Killer Brownies Breaks Out With New Look and Motto!

May 8, 2025 By Lisa Grigsby

Killer Brownie®, the gourmet brownie company known for its decadent, layered indulgence, is debuting a bold new look and a daring motto: “Live a Little.”  After more than 40 years of bringing joy to dessert lovers, the brand is transforming its image with striking new packaging and a fresh marketing approach. In partnership with Irresistible Foods Group, Killer Brownie’s goal is to disrupt the bakery, a space where indulgent treats exist without a brand name that truly sticks.

“The bakery section hasn’t seen a lot of change – and for a long time, that was just fine. But today’s consumer is looking for more,” said Chimene Mayne-Ross, Founder and CEO of Killer Brownie. “Killer Brownie is here to bring bold flavor, unapologetic indulgence, and a loud brand personality. We’re not just introducing something new – we’re making the bakery section a destination, giving people something they’ll be excited to seek out.”

Killer Brownie’s rebrand is rooted in four core characteristics: unapologetic, rebellious, confident, and mischievous. This spirit comes to life through vibrant, eye-catching packaging that makes an undeniable statement in the bakery. Featuring a signature bright blue color and bold typography, the new look is designed to break convention and draw consumers in. At the heart of the rebrand is the new motto, “Live a Little,” inviting fans to embrace indulgence.

“Killer Brownie is more than just a dessert; it’s an experience,” said Raouf Moussa, Chief Growth Officer at Irresistible Foods Group. “We’re building on the brand’s impressive legacy of flavor and bringing it to life in a way that can’t be ignored. By combining bold marketing with dynamic in-store presence, we’re giving fans a new reason to get excited about dessert.”

Norman Mayne

Founded in 1988 at Dorothy Lane Market in Dayton, Ohio, Killer Brownie began as a “best-kept secret,” a decadent treat made with rich layers and high-quality ingredients. Norman Mayne, the son of DLM founder Calvin Mayne, explained Dorothy Lane Market started doing boxed lunches, which was also a new concept, not only in Dayton, but just internationally,” Mayne-Ross said. “The dessert in that boxed lunch was the original Killer Brownie, so all of a sudden the Dayton business community started talking about what is this dessert that’s in this lunch and it quickly started to get a local cult following.” He shared that the average grocery store makes about 3% of sales from their baker, but DLM sees 12% from their bakery.

Over the years, its signature indulgence, innovative flavors, and loyal social following have transformed it from a local legend into a cult favorite. Now, through its partnership with Irresistible Foods Group, Killer Brownie is poised to make a national impact, expanding to over 15,000 retail doors and launching direct-to-consumer availability on KillerBrownie.com for the first time. With a bold new look and fearless attitude, the brand is ready to inspire cravings and bring its iconic indulgence to dessert lovers nationwide.

Products Launching on killerbrownie.com:

  • Chocolatier: A rich chocolate brownie made with premium milk chocolate chips—soft and moist with a thin crackle top.

Lobstermania Coming to All 3 DLM’s this Saturday

May 22, 2023 By Dayton937

It’s become a Memorial Day tradition for many families in the Miami Valley.  On Saturday hundreds will line up at each of the Dorothy Lane Markets to get their fresh live lobster brought in from Portland Maine by Ready Seafood.  They’ve been caught by independent harvesters in the pristine waters of Maine and Canada.

The lobsters will arrive Friday night at which time they’ll establish the price for the crustaceans. Also, you should know that  they don’t start selling lobsters until 9 am Saturday, May 27, the line begins to form much earlier. Over the years, many have made their own tradition of Lobstermania, forming friendships with one another as they wait for the sale to start.

You can purchase a live lobster or if you prefer they do offer a pre-cooked option.

DLM offers these cooking tips on their website:

Lobster Boiling Tips

Boiling a live lobster is easy and probably the best way for cooking 4 or more at one time. Fill a big pot with fresh water about 2/3 full. Add 1 to 2 Tbsp of salt per gallon of water. Bring to a boil and add lobsters. Start the timer when the water comes back to a boil. You can figure 6-7 minutes for a 1.25-lb lobster, 7-9 minutes for 1.5-lb lobster, and 10-12 minutes for a 2-lb lobster.

Lobster Steaming Tips

Steaming live lobster works great and tends to yield a more tender, less messy cooked lobster than boiling. Fill a large, deep pot with 2-3 inches of water. Bring to a boil, add the lobsters, cover, and steam, about 8 minutes per lb.

How do you tell when it’s cooked?

Remember, sometimes the lobster may be undercooked even if the shell is entirely red. Double check that the meat is a creamy white color with no translucent areas. Give a good tug on one of the antennae. If it pops off, the lobster is done. You can also insert an instant read thermometer into the underside of the tail. It should read 135-140°F.

Pre-Cooked Lobster Reheating Instructions

Wrap lobsters individually in foil. Place in a 350°F oven on a cooking sheet, belly up, and heat until warm. Or, place the foil-wrapped lobsters on the grill to warm.

How to Eat A Lobster:

What to Serve With Lobster:

A baked potato is a hearty side dish option to serve alongside it. Served with butter, just like your lobster, it can be garnished with parsley or dill for some extra flavor.

