also offered a variety of Chinese fair food and some novelty merchandise booths.

See the  exhibit Tuesday thru Sunday – 5:30pm to 10:00pm and they will also be open on Monday, Dec 24th and 31st.

Tickets: These prices are for advance purchase online.  Tickets are a few dollars more at the door.

Adults $17
Military with ID $14
Youth  5- 16 years old$12
Family 4 Pack – 2 adults, 2 children $50
You can buy tickets online and avoid the line

Parking is charged separately at $6/car in cash.

This is all outside, so be sure and dress warmly!  However, the Marketplace, food vendors and stage performance are indoor.

The Christmas Candy Cane originated in Germany about 250 years ago. They started as straight white sugar sticks.

A story says that a choirmaster, in 1670, was worried about the children sitting quietly all through the long Christmas nativity service. So he gave them something to eat to keep them quiet! As he wanted to remind them of Christmas, he made them into a ‘J’ shape like a shepherds crook, to remind them of the shepherds that visited the baby Jesus at the first christmas. However, the earliest records of ‘candy canes’ comes from over 200 years later, so the story, although rather nice, probably isn’t true!

Sometime around 1900 the red stripes were added and they were flavored with peppermint or wintergreen. So now over 100 years later, it’s no surprise that candy cane flavors have expanded.

Jungle Jim’s International Market is featuring these 8 flavors this holiday season:

Pickle & Coal (Smoky Cinnamon) Candy Canes

Coffee & Rotisserie Chicken Candy Canes

Bacon & Gravy Flavored Candy Canes

Krampus (Cinnamon) & Wasabi Candy Canes

And if those flavors don’t do it for you how about Jelly Belly, Oreo’s, Dum Dums, Sour Patch or Swedish, Life Saver, Sweetarts or Brach’s Red Hots Cinnamon Flavored Candy Canes?

We found these all online, many at Amazon.com.

Yellow Springs Filmmakers To Debut Latest Documentary At Sundance

November 28, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

In 2009 Yellow Spring filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar made a film based on the closure of the Moraine Assembly plant, a General Motors automobile factory on December 23, 2008.  Reichert and Bognar spoke to several hundred of the nearly 3,000 workers at the plant who were to lose their jobs as a result of the closure. Lacking access to film inside the plant itself, the filmmakers supplied some of the workers with flip cameras to smuggle into the factory, allowing them to acquire footage of some of the final vehicles being assembled there. The film, The Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant was picked up by HBO and  was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject) in 2009.

They just found out today their latest film, American Factory will debut this January at the Sundance Film Festival in the U.S. Documentary Competition.  The category will showcase sixteen world-premiere American documentaries that illuminate the ideas, people and events that shape the present day.

American Factory / U.S.A. (Directors: Steven Bognar, Julia Reichert, Producers: Steven Bognar, Julia Reichert, Jeff Reichert, Julie Parker Benello) — In post-industrial Ohio, a Chinese billionaire opens a new factory in the husk of an abandoned General Motors plant, hiring two thousand blue-collar Americans. Early days of hope and optimism give way to setbacks as high-tech China clashes with working-class America. World Premiere

When Steve Bognar called to share the news of the films acceptance into the festival he shared that the film is not yet finished.  They submitted a rough cut for judging and crossed their fingers.  They now have a pretty great reason to get the film finished, but he says there is still a lot of work to be done.  And they’ll be taking some time out to go to California in December where Julia will be awarded the  International Documentary Association’s Career Achievement Award for 2018 in Los Angeles.

American Factory  was selected out of a record-breaking 14,259 submissions from 152 countries.  Bognar  said that the film was untitled until just two days ago.  American Factory refers to what the Chinese call this venture and also to the inside look the film has of the business.

2019 is already shaping up to be a pretty major year for the filmmaking team as , the Museum of Modern Art and the Wexner Center for the Arts will team up to present a traveling retrospective of Julia Reichert’s films later in the year.

Styx Tickets go on Sale Friday for June Concert

November 26, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

STYX, the multi mega million-selling rock band that has forged an indelible legacy both on record and onstage, will bring their one-of-a-kind show to Huber Heights, OH at Rose Music Center on Saturday, June 29th.

The six men comprising Styx have committed to rocking the Paradise together with audiences far and wide by entering their second decade of averaging over 100 shows a year, and each one of them is committed to making the next show better than the last. Styx draws from over four decades of barn burning chart hits, joyous singalongs, and hard-driving deep cuts. Like a symphony that builds to a satisfying crescendo, a Styx set covers a wide range of stylistic cornerstones. From the progressively sweeping splendor that is “The Grand Illusion” to the hunker-down fortitude of all that is the “Blue Collar Man,” from the majestic spiritual love for a special “Lady” to the seething indictment of preening, primping pageantry for pageantry’s sake of “Miss America,” from an individual yearning for true connection as a “Man in the Wilderness” to a soul-deep quest to achieve what’s at the heart of one’s personal vision in “Crystal Ball,” from the regal reach-for-the-stars bravado of “Come Sail Away” to the grainy all-in gallop of that rugged “Renegade” who had it made, the band draws on an unlimited cache of ways to immerse one’s mind and body in their signature sound.

Styx hit its stride with guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw’s first LP with the band, 1976’sCrystal Ball, and then they become the first group to score four triple-platinum albums in a row: The Grand Illusion (1977), Pieces of Eight (1978), Cornerstone (1979), andParadise Theater (1981). Over the ensuing decade, Styx weathered the shifting winds of the public’s musical taste, reconvening for a highly successful 1996 Return to Paradise tour that was expertly documented on both CD and DVD in 1997. With a little help from their many friends in Cleveland’s Contemporary Youth Orchestra, One With Everything (2006) became a hybrid orchestral rock blend for the ages. And on The Grand Illusion / Pieces of Eight Live (2011), the band performed at its peak when tackling every track from a pair of their finest triple-platinum albums back to back. Not only that, but the band re-recorded two discs’ worth of its classic material with much finesse and musculature, aptly known as Regeneration Volume I & II (2011 & 2012). Observes Tommy, “Now you have something you can take home with you and go, ‘Yeah, that’s the band I saw last night.’”

After more than a decade together on the road, this incarnation of Styx is looking forward to performing as many shows as it can as long as it can. “It all comes back to the chemistry,” says bassist/vocalist Ricky Phillips. “The legacy of this band will be that it brought joy to millions of people,” notes drummer Todd Sucherman. Observes keyboardist/vocalist Lawrence Gowan, “We’ve always tried to explain why this is this happening. It’s obviously a multitude of factors, but the main one is that our show isreally good! And if it’s really good, they’re going to come to see it again.” Styx hopes it’s a wave that never crests. “Every night, we go on that magic carpet ride together,” observes original bassist Chuck Panozzo, who joins the band on tour as often as he can. “Music is this amazing force that comes from a higher place. I’m humbled for this band to have the great success that it has,” says co-founding guitarist/vocalist James “JY” Young. “We just want to keep on doing this,” asserts Tommy. “We want to let life take its course and let this music continue to be the soundtrack to it. And this band will continue to evolve as long as we live and play this music.” The jig is up, the news is out: The Esprit de Styx is alive and well, and now it’s time to see for yourself. Welcome to the Grand Evolution.

Tommy Shaw – acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, vocals.

James “JY” Young – electric guitar, vocals.

Chuck Panozzo – bass guitar.
