DAYTON LIVE Announces 2021-2022 Season

Dayton Live announced the 2021-2022 lineup for Premier Health Broadway in Dayton, Projects Unlimited Star Attractions, Universal 1 Credit Union Music Series, Dayton Children’s Family Series and the National Geographic Live Series, sponsored by Subaru of America and Wagner Subaru.

“For months and months, we’ve waited and waited to be able to say when Broadway will be back in Dayton,” stated Ty Sutton, Dayton Live President & CEO. “We’re thrilled to be announcing not only the Premier Health Broadway in Dayton lineup, but also as many additional performances and series as we possibly can. ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ Review – Wright State University – The Winds of Change

There are some very special musicals that have stood the test of time because no matter how often you see them they still remain fresh, profound and necessary. Case in point: composer Jerry Bock, lyricist Sheldon Harnick and librettist Joseph Stein’s 1964 classic Fiddler on the Roof, terrifically presented by Wright State University in the Festival Playhouse of the Creative Arts Center.

The sheer magnetism of Fiddler occurs in its tuneful prologue. An entire town pauses to joyfully share what you should know about their lives, responsibilities, hopes, religion, and traditions. But what they don’t know is that their little spot of the world – the tiny village of Anatekva on the eve of the Russian Revolution circa 1905 – will ultimately and drastically transform beyond comprehension. Girls will be taught to read. Men will dance in public with women. A daughter will chose to love outside her faith despite ridicule. Anatekva itself will cease to exist. And along the way, there is great anticipation of how poor dairyman Tevye and his family will cope with the winds of change.

Josh Beasley’s playful, lighthearted and physical portrayal of Tevye fittingly conveys the role’s affectionate qualities as a loving father whose frequent chats with God give him purpose and direction. Megan Valle, stern yet comedic as Tevye’s wife Golde, exudes strength and authority, but also conveys tender sensitivity. In fact, during one of the most gorgeously staged renditions of Sunrise, Sunset I have seen, Valle spins her introspective lines into beautiful morsels of bewilderment brought about by the passage of time. Kayli Modell (Tzeitel), Danielle Bessler (Hodel), Emma Buchanan (Chava), Michaella Waickman (Shprintze), and Dana Bixler (Bielke) are uniformly dynamic as Tevye and Golde’s daughters. In particular, Modell is a refreshingly headstrong Tzeitel and Bessler delivers a phenomenally lyric-driven Far From the Home I Love absolutely testifying to the fact that Hodel’s unwavering love for her family will burn bright no matter where she resides (“I must go” never sounded so sure or lovingly defiant). Aaron Roitman (Motel), Kyle Miller (Perchik), and knockout dancer Philip Stock (Fydeka) are equally and respectively appealing as the suitors of Tzeitel, Hodel and Chava. Roitman’s awkward charm, Miller’s determined spirit (Now I Have Everything leaps forth as a meaningful epiphany), and Stock’s fiery flair are fine attributes. The cast also contains notable portrayals from Isabella Andrews as an appropriately nosey and concerned Yente, Joe Green as a firmly grounded Lazar Wolf, Joey Kennedy making the most of the easily perturbed Mendel in unexpected ways, Justin Matthews as the intimidating Constable, Louis Kurtzman as the Rabbi, the aforementioned Bixler as Grandma Tzeitel, Halle Augenstein as the Fiddler, and Rachel Mary Green who blends opera, pop and R&B with ghoulish glee as the frightening Fruma Sarah in Tevye’s Dream.

Director W. Stuart McDowell incorporates a few touches from Broadway’s stunning 2016 Tony-nominated Fiddler revival (for example, featuring all of Tevye and Golde’s daughters in Matchmaker), but adds specific elements of his own which broaden the story’s scope. In addition to allowing Tzeitel one last chance to take a snapshot of the mind while in her family’s presence, McDowell astutely aims for deeper resonance in the exceptional final sequence. Seeing the citizens of Anatevka separate to start their lives anew gives haunting credence to the current plight of refugees throughout the world. In fact, there is a brief, awe-inspiring moment implying that Tevye and his family have arrived in New York City as the spirit of the Fiddler guides them from above. McDowell’s first-rate artistic team includes choreographer Teressa Wylie McWilliams (an exuberant To Life and lively series of Wedding Dances, the aforementioned Tevye’s Dream, and luminous Chava Sequence are among her excellently character-focused routines), set designer David J. Castellano, lighting designer Matthew P. Benjamin, costumer Naomi Reisner, sound designer Ryan Burgdorf (expertly crafting the destruction pivotal to the distressing Act 1 finale), dialect coach Deborah Thomas, and music director Scot Wolley who conducts a superb onstage orchestra.

