The Rubi Girls present “The Show Must Go On” virtually

November 25, 2020 By LIbby Ballengee

The Rubi Girls in the “Show Must Go On 2020” at The Brightside

Every nonprofit has had to pivot their fundraisers to online events, and The Rubi Girls are no exception. The group has awarded millions to a variety of local charities, and they’re determined to keep giving, especially now, when the need is greatest.

The Rubi Girl’s annual Thanksgiving production “The Show Must Go On” will be presented online on Saturday November 28th at 7:30pm and will also be accessible anytime after it starts.

The Rubi Girls were formed over 35 years ago, when a small group of friends started putting on drag shows for their own amusement. They later became a 501c3 dedicated to helping others. They’ve truly shown that giving to others can be outrageously fun and rewarding!

The tickets to the virtual performance and fundraiser are $25, which comes with your own copy of the 2021 Rubi Girls calendar. Calendars can be shipped anywhere in the US or picked up at the Rubi Girls Clubhouse on Friday November 27th from 11-2pm or Saturday November 28th from 11-2pm.

MERCY ME! The RubiGirls to the RESCUE!

April 22, 2020 By Joshua Stucky

Dayton has quite a few heroes…Charles Kettering, The Wright Brothers, Erma Bombeck, Jane Reece…and of course, The RubiGirls! The ever-present, charity driven drag troupe have finally emerged in this time of quarantine to help us all laugh, love and raise some funds for our friends! This time the GIRLS, led by a quarter of qualified Queens, Fonda Peters, India Summer, Minnie Skirt and Dana Sintell, set their sights on people on the front line in this health crisis, and the folks making those amazing carry-out dinners in the area.

‘I received an email, ‘ says India Summer.”Where are the RubiGirls? There have been plenty of other queens posting all kinds of fun and frolic on Facebook, but NO RUBI???” That’s when we knew, it was time for us to make ourselves heard again. To spread the word that we are here to help.’

‘A show was what we needed to do, but social distancing presented a real problem.’ says the 7-foot tall Minnie Skirt. ‘How do we make this work?’

Enter the talents and touches of Tender Mercy. Chris Dimmick, Lauren Gay, Dave Kittredge and Branden Fugate had an idea. ‘Let’s do an actual production…a show…a virtual drag show that people can see online!’ Said Dimmick, The GIRLS were unsure as they are used to the idea of live, full theater, with a responsive audience. BUT, Dimmick held his position….’We can do this!’

‘I was curious!’ said the quintessential  Fonda Peters. ‘ Like a real TV show? Really….I asked them to explain!’ And explain they did.

Dimmick and Gay dug in and told the RubiGirls, ‘Start making videos, pre-produced, spliced and diced….until you have a show we can run! We will help with some video and sound of our own. We can do this!’

But Sintell balked…as she often does. ‘No, no, no…I initially squirmed. We need our fans three feet in front of us. They are our lifeblood. And besides, many of the live and virtual drag shows have been hideous and boring. The online shows have been greatly panned.  I wasn’t convinced….UNTIL….’

India Summer opened the eyes of all when she interjected. ‘What about all of the Girls make their own movie but we host the show live.  A bit of both. only a few girls, 6 feet apart, telling the RubiGirls story, but raising money for our friend in Dayton.’

Dimmick, Gay, Kittredge and Fugate smiled and said…’We got this Girls! We can do this! And it will be FABULOUS!’

And it definitely will. This Friday, April 24th starting at 7pm, the Girls have an unbelievable collection of old and new Rubi productions to share. The 75 minute show will feature Sintell and Peters as the Hostesses, with Skirt and Summer to assist. There will be virtual bar tours, spectacular RubiGirl numbers, and cocktail recipes, including the popular RubiSlipper. ‘The RubiSlipper has been a huge hit.’ says Dimmick. ‘The RubiGirls agreed to a 50% share of all the RubiSlippers we sold to go to charity. You won’t believe the amount of money we raised in just 3 days open (before the stay-at-home order). People love the drink, but even mores0, the RubiGirls!’ The Tender Mercy team will be on hand to tell their story to subscribers as well.

