DLM Food & Wine Show Tickets Now On Sale!

September 16, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Tickets now on sale for the foodie event of November.  If you’ve never been to this eating extravaganza, you’ll want to make plans now and get your ticket before it sells out.  Dorothy Lane Market turns their Springboro store into a strolling feast, with stations all around the store of gourmet treats. On Thursday, Nov 2nd starting at 7pm hundreds of foodies will be lined up to grab their badge and souvenir wine glass and eat and drink their way across the store.
Local Chefs are often invited to cook and provide samples of their favorite treats, wine and beer tasting stations are scattered through out the store and my favorite, the seafood stand, offering crap, lobster and shrimp for your dining pleasure will be set up in the dairy aisle.  Oh and the oyster station is usually set up across from the meat counter.  No tickets to fuss with, and no limits to the number of times you can visit a station.
Upstairs on the mezzanine level is often dedicated to cheeses and desserts. The sweets are often incredible works of art as well as tasty treats, so be sure and make your way upstairs.  And of course, many more wine stations will be set up there as well.
You’ll also find DLM staff wandering with trays full of bite sized goodies! Don’t take my word for it, check out the photo’s from last year here.

This year’s Food & Wine Show will not disappoint as it marks the 19th year of this palate-pleasing tradition with its signature spread of culinary delight and nearly 125 wines from around the world to sample. Plus, the Riedel stemware is yours to keep.  Tickets are $100 and believe me, it’s worth it!

Get your tickets now!

We’ll see you at the show!

Dayton is America’s First Certified Welcoming City

September 13, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Dayton is the first city in the United States to earn the status of Certified Welcoming in recognition of inclusiveness and integration of immigrants. Dayton City Commissioners announced the certification this morning, while
acknowledging the accomplishments of Welcome Dayton, the immigrant friendly
initiative begun in 2011.
“We are proud of the recognition Dayton has earned as being the first Certified Welcoming city in the country. This recognition affirms to the country what we have known in Dayton–our community is a welcoming place for everyone who chooses to make Dayton home,” said Mayor Nan Whaley. Welcome Dayton successfully completed a rigorous certification process throughWelcoming America, a non-partisan, national non-profit organization.

Welcoming America evaluated local efforts to establish an inclusive community though government leadership, civic engagement, equitable access, education, economic development, and connected and safe communities.
“Since the inception of Welcome Dayton, Dayton has been a leader in the welcoming movement,” said City Commissioner Matt Joseph. “With the recognition as the first Certified Welcoming city, we are excited to continue to lead the country on creating more welcoming and inclusive cities that benefit all residents. We have received this recognition because everyone in the community has recognized that we all have a responsibility to make Dayton welcoming for everyone who makes Dayton home.”
Welcoming America launched the Certified Welcoming program in April 2017 to establish a formal designation for cities and counties that have taken action on their commitment to welcoming and met the high bar set by the Welcoming Standard. “Communities like Dayton offer an alternative to the divisive rhetoric around immigration and show how inclusion is good for our economy, neighborhoods and future,” added David Lubell, executive director of Welcoming America. “Certified Welcoming is the first of its kind initiative to identify the standard for other communities that want to follow this growing trend and show that they are welcoming not only in word, but in deed.”
Immigrants in Dayton have made significant contributions to its neighborhoods and the local economy. According to research published by the New American Economy, immigrants have contributed to reversing the city’s population decline and have preserved and created new jobs in the community. “We are thrilled that Dayton has been certified as the first welcoming community in the country by Welcoming America. This distinction provides further proof that the Welcome Dayton initiative has been impactful for our community, creating a climate that encourages the social and economic empowerment of all of our citizens. TheDayton Area Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to the continued growth and vibrancy of the Dayton region, and this recognition supports those efforts in a big way,” said Phillip L. Parker, President & CEO, Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce. The certification is for three years, after which Dayton will go through a recertification process to ensure it is continuing to meet the Welcoming Standard and has maintained its commitment to welcoming.

