Buffalo Soldiers: An Interview with Zachary Gabbard of Buffalo Killers

The Cincinnati-based rockers Buffalo Killers have been busy since the beginning of this year.

First, they helped kick off this year’s Dayton Music Festival 10th year anniversary with a special show featuring a church choir in the  Christ Episcopal Church in downtown Dayton back in April.  They followed that with a coast to coast summer tour, which was in  support of the release of Heavy Reverie, which was released in May.  During their time on the road, the made their annual stop in  Austin, Texas and performed at South by Southwest “This past year was probably the wildest one,” bassist and vocalist Zachary  Gabbard says during our phone conversation.  “A lot more people, taking every band from everywhere, bunch of people think that  they are rock stars, and throw them into one city.   It was nuts.”

Whatever they will admit or not-Zachary, along with his brother and guitarist/vocalist Andy, and drummer Joseph Sealy-they are  fast approaching their own unique rock star status through their growing library of hook heavy, homegrown rock.  The music encompasses the rawness of blues and psychedelic basics.  Buffalo Killers play loud and unrestrained, free with a beauty and ease.  The trio recently added lap steel/guitarist Sven Kahn’s into the band this year.  The guys of the band knew Kahn’s for some time, with him filling in from time to time during shows, and playing in some during the recordings of their album, 3.

Music was always around when Zachary and Andy Gabbard were growing up in their home.  Along with hearing the classic records spin from Neil Young, Grateful Dead, and CSNY-their father would play some strung the guitar with friends, and co-workers after work.  When Zachary decided that he wanted to pick up playing on his own, he was given a bass because his father said that “guitar players are a dime a dozen.”  Andy started to play guitar at a young age as well, playing with a small Fender with a small neck.  Along with being taught by their father, Andy particularly would play along AC/DC records.

The Gabbard brothers formed their garage rock band Thee Shams in 1999, along with Sebaali, Max Bender, and Keith Fox.  Thee Shams released four albums on four record labels, and toured extensively.  The toll of the touring and recording took a toll on the band, and the band broke up in 2005.  “It became where we were obviously the three guys (Zachary, Andy, and Sebaali) that were committed to this project,” Gabbard explained.  “Us three were ready to go-that’s all we wanted to do.  So when it started to slow down, we just say let’s start over.”

The newly formed trio of Buffalo Killers quickly picked up where their previous band left off.  They started to gain followers everywhere they went, and even caught the eye of the folks over at Alive Records.  The record label received the five-song demo that Zachary sent out to several other labels.  It took less than a week for Alive to call the band to sign them.  The first album under the label helped Buffalo Killers obtain the opportunity to go play a string of shows with The Black Crowes in 2007.  When they returned from touring with The Black Crowes, the band went to work on their second album, Let It Ride, with Black Keys guitarist/vocalist Dan Auerbach serving as producer.  With their time being under the Alive Records name, Buffalo Killers would go on to release three more albums: 3 (2011), Dig. Sow. Love. Grow. (2012), and the 2013 Record Store Day only release of Ohio Grass.

This past year, Buffalo Killers made the move over to Sun Pedal Records, and subdivision of Warner Bros.   The goal wasn’t to move on from Alive, because the band were happy being with them.  The people from Sun Pedal started showing up at the shows more.  Conversations began to become more and more frequent, to which the decision was made to make the move.  “Alive was super good to us,” Gabbard says.  “It just worked out.  They were into doing the record, and making it come out fast.  With them having distribution through Warner Bros., we all knew that the records could get out there more.  Alive were supportive, and helped us get the deal done with Sun Pedal.  It was good for everyone.”

While working on the direction and vision of producer Jim Wirt (Fiona Apple, Incubus), Heavy Reverie and their second release this year Fireball of Sulk have given Buffalo Killers a more cleaner sound while maintain their hard rocking ways and reducing the overdubs being used.  While both Gabbard brothers would rely on each other with the vocals, and self-produce most of the albums, working with Wirt also helped the band get out of their comfort zone.  “We were open to anything,” Gabbard says.  “Jim captured it well.”  The making of Fireball of Sulk was documented with a camera crew and photographers to release in relation with the record.  The filming included learning the songs to recording them, which allows their fans and others to take a peek into the process of making the album.

