Dare To Defy Takes On Godspell

September 28, 2015 By Sarah Caplan

iconsquare12002427_712984222165411_4372438097935633000_oGodspell is an old favorite, for good reason. It tells the story of Jesus’ last days, using gentle parables from The Bible and an easy-going, ultimately touching approach. Dare To Defy’s founder, and the director of this production, Becki Norgaard, thinks this helps make the show a great fit for D2D.  As she says,“One reason Godspell is ideal for us is that the staging, message and cast size make it ideal for that intimate experience in the Mathile. In addition, the music is so beautiful, complicated and diverse and I humbly assert that Dare to Defy has been fortunate to attract some of the most vocally talented actors in the area so our talent base also makes this an ideal show for us.”

It’s true that Dare To Defy can attract some pretty powerful voices and talents. This is because of it’s unique mission, that includes allowing on-and-off-stage talents “the chance to be compensated for their time and artistic contributions, allowing us to present consistent, high-quality entertainment that is assessable, relatable and affordable.” Dare To Defy is a professional company, working in the community to provide opportunities for Dayton’s deep talent pool to create work that can support the company’s artistic vision, while simultaneously helping to support themselves. Norgaard sees it as a local-love issue as well – if you’re going to pay for tickets to a show, pay to support artists who live, work, and pay taxes right here in Dayton.

The cast of Godpsell as they “Learn Their Lessons Well”

It hasn’t been easy to get off the ground. Much like restaurants, many start-up theatre companies don’t last long enough to really solidify their mission. Dare To Defy, in their second season, has worked hard to cement themselves on the local landscape. Norgaard says one of the biggest things they’ve learned so far has been, “how much we have to learn. We are forging our own path. Creating something new is hard but extremely rewarding.” That means learning how to build your own audience, how to be a touring company in your own town, marketing, fund-raising and “most importantly how to recognize our mistakes, own them and continually strive to improve as an organization.”

Dayton’s a small town, and when it comes to our theatre community, it’s absolutely tiny. As a result, associations and personal relationships run deep and are important. Collaboration is huge, and Dare To Defy has made themselves a welcome addition to the Victoria Theatre Association venues, performing both on the Victoria stage (for instance, with their upcoming production of Footloose) and in the versatile, intimate black-box Mathile theatre inside the Schuster Performing Arts Center. It is in the Mathile that Norgaard will stage Godspell. As she says, “The director’s vision, the set, the choreography, the light design, the sound design, the music direction and of course the cast all combine to make something familiar into a new experience that an audience has not seen.”

Godspell debuted off-Broadway in the spring of 1971, with music written by Stephen Schwartz (with whom you might be familiar from going on to write the music for Wicked 30+ years later) and has been a theatrical mainstay since then. Though the subject matter is inherently religious in nature, secular audiences have never stayed away from the show. Norgaard is hoping the audiences come away from this production “reminded of the simplicity but overwhelming transformative quality of love, acceptance and grace…that leaves them feeling just a little bit more hopeful.”

We could all use a little more love, grace and hope.

Godspell opens October 16th at the Mathile Theatre. The show runs two weekends, Friday nights at 8 pm, and two performances on Saturday, 2 pm and 8 pm. Tickets are available at www.ticketcenterstage.com or by calling the Victoria Theatre Association Box Office at 937-228-3630

Children’s Performing Arts of Miamisburg presents: The Music Man!

March 5, 2014 By Sarah Caplan Leave a Comment

8233540896292398845Children’s Performing Arts of Miamisburg

The Music Man

The Theatre: Children’s Performing Arts of Miamisburg, or CPAM, is a non-profit children’s theater dedicated to promote, to all area youth, the appreciation of the performing arts through education, practice and performance. Our goal is to enrich the lives of those participants by strengthening the performing arts community. They feature classes and performances in the historic Baum Opera house in Downtown Miamisburg.

The Show: Later this week, the kids of CPAM are going to take on Meredith Wilson’s classic piece of Americana, The Music Man. This musical tells the tale of Harold Hill, a traveling con artist salesman who inspires the stiff-necked citizenry of fictional River City, Iowa to invest in the future of their town by putting together a Boys Band. Of course, Hill himself will lead it, and all the instruments, music and uniforms are available from him. For a fee. He never expected to meet Marian Paroo, the suspicious librarian-cum-piano teacher. The result is a beloved piece of musical theatre that gives us the songs, “76 Trombones,” “(Ya Got) Trouble,” and “Shapoopi,” among many others. By the end, you’ll wish you could play right along with the band.

Dates: Music Man opens Saturday, March 8th. The times and dates run as follows: 3/8 and 3/15, 2 pm and 7 pm. 3/9 and 3/16, 3 pm and next week, 3/13 and 3/14 at 7 pm.

Tickets: Tickets are available by following the link at CPAM’s page, here, and the prices are $17 for reserved seating, $15 for general admission and $13 for seniors (60+), military members and children ages 3-11.

Location: The Baum Opera House is located at 15 First St in Downtown Miamisburg.

TICKET GIVEAWAY
DMM has 2 pairs of tickets fro the Thursday, March 13th 7pm show.  To enter our drawing, please like this post and fill out the form below.  We’ll announce our winner this Friday. [form 55 “DMM Contest Entry – Generic”]

Welcome back! You know, whenever I type that  phrase, I think of the theme song to the 1970’s sitcom “Welcome Back, Kotter!” Only, in this case, your dreams aren’t your ticket. Your tickets are your dreams. And in each one of the pieces I’m synopsizing for you, there are dreams a’plenty. For safety, for glory, for happiness…and maybe just for a really good-looking man.

