4 Course Campfire Inspired Beer Dinner At Lily’s

October 3, 2017 By Dayton Most Metro

On Thursday, October 12 Lily’s Bistro is hosting Rhinegeist Brewery for a special Fall Campout 4-course pairing meal, lead by “Camp Counselors” James Burton of Lily’s Bistro and Trevor Sutherland of Rhinegeist Brewery.

“Our Sous Chef James has worked in kitchens before with Trevor, who now represents Rhinegeist in the Dayton area,” Emily Mendenhall, owners of Lily’s Bistro said. “This Campout idea came about because we wanted to celebrate the late fall weather in a fun way, hopefully outdoors on the patio.”

The Fall Campout will take place on the back garden patio with a backup plan of hosting it in the “mess hall” (bar area) if fall weather doesn’t accommodate.

“We want it to be a whole evening thing,” Mendenhall said. “We’ll have the fire pit going out back with marshmallows to roast over the fire and Kyleen Downes playing some singalong songs. So stick around, tell ghost stories and enjoy jacket weather and the warmth of a fire!”

The Fall Campout’s menu includes…

Arrival
– Welcome cocktail with Rhinegeist Bubbles and “trail mix” of spicy seasoned mixed nuts and dry cured salami.

1st course – paired with Peach Dodo
– Oyster on the 1/2 shell topped with a pickled red onion and micro radish “salad” dressed with fresh lemon juice.

2nd course – paired with Franz Oktoberfest
– Bibb & radicchio salad with a roasted pumpkin/octoberfest apple cider vinaigrette topped with gorgonzola and pepitas

3rd course – paired with Truth IPA
– Braised pork belly on a bed of creamy butternut squash polenta, topped with a au jus sauce served with lightly butter sautéed lollipop kale.

4th course – paired with Penguin Blonde Stout
– Gingerbread spiced pound cake with a warm fig reduction and garnished with pecan brittle.

For those interested in attending the Fall Camp Out, the event costs $39 and takes place at Lily’s Bistro on Thursday, October 12 at 5:30pm. Tickets are available online.

Amber Rose Announces Craft Beer Dinner

February 4, 2015 By Lisa Grigsby

Make plans now to head out to Old North Dayton for a four course craft beer dinner, which kicks off a year long celebration of Amber Rose’s 25th anniversary.   Originally built in 1910 by Sigmund Ksiezopolski, it ran as a general store and deli named Sig’s up until the 1980′s.  The family ran the general store downstairs and resided upstairs as their family quarters.  The National Guard stayed with the family during the Great Flood of 1913.  In 1989 Elinor Sluzas acquired the building with the intention of opening a restaurant.  Before the scheduled grand opening there was a horrific fire and a portion of the building had to be rebuilt.  The restaurant officially opened for business in 1990.  Elinor may have retired but her recipes have stayed the same.

On Thursday, February 26th at 6:30pm Amber Rose will host a tasting for beer and foodie fans in their upstairs dining room.   Owner Joe Castellano shared the pairing menu with us:

March 20, 2011 By Lisa Grigsby 1 Comment

Reservations are now being accepted for a unique dining event at Savona Restaurant and Wine Bar to be held on Thurs, March 24th starting at 6:30pm,  featuring beers from the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company from Chico, California.  Chef Trevor Sutherland has paired each beer with each of the 4 food courses.  Menu is as follows:

Served with: Kellerweis-one of the only American Hefeweizens made using the traditional Bavarian style of open fermentation.
2nd course: Braised pork belly/ hydro Bibb lettuce / horseradish pale ale vinaigrette
Served with: Pale Ale – “the flagship beer, the one that made Chico famous. It is a flawless beer that opens with bright, perky high notes of maltiness and orange blossom and segues into a delectable hoppiness.”– Elaine Louie, Premier Beer—A Guide to America’s Best Bottled Microbrews
3rd course: Grilled pork chop/ fried white cheddar polenta/braised greens/tarragon mustard sauce
Served with: Torpedo IPA-a big American IPA; bold, assertive, and full of flavor highlighting the complex citrus, pine, and herbal character of whole-cone American hops.
4th course: Gateau Saint-Honoré Nouvelle w/ chocolate/ cherries
Served with: Bigfoot Barleywine 2011-  robust malts take over and notes of brandied cherries, dates, cocoa, leaf tobacco, and caramel come to the fore.

East vs West Beer Dinner

March 10, 2011 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

When you talk about an East Coast/ West Coast rivalry  coming to The Farifield Commons Mall, most people will be thinking about rap music.  But beer brewers are just as competitive about their products. Restaurateur Glen Brailey will host a dinner that brings the feud to his Beavercreek eatery on Tueday, March 15th at 7pm.  Guests will be able to sample and choose sides between New Hampshire’s Smutty Nose Brewing or California’s 21st Amendment Brewing.  Guests will need to make advance reservations by calling Spinoza at 937.426.7799.  Your ticket to the feud will run you $26.95  plus tax & gratuity.

