National Pasta Day Deals

October 17, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

October is National Pasta Month, and October 17 recognizes National Pasta Day.

Pasta is a type of noodle in traditional Italian cuisine, with the first reference dating to 1154 in Sicily and first attested in English in 1874.During the Renaissance, pasta was thought of as a dish for wealthy people. But by the late 17th century, in Naples, it was becoming more of a staple in everyone’s diet. Typically, it is made from unleavened dough of durum wheat flour that is mixed with water or eggs and formed into sheets or various shapes. It can then be served fresh or dried to be stored for later use.

Fresh pasta was originally produced by hand but, today, many varieties of fresh pasta are commercially produced by large-scale machines and the products are widely available in supermarkets.  The average American consumes 20 lbs. of pasta annually. This makes it the 6th highest food per capita in the country. 24% of the global consumption of pasta is by Americans – the largest of any country in the world. Americans consume 6 billion pounds of pasta each year.

Here are some of the pasta-bilities to help you celebrate:

Carrabba’s Italian Grill:

Pasta Geogia has “penne pasta with sautéed bell peppers and Romano, tossed in roasted red pepper sauce, then topped and baked with meatballs and mozzarella.”

Thursday’s Mean Rosé & Ramen at Table 33

October 10, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Table 33 is debuting a new Thursday night dinner feature bringing Rosé & Ramen PopUp to the corner of 2nd and Wilkinson, Thursday nights, 5-10pm.

Inspired by a dish he ate almost every day while living abroad in South Korea, Chef Desmond brings a key tradition of the land of the morning calm to Dayton: Ramen. When searching for something to connect him to Korean culture, Ramen was the perfect medium to connect himself to his new surroundings. With its convenience and accessibility when it came to snacking in Seoul, Ramen noodles became a comfort food for not only his soul, but also his wallet! Our Ramen PopUp will be the perfect accent to ring in the Fall season at Table 33.

Chef Desmond’s house-made Ramen noodles, paired with weekly features including vegan and gluten-free options. Broths made with local produce, grass-fed beef bones, and free-range chicken or pork. We are laying our claim to the best Ramen in Dayton. Ramen will be served a la carte or with a bottle of our featured Rosé for $25.  There is also a gluten free version available.

Picture here Shoyu Ramen. They start with  broth, with 36 hour chicken stock made from local chickens bones, Tamari soy sauce tare, and scratch made dashi. And then there’s the noodles. Fresh, scratch made, and 100% vegan. To finish it up, they’ve added umami everywhere with sesame oil seared cherry tomatoes, marinated eggs, and scallions.  This is just the first ramen dish they will be offering.  Stay tuned for additional options.

There will also be entertainment each Thursday with a live DJ or Music each week. Resident DJ Isicle every 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month.

Other Thursday specials include  $3.33 Local Craft Beers and 33% off all bottles of Wine

10 ?s with Chef Jansen Trotman

Chef Jansen has been in the restaurant industry for over 25 years. Jansen has been the executive chef at Lily’s Bistro in the Oregon district since January where they have always maintained a very close relationship with the local farming community.  he’s been helping to grow their team’s love for creative, fun, and seasonally-driven menus that they change each and every day.

What is your favorite ingredient to cook with?

fresh fish
What ingredient do you dread?
canned meat
What’s your favorite dish to make?
beans and rice with a perfectly cooked sunny side up egg.
What’s your favorite pig out food?
taco bake
What restaurant, other than your own do you like to dine at in the Miami Valley?
Meadowlark
What’s your best advice for home chefs?
taste everything… a lot!
If you could invite any 4 guests to a dinner party who would they be and why?
My Mom,  Dad and my wife because they share the same love for food and fellowship as I. The fourth person is incredibly difficult to decide, I’ll have to give it some thought.
Who do you look up to in the industry and why?
Nobu Matsuhisa.. he’s my all time favorite chef. I admire his drive and determination to stick to his vision throughout the years in spite of so much adversity and opposition.
What do you do in the Miami Valley on a day off?
usually visit one of the local parks for a walk or a hike and dine at one of the local eatery’s.
Share a kitchen disaster, lucky break or other interesting story:
I was vegetarian until I graduated high school. When I was younger my sister’s and I would spend the summers in Tortola with my grandmother. Her brother regularly brought her fresh whole fish from his morning catch. She would clean it, make broth out of the head and bones to use in soups and stews. This whole process at the time was foreign to me and maybe a bit weird and gross too! One morning I was being a total jerk and telling her that it’s disgusting and awful and she promptly picked up one of the fish heads, and hurrled it at me. That might have been when my deep connection to seafood began!!

