Ralph Fiennes’ INVISIBLE WOMAN Opens Friday at THE NEON

January 29, 2014 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

the-invisible-woman-pstr02Hello Everyone,

It’s time to start moving along at THE NEON. If you still need to see AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, tomorrow (Thursday) will be its last day with us. The Coen Brothers’ INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS will stick around for another week, and on Friday we’ll open the new film directed by (and starring) Ralph Fiennes – THE INVISIBLE WOMAN. Remaining showtimes for this week can be found at www.neonmovies.com

Synopsis for THE INVISIBLE WOMAN: “Nelly (Felicity Jones), a happily-married mother and schoolteacher, is haunted by her past. Her memories, provoked by remorse and guilt, take us back in time to follow the story of her relationship with Charles Dickens (Ralph Fiennes) with whom she discovered an exciting but fragile complicity.” (Taken from Sony Pictures Classics) This lovely film, also starring NEON-favorite Kristin Scott Thomas, will delight our regulars who love period costume dramas…but it goes beyond that. Giving the film a 100% review, Scott Foundas of VARIETY wrote, “So tastefully mounted and brilliantly acted that it wears down even the corset-phobic’s innate resistance to such things.” Click on this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDMHb3GetIc’]

Fans of THE NEON have requested a special screening of a fantasy film called KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM (a films about Live Action Role Playing starring Peter Dinklage and Steve Zahn). They worked with Tugg to see if there was enough interest in screening the film in Dayton…and the required reservations crossed the threshold. This means that the screening will happen on Wednesday, February 5 at 8:30. To buy tickets in advance, visit this LINK. If any tickets remain, they will be sold at the door on the night of the screening.

“The Junior Leaguers Club of Dayton, an African American based organization, will hold a fundraiser with the film SANKOFA on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Noon. This film is about an African American model on a photo shoot in Africa who has an ancestral experience which transforms her life and consciousness. ‘Sankofa’ is an Akan word that means ‘we must go back and reclaim our past so that we can move forward.’ The profit from this event will fund scholarships to graduating seniors in the Miami Valley. Applications will be available at the event in case you know a worthy student to submit to the organization. Tickets may be purchased at the Neon for $30. (Student tickets are $15 each.) The price includes a movie ticket, popcorn, soda, and a glass of wine for adults.” (Taken from press notes.)

Thanks for your continued support.
Mark your calendars for our annual Oscar Party – March 2! More details coming soon.
We hope to see many of you this weekend!

2 Hits Led To THE NEON’s Best Weekend Ever!

January 15, 2014 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

7rp49wcHello Everyone,

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!  We just had our best weekend ever!!

AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY performed wonderfully – with several sold-out screenings over the weekend. INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS also did quite well. I’m pretty certain that both films will stick around for a couple more weeks…but we do have other exciting films down the road.

It’s interesting to note that even though we had our best weekend ever, neither film could take the prize for “Best Opening Weekend.” That title still belongs to FAHRENHEIT 9/11 (with MOONRISE KINGDOM close behind).

Click this LINK to visit the official site for AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY.  Click this LINK to visit the official site for INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS.

VYG is sponsored by Peace on Fifth and newest friend the Zonta Club of Dayton – an organization advocating for the status of women worldwide. Amanda Arrington from the East End Community Center will lead discussion after the film. Learn what is happening locally and how you can get involved. Ticket prices help keep this film series going. A program of Peace on Fifth fully supported by the community. The screening is scheduled for January 23 at 7:30, and tickets are just $8 – available exclusively at THE NEON. RISING FROM THE ASHES, the award-winning feature-length documentary about Team Rwanda, will premiere at THE NEON on Monday, January 27 at 7:30 p.m. The event is presented by Garry Harrington & sponsored by Five Rivers MetroParks. “RISING FROM THE ASHES is a joyous and uplifting independent film about the development of a national cycling team in Rwanda, a country still affected deeply by the genocide that tore the East African nation apart in 1994…The documentary tells a story of redemption, hope and second chances. It is not about the bike; however, the bicycle becomes a tool that has helped change a nation…Advance tickets are $11 and can be purchased online by clicking this LINK. Remaining tickets at the door will be $15…For more information about the film, go to www.risingfromashesthemovie.com.” (press notes provided by Garry Harrington) Advanced tickets for this event are only available on-line.

BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR Opens at THE NEON!

January 2, 2014 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Blue-is-The-Warmest-Color-Poster-HD-WallpaperHello Everyone,

Snowy out? No worries! THE NEON is open!!