When it’s all said and done, 2014 will be remembered to being some kind of year for Buffalo Killers.  Under the Sun Pedal name, they have been getting more exposure, including being in a segment on Last Call with Carson Daly this summer when they on the West Coast.  “Ah man, that was a big deal for us,” Gabbard gleefully mentions.  “My kids think it’s the biggest thing in the world.”

The band also have a new place to practice, Zachary’s home in the country outside of Dayton and Cincinnati.  “We can get as loud as we want out there,” Gabbard says.

Something that bearded fellas of Buffalo Killers have no problem doing.

Buffalo Killers will be performing at Canal Public House in support of their latest album Fireball of Sulk with Good English and Tombstone Tremblers.  Friday November 28th.  Doors open at 7.  Show is at 10.  $10.00 Day of Show.

Buffalo Killers Kick Off DMF’s 10th Year Anniversary With Special Show

For the past nine years, the Dayton Music Fest has spotlighted the burgeoning music scene in Dayton, Ohio.  Founded by Dan Clayton, Andy Ingram, and Shawn Johnson, the Dayton Music Fest features artists and bands from all around the area over two days in several area establishments.  Within walking distance from each other, festival attendees are able to experience live, local music in ways that they never thought possible.  The event also allows people who don’t come down and watch live shows often the opportunity to witness the rich musical talent that is coming out of Dayton.

Now curated by Kyle Melton and Don Thrasher, the tenth anniversary of the Dayton Music Fest will undoubtedly be one of the best yet.  For starters, the DMF organizers, along with David C. Obenour and Ghettoblaster Magazine, will be having their kickoff event this Friday night at Christ Episcopal Church in downtown Dayton (20 West First Street).  The kickoff event will feature Dayton’s/Cincinnati’s own Buffalo Killers.

Lead by songwriting brothers Zachary and Andrew Gabbard, along with Joseph Sebaali and Sven Kahns, Buffalo Killers have drawn the attention of the likes of The Black Crowes’ own Chris Robinson and Dan Auerbach from the Black Keys.  Robinson enjoyed the band so much that he even invited the Buffalo Killers to open a string of dates.  The band’s previous albums, Buffalo Killers (2006), Let It Ride (2008), 3 (2011), Dig. Sow. Love. Grow. (2012), Ohio Grass (2013) present signature hook heavy homegrown rock n roll play with an undeniable Southern psychedelic tone.

Buffalo Killers have recently released their fifth studio album, Heavy Reverie this month via Sun Pedal Recordings.  Heavy Reverie was recorded in Cleveland, OH at Crushtone Studios with producer Jim Wirt (Incubus, Fiona Apple).  The show on Friday will feature a backing choir accompanying the band for select songs,  truly a once in a lifetime experience that fits perfectly into Dayton Music Fest’s vision each and every year.

Also on the night of the show, Toxic Brew Company will be releasing the limited edition Buffalo Killer Brown Ale.  The tapping will be at 5pm.

Downtown Dayton Revival Music Festival Band Spotlight – Volume I

On September 8th and 9th, Dayton will be participating in the first annual Downtown Dayton Revival, a festival that will celebrate music of all kinds.  With three stages planned to be set up, people that attend the festival will be enjoying chart-topping entertainers, up and coming talent, along with some artists and bands that have become classics over the years.

Buffalo Killers

One of the bands that will be taking the stage is the boys from Cincinnati, Buffalo Killers.  The trio consist of brothers Andrew (vocalist and guitarist) and Zachary Gabbard (bass guitarist), along with drummer Joseph Sebaali.  In 1999, Zach formed a garage rock band Thee Shams.  The band released four albums before disbanding.  In early 2006, Sebaali joined the brothers to form what the band is today.

Buffalo Killers have released four albums since their inception.  The first self-titled album was released in 2006.  The album was originally set to be a five-song demo that was going to be released independently.  However, the band received a call from Alive Records wanting the band sign with them.  The band agreed, and went to the studio and recorded an additional five songs.  The band quickly developed a following that included The Black Crowes lead singer, Chris Robinson.  Robinson loved the band so much he had the band open up for the The Black Crowes fall tour in 2007.  In 2008, Buffalo Killers released their second album, Let It Ride.  The album was produced by Black Keys guitarist/vocalist Dan Auerbach.  3, the band’s third album, was released in 2011.  And just recently, the band released Dig. Sow. Love. Grow.