This is another standard side dish to serve with lobster, because it’s also served with butter. These more basic options ensure the lobster will remain the highlight of the meal.

A Caesar salad is an ideal side dish to pair with lobster, particularly if the serving is a whole lobster, because it can be very rich. A Caesar salad is relatively light and the garlic and lemon hints in the dressing will pair nicely with your crustacean.

DLM Killer Brownies Take On Pumpkin Spice

September 9, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

Pumpkin season is officially here, and the Dorothy Lane Market Bakery has something new to satisfy your craving. Introducing the new Pumpkin Killer Brownie®, featuring spiced pumpkin purée folded into a moist blonde brownie with crunchy pecans, white chocolate chips, and a velvety layer of that smooth signature caramel.

Available in stores at Dorothy Lane Market and Shop.DorothyLane.com seasonally, this particular new flavor is one that The Killer Brownie® Company has been on a mission to bring to life, but it was a matter of doing it just right. The Killer Brownie® Company Product Development & Quality Manager Julia Hoy says that they considered using a chocolate brownie base, but that ultimately the blonde brownie complemented the flavor profile just right to allow the pumpkin to shine. “In the end, the combination of our blonde brownie, caramel, spiced pumpkin, and white chocolate creates a very sweet holiday treat,” Hoy says. “When we bake these, the spiced pumpkin smell reaches well beyond our facility and into the surrounding neighborhoods.”

Killer Brownie® debuted in 1985 with The Original—a layered chocolate brownie chock-full of pecans that sandwiches a blanket of velvety caramel. This has been a beloved Dayton food treasure ever since, even voted No. 1 in Goldbelly’s national food bracket in 2016. Over the years, new varieties of Killer Brownie® have been added:

PB&J Killer Brownie

Confetti Killer Brownie

Cookie Dough Killer Brownie

Blonde Ambition Killer Brownie

Not-A-Nutter Killer Brownie

Not-A-Nutter Killer Brownie

German Chocolate Killer Brownie

Salted Caramel Killer Brownie

You can even ship a tray of assorted Killer Brownie Bites to you favorite

DLM Associate Wins Ohio Best Bagger, Featured on ESPN

August 8, 2020 By Dayton Most Metro

For the second year in a row, a DLM associate wins the Ohio Grocers Association’s Best Bagger Award. DLM Washington Square’s Fengning Liu represented Dorothy Lane Market at the Ohio Best Bagger competition, which took place in June. The competition, including the winner reveal, was nationally broadcasted on Saturday, August 8, 2020, as part of ESPN’s “Ocho” programming, which is the first time this competition has been picked up by ESPN.

In revealing the “Ocho” programming, the network explains that it’s “surprising fans with a nine-and-a-half-hour slate of seldom seen sports.” As the first-place winner in the Ohio Best Bagger Competition, Fengning, a Centerville High School senior, was awarded $1,000 and he will eventually progress to the National Best Bagger Competition sometime in 2021, which DLM’s Katie West placed second in this past February.

“It was a unique experience that I didn’t expect going into the competition. It’s cool to me that I was able to apply by normal work skills in a more competitive setting,” says Fengning of the experience. Matt Bayne, DLM Washington Square’s Front End Manager, couldn’t be more proud. “Fengning is one of the hardest working young people who I’ve worked with. He always has a can-do attitude and never hesitates to go out of his way to help a customer or fellow DLM associate. He genuinely loves helping others and we are fortunate to have him on our team.”

DLM Associate George Punter received Good Neighbor Award

July 23, 2018 By Guest Contributor

The Vera & Calvin Mayne Good Neighbor Award recognizes a Dorothy Lane Market associate who goes above and beyond to better serve the DLM family or the community at large. We are proud to announce that George Punter, Wine & Beer Manager at DLM Washington Square, is this year’s recipient for his involvement with Camp Emanuel.

George Punter receives The Vera & Calvin Mayne Good Neighbor Award

Camp Emanuel hosts day and resident fun-filled camps aimed at integrating kids with and without disabilities through a number of activities, from arts and crafts to horseback riding, archery, and fishing. George first became involved with Camp Emanuel in 1996 as a board member upon his wife’s encouragement. She worked for 45 years as a special education teacher, but saw a connection to George since the camp’s chief fundraising efforts are done through wine silent auctions, often featuring collectors’ finds. After three years on the board, George learned that Camp Emanuel was in need of counselors, so he gave it a shot and has been doing it for nearly 20 years. “It was a life-changing experience for me,” says George.

In addition to assisting with the summer camp program, George is also instrumental in helping plan Camp Emanuel’s annual fundraiser in the spring. It’s a live wine auction that typically raises $35,000 within three hours and fuels Camp Emanuel’s mission to promote decision making, team building, positive self-esteem, and encourages understanding and acceptance between children.

Everything’s Better with Bacon

January 25, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

In what’s become an annual tradition for Dorothy Lane Market, Baconfest is back!  DLM celebrates at all 3 locations with a weekend-long event, 11 am to 4 pm Saturday, Jan. 27, and Sunday, Jan. 28.