Word of mouth continues to be amazing for PHILOMENA. In fact, both PHILOMENA and NEBRASKA saw spikes in attendance over the weekend. That said, we still want to move forward with BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR before we get busy with 2 huge titles on January 10. If you want to see any of these three films, you’ll only have until January 9.

Synopsis for BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR: “The sensation of the Cannes Film Festival and the most controversial film of the year, BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR made cinema history as the first film ever awarded the Palme d’Or to both its director and its actresses. In a star-making role, Adèle Exarchopoulos is Adèle, a passionate young woman who has a yearning she doesn’t quite understand until a chance encounter with the blue-haired Emma ignites a flame and brings her to life. Léa Seydoux (Midnight in Paris) gives a fearless performance as Emma, the older woman who excites Adèle’s desire and becomes the love of her life. Abdellatif Kechiche’s intimate epic of tenderness and passion charts their relationship over the course of several years, from the ecstasy of a first kiss to the agony of heartbreak. Pulsing with gestures, embraces, furtive exchanges, and arias of joy and devastation, BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR is a profoundly moving hymn to both love and life.” (IFC Films) Click this LINK to visit the official site. Because this film is rated NC-17 for explicit sexual content, patrons must be 18 or over for admission.

Next Friday (Jan. 10), we are slated to open 2 highly anticipated films – INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS (the new film from The Coen Brothers) and AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY (starring Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and numerous other incredible actors). We think it will be a pretty amazing weekend.

“VERY YOUNG GIRLS is Start Freedom Dayton’s first film of 2014. VYG takes a look at human trafficking from the victims’ perspective and introduces us to Rachel Lloyd, the founder of NYC based GEMS – an organization dedicated to empowering victims to escape and live new lives. Some fans of THE NEON have requested a special screening of a fantasy film called KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM (a film about Live Action Role Playing starring Peter Dinklage and Steve Zahn). They’re working with Tugg in hopes of drumming up enough interest to make the screening happen. If 66 tickets are reserved by Jan. 22, then the screening will take place on Wednesday, February 5 at 8:30. Click HERE to watch a trailer for this film. To reserve a ticket, follow this LINK. Your card will only be charged if enough people reserve tickets and the event moves forward.

I’d like to thank you for your continued support of THE NEON. Early figures suggest that 2013 was THE NEON’s most successful year…and it’s your constant support that has helped make that happen.

Thank you so much!
Wishing you a Happy and Healthy New Year!

Jonathan

Big Date Changes – Coen Brothers Added to Upcoming NEON Engagements!

December 17, 2013 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

1486917_546885578734344_27096008_nHello Everyone,

Once again, big changes are happening to our upcoming release dates. It was determined yesterday (by “the powers that be”) that MANDELA won’t open after all at THE NEON. We’re quite disappointed by this, but the decision is out of our hands. That said, we’re glad that we will be able to open two smaller gems between now and our next big titles on January 10. On Dec. 27, we plan to open KILL YOUR DARLINGS – a story about the early life of poet Allen Ginsberg (a brave choice for actor Daniel Radcliffe of the HARRY POTTER films). On Jan. 3, we plan to open BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR – the French sensation that is garnering numerous awards and lots of attention around the world. Then on January 10 – a potentially huge day for us – we are slated to open AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY as well as the new Coen Brothers film (we’re delighted about this) – INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS.

This will more than likely be the final week for PHILOMENA – so hurry down if you still need to see this wonderful film (or if you need to see it again). NEBRASKA opened quite well this weekend, so we think it will stick around for a couple weeks. Click on either title above to visit that film’s official site. Both of these films are big contenders at this year’s Golden Globes!

This year’s Family Holiday Film Series is already coming to a close! Tickets are FREE for children 12 and under, and all other tickets are $2 each. The final film – the holiday classic WHITE CHRISTMAS – will only screen this Saturday at Noon. Tickets will be available starting 45 minutes before the show.

An additional encore screening of THE TRIUMPH has been set for Monday, December 23 at 7:30. The local, faith-based non-profit hosting this screening is delighted that the demand for these tickets is so high. “THE TRIUMPH is a powerful new documentary film about our Blessed Mother’s apparitions in Medjugorje. On June 25, 1981, in the mountain village of Medjugorje in Bosnia Herzegovina, Our Lady appeared to six children. She identified herself as the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, and continues to appear to several of the visionaries even today.” (taken from Lovey Dovey, Inc. press notes) $10 presale tickets will only available via this LINK from Love Dovey, Inc. Remaining tickets will be sold at THE NEON on the night of the screening.