“Knowing Dayton is a Certified Welcoming city makes me excited to raise my family here. The certification demonstrates that the culture and diversity I bring to the community are not only valued but also considered when making decisions,” said Yonathan Kebede, Dayton resident and Welcome Dayton Committee member.

What is Welcoming America?
Welcoming America is a non-partisan, national nonprofit that leads a growing movement of inclusive communities becoming more prosperous by helping everyone know they belong. We provide a roadmap and support for places to reduce barriers to full participation and build bridges between immigrants and long-time residents through direct contact and dialogue. Welcoming America believes that all people, including immigrants and refugees, are valued contributors who are vital to our shared future.

What is Welcome Dayton?
Welcome Dayton is a community initiative administered by the City of Dayton Human Relations Council. Welcome Dayton promotes immigrant integration into the greater Dayton region by encouraging business and economic development; providing access to education, government, health and social services; ensuring
equity in the justice system; and promoting an appreciation of arts and culture.

Say Goodbye To Warped Wing Pints

September 12, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Beginning September 18th Warped Wing Brewing Co. will be transitioning all of their 16 oz. 4-pack can offerings to 12 oz. 6-packs. This will include all of their core beers, seasonal and limited edition runs. In addition, Warped Wing has purchased a versatile bottling line for special limited production offerings.

“We’ve put a lot of time and effort into the decision to transition to a 12 oz. can,” said Nick Bowman, Managing Partner & V.P. of Sales & Marketing. “Last year we engaged in a fairly extensive customer brand survey. What we learned from our customers was that even though they liked our 16 oz. canned beer offerings and thought they were unique, they ultimately prefer 12 oz. 6-pack portioning. This was a practical decision that also gave us the opportunity to evolve our brand look and feel. Consumers will see a slightly modified design of the cans. This new packaging decision also runs in parallel to a ramped up retail presence this Fall” said Bowman.

“In addition to the new cans, our new bottling line will be commissioned in November for our Bourbon Barrel Aged program as well as some of our limited beers. We will offer 2 different bottle sizes: 375 ml and 500 ml bottle size. We are very excited to add small batch bottle selections to our portfolio. It’s unimaginable the potential we will have to offer our customers” said Bowman.

John Haggerty, Warped Wing’s Managing Partner & Brewmaster is working with Dipran S.R.L., an Italian manufacturer of bottle fillers, to create a state-of–the-art bottle filling line that will cater to ever-changing customer tastes. “The bottling line has some unique features and flexibility” said Haggerty. “It gives us so much greater opportunity, versatility and capability” he said.

To help celebrate this transition with their customers, Warped Wing will be hosting a 12 oz. can party at the brewery on Thursday, September 21st in the taproom at 5PM. Core 12 oz. 6-packs as well as the latest Fall seasonal, CreepShow will be available for carryout and on tap. The initial rollout of the new cans to wholesale will start on Monday, September 18th.

Brewgrass Becomes Miami Valley Bluegrass Heritage Festival

September 11, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

What do you do when it’s rained on your new festival its first two years, but you’re determined to make a go if it?

The folks in Miamisburg, OH decided to give the event a new name, and raise sufficient corporate sponsorship to come back in 2017 as a free festival. So on September 16, the Miami Valley Bluegrass Heritage Festival will be held in Riverfront Park along the Miami River.

Fans are invited to bring their lawn chairs, blankets, and umbrellas but no coolers, bottles or alcoholic beverages can be brought in. Food, beverages, and alcohol sales will be enabled in the park. Pets also need to stay at home.

Promoter Max Nunery shared a few words about the thinking that led to the new look and name for 2017.

“We decided to make a few changes this year. First, a new name, one that focuses on the huge, and very important role the Miami Valley has had in the history of bluegrass music. As you know, many pioneers and legends have spent years calling the Miami Valley home during their career. The Osborne Brothers, Larry Sparks, and Red Allen all emerged from Dayton in the 1960s along with other greats Mike Lilly & Wendy Miller, Frank Wakefield, Moon and Joe Mullins, and the late great Harley Allen.