As you stroll through the grocery store to the sizzling smell of bacon, sampling stations will be set up where you can graze on free samples of DLM’s BLT, Bacon Jam, Boozy Bacon Barbecue Sauce, Bacon flavored Chocolate, Pizzas with bacon, bacon salsa and so much more!

Some things to look for:

DLM UNCURED BACON

DLM chose duBreton Natural Pork to make their own bacon. DuBreton, a Canadian supplier of this top quality pork, adheres to strict principles which include environmental stewardship, natural growing practices, and the humane treatment of animals. Their animals, which are raised on small family farms, are fed 100% vegetarian feed and are given no antibiotics or growth promotants, ever! Varieties of DLM Uncured Bacon include Hickory-Smoked, Cherrywood-Smoked, Applewood-Smoked, Peppered, Jalapeño, Certified Organic Applewood, or Turkey.

VOSGES MO’S MILK CHOCOLATE BACON BAR

Sulfite-free hickory smoked bacon is baked in small batches before it is hand chopped into fine nibbles. Alderwood smoked salt exudes a campfire aroma and perfectly offsets the sweetness of the chocolate.

TERRAPIN RIDGE FARMS HATCH CHILE BACON RANCH DIP

Don’t limit yourself on the endless possibilities of this sauce. Use as a dip for chips, veggies, or finger food, or add atop a sandwich or grilled fish.

KETTLE BRAND MAPLE BACON POTATO CHIPS

Kudos to Kettle Brand for developing this unusually flavored potato chip. A hint of smokiness erupts after opening the bag. The thick, hearty, extra-crunchy chips capture the taste of bacon and maple syrup. What’s also impressive is that Kettle Chips are GMO free, gluten free, have no MSG, and are safe for people with peanut allergies.

SEASONAL SELECTIONS GOURMET BACON SALSA

Located in Waynesville, Seasonal Selections produces salsas with no preservatives or fillers that can obscure the natural ingredients. Their bacon salsa starts off with a sweet, smoky flavor, and ends with a mild touch of spice. Makes a great topper for baked potatoes or omelets.

DLM MAPLE BACON GELATO

DLM Maple Bacon Gelato is made in small batches just 28 pints at a time. We start with our delicious DLM 100% Pure Maple Syrup and DLM’s nitrate- and nitrite-free uncured bacon cooked to a crunchy finish. Each is then mixed into an artisan gelato made 2.5 gallons at a time on imported gelato machines from Italy. The sweet, smoky flavor is addictive!

New this year, a Bacon Brew will be available on tap, brewed by Crooked Handle Brewing Co. So be sure and stop by Dorothy Lane Market this weekend and experience the joy of bacon.

Dorothy Lane Market Now Delivers

May 25, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

As more national grocery chains with locations based in Dayton, Ohio, unveil a delivery service as a part of their online grocery shopping experiences, locally owned and operated Dorothy Lane Market delivers, literally, adding delivery as an option to DLM Drive-Up earlier this month.

In February, the Dayton-based specialty grocery store announced DLM Drive-up, a revamp of its existing online grocery shopping service featuring a rebrand, new convenient location with a storefront for curbside pick-up, and enhanced website. “Earlier this year, our goal was to improve the overall experience of our online grocery shopping service. Now, we’re ready to move forward by enhancing the convenience factor even more,” says Patrick Arnold, DLM’s IT Director who oversees this segment of the business.
Delivery of groceries ordered via www.DLMDriveUp.com will be available to the neighborhoods surrounding the three DLM locations to the following zip codes: 45066, 45409, 45419, 45429, 45440, 45458, and 45459. “Right now, we want to focus on the areas nearby our stores and then expand from there,” says Sarah Linville, DLM Drive-Up manager. “With the success of our curbside pick-up, we think this is just an additional way DLM Drive-Up can make people’s lives easier, whether they are crunched for time or are unable to get out of the house for whatever reason.”

All grocery orders placed via www.DLMDriveUp.com will be shopped from the DLM Washington Square location for both the curbside and delivery options. Although curbside pick-up is offered seven days a week, delivery will be available Monday through Friday between the hours of 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. There is a $5.99 Shoppers Fee applied to every order placed via www.DLMDriveUp.com. For delivery, an additional $9.99 will be applied.

DLM hosts Eat Healthy Tours

March 24, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

Are you ready to start eating healthier, but just don’t know where or how to begin? We see it every day in action—shoppers walking through the store with their cell phone in hand trying to make sense of healthy eating resources. With the often confusing information given on calories, fat, and sugar, it can be mind-numbing.

That’s why Lori Kelch, a nutrition and wellness educator with more than 20 years of experience, will be teaming up with DLM to give free group Eat Healthy Tours once a month at each DLM location. Lori’s perspective is not that of a physician and should never be seen as something to replace those professional recommendations. But she can help you make sense of your nutrition goals, whatever they may be, by walking you through how to better understand labels and how to identify the right foods throughout the store that align with your goals. She’ll open your eyes to a new way of thinking about shopping so that you can put your plans into action.

April Tours:

DLM Springboro • Saturday, April 1 • 10-11 a.m.

DLM Oakwood • Saturday, April 22 • 10-11 a.m.