“Peace on Fifth is at it again with their knockout film series START FREEDOM DAYTON. Save the date for January 23rd at 7:30, as Peace on Fifth is slated to screen a film about human trafficking. Zonta Club of Dayton is the sponsor for the first film of 2014 and a human trafficking professional will lead the after viewing discussion. Tickets will be $8 and will be available exclusively at THE NEON. Contact Peace on Fifth with questions at 937.367.7215 or at [email protected] The film title will be announced in January.” (Taken from Peace On Fifth press notes.)

Don’t forget that we sell gift certificates at our box office in $5 and $10 denominations. These are a perfect gift for the film lover in your life…or perhaps the person who still needs to discover what THE NEON has to offer.

Thanks for your continued support!

We hope to see you soon,

Jonathan

SLEEPWALK WITH ME at THE NEON + Big Benefit News!

October 9, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

Huge changes are just around the corner for THE NEON. Before I get to the source of my anxiety, let’s talk movies. If you still want to see THE MASTER, Thursday will be your last chance to see it with us. On Friday, we will open a film that has had the most requests this year – SLEEPWALK WITH ME. ARBITRAGE had a solid opening weekend…so it will stick around.

Synopsis for SLEEPWALK WITH ME: From the producers of THIS AMERICAN LIFE, this is the film that Ira Glass has been talking about! “When an aspiring stand-up fails to express his true feelings about his girlfriend and his stalled career, his anxiety comes out in increasingly funny and dangerous sleepwalking incidents.” (IFC Films)

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9tRN7bok4o’]

This weekend is the last chance to see movies via 35mm film at THE NEON. On Sunday evening, we will close our doors for 4 days as we make the transition to digital projection (the new industry standard). Our “Things To Do” list is jam-packed. Over the past 11 years, we’ve opened our doors for business every single day…while we’re closed, we’re going to take advantage of the opportunity and do some major cleaning, lay some new carpet and add some fresh paint to floors and walls.

And speaking of this weekend, Sunday marks the day for our big Digital Conversion Benefit featuring AMELIE. (If you missed Sunday’s nice article from Dayton Daily News, you can check it out here.) The festivities will start at 4:00 with delicious appetizers provided by Meadowlark, Roost and Coco’s Bistro. Around 5:00, everyone will head to the large auditorium for our “Dayton Meets Hollywood” auction (more details below) We’ll plan to begin our 35mm presentation of AMELIE by 5:30. Tickets are still available! 100% of the proceeds will go toward helping us make the switch to digital. They can be purchased at our box office or by visiting this link.

To check out all the items in our auction, we’ve listed each item (along with a picture below).  Here’s the skinny:

If you’re unable to attend the benefit but would like to place a bid on one of the auction items, you can send me an email with your name, phone number, and your highest bid. I will need this e-mail by Saturday at noon. send to: [email protected] (If you’d like to see one of the items in person, you can schedule an appointment with me for this Saturday.)

We hope to see you this weekend.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support!

All the best,
Jonathan

CAIRO TIME, A Coen Bros ReMake, and Lots More!

October 28, 2010 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone.

We’re moving things along at THE NEON.  If you still need to see NEVER LET ME GO or IT’S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY, you only have Thursday (10/28) to catch them with us (www.neonmovies.com).  On Friday, we start two new films – A WOMAN, A GUN AND A NOODLE SHOP – based BLOOD SIMPLE – a Coen Brothers film (which will only play for one week) and CAIRO TIME – starring one of my all-time favorites – Patricia Clarkson (which may only play for one week).

Synopsis for CAIRO TIME: “A married magazine editor falls for one of her husband’s old acquaintances while vacationing in Cairo in this romantic drama from writer/director Ruba Nadda. Juliette (Patricia Clarkson) is a magazine editor who is happily married to Mark (Tom McCamus), a Canadian diplomat. Their kids are all grown up, and they’ve planned a three-week vacation in Cairo together when Mark gets delayed in the Palestinian territories and Juliette is left to navigate the Egyptian capitol alone. In order to ensure his wife’s safety until he arrives, Mark asks his former security officer and longtime friend Tareq (Alexander Siddig) to be her guide though the city. He never imagined that they would fall in love, but the more time Tareq and Juliette spend together the more difficult is becomes for them to deny their intense attraction to one another.”  (Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide)

Synopsis for A WOMAN, A GUN AND A NOODLE SHOP: “Wang is a miserable yet cunning noodle shop owner in a desert town in China. Feeling neglected, Wang’s wife secretly goes out with Li, one of his employees. A timid man, Li reluctantly keeps the gun the landlady bought for ‘killing her husband later’. However, not a single move they make escapes the boss’s notice, and he decides to bribe patrol officer Zhang to kill the illicit couple. It looks like a perfect plan: the affair will come to a cruel but satisfying end… or so he thinks, but the equally wicked Zhang has an agenda of his own that will lead to even more violence.” (Sony Pictures Classics)
This film is based on BLOOD SIMPLE – a film by The Coen Brothers.  It was directed by Yimou Zhang – director of RAISE THE RED LANTERN, HERO and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS.

The Living City Film Fest continues next week with a rare 35mm print of a Peter Bogdanovich classic starring Jeff Bridges and Cybill Shepherd!  Here are the remaing films in the Jeff Bridges retrospective:
THE LAST PICTURE SHOW (sponsored by Chisano Marketing) – Nov. 1 at 7PM
THUNDERBOLT AND LIGHTFOOT (sponsored by Jeff Martin Florist) – Nov. 8 at 7PM
RANCHO DELUXE (sponsored by CityWide Development) – Nov. 15 at 7PM
Single tickets will be $8 each available before each show.

“REVELATION, the award-winning short film by writer/director Will Graver, will have its local premiere Saturday, Oct. 30, at 3:30. The majority of the film was shot on the campus of Wright State University last year and features local talent.  In the zombie-filled world of the film, two young people seek shelter on a large college campus where they find a mysterious man living alone in the campus tunnels. Everyone must decide who can be trusted as they struggle to survive the zombie threat.
‘This is a zombie movie with a message,’ said Graver. ‘It’s a social commentary focusing on the importance of human interaction in times of need.’
REVELATION has been an official selection at various film festivals, including Scotland’s Deep Fried Film Festival. It won the award for ‘Best Zombie Film’ at the 2010 Fright Night Film Festival in Louisville, KY.
The premiere will begin at 3:30 p.m. with several locally produced short films. The 28-minute Revelation will be followed by a 15-minute documentary about its production and a Q&A session. The event should last about an hour and a half. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at The Neon box office.”  (taken from WSU media release)  To watch the trailer for REVELATION, visit http://revelationzombie.com/ .

“In conjunction with a concert taking place at Gilly’s featuring Dave Greer’s Classic Jazz Stompers (the concert takes place on November 12), Cityfolk presents Brigitte Berman’s 1981 documentary on jazz cornetist Bix Beiderbecke – BIX.  Bix was a gifted composer, magnificent cornetist and doomed alcoholic (he died at 28) who battled those demons at a very inopportune time, the prohibition era of bootleg ‘hooch.’  He looms, with Louis Armstrong as one of the two most influential jazz soloists of the 1920s.  The movie captures interviews with boyhood friends from his hometown of Davenport, Iowa, and key musical collaborators such as Hoagy Carmichael.” (taken from Cityfolk press notes)  This film will screen on Wednesday, November 3 at 7PM.  Admission will be free!

On Thursday, November 18 at 8PM, New York director Gary Beeber (a Dayton native) will bring his movie DIRTY MARTINI AND THE NEW BURLESQUE to town – “a feature-length, independent documentary that explores the outrageous world of the performers who created the ‘new burlesque’ scene in New York City. Get to know Miss Dirty Martini and her friends Julie Atlas Muz, World-Famous *BOB*, Bambi the Mermaid, Tigger!, Scotty the Blue Bunny, and many other cult stars. The movie’s seductiveness comes from its sexy acts as well as its dark exploration of the performers’ struggle to pay their bills, quest for stable love relationships and inability to envision the future after burlesque. The relationship between sex work, burlesque and feminism are discussed. As a classically trained dancer, Dirty Martini has struggled since childhood to overcome criticism of her size. Like Bette Midler, she began her career as part of the downtown drag scene where she
was accepted for her talent. She went on to develop her act in the East Village drag clubs where the gay community appreciated her glamour and kitsch.
Dirty Martini redefines female beauty and allows other women, of all shapes and sizes, to feel uninhibited in expressing their raw sexuality.” (taken from press notes)  In addition to the documentary, Beeber is also rounding up regional Burlesque stars to put on a show for attendees.  More details will be available in the coming days, but for now you can check out a teaser trailer by clicking HERE.  Advanced tickets for this event will cost $15 – and will be available this weekend at THE NEON’s box office.  Tickets on the day of the show will be $20.

For the past several weeks, many of you have been asking about WAITING FOR SUPERMAN.  Please help us spread the word that this important film will begin its run on November 5th.

We hope to see you very soon.

Take care,
Jonathan