Minnie Skirt added, ‘We have seen the videos. WOW, WOW, WOW! Tara Misu and Magestik nailed their videos! And the opening is just amazing! Actually, everything you see is top notch!’

Fonda Peters chimed in, ‘I think this is the start of a new version of the RubiGirls. This show is really over-the-top entertaining. You will get to see the Girls all over Dayton celebrating the city and showing that life goes on! We are quarantined, but we are still able to take care of each other. That’s an important message right now.’

‘I’m impressed.’ Says Lauren Gay.’These RubiGirls are hard-workers. They really are bringing our community together this Friday! Something we can all share in!

Fugate interjected, ‘They like to drink, too.”

Dana Sintell wrapped up the conversation for us with ‘In this day and age, anyone can make a short film. Tik-Tok, IMovie, IPhone Films…etc. But again, the Girls take it to a new level. It’s about something bigger than the film. It’s about people. It’s about Dayton! We try to always keep Rubi on a level of MORE….More LOVE, More GIVING and More ENTERTAINING!.’

They have again achieved it.

For tickets, go to Tendermercy.com. Next click Mercy Mart. Then, Click on RubiGirl packages. Pick one! Look for your code which will be sent Friday for the BIG SHOW! Sit back and ENJOY!

8 ‘Girls,’ One Crown….Miss Rubicon Returns.

May 16, 2019 By Joshua Stucky

Dayton’s Beloved RubiGirls

There’s a different kind of ‘Game of Thrones’ happening this weekend at Masque. For the first time since 1996, the RubiGirls will pick a Queen in the Miss Rubicon, 2019 drag pageant. The event, Sunday May 19th, will be a pageant unlike any other in Dayton. This pageant focuses squarely on camp and crazy! Categories range from ‘Parade of Nations’ to ‘Gem City Evening Gown.
‘Our theme this year is UNITED. It’s fitting considering the environment many our facing.’ Says Francine Du Bois, Miss Rubicon 1990. ‘The contestants start in a parade of national costumes, move into state costumes, do their chosen talents, and end the show in Gem City Evening Wear! Knowing the RubiGirls, I assure you the costumes will be over the top…and possibly ridiculous.’

Miss Rubicon 1991, India Summer will be on hand.

The Pageant got its start in 1989 on Rubicon Street when the emerging RubiGirls were in their mid-twenties. ‘We hadn’t raised a dime at that time…it was all about fun and madness.’ says contestant Fonda Peters. ‘Here we are in 2019, about to celebrate helping groups around the area, state and country with $2,000,000 in total donations. It’s such a landmark!’

‘I see it this way, the RubiGirls have remained inspirational through all kinds of trying times. For many of us, it has been 35 years of performing.’ says Anita Beer, Miss Rubicon 1993. ‘We have remained committed to helping folks off all walks of life.’

The pageant kicks off at 1:30pm, doors open at 1:00pm. The crowning will take place around 4 at the after party ‘tea dance.’ The pageant cost $25 for the show and the tea dance. Tickets for just tea dance are $10.

‘Tea Dances’ are growing in popularity across the country, and Dayton needs one.’ says Penni Sillin, Miss Rubicon 1995. ‘We are hoping it takes off so it can be more consistent in the community. They are a great way to make Sunday a true Funday!’

Pia and Fonda looking for fun this weekend!

The pageant has drawn 8 contestants in hopes of winning the crown. ‘8 is really perfect. And with the 5 judges in place, it will be a fair, fun and unforgettable night.’ Says India Summer, Miss Rubicon 1991. ‘All of the living Rubicon Queens* will be there. And even more exciting, many of the past performers are returning to say hello! (*Miss Rubicon, 1992, Esther Price passed away a few years ago.) I can guarantee she’ll be watching from upstairs, rooting these girls on. She loved a good pageant!’

Jackie O has a real chance of taking the crown.

‘We are so hopeful that we bring in a crowd as we are using our funds to sponsor AIDS/LifeCycle. https://www.aidslifecycle.org. 2 of the RubiGirls, Annie Biotix and Pussy Galore are riding in the California event. They need our support.’ says Lupe Valezz, the reigning Miss Rubicon.