Was that too much? I may be waxing poetic. Probably best, then, just to dive right in!

Limited Engagement!

War Horse

Avenue Q

AVENUE Q production pic 3The Human Race Theatre Company

The Skinny: Don’t let the puppets and the “Sesame Street” skin tones confuse you; THIS IS NOT FOR KIDS. Avenue Q is a riotously funny, politically incorrect and downright raunchy Tony Award-winning musical about recent college grad Princeton and his funny, sometimes furry, friends who live at the very end of New York’s (in)famous Alphabet City. Featuring songs like, “Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist,” “It Sucks To Be Me,” and of course that battle cry of the internet age: “The Internet Is For Porn!” seriously this show is NOT FOR KIDS. But it is for adults who like to laugh really hard.

Dates: Through June 29th.

Tickets: Please visit the Human Race Theatre Company website at www.humanracetheatre.org.  Have we mentioned that this production is NOT FOR KIDS?

The Sound Of Music

lac_sound-of-music-300x211La Comedia Dinner Theatre

The Skinny: Ok, this one is safe for all the family…unless they’re offended by cherubic singing siblings and Nazi-fighting nuns! This is the well-loved classic,  and a perennial crowd pleaser. Join The Captain, Maria and all 7 children as they sing, dance and, eventually, cross the Alps.

Dates: Through 6/30

Tickets: Please visit the La Comedia website at www.lacomedia.org

Opening this Weekend!

Legally Blonde The Musical

Legally-BlondeBeavercreek Community Theatre

The Skinny: To quote its opening number: “Oh my god, oh my god you guys!”, it’s another production of Legally Blonde! This charming and enjoyable musical (based on the movie) takes the stage now at Beavercreek Community Theatre. Come join the plucky Elle Woods as she follows her “true love” to Harvard Law. There she gets a taste of hard work, the real world, and maybe learns to rely on her smarts more than her, well, blondeness.

Date: Opening 6/21 and running through 6/30

Tickets: Please visit the Beavercreek Community Theatre website at www.bctheatre.com

FutureFest Update:

Hello again, fellow theatre-lover! Love, it seems, is in the air. ‘Tis the season, after all. We’re nigh onto everyone’s favorite holiday for the expression of love, as well as the simultaneous day of eye-rolling by all the people who “like, totally do not accept the validity of this commercially-mandated Hallmark holiday.” Regardless of on which side of the rose (petal or thorn) you find yourself, the fact is that theatre makes a great date. Even if you only take yourself. So, what kind of theatre do we have to offer in the next 2 weeks? I thought you’d never ask!

Joel Sartore (photo credit: we're assuming not Joel Sartore)

In this hour-long lecture Sartore will recount stories of assignments that have taken him to some of the world’s most beautiful and challenging environments, from the Arctic to the Antarctic, and he has photographed everything from the remote Amazon to beer-drinking, mountain-racing firefighters in the United Kingdom.

1913: The Great Dayton Flood

Wright State Theatre Department

The Skinny: If you know anything about Dayton, you’ve probably learned that it was devastated by a terrible flood in 1913. In March, of 1913, to be more specific. Coming up, as we are, on the centennial anniversary of this formative moment in Dayton’s history, Wright State’s staging of this “epic parable with gospel blues” is appropriate and effective. Staged with a cast and crew of over 40 students from the department, this piece tells several different stories of those nights of terror. Helping to bring this to life are voice-overs from beloved native son Martin Sheen, Ruby Dee and the late Ossie Davis.

Dates: This production will close Sunday, February 10th.

Auditions!

The Retreat from Moscow by William Nicholson

The Dayton Playhouse

Directed by Dodie Lockwood

Times: Saturday, February 16, and Sunday, February 17 at 2:00 p .m. both days.

The Skinny: The Retreat from Moscow is the story of a thirty-three year marriage at the breaking point. How well do we know the people we marry? Is it wrong to decide it’s time to be honest? Is love enough to save a family? This celebrated author of Shadowlands tells the powerful story of a husband who decides to be truthful in his marriage, and the wife and son whose lives will never be the same. With coiled intensity and embracing empathy this drama shines a breathtakingly natural light on the fallout of a shattered marriage.
Characters:
Edward – A history teacher in his late 50’s. Edward is easy-going, logical and has been happy to accept the status quo in the marriage as much as possible.
Alice – A housewife in her late 50’s who is passionate about poetry. She is frustrated, combative and capable of any action to incite an emotional response from Edward.
Jamie – A bachelor in his mid-30’s. He is rational and is the family’s emotional center. Jamie is torn by his love and respect for both parents, while he himself has been unsuccessful in love.
All characters will have a slight British accent. Accents are encouraged at auditions, but not required.
Requirements: Auditions will consist of readings from the script; no monologues or memorized auditions are required. Resumes are encouraged for actors new to Dayton Playhouse, but not required. Please bring a list of all schedule conflicts between February 17 and April 21.
Performance dates: Performances of The Retreat from Moscow will be April 12-21. If you have questions, or need additional information, please email the director at dodieannl@yahoo.com.

Ok, so, where else but Dayton can you, in the span of a single fortnight, see a lecture about man-eating pigs, a play about a football legend, a play about women’s clothing and a piece about a transformative moment in local history? Seriously! If there’s not something here to fit your particular theatre-going palate, well, wait a couple weeks and I’ll be back with a fresh batch of temptations!