Family Friendly Show with Comedian Greg Warren

September 20, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Comedian Greg Warren is a favorite on the Bob & Tom radio show who has also appeared on “The Late Late Show” and “Comedy Central Presents.”  I’ve known Greg since back in the day when he was an emcee at my old club Jokers Comedy Cafe, when he still had a full time job at Procter & Gamble where he managed Jif Peanut Butter and Pringles.
When he told me was quitting his day job to become a comic full time I was nervous for him. But I needn’t have been.  Greg moved up quickly in the comedy world, and in 2002 he was tapped to appear at the Montreal’s prestigious Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in 2002.  He appeared on the New Faces of Comedy showcase and then went on to earn an appearance on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend.
In 2009 he had his own Comedy Central Presents  1/2 hour special.  Taped at the Hudson Theatre in the heart of New York City’s Times Square, I still remember sitting in the audience of that  taping, so proud of the comic he’d become since his early Jokers days.
Here’s one of his most famous bits from his early days:  FluteMan

He’s continued to grow as a comic, adding appearing on BET’s Coming to the Stage on CMT Comedy Stage, on NBC’s Last Comic Standing and CBS’s The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson as well as being heard on Sirius/XM Comedy.  His comedy albums  Running Out of Time(Sept 2013) and One Star Wonder(June 2009) hit #3 and #6 respectively in iTunes Top Comedy Albums.

He’ll be appearing at the Dayton Funny Bone this weekend this Friday through Sunday for his regular stand up show, but Sunday at 4pm he’ll be doing a special family friendly comedy show.  It’s a rare comic than can do comedy that entertains a late night audience, then turn around and so a show that is family friendly and not cheesy.  Greg has mastered this and you can  check out some of this show and hear what folks think of this show:

Catch Greg Warren this weekend:

Dayton Funny Bone at The Greene

88 Plum St, Dayton, OH 45440

Friday & Saturday  7:30 & 10pm

Sunday 7:30pm

Making a Difference in Dayton: Jonathan Platt & Story Chain

September 19, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

Story Chain started 3 years ago to help alleviate the loss and abandonment felt by children of parents who are incarcerated. Jonathan Platt was inspired by a Daddy and Me program in New York City.  In 2015 he began volunteering at the Dayton Correctional Institute with PowerNet.  That organization, led by Craig Powell, was dedicated to giving leadership skills to incarcerated individuals soon to be released.  Platt was able to pilot the Story Chain program to a class of 7 women who had 11 children.  Together they choose, read, memorize and record books for their children.  The workshops walk the participants step-by step through the process of choosing books appropriate for the the child, discuss the validity and impact, practice diction, rehearse lines and record their work.

Story Chain has tremendous potential to make a lasting impact. By sharing a book, hearing a voice and fostering a feeling of closeness despite the distance, can change the future for children of incarcerated parents.  This project was chosen at the UpDayton Summit to move forward and has received a grant from the Dayton Rotary Foundation to help fund it.

Want to find out more about this project?

Join Jonathan Platt at Mudlick Tap House tonight from 6:30-8pm on the second floor  get important information about Story Chain visits starting soon at the Greene County Jail.

If you cannot attend and are still interested in helping with jail visits, or helping outside of jail with getting the MP3s to the children and their caretakers, simply post contact info below and Jonathan will reach out to you.

McCoy on Movies: White Boy Rick

September 14, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

True crime + a teenager = a stylish if somewhat
familiar 80s tale of crime and punishment

“You listen here, Richie, Jr. – you stay away from that Marshall Mathers, kid, ya hear me?!” Rick Wershe, Jr. (Richie Merritt, left) hands off as his father (Matthew McConaughey) prepares to roll out in a scene from WHITE BOY RICK. Credit: Scott Garfield. © 2018 CTMG, Inc. All rights reserved.

WATCH THE TRAILER(S) HERE:

KEY CAST MEMBERS: Matthew McConaughey, Richie Merritt, Bel Powley, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Brian Tyree Henry, Rory Cochrane, RJ Cyler, Jonathan Majors, Taylour Paige, Eddie Marsan with Bruce Dern and Piper Laurie

WRITER(S): Andy Weiss and Logan & Noah Miller

(Editors Note: Dayton Connection- Donald W. White Jr., a 17-year veteran with the Riverside police department, spent 10 days in Cleveland and Miami filming, playing the role of Detroit Police Sgt. Jimmy Harris and Alan Bomar Jones, a professional actor from Dayton  is also in this movie as a crooked copWillie Volson.)

DIRECTOR(S): Yann Demange

WEB SITE: https://www.whiteboyrick.movie/HERE’S THE STORY: It’s the mid-1980s. In Detroit. And Rick Wershe, Jr. (Richie Merritt) isn’t exactly living the American dream. His father (Matthew McConaughey) is a low-level gun dealers who makes modified weapons he sells to less-than-upstanding clientele. His sister Dawn (Bel Powley) is a drug addict in a bad relationship and Rick Jr. himself? Well, he’s currently not enrolled in school and spending his time between helping his dad with the family business and … Just living.

But things are about to change for Rick in a major way.

He’s about to start spending time with Lil Man (Jonathan Majors) and his posse … Which will attract the attention of FBI Agent Alex Snyder (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and FBI Agent Frank Byrd (Rory Cochrane) as well as Detroit PD’s own Detective Jackson (Brian Tyree Henry). Which, given his dad’s work, means he’s going to need to cooperate with them … Or else.

So … What happens when a 15 year-old kid gets involved with dope boys, the FBI and a desire to break free of his urban prison? An unbelievable story inspired by true events in the life of the kid who would come to be known as White Boy Rick.

WHO WILL LIKE THIS FILM THE MOST? Rappers; people who find true crime stories with outrageous details fascinating; people interesting the American legal system; Matthew McConaughey fans; 80s urban culture afficionados; fans of crime and punishment tales

WHO WON’T (OR SHOULDN’T) LIKE THIS MOVIE? Anyone who believes certain types of entertainment promote criminal activities; those who would like the film to go deeper into certain aspects of Wershe, Jr.’s story (substance over style)

SO IS IT GOOD, BAD OR JUST AWFUL? A movie that looks good, has solid performances and yet at the same time, manages not to add anything terribly new to the crime and punishment genre, White Boy Rick is not quite Scarface for millennials … But I’m sure it will serve many of them well in the meantime.

Based on the it-used-to-be-unbelievable-but-now-seems-quite-conceivable-given-today’s-headlines-with-teenagers, White Boy Rick features a strong performance by newcomer Richie Merritt, who’s street smart cool fits his character perfectly to be able to make the story real. Exhibiting a screen presence that is everything it needs to be, Merritt slides into his character’s world with a magnetism and charisma that is impossible to deny, more than holding his own alongside McConaughey, who delivers one of those performances award season voters tend to love. Director Yann Demerage makes the grit of Detroit’s 80s despair come fully alive on screen, making it quite viable to understand how it could produce a kid like Rick, Eminem or any number of impoverished youth who’s entire reality is guns, drugs and despair. At the same time, he is able to create moments that show the fragile hope of Richie’s youth – if you own a pair of roller skates, this movie is going to make you want to practice going backwards after you dig for your old mixtapes – and how he tries to do the right thing despite the worst possible means. What audiences will either be most enthralled or appalled by isn’t the film’s language, sex or drug use. Those things are now as common in American culture/entertainment; no, it will be with the film’s ending and whether or not the true facts of Wershe, Jr’s fate were justifiable. That’s what a logical movie watcher would expect, anyway – his choices were his own, but it’s the age-old question of does the time fit the crime(s) and what do the events of this (then) young man’s life say about life in America and the subcultures we like to act don’t exist in our happy, 22-minute sitcom with commercials world?

That is a question I cannot answer for you; I can only answer whether or not you should give White Boy Rick a watch or not. And that answer – for anyone who wants to watch an inherently compelling American story from one of its favorite decades – is “yes.”

OVERALL RATING (OUT OF FOUR POSSIBLE BUCKETS OF POPCORN):

Riley survives the attack, only to see her receive no justice due to a dirty system that lets Garcia’s associates responsible for the attack get off while trying to punish Riley for seeking justice.

Then she goes off the grid for 5 years … And now, Riley North is back. But the Riley North that LAPD detectives Carmichael (John Gallagher, Jr.) and Beltran (John Ortiz) is dead. And a lot of people that wronged her and her family are about to be, too.

WHO WILL LIKE THIS FILM THE MOST? Taken fans; people who used to love Alias but always wish it was more violent; feminists; independent women; Jennifer Garner fans; people who like action movies that actually worry about their plausibility a little bit; people who thought if Hollywood was going to remake Death Wish remixing it up a little bit would be a good thing

WHO WON’T (OR SHOULDN’T) LIKE THIS MOVIE? People not wanting to a watch a movie where guns are used basically without any thought to recourse in the wake of (seemingly) weekly mass shootings; people who don’t like gratuitous violence; anyone who’s over the concept of Death Wish-style revenge movies; anyone who cannot buy into the concept of the Garner’s character doing what Garner does for an 90 minutes-plus

SO IS IT GOOD, BAD OR JUST AWFUL? Peppermint – which takes its name from a scene that does exactly what you think it’s going to do in terms of setting up the rest of the flick – is one of those movies that you watch the trailer, you hear the catchphrases and go ‘Well, that’s pretty much all that’s going on in this joint.” Then you actually watch it and end up going “Well, that was better than I expected.”

As someone who’s seen it, I can tell you without a doubt that Peppermint – which features the most interesting version of anything Jennifer Garner has done character-wise in ages – is a nice 1970s-era exploitation flick with a 2018 flair that is much more enjoyable than you’d expect.

Peppermint works because Garner is fully-committed to the role, looks the part and plays it as straight as one can with a supporting cast that does the same. Much like Eminem on his latest effort Kamikaze, Garner’s North is a woman who feels she has lost everything and now has found a new purpose in life and is determined to make her foes suffer her wrath. But as opposed to going on a rampage with no humanity, North’s new environment makes her feel necessary, a feeling reflected in the film and in turn, is successfully projected to the audience.

Further helping the film are some minor twists, turns and gunplay/fight sequences that avoid being both hacky and add intensity to the film. Likewise, whereas veteran actor John Ortiz (not to be confused with cast mate Johnny Ortiz) adds a solid creditability factor as Beltran by keeping you guessing who is allegiance is to while making sure the film stays on course, Raba’s performance as Garcia – a villain who actually recognizes the danger Riley presents as opposed to instantly writing her off in classic “you’re gonna regret that!” fashion – makes the build to their eventual showdown equally appealing.

Make no mistake, however, watching Garner transform from loving soccer mom to basically Ronda Rousey in her UFC heyday coupled with a Seal Team 6-like focus is entertaining and empowering at the same time. Again, she doesn’t play the role with a “I’m gonna show them what a woman can do” fake coolness, she simply is cool because of what she does and how she does it. There is a reason that despite everything that happens in the world, we still will flock to a movie full of gratuitous violence.

If you’re in the mood to watch Jennifer Garner stomp out a seedy Los Angeles full of lowlifes, Peppermint will deliver a sweet treat – with quite a kick.