The RubiGirls are also hopeful that the pageant remains a mainstay of the Dayton Drag scene.
‘We have expanded to so many events around the area like trivia, bingo and brunches, it is fun to do something more geared to drag. That’s how this whole thing got started, and it needs to be celebrated.’ Dana Sintell, the first Miss Rubicon chimes in. ‘ I think anytime you have a group of friends, showing off to the crowds and putting their best face forward….it’s got to be a blast!’

December 5, 2017 By Jonathan McNeal

Hello Everyone!

The weekend after Thanksgiving is usually pretty soft at the box office…but not for us this year at THE NEON. Many thanks to all of you who have come to support our two big hits! Both LADY BIRD (which is now the best reviewed films ever on the RottenTomatoes site) and THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI will stick around for another week! Visit each film’s official site be clicking the links above.  You can watch the trailers here:

If you haven’t been to THE NEON after dark in the past several days, you may not have seen that our parking lot has undergone some significant lighting work.  We know you’ll feel even better about parking your car there after sundown.  Many thanks to the City of Dayton and the Convention Center for seeing to these improvements!

If you need gift-giving ideas for the film lover in your life, we’ve got you covered. NEON Gift Certificates are available at our box office in denominations of $5 and $10. We also just got in a new batch of NEON t-shirts with our slogan “Good To The Last Frame” on the back. Hurry in and get ’em while you can!

We also are helping The Rubi Girls by selling their annual wall calendar. The Rubi Girls are a charity-driven comedic drag troupe in town, and 100% of all calendar sales will go back to The Rubi Girls and the causes they champion. Calendars are $15 each or 2 for $20.

Our FAMILY HOLIDAY FILM SERIES was off to a nice start this past weekend, and we still have two more family-friendly films to go. Admission is free for children 12 and under, and general admission is just $2. This Saturday, December 9 at Noon, we’ll watch the holiday classic – MIRACLE ON 34th STREET – starring a young Natalie Wood. On December 16 at Noon, we’ll wrap up the series with HOME ALONE – can you believe this comedy classic starring Macaulay Culkin is already 27 years old?!? Tickets are first come, first serve – available 45 minutes before each screening.

Mark your calendars and please help spread the word. CHAVELA, a beautiful, award-winning documentary about Mexican singer Chavela Vargas, will have two special screenings in late January. On Saturday and Sunday, January 27 & 28 at Noon, director Daresha Kyi (who grew up in Dayton and graduated from The Miami Valley School) will present her documentary and participate in a Q&A. Ticketing details will be available soon. To learn more about the film, please click this LINK to visit the film’s official site.

Though our two current attractions are much-loved and doing great business, I’m excited even more for films yet to come.  THE SHAPE OF WATER, CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, FACES PLACES and FANTASTIC WOMAN are favorite films of the year…and they’re still coming down the pike.

Thanks so much for your continued support.
We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

Rubi Girls Event Features Film

July 13, 2013 By Megan Cooper Leave a Comment

Film is a powerful medium for education, advocacy and entertainment. Jonathan McNeal, who many know as the manager of The MakeUpNeon Movies downtown, is a filmmaker with a story to tell. He created a short that shared some of the stories of the Rubi Girls and their great work in HIV/AIDS awareness and entertainment. McNeal’s film is a centerpiece of a special event planned for August 3 – their Decade of Decadence Party.

The Rubi Girls documentary premiered in San Francisco in 2003 and has garnered awards and played around the world. In celebration of the tenth anniversary, The Rubi Girls invite you to their Decade of Decadence Party and Film Screening. Combining live performance, interview and archival footage, the documentary not only traces the history of the group and their madcap antics, but also attempts to redefine the term family values. The evening will include the film screening, a live Rubi Girls show and a Q&A followed by the kind of after party you’d expect to be thrown for this milestone event. The after party will include a DJ, a few additional Rubi performances, hors d’ouvres catered by Veritas Events, operator of Roost and Leo Bistro at The Dayton Art Institute, cash bars and other terrific Rubi surprises. (More info and tickets)

The Rubi Girls are Dayton’s beloved, comedic drag troupe…who now have helped to raise over 1 Million Dollars for HIV and LGBT-related causes.  What started as something just for laughs on Rubicon Street in the late 1980’s has blossomed into a FUNdraising phenomenon. FilmDayton spoke to filmmaker and Rubi Girl Jonathan McNeal to learn more about the evening and his experience with how his film has sparked conversation and advocacy.

