Nic Meade, a bartender at Fifth Street Brewpub has been chosen to participate in the Bar Boss competition! It’s a search for the bartender with the biggest personality, most loyal customer base, and of course — who makes the best drink. Bartender Magazine will hand-select one “Master Mixologist” to be featured based on a custom recipe and photo presentation. One bartender will be chosen by the public to win $10k and be featured on the cover of Bartender Magazine as the 2023 Bar Boss. And Nic needs your vote to win this competition- he’s currently in 7th place. Your first vote online each day is free.

What is your favorite thing about being a bartender?The people. Working a local neighborhood bar, I get to see a lot of the same faces every week. Build relationships with those people, and build community.

Fifth Street Brewpub Turns Eight

Hard to believe that the Fifth Street Brewpub is celebrating their 8th birthday this week!

In 2010, a group of 34 St. Anne’s Hill residents invested to restore the local landmark at 1600 E. Fifth Street. The initial plan was to fix and sell the building to a business, but post-renovation, the building sat empty. The group realized that if they wanted a business in the building, they’d have to build one themselves. After a meeting with Jeff Black, brewer and a founding member of Austin, Texas’ Black Star Co-Op—America’s first cooperatively owned brewery—the St. Anne’s Hill neighbors decided to emulate Black Star’s model. It’s Ohio’s only co-op brewery and boasts thousand of owners.

With so many owners, a board of Directors is elected and they work hand in hand with General Manager Tanya Brock, who handles the day to day operations and works with brewmaster Darren Link to run the seven barrel brewhouse. And together they invite the community to come celebrate the brewpubs 8th birthday.

According to Brock, “while the celebration will look a bit different this year, we felt it was important to continue to have one. We were built by a community, saved in these recent times by the community, and continue to serve a community of close-knit neighbors, craft beer and food lovers, and friends. This week we invite that community to smile, drink, and share love whether here with us or virtually.

“By stretching the party over the course of the week we hope it allows everyone to participate and raise a toast in a comfortable, safe way,” says Brock

3 Dayton Breweries Medal at U.S. Open Beer Championships

Breweries from South Carolina to South Korea sent in more than 6,300 beers representing more than 110 different styles for the 2018 U.S. Open Beer Championship. The competition is the only one to include beers from professional breweries and award-winning home-brewers, with judges from England, Canada and the United States.

Judging in the U.S. Open Beer Championships is blind; the judges know only the categories(117 categories were judged at this year’s U.S. Open), but they do not know what beers they are tasting. The final round of judging was held at the Quarter Barrel Brewery & Pub in Oxford, Ohio.

“This competition is significant because it accepts entries from breweries around the world and allows national winning homebrews to compete,” said Dow Scoggins, director of the U.S. Open Beer Championships. “Also, two college breweries took home medals at the U.S. Open. Niagara College won 2 golds and American Harvest Brewpub at Schoolcraft College brought home a gold and silver medal.”

Fifth Street Brewpub launches new Logo

This week Fifth Street Brewpub is showing off it’s new brand.

They have adopted a new look with a new logo. After five years they figured it was time to refresh their branding image to remind the community of who they are and what they believe in while also reaching out to new audiences.

Working with Sharpe Creative they developed a logo that helps depict their long-ago adopted motto of “Building a Community, One Beer at a Time.” The logo is comprised of a hand with barley nestled in the palm. From friendly handshakes, to our hand-crafted beer and food, to the many hands that comprise this astoundingly strong co-op, and to the helping hand we lend the community though our charity events, the hand is a symbol of who we are, what we do, and how we connect. And the barley? Well, it is tough to be a brewpub without brewing great beer.

Brewmaster Darren Link turns out beers from the familiar to the unique. He is a master of the craft on his own as well as when partnering with local homebrew winners. Mint Cookie Stout, one of our most well-known beers- is an example of such a partnership with local Jim Witmer. Primarily delicious brews like this are only poured in the brewpub and through limited draft distribution. However, this week they are offering a new brew in bottles. Fifth Date, a stout brewed with lactose, fermented with cherry, and conditioned with chocolate, will be available in bottles beginning 4pm on Thursday, February 8th. 22oz bottles of the 6.5% ABV brew will be for sale in the brewpub and select regional bottle shops. This release makes the beer perfect for getting cozy and sharing the love this Valentine’s Day.

Additionally, to pair with this new beer they’ve crafted a new food menu. In following their brewpub fare tradition, this menu offers, as Chef Molly Parks puts it, “a take on familiar pub food with a comfortable, modern twist.” To be frank, it is simply a collection of food we love to eat while drinking beer. Top sellers such as the Salmon B.E.L.T., Henry Street Chips, Turkey Avo, and our Ohio-raised beef burgers are joined by 24 new menu items. We listened to the community as they shared with us their favorites, their wish for more selection, and their dietary needs. They are doing a soft launch of the menu beginning Tuesday, February 6th and then an official launch on Friday, February 9th.

Started in 2012 by the passion of 32 community members, a once rundown former bar was crafted into a neighborhood brewpub supported by a community of over 3,200 member/ owners. Nestled in St. Anne’s Hill Historic neighborhood among Victorian houses and small businesses, we are a neighborhood pub with a great big heart for giving back while quenching thirsts and filling appetites. . On Sunday, September 17th from 7-9pm Fifth Street Brewpub is hosting a very special member only dinner!

Inspired by the flavors of fresh hops, Little Miami Farms will be there to share insights into the world of local hop farming. Brewmaster Darren Link will share his secrets for incorporating the fresh-from-the-bine flowers in his brew. And, of course, there will be beer. Each ticket includes two pints of fresh-hopped FSB brew. At least one person in a party must be an FSB member; all attendees must be 21 or older.