Secondly, becoming a FREE family friendly event for all to enjoy this year. We will have raffles, 50/50s Brazos and funny Family Fun bounce houses until about 7:00 p.m., with music the rest of the evening. We are now a non-profit organization, and are working very close with The city of Miamisburg. They have been very supportive, and this year decided to blend their Artisan Craft vendor festival into ours to allow better shopping options to our festival patrons, and are involved in the logistic help as well.

Rain had all but ruined last years event, and did stagger our momentum a bit. I know the potential for a great event is here in my hometown. The first year in 2015 drew out a couple thousand people after the rain stopped. This year I added bluegrass legend, and Lebanon naive Larry Sparks, along with no fee in hopes to draw out more folks.

Miamisburg is a great environment for a community festival like ours. The festival is nestled in between the river valley which the downtown restaurants and shops all border on the east side of the festival grounds. Lots of local shops, and restaurants to check out while your here. Please come celebrate the rich bluegrass heritage of the Miami Valley! Bring your lawn chair, and settle in for a great day of music and fun.”

Over the course of the summer, the festival staff have hosted a series of Saturday night bluegrass shows at the Star City Brewing Company, located just a few blocks from the riverfront. These are building up some excitement for a fun day of music in September, with one show left next weekend.

Sat, Sept 16th 11am – 11:3opm, Riverfront Park in Miamisburg

Scheduled to perform:

Larry Sparks
The Clay Hess Band
Hammertowne
Nightflyer
Branded Bluegrass
The Surly Gentlemen
The Vintage Ramblers
The Repeating Arms

Mudlick Debuts New Fall Menu & New Signage

September 7, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Things keep getting better at  the downtown gastropub that just opened in July at the corner of Second & St. Clair.  Their new outdoor sign is being installed today and they will be rolling out their fall menu tomorrow.

As Mudlick Tap House owner Jen Dean shares, with a new kitchen and a lot more seats than their previous Germantown location, it takes time to learn what works and what doesn’t in a new place. Like most new business, they are making adjustments,  starting to figure out when their busiest times are so they can staff accordingly and learning the flow of the space.

The fall menu adds some items they’ve been running as specials and introduces some new items like pan seared scallops, chicken tenders and chili cheese fries as well as a vegan saute while removing some of the items that weren’t working aa well.  Jen shares, “We’ve payed special attention to menu items that allow our guests to be in and out for their lunch hour.”

If you catch them between lunch and dinner take advantage  of their “Happiness Hour”  which runs from 3-6pm Monday through Friday, offers $2 off their shareable and small plates and draft beer, as well at 1/2 off bottles of wine.  Jen says they’ve been steadily getting busier and “we’re already booking lots of holiday parties in our 2nd floor venue, it’s great for groups of  30 on up to  a group of 140 from Square One Salon for their staff celebration .”

They recently rolled out their Saturday and Sunday brunch, which starts at 11am, and Jen told us “the bloody mar bar has been a big hit with our housemate pickled veggies and the crab hash is our shining star brunch entree, so far.”

The  industrial rustic space with sleek stainless countertop bar, exposed brick walls and handmade wooden tables make for an inviting space for a casual meal.  A small patio out front allows for al fresco dining, when the weather cooperates.  And while it can be a little noisy in the building, Jen says they’ll be ordering some sound control panels for the ceiling very soon!  Stop by for a meal, and tell them DaytonDining sent you!

Dayton Art Institute Names Chief Curator

September 3, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

The Dayton Art Institute has announced the appointment of Jerry N. Smith, Ph.D., as the museum’s Chief Curator, effective September 26.

“After an extensive national search, we are excited to welcome Dr. Jerry Smith to the museum and the Dayton community,” said The Dayton Art Institute’s Director & CEO Michael R. Roediger. “Dr. Smith possesses an extensive curatorial, scholarly and administrative background–skills that will be immediately utilized as the museum prepares for its centennial in 2019.”