Here’s the menu for the event:

WELCOME

Smuttynose Maibock (draft)

(Big Beer Series) Style: Maibock / Hellesbock ABV: 7.7%

Maibocks are a traditional Teutonic seasonal specialty. The Smuttynose version is brewed to be hugely malty and subtly finished with a variety of continental hops and an eye-pleasing russet brown color.  This particular keg has been cellered since May, 2009.  How will it taste?  We’ll see…

Paired with

Baked Wild Boar “Pockets” with Aged Gruyere and Tarragon Aioli

SALAD

21st Amendment Bitter American (can)

Style: American Pale Ale ABV: 4.7%

Like our founding fathers, arguing over a few pints of ale, this seasonal session ale provides the perfect forum to air all your grievances. This extra pale ale has lower alcohol but all the flavor and hop aroma you expect from a much bigger beer.

Paired with

Japanese Salad of Artisan Lettuce Mix, Wasabi Peas, and Ponzu Ginger Dressing

PIZZA FIRST COURSE

Smuttynose Finest Kind (draft)

Style: East Coast IPA ABV: 6.2%

The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze.  At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find.

Paired with

Sopressata Pizza with crushed San Marzano Tomatoes, Mediterranean Sea Salt, Garlic-infused Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Fresh “Fior di Latte” Mozzarella, Peppered Salami, and Fresh Basil on a thin crust

INTERMEZZO CHEESE COURSE

21st Amendment Monk’s Blood (draft)

Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale ABV: 8.3%

Paired with

French Morbier Cheese & Snofrisk Norwegian Mountain Semi-Hard Goat Cheese

PIZZA SECOND COURSE

21st Amendment IPA (draft)

Style: West Coast IPA ABV:

Deep golden color. Citrus and piney hop aromas. Assertive malt backbone supporting the overwhelming bitterness. Dry hopped in the fermenter with four types of hops giving an explosive hop aroma. With an IBU of 70, many refer to this IPA as Nectar of the Gods. Judge for yourself.

Paired with

Spanish Chicken Pizza with Spinoza’s Original Crust, Smoked Chicken, Chorizo Sausage, Sauteed Red Onions and Mozzarella on a base of Sundried Tomato Tapenade

DESSERT

Smuttynose Wheat Wine

Style: Wheat Wine ABV: 10.7%

A recently created American style, wheat wine, as its name implies, is a strong ale made with a substantial measure of malted wheat as well as barley. Close cousin to barley wines, wheat wines are typically strong, full bodied, deep gold to amber in color and feature a subtle soft tangy flavor derived from their wheat malt.

Paired with

Zeppoli  – “Italian Doughnuts” served warm with powdered sugar

Spinoza’s Craft Beer Dinner Showcases Pennsylvania Brewer

September 26, 2010 By Lisa Grigsby Leave a Comment

Victory Brewing Company  was founded in 1996 and has quickly established itself as a brewhouse that has successfully produced a huge variety of  distinctly flavored beers. Not familiar with Victory?  Here’s your chance for a great introduction, on Tues, Sept 28th at 7pm as Spinoza’s  in the Fairfield Commons Mall hosts a beer dinner with representatives from the renowned Victory Brewing Company on hand to talk about craft brewing and the unique style of their beers.

This is a reservation-only event and will no doubt sell out quickly. Please call Spinoza’s at  937-426-7799 for reservations and information. Cost is only $26.95 per person plus tax & gratuity.  Bellow is the menu and beer pairings:

Welcome Beer:  Prima Pilsner (draft)  Style German Pilsner ABV: 5.3%

Heaps of hops give this pale lager a bracing, herbal bite over layers of soft and smooth malt flavor. This refreshing combination of tastes makes Prima a classy quencher in the tradition of the great pilsners of Europe.

Paired with Pizza “sushi” rolls with Citron Vodka Smoked Salmon, Cream cheese, and Mango Wasabi Coulis

APPETIZER:  Golden Monkey Ale Style: Tripel ABV: 9.5%

Strong and sensual, this golden, Belgian-style ale glows. The richness of German malts and Belgian yeast are tempered by a sparkling approach and overall light body. Abundant herbal, fruity notes make this one to savor.

Paired with San Marzano Creamy Tomato Soup with Fresh Baked Crostini

SALAD:  Hop Devil (draft)            Style: American IPA ABV: 6.7%

Menacingly delicious, with the powerful, aromatic punch of whole flower American hops backed up by rich, German malts. HopDevil Ale offers a roller coaster ride of flavor, coasting to a smooth finish that satisfies fully.

Paired with Toasted Curried Couscous and Chickpea Salad on a bed of hydroponic Bibb lettuce

INTERMEZZO TASTE:  Old Horizontal Style: Barleywine ABV: 11.0%

A luxurious, warming barleywine rich with aromatic hops and dark, candied fruit character that hides its epic strength masterfully.

Served with Danish Blue & authentic English Farmhouse Cheddar Cheese

ENTRÉE:  Hop Wallop Style: Double IPA ABV: 8.5%

We celebrate the pioneering spirit of old Horace ‘Hop’ Wallop and those who dare mighty adventurous things in this vivid, robust ale. As our annual homage to the hop harvest, expect loads of aromatic splendor and bitter beauty.

Paired with Fresh Ground Free Range Buffalo Stromboli with Ricotta Cheese, Sun Dried Tomato Pesto, Gruyere Cheese, Ripe California Olives and Hop Wallop-Roasted Corn Aioli

DESSERT:  Storm King (draft) Style: Russian Imperial Stout ABV: 9.1%

With a huge, Pacific Northwest hop aroma & character upfront, Storm King subsides into massive, roast malt complexity. Rich and substantial, it will warm your heart.

Paired with Duo of Dark Chocolate and Espresso Mousse served in a French Chocolate Cup