Now more than ever, it’s time to reassess the relatable potency and urgent relevancy of this marvelous tale of family, community and hope.

Fiddler on the Roof continues through Nov. 19 in the Festival Playhouse of the Creative Arts Center, 3640 Col. Glenn Hwy., Fairborn. Act One: 100 minutes; Act Two: 45 minutes. In related news, Broadway producer and author Jack Viertel will speak at Wright State University on Tuesday, Nov. 28 courtesy of the Musical Theatre Initiative. Viertel is Vice-President of Jujamcyn Theatre, one of Broadway’s largest and most successful producers, the artistic director of Encores series at New York City Center, and author of the book The Secret Life of the American Musical. Viertel, a member of MTI’s advisory board, will give a talk on his book from 10 a.m. to noon in the Creative Arts Center’s Jubilee Theatre (Directing Lab) and from 1 to 3 p.m. will give an interview and discussion with MTI Director, Joe Deer, in the same space. ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ Review – Cedarville University – Prolonged Exodus

Cedarville University’s production of Joseph Stein, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick’s classic 1964 musical “Fiddler on the Roof,” based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, is deflated by awkward, inadequate musicality.

Barring technical difficulties, there’s no reason in the world why anybody’s staging of “Fiddler” should produce an Act 1 heading toward two hours. But this is exactly what’s happened at Cedarville due to weak music direction by conductor Carlos Elias who hasn’t mastered the timing within Bock and Harnick’s score, superbly accenting an endearing story of a poor Jewish family coping with change in their tiny Russian village of Anatevka in 1905.

In Elias’ hands, the waltzes are startlingly slow (“Sunrise, Sunset” is particularly painful) and the sprightly sentiments (“If I Were a Rich Man,” “To Life,” snippets of “Tevye’s Dream”) lack vigor. The only number that truly resonates in terms of musicianship is “Do You Love Me?,” an Act 2 gem containing an engaging, conversational essence (akin to “I Remember It Well” from “Gigi”) that constantly flows thereby avoiding any sense of derailment.

Thankfully, “Do You Love Me?” is also a signature moment because of the wonderful rapport and lyric-driven astuteness of Robert Rhodes and Anna Caroline Porter as Tevye and Golde. Throughout the tune, which finds Tevye and Golde tenderly reminiscing about their marriage, Rhodes and Porter beautifully connect with humor, depth and a mutual understanding that their love will survive no matter what the future holds. Excellent portrayals under the direction of Diane Conrad Merchant extend to the sharp, witty David Widder-Varhegyi as humble tailor Motel and a marvelously firm Madison Hart as the daring Chava who defies her family with dramatic results.

Choreographer Carrie Anthony’s commendable routines bursting with personality and colorful exchanges, Robert Clements’ first-rate scenic and lighting design, and Debbie Hamrick’s attractive period costumes are additional assets of this presentation still in search of its musical pulse.

“Fiddler on the Roof” continues through Feb. 8 in the DeVries Theatre of the Stevens Student Center at Cedarville University, 251 N. Main St., Cedarville. ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ Review – Human Race Theatre Company – Tradition in Transition Ticket Contest

The Human Race Theatre Company’s refreshingly intimate take on Joseph Stein, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick’s timeless 1964 musical “Fiddler on the Roof” is an enormously pleasant experience inside its cozy Loft Theatre.

Director Kevin Moore deftly and breezily swaps the sweeping heft typically associated with the material for a smaller, character-conscious approach ripe with immediacy and emotional resonance. His communal, campfire-esque concept, carried out by an excellently cohesive cast of 25 including four musicians who double in smaller roles, unquestionably allows the audience to feel as if they’re right in the heart of the tiny village of Anatevka circa 1905. In fact, when one resident wistfully sung about his quaint surroundings while seated in the aisle next to me, I nearly joined in. After all, by that point, this faith-based community grounded in tradition yet rocked by unexpected transition became so relatable that genuine concern for their future well-being was inescapable. But that’s what makes “Fiddler” so special and practically bulletproof as one of the best musicals ever created. You absolutely care about the characters, specifically as stakes are raised in the darker Act 2 marvelously contrasting the sunny prologue bursting with promise, purpose and possibility.

Drew Pulver is a wonderfully earthy, credibly conflicted everyman in the plum role of poor milkman Tevye, the amiable father of five daughters and the popular glue that holds Anatevka (and this musical) together. As Tevye copes with a whirlwind of change and treasures his chit-chats with God, Pulver’s easygoing, mildly contemporary persona and outstanding vocals (“If I Were a Rich Man” doesn’t disappoint) propel his multifaceted characterization. Still, the volatile anger he displays when Tevye dismisses his daughter Chava for wanting to marry outside the faith is a significant revelation. Chills arise as Tevye is suddenly caught in an utterly disgusted, nearly abusive frame of mind unlike any production of “Fiddler” I have seen, including Canada’s Stratford Festival three months ago. The dynamic Rachel Coloff, who appeared in David Leveaux’s mammoth 2004 Broadway revival of “Fiddler,” shines with great sternness and sharp timing as Tevye’s headstrong wife Golde. Coloff is particularly appealing in the loving, temperamental rapport she establishes with Pulver beautifully highlighted in their poignant rendition of “Do You Love Me?”
Christine Zavakos (Tzeitel), Charity Farrell (Hodel), Ashley Campana (Chava), Abby E. Cates (Shprintze) and Hannah Sayer and Jordan Vandersluis (sharing the role of Bielke) are delightful as Tevye and Golde’s children. The sweet, gentle Zavakos, the radiant, vocally stunning Farrell and the intriguing, introverted Campana enjoyably join forces early in the tale for a fun, graceful “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” that typifies their close-knit sisterhood. This winning trio also has engaging partners in Drew Helton, Josh Kenney and Adam Brown, respectively. Helton, a recent Wright State University graduate possessing geeky charm and finding delicious nuances in the script as timid tailor Motel, notably delivers a bubbly, lyric-fueled “Miracle of Miracles” simultaneously warming the heart of Zavakos and the audience. Kenney, a real find as outspoken student Perchik, is fittingly intellectual and fiery while perfectly matched with Farrell. As Fyedka, Brown’s charisma and skillful dancing is a joy.

Colorfully authentic, fully realized performances are also given by Caitlin Larsen (Yente/Grandma Tzeitel), Saul Caplan (Lazar Wolf), K.L. Storer (Rabbi), Matty Rickard (Mendel), Ryan Heinrich (Mordcha), Eric Byrd (Vanya), Joshua Silver Hughes (Yussel), Adam Lendermon (Sasha), Jeff Sams (Constable), and Linda June Snyder (Shaindel). Larsen’s comedic expertise, Caplan’s joviality, Sams’ cool, imposing demeanor, and Rickard, Byrd, Hughes and Lendermon’s splendid execution of the iconic “Bottle Dance” (one of many crisp, spirited routines marvelously reproduced by Chris Crowthers from Jerome Robbins’ original choreography) are noteworthy.
The production’s superb ambience is heightened by Dick Block’s strikingly detailed set evoking religion, John Rensel’s proficient lighting expertly marking shifts in tone, Tony Ray Hicks’ attractive costumes (originally designed for a 2009 “Fiddler” national tour starring Topol), Nathan D. Dean’s first-rate sound design (“Tevye’s Dream,” featuring Campana as the eerie Fruma-Sarah, is a spooky delight), and music director/guitarist Jay Brunner’s (Nachum) terrific klezmer band (particularly giving Farrell’s gorgeous rendition of “Far From the Home I Love” a tender acoustic flair) featuring Brent Eresman (Seth/clarinet), Joel Greenberg (Zev/mandolin), and brilliant, expressive violinist George Abud (Fiddler). Janet Yates Vogt provides vocal music direction.

It’s no surprise “Fiddler” has endured for generations. The Human Race keeps the musical’s tuneful, meaningful legacy alive with stripped down potency accenting the fact that it’s never too late to reexamine a classic.

The Skinny: An “unauthorized parody,” the play imagines characters from the popular comic strip Peanuts as teenagers. Drug use, suicide, eating disorders, teen violence, rebellion, sexual relations and identity are among the issues covered in this drama. Not for the younger set, as this is produced by BCT’s more-adult “Edge Of The Creek” season.

The Skinny: This beloved Rogers & Hammerstein classic tells the story of the denizens of the Oklahoma territory, just as it is poised on the cusp of statehood. You know it, you love it. It’s a guaranteed good time in the theatre.

The Skinny: The sweet transvestite and his motley crew will take the stage in an entirely new way and for the first time ever at the NCR Renaissance Auditorium. A much different take on this classic, yet campy musical this deliberately kitschy rock ‘n’ roll sci-fi Gothic is more fun than ever and let’s face it…it’s going to be done like ONLY Zoot can do! Caution: adult themes and strong language are used. Recommended for those ages 16 and up.

The Skinny: Based on the short stories of Sholem Aleichem, Fiddler is the tale of Tevye the milkman and his family. The shtetl of Anatevka seems safe and peaceful, but the sweeping changes facing Russia in 1905 bring strife and worry even to its smallest pockets. Fiddler juxtaposes the large changes rocking the world with the intimate, beautiful and sometimes heart-breaking changes that can rock a family.