In his role as Chief Curator, Smith will provide leadership to the museum’s curatorial department, guiding the vision of future collection installations and special exhibitions. A key part of that will be the reinstallation and reinterpretation of the museum’s permanent collection galleries, planned as part of The DAI’s centennial celebrations. The Dayton Art Institute’s permanent collection numbers more than 26,000 objects, with as many as 1,000 on view at any time.

“I’m excited to join the Dayton community and am looking forward to working with The Dayton Art Institute’s team,” Smith said. “With a world-class collection and storied history, The DAI has a tremendous amount to celebrate with its coming centennial. I’m honored to be part of that celebration.”

Smith most recently served as the Hazel and William Hough Chief Curator and Interim Director at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, Florida. Prior, he held leadership positions at the Phoenix Art Museum for more than a decade, where he began as associate curator in 2005, was appointed to Curator of American and Western American Art in 2009, and later to Curator of American and European Art to 1950 and Art of the American West in 2014.

In these positions he introduced numerous works into the museums’ collections and oversaw more than 40 exhibitions that spanned the art of the Renaissance to American modernism and contemporary art of the American West. The diverse exhibitions he has curated or co-curated include Georgia O’Keeffe: Ingénue to Icon, Riding Tall: The Cowboy in Art, Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Leicester and The Power of Observation and Andy Warhol: Portraits.

He was a contributing organizer and catalogue essayist for In Contemporary Rhythm: The Art of Ernest L. Blumenschein and Cézanne and American Modernism. Smith authored Howard Post: Western Perspectives, and was co-author of Don Coen: The Migrant Series. He recently collaborated on a chapter for Visitor-Centered Exhibitions and Edu-Curation in Art Museums (2017).

Smith holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art history from Arizona State University and received his Ph.D. in the history of art from the University of Kansas. Active in The Association of Art Museum Curators, he serves in career support groups, as liaison between mentors and mentees, and currently sits on the governance and nominating committee.

Dining at Dewberry 1850 Inside the Marriott at UD

August 31, 2017 By Lisa Grigsby

Had a chance to dine at the new restaurant Dewberry 1850 today,  inside the  Marriott at the University of Dayton Hotel. The re-design is beautiful, bright and airy with several different areas conducive to working meeting with power even wired into the tables,  as well as window tables of two and three for more intimate dining.  They feature New American Cuisine with locally sourced ingredients,, a large selection of regional craft beers as well as spirits.  While they’ve just barely opened, they already have scheduled their first beer dinner with Yellow Springs Brewery for Thurs, Sept 28th  from 6-8pm.

The name of the eatery is directly tied to the  University history, as explained on their website;

In the middle of a cholera epidemic, the Bishop of Cincinnati sent Father Leo Meyer, S.M., to minister to the sick at Emmanuel parish in Dayton. Here, he met John Stuart, whose little daughter died of cholera the year before. Mr. Stuart wanted to sell his Dayton property and return with his wife to Europe. Father Meyer gave him a medal of St. Joseph and a promise of $12,000 in return for Dewberry Farm — 125 acres of vineyards, orchards, a mansion and farm buildings

On July 1, 1850, St. Mary’s School for Boys, a frame building that not long before had housed farm hands, opened its doors to 14 primary students from Dayton. Known at various times as St. Mary’s School, St. Mary’s Institute and St. Mary’s College, the school assumed its present identity in 1920.

Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, they bill themselves as the perfect place to Eat, Drink & Gather.

We started with the  Divvy & Split section of the menu, which offered standards like pretzel, wings, tacos  and as well as bruschetta BLT’s, Flying Pigs, and what we ordered: Mac-N-Cheese Croquettes,  -panko crumbs l cheddar l mascarpone l roasted garlic sour cream,  $11 for 3.

On to the Tossed & Assembled portion of the lunch menu, which offers five sandwiches and five salads. I had the M Burger– Angus beef l bacon l cheddar l LTO l toasted brioche   $14

My lunch companion ordered the Brown Street Club – Legrand poblano aioli l carved turkey l smoked bacon l shaved romaine l tomato l raisin bread  $12

Food was good, atmosphere very welcoming and looking forward to going back and trying both lunch and dinner.   If you’ve been, let us know what you think in the comments below:
