August 2, 2023 By Dawn Roth Smith

With all of the community theaters in town we thought we would spotlight their upcoming seasons. This will give you plenty of time to fill your calendars and purchase season tickets. This week I am happy to spotlight Brookville Community Theatre and Troy Civic Theatre.

Brookville Community Theatre located at 770 Arlington Rd Brookville, OH 45309 is at the end of their 38th Season. You can see this comedy November 9-19, 2023.  Tickets for all shows at Brookville Community Theatre can be purchased here:  https://thebct.org/

Troy Civic Theatre, which has been producing shows at The Barn in the park since 1965 will open their 2023-2024 Season with I Hate Hamlet by Paul Rudnick and is to be directed by Erin Gibbons. Performances run September 15-24.

November 10-19,  you can see Lysistrata by Aristophanes, directed by Derek Dunavent. Continuing into 2024, Troy will produce Moon Over the Brewery by Bruce Graham which will be directed by Steve Dietrich. Performances: March 1-10, 2024

Wrapping up their season, Derek Dunavent will direct Godspell by John-Michael Tebelak, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.  Based on the Gospel of Matthew, Godspell features an eclectic group of people who team up with Jesus to teach his lessons in a new day and time.  Performances of this fan favorite musical will be May 3-12, 2024. You can get tickets for the season at https://troycivictheatre.com.

Thank you to all of the Theatres for helping me with information to put this series together. There are many great options for everyone in 2023-2024. I hope you visit some of these theaters and are amazed by the wonder that is Community Theatre.

Calling All Actors

January 3, 2018 By Lisa Grigsby

If your New Years resolution had to do with appearing onstage in a community theater production, this is a great month to work on that. The Miami Valley is lucky to host numerous theaters companies around town and one of these roles just might be hand picked and waiting for you!  The following seven shows are holding auditions this winter for upcoming shows:

Auditions for Almost, Maine

Lebanon Theatre Company

January 7 & * @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Casting note: Almost, Maine was written with the intent to allow doubling, and can be performed by as few as 4 actors (2 Male, 2 Female). However, the playwright encourages flexibility in the ensemble, and the play can be performed by as many as 19 actors (10 Male, 9 Female). More information on the play can be found here.

Open Auditions for The Other Place

Dayton Theatre Guild

January 22 & 23 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Auditions for A Few Good Men

Dayton Playhouse

January 22 & 23 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Dayton Playhouse is excited to announce auditions for the riveting, military drama A Few Good Men. Before Aaron Sorkin created The West Wing, Sports Night, and The Social Network, he took Broadway by storm with his compelling story of honor vs. justice. Auditions will be Monday and Tuesday, January 22-23, 2018 at 7 PM at Dayton Playhouse. Performance dates are March 9-18, 2018. This production will be open to non-traditional racial casting for all parts, but will be adhering to the script for gender casting.

A Streetcar Named Desire Auditions

February 5 & 6 @ 7:00 pm

A tragic and effective drama which is one of the great classics of American theatre, reveals to the very depths the character of Blanche du Bois, a woman whose life has been undermined by her romantic illusions, which lead her to reject—so far as possible—the realities of life with which she is faced and which she consistently ignores. The pressure brought to bear upon her by her sister, with whom she goes to live in New Orleans, intensified by the earthy and extremely “normal” young husband of the latter, leads to a revelation of her tragic self-delusion and, in the end, to madness.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrel Auditions

Brookville Community Theatre
February 27 & 28 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Lawrence Jameson makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. Freddy Benson more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother’s failing health. After meeting on a train, they attempt to work together, only to find that this small French town isn’t big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target, heiress, Christine Colgate, wins, and the other must leave town. A battle of cons ensues that will keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end!

Coming Up in Dayton Theatre: 02/24 – 03/09

February 25, 2011 By Dayton937 1 Comment

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 24 – WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9, 2011

“it can be interesting to see if other people – like dead people who wrote books – agree or disagree with what you think… because it makes you – a larger part of the human community.” – Eurydice

I’m currently in the midst of rehearsing to play Eurydice in Sarah Ruhl’s beautiful play of the same title. When asked why she loves books, Eurydice says, “It can be interesting to see if other people – like dead people who wrote books – agree or disagree with what you think… because it makes you – a larger part of the human community.”

Theatre, I believe, does the same. We sit in performance spaces surrounded by other audience members, and all experience a show slightly differently; we perform on stages in front of any number of people, but only focus on the ones in the world of the play; we talk about plays and glance at reviews and comment on upcoming events.

I impulsively went to Chicago this past weekend to see two plays, and was reminded of these concepts as I spent some time in the audience. Seeing shows does bring us closer as human beings, whether with the two people we came with or the 212 in the audience, and that can be incredibly moving. So, these next two weeks, take someone you know to come see one of these shows, and enjoy being a part of that community.

DAYTON THEATRE GUILD

The Story: From the moment they meet, Tom finds Helen witty and charming, and they quickly fall in love. She happens to be quite plus-sized; Tom claims not to mind, but the people around him do. In this daring and provocative play, one of famed and cruelly witty Neil LaBute’s best, we explore societal treatment of the unfit, our despisal in others of what we fear in ourselves, and the ever-relevant question of whether size really matters or not.

The Story: In this behind-the-scenes comedy about an amateur theatre group, novice director Gerry Dunbar deals with a diva actress (supported by her doting husband) and their play’s haughty author (with a plethora of rewrites), rounded out by a cranky stage manager and technician. This riotous comedy exemplifies only too well the old theatre adage – “If it can go wrong… it will.”

ETC: Cait Doyle

ETC: Cait Doyle's Hot Mess in Manhattan

Thursday, February 10 – Wednesday, February 23

Renowned dancer Twyla Tharp observed that the arts are the only way one can run away without leaving home, and the shows in the greater Miami Valley area these next two weeks reflect that concept well. While there are a couple of deeper shows, there are quite a few comedies and musicals, which range across a spectrum from the witty Twelfth Night to humorous Hello, Dolly! One thing all of these shows have in common, however, is the ability to remove us from the stresses of our daily lives. This is also true of the deeper plays – like Fat Pig – which can provide escape while concurrently challenging us to consider social issues. This can be just an effective a tool for kids busy with school, so be sure to check out the children’s auditions while you’re at it. For those two or two and a half hours, you can step away from whatever occupies your thoughts, relax, and just enjoy a show… “running away” to take a breath, reenergize, and just laugh.

This riotous comedy exemplifies only too well the old theatre adage – “If it can go wrong… it will.”

Performances: May 6 – 22, 2011
The Story: “Right from the start, Billy, Beaky, Downy and Fluff start flapping and squawking over their freshly-hatched brother duck. He just doesn’t seem right. His feet are way too big, he’s a lousy quacker and, well, he looks downright ugly! Even his parents are embarrassed to show him to the rest of the barnyard. Feeling miserable and alone, “Ugly” leaves home and begins a dangerous journey that will take him to a place where he, too, can be beautiful.” (THT)
Directed by Brittany Hayden-Hinkle