Q: How long have you been involved with the Rubi Girls and what has your experience been like?

I’ve been with The Rubi Girls since the late 1990’s.  I was a fan first…a groupie even.  Once they found out I was a film student, they asked me to start videotaping their shows.  Eventually, as I got closer with the group, I started taking the camera backstage, too.  (Backstage was just as fun as what was happening on-stage.) After a year or more, I started to really become part of the family dynamic that was happening, and they eventually asked me to start performing with them.  Though I never would have asked on my own, it was what I wanted all along.

Q: How did the idea for a documentary come about?
I did research on a different documentary for about a year, and I determined it would be too expensive to pursue.  A friend said, “There’s a great story happening right in your own backyard.  It might be familiar to you, but it’d be a fresh story for a lot of people.”  That’s when I decided to start exploring the idea and asking if The Girls would be game.
 McNeal1
Q: Even as a group insider, did you learn anything from the process of creating the film?
I was still relatively fresh to the group when we started filming.  Though I had performed for almost two years with the troupe, I had missed out on over a decade of their evolution.  Asking questions and digging for answers taught me a lot about the history that I didn’t know.  In addition, the process of making the documentary helped me realize why the group was personally so important to me.
Q: Where has the film been shown and what kind of reception have you gotten?
The movie premiered in June of 2003 in San Francisco.  Immediately after that first screening, numerous LGBT film fests invited THE RUBI GIRLS to screen at their festivals.  That was a really great way to see the country…it played in Seattle, Chicago, Reno, Atlanta, Fire Island and many other cities.  Audiences loved the movie and loved the Girls, and a few awards were garnered along the way.

Q: What’s your feeling about bringing this film back to the public 10 years after its creation?
It’s great to bring the film back to the community where it all started, but interestingly, the movie has had continual play since its premiere.  Several colleges and organizations have used the film over the years for various reasons – either as an educational tool or part of a festival or celebration.
Wigs
Q: What’s the goal of the evening for you?
The goal of August 3 is true with the mission of The Rubi Girls.  We want to create a space that is vibrant with fun and creativity…that also allows us to spread the word about what’s important to us and our causes.  We always bring some component of HIV/AIDS awareness to our shows, and fundraising is a major aspect of what we do.  The Rubi Girls have now helped to raise over 1 Million Dollars for HIV and LGBT-related causes…and that’s something we’re very proud of.  The money raised during this event will be split between The Dayton Art Institute (to be used for sound upgrades in their auditorium) and RubiBenefits (to assist with a variety of causes that we support).
Q: And anything else you’d like to share/add?
The support of the Dayton community has been incredible.  The love from the press, the admiration and generosity from the fans, and the willingness to assist from so many local businesses has been instrumental to our success.  This embrace, combined with the success of the documentary, has allowed us to spread our message to numerous cities across the country, and I’m incredibly grateful for that.
Join the Rubis on August 3 to support RubiBenefits and help with sound upgrades for the DAI auditorium.

ANNA KARENINA and HITCHCOCK are Hits At THE NEON!

December 19, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Helen-Mirren-as-Alma-Reville-and-Anthony-Hopkins-as-Alfred-Hitchcock-on-the-set-of-HitchcockHello Everyone,

HITCHCOCK and ANNA KARENINA are performing quite well for us, so we’ll hold both for another week!
I’m happy to announce that along with our upgrade to digital projection, we also installed hearing assisted devices. These headphones are available for check-out when you purchase your tickets, and the devices work for all titles. For select titles, “Audio Description” is available. This is a service for the blind and visually impaired…and HITCHCOCK makes use of this technology. (A person narrates the on-screen action via headphones.) Please let us know if you’d like to try these out…and please help us spread the word to people who might be interested in these services.

Check out this lovely featurette about ANNA KARENINA:

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSmPXiGVjnI’]

Check out this fun scene from HITCHCOCK…it’s all about editing and makes me nostalgic for our 35mm projectors (not to mention the way I learned to edit 16mm film at WSU).