Buffalo Killers’ undeniable sound is pouring with their influences from the music they grown up listening to-Neil Young, The Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones.  With their garage rock roots still embedded, they also have a Southern psychedelic sound with them.  Without question the minute you start to listen to the band’s music, you instantly become infatuated.

Burnt Sugar

Our second band that will be highlighted helms from the streets of New York.  In 1999, guitarist and writer Greg Tate wanted to start a band and experiment with playing music outside of the boundaries.  Burnt Sugar, as he named the band, started to dig into the libraries of great soul and funk legends Chaka Khan, Nina Simone, George Clinton and the P-funk All Stars, along with jazz musician Miles Davis, and big band great Duke Ellington.  As the band improvises while playing, Tate will direct them by doing conducting them.  The unusual 12 person mash-up themed band has seen over 40 musicians come and play.

Burnt Sugar has over 15 albums out, with their latest in 2011 All Ya Needs That Negrocity.  Each album highlights the bands distinctive sound of soul, jazz, funk, blues, rock, and reggae.  A perfect blend of styles soar through each album.

Rusted Root

 

90’s music is still widely popular throughout the United States.  Many consider the decade to be the best time for music ever.  One band that is still seeing fans come in hordes for their live shows, and will see their share of fans at the Downtown Revival is the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania band, Rusted Root.

Rusted Root released their first major-label album in 1994, When I Woke.  Now, in the 20th year as a band, the band have released 7 albums and sold over 3 million records worldwide.  In the fall of this year, Rusted Root plans on releasing their new album, tentatively titled Fortunate Freaks.  “Send Me On My Way” has become the band’s most popular song, both commercially and with fans.  Rusted Root’s blend of acoustic and rock, mixed with influences from the many musical styles of the world have given the band a following that many compare them to the likes of the Grateful Dead and Dave Matthews Band.  Having talked to some people that have seen Rusted Root perform live, I have been told that their jam sessions during their live shows is simply poetic.

 The Cliftones, Robert Randolph and the Family Band

The Cliftones will be generating some dancing with the crowd at the Downtown Revival.  The 10 piece Cincinnati-based band will be supplying the masses with rich reggae music.  On the band’s website, they declare that ‘the crowd always leaves their show a sweaty mess every time’.   If you are a fan of The Gladiators, The Congos, and of course the best reggae singer possibly of all time-Bob Marley, then you won’t be disappointed with The Cliftones performance.

If Rusted Root, and The Cliftones are not simply enough to satisfy your appetite for soul music, Robert Randolph and the Family Band are going to make sure that changes in a hurry.

Randolph was trained as a pedal steel guitarist in his church at the age of fifteen.  By the age of nineteen, he started to get interested in listening and watching guitar legend Stevie Ray Vaughan.  The influence of the way Vaughan played gave Randolph the fuel to evolve his way of playing the pedal steel.  The change caused people to take notice quickly.

Randolph and the Family Band started playing together around 2000.  They started like most bands do small venues and local watering holes.  Rapidly, the band started to sell out clubs.  The band has played with great musical talent.  Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, B.B. King are some of the people who have had the pleasure of performing with the band.

According to Randolph, the group’s sound is inspired by successful 70s funk bands such as Earth, Wind & Fire and Sly & the Family Stone.  The live shows are legendary.  Randolph is known to bust a moves while the band’s go into a jam session.  Crowd involvement is greatly encouraged.  Dayton-you have been put on notice.  You better be ready to get down, and dance the day and night away as the smooth soul and vibrate funk come out of the band during their performance.

Buffalo Killers Celebrating Dig Sow Love Grow, Looking Ahead to the Fall

A little over a year ago the Buffalo Killers were celebrating the release of their third full-length album, simply titled “3.” But the three piece band hasn’t let the last 12 months go by quietly. In addition to a steady schedule of touring, the Buffalo Killers spent some time at Candyland Studios in Cincinnati working with engineer Mike Montgomery on what would become their fourth full-length.