Not a member? $125 will get you a lifetime membership and then you can attend! Other membership perks include:

3rd Course- JoJo’s Stout chocolate lava cake topped with a citrus beer sauce

10 ?’s with Fifth Street Brewpubs Chef Brandon Travis

Chef Brandon Travis has over 2700 owner/bosses, at the Fifth Street Brewpub. more than 11 years of food service experience. During that time, he worked in nearly every kitchen station and position, which allowed him to learn how to effectively run a kitchen to provide the highest quality of fare to customers. Chef Brandon specializes in obtaining the highest quality products available and focuses on responsible and sustainable sourcing. He strives to use locally grown and produced products in everything he creates. Chef Brandon attended Sinclair Community College’s culinary arts and hospitality management program. He’s worked at Fifth Street Brewpub since they first introduced their kitchen.

Just last week Chef Brandon introduced a new menu for the brewpub, which includes discounted prices for members and a Monday – Friday, 4 – 6 PM happy hour for all that offers $1 off drafts, and wine as well as all sharing plates, like the smoked salmon dip, Co-op Cheese curds, and the ever popular Henry Chips not have an option to add chicken, pork or braised beef. The entree menu includes a turkey avocado club, the best selling build your own burger, a vegan spinach wrap and 4 salads to choose from. Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday from 10am -2pm with breakfast classics like french toast, steak and eggs and some specialty items like chicken and waffles and the over the top banana foster waffle. Fifth Street Brewpub Brings Back The Drink Up Dayton Challenge

Earn your Drink Up Ohio t-shirt by drinking just 18 beers at the brewpub. Eight FSB Beers & one from each of the ten local participating breweries…you’ve got the whole month of January to do it!

How to play ~ First ask your server for an official Drink Up Dayton Playing Card. With each beer you drink in January, your server will “stamp it”. Then return your completed card with 18 beers stamped to FSB no later than January 31st and qualify to receive your Drink Up Dayton t-shirt. Guess Who’s Shuffling Into Fifth Street Brewpub?

Former Cincinnati Bengals’ Ickey Woods will be a guest bartender at the St. Anne’s Hill brewery on Monday, September 21 starting at 6 pm. He’ll be pouring a wide range of Cincinnati Beers on tap and Fifth Street Brewpub will have the #44 Cold Cut Combo as the dinner special! Ickey Woods is raising donations for the Jovante Woods Foundation. The event is open to the public.

In addition to Ickey Woods’ fundraiser, patrons will be able to enjoy everything the brewpub has to offer including twelve great craft beers on tap, a wide selection of red and white wine, mixed drinks and FSB signature pub food.

This Thursday, August 6th, our good friends at Deschutes Brewery and Bill’s Donuts will be working together for a one-of-a-kind debut of both beer and donut! Fifth Street Brewpub is excited to announce the EXCLUSIVE DEBUT of Pinedrops IPA on tap (first in Dayton), Pineapple Pinedrops IPA on tap (infused through delicious pineapple right at the bar), and Beer Donuts with Pineapple Pinedrops frosting made by Dayton’s very own Bill’s Donuts! Deschutes will be bringing additional beers from their amazing brewery as well.

A flight of three Deschutes beers will be $6.

Fifth Street Brewpub (FSB), the only co-operatively owned brewpub in Dayton, and the fastest growing one in the nation, announced today they will be celebrating their 3rd birthday on June 19, 20 and 21 with a weekend birthday bash. The event is open to the public and there will be something for everyone, so all are invited to join in the fun.

Dayton Most Metro, Dayton Dining and Food Adventures are partnering with the brew pub for this special night, benefiting the House of Bread. The House of Bread is a community kitchen that serves meals 7 days a week to local residents in need.

Our resident foodies, The Food Adventures Crew will be guest bartenders. Chef House, Hungry Jax and The Big Ragu will be pouring from the 12 draft choices all night and earning your tips for the charity. (Bottled beer, soft drinks, wine and liquor available too).

The event will also feature the unveiling of new menu items! A percentage of food sales will be donated to the House of Bread.

The Best of Show winner will work with Darren to scale the recipe for brewing in FSB’s Brewhouse. The winning member will also be invited to join Darren on brew day and assist with brewing the recipe. The beer will eventually be tapped and served at an exclusive FSB release party

The competition is open to any amateur homebrewer age 21 or older who is a member of Fifth Street Brewpub. All entries must be handcrafted products, containing ingredients available to the general public, and made using private equipment by hobbyist brewers. Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) judges will evaluate and score each entry. The average of the scores will determine the rank of each entry in its category. Each category will have at least one BJCP judge.

Style and Limitations

Due to the number of fermenters and Brite tanks and in the interest of keeping bacteria out of our brewery, please do not submit any barrel aged, wild ales (Brett, Lacto, or Pedio) or beers requiring extended aging. Only the following styles will be accepted. Refer to the BJCP style guidelines at

www.bjcp.org for a description of the beer styles.

Bottle Rules

Participating brewers can enter a maximum of two entries. Each entry will consist of two 12 to 22 ounce capped, corked, or swing top bottles that are void of all identifying information, including labels and embossing. Printed caps are allowed, but must be blacked out completely. 12oz brown glass bottles are preferred; however, green

and clear glass will be accepted. THE DEAD LINE FOR ENTERING IS MAY 2, 2015.

THE BEST OF SHOW AWARD!

Our Brewmaster, Darren Link, will work with the Best of Show winner to scale their homebrew recipe to be brewed in Fifth Street Brewpub’s

Brewhouse. The winner will also be invited to join Darren on brew day to brew the recipe. The beer will then have a release party scheduled at a later date. Fifth Street Brewpub reserves the right to choose the beer to brew from the Best of Show table based on recipe reproduction, system constraints, or financial reasons.