Dig Sow Love Grow was released nationally on Tuesday via Alive Records and is available at local record stores and digitally. The Buffalo Killers will celebrate the release locally with a show this Saturday (August 11th) at Canal Street Tavern. Joining them onstage is Goodbye, a new band featuring M Ross Perkins, Ian Kaplan, Nick Eddy and Chris Green.

Following Saturday’s show, the Buffalo Killers will begin touring in the support of the album. Your next local opportunity to see them live will be at the Downtown Dayton Revival Music Festival in September. The festival is two days and features 3 stages with over 30 bands including Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Rusted Root, Burnt Sugar and many more. The Buffalo Killers are scheduled to perform on Sunday, September 9th at 4:45pm on the Monster Stage.

GearFest Brings Music to the Great Outdoors

The great outdoors will get a little louder this weekend as the seventh annual GearFest sets up at Eastwood Metro Park.

The original vision for the festival was to create an event that brought the outdoor community together and showcased all the resources available in the area, said Tom Helbig, special events coordinator for Five Rivers MetroParks in his fifth year working on GearFest.

“The festival really offers something for everybody,” said Helbig. “There’s a lot of opportunity to get involved in the outdoor activities and competitions. But then, if you’re just going to check out the scene, there’s all the vendors, the beer garden and the music.”

“I’m very excited about the music line-up this year. We always try to match the type of music at the festival with the outdoor culture, so expect a folk/Americana/jam band vibe from the sound.”

GearFest was originally located at PNC 2nd Street Market, before moving to Eastwood Metro Park four years ago.

“Moving to Eastwood Metro Park gave us the ability to grow the event,” said Helbig

He said organizers hope to partner with a big name sponsor and eventually bring in a high profile, national act.

“The music is getting better each year,” said Helbig. “This is the best line-up the festival has had in my time coordinating it.”

Helbig said he is especially looking forward to the Buffalo Killers show Saturday at 6 p.m.

This is the first time the Buffalo Killers, a Cincinnati three-piece, have played GearFest, said Zach Gabbard, bassist and vocals.

The other band members are Gabbard’s younger brother Andrew on guitar and vocals and Joey Sebaali on drums.

Though this is their first time at GearFest, the band is no stranger to Dayton.

“In the last couple of years, we’ve been hitting Dayton pretty hard,” said Gabbard. “We were there a few weeks ago for the Dayton Music Festival.”

Gabbard said they have been playing the Dayton area more since they all recently moved north out of Cincinnati.

“Dayton is a very cool town,” said Gabbard. “It’s got a great music scene. People love coming out to see shows and have a good time.”

The Gabbard brothers write all their songs, have countless albums under their belts and are very comfortable playing with drummer Selaabi.

“We just put out a brand new album called ‘3’,” said Gabbard. “So we’ll definitely be playing a lot of that this Saturday.”

Even with the success of the Buffalo Killers- they opened for some Black Crowes shows in 2007 and Dan Auerbach of the The Black Keys produced their 2008 sophomore album “Let It Ride” – Gabbard still remains humble.

“I didn’t have any concept that I could ever make a living playing music,” Gabbard said. “Now, to play and perform for people is the best part of my day.”

He said seeing the success of bands like Guided by Voices, Brainiac and the Afghan Whigs was a great inspiration for him.

“We’re excited for GearFest,” said Gabbard. “Anything to get people outside.”

Buffalo Killers To Unveil New Songs on Kaleidoscope, Perform at Peach’s Grill

Tonight you can catch the Buffalo Killers live on the air on WYSO during Kaleidoscope.  They’re performing at Peach’s Grill in Yellow Springs on Friday, May 27th beginning at 10pm.  On tonight’s radio show, which begins at 8pm, the band will unveil some new songs from the album they’re releasing later this summer.  The local release party for “3,” is scheduled for Friday, July 15th at Canal Street Tavern.  The Buffalo Killers will be joined onstage by R.Ring, a collaboration between Kelley Deal and Mike Montgomery that recently did a month long residency at South Park Tavern.  You can hear a preview track from “3” by clicking here.