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOTq6KYDTfI’]

Do you use Facebook? If so, we’ve got a fun contest going on that uses the HITCHCOCK photobooth in our lobby. Check out our Facebook page for details on how you could win a HITCHCOCK prize pack – which includes dvds of PSYCHO and NORTH BY NORTHWEST. Only a handful of people have entered, so your chances are very good! But hurry up – the contest ends on Dec. 23! Here’s our page – www.facebook.com/neonmovies

If you were a fan of the one-night only screening of RIDE THE DIVIDE, mark your calendars now for January 23. We will host a one-night only screening of the new film REVEAL THE PATH. “REVEAL THE PATH is a genre-defying adventure film that contemplates what it means to live an inspired life using the bicycle as a mechanism to explore, dream and discover. Regions explored include Scotland’s lush valleys, Europe’s snow capped mountains, Morocco’s high desert landscapes, Nepal’s rural countryside and Alaska’s rugged coastal beaches…Meet the locals living modest yet seemingly fulfilling lives, leading us to question what it means to live an inspired life – however humble or extravagant. Join in as the creators of RIDE THE DIVIDE take you on an adventure that will leave you with an eager desire to chart your own course to far away lands or simply to discover with eyes wide open what’s right around the bend.” (taken from press notes) Check out the official site to find out more about the film and to purchase advanced tickets. (We will not be selling advanced tickets for this event at our box office…they will only be available on the official site.)

If you are in need of a fun stocking stuffer, we have day planners featuring The Rubi Girls in our lobby for $20 each or 2 for $30. The Rubi Girls are a comedic drag troupe here in Dayton who have now helped to raise over One Million Dollars for HIV Charities in Ohio. 100% of the price of the planner goes back to AIDS Resource Center Ohio. (These planners are intended for mature audiences.)

We just confirmed our line-up for the next few weeks. On December 28, we will open SMASHED for one week – featuring a fantastic performance by Mary Elizabeth Winstead (who was just nominated for an Independent Spirit Award). On January 4 we will open 2 new films – HYDE PARK ON HUDSON (with Bill Murray as FDR) and PROMISED LAND (starring Matt Damon, John Krasinski and Frances McDormand – directed by Gus Van Sant)! I think we’ll start the year off with some enthusiastic audiences.

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBqPv6xO6es’]

Thanks so much for your ongoing support!
Just a reminder – we’re open 365 Days a Year!
We hope to see you soon,
Jonathan

SLEEPWALK WITH ME at THE NEON + Big Benefit News!

October 9, 2012 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone,

Huge changes are just around the corner for THE NEON. Before I get to the source of my anxiety, let’s talk movies. If you still want to see THE MASTER, Thursday will be your last chance to see it with us. On Friday, we will open a film that has had the most requests this year – SLEEPWALK WITH ME. ARBITRAGE had a solid opening weekend…so it will stick around.

Synopsis for SLEEPWALK WITH ME: From the producers of THIS AMERICAN LIFE, this is the film that Ira Glass has been talking about! “When an aspiring stand-up fails to express his true feelings about his girlfriend and his stalled career, his anxiety comes out in increasingly funny and dangerous sleepwalking incidents.” (IFC Films)

[yframe url=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9tRN7bok4o’]

This weekend is the last chance to see movies via 35mm film at THE NEON. On Sunday evening, we will close our doors for 4 days as we make the transition to digital projection (the new industry standard). Our “Things To Do” list is jam-packed. Over the past 11 years, we’ve opened our doors for business every single day…while we’re closed, we’re going to take advantage of the opportunity and do some major cleaning, lay some new carpet and add some fresh paint to floors and walls.

THE KING’S SPEECH – Exclusively at THE NEON!

December 23, 2010 By Jonathan McNeal 3 Comments

Hello Everyone.

I’m absolutely thrilled to announce that THE KING’S SPEECH will open exclusively at THE NEON on December 25. Being that the 25th is a Saturday, our schedule is a bit strange this week. THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET’S NEST will play through Friday, THE KING’S SPEECH starts Saturday, and BLACK SWAN will hold.

And speaking of BLACK SWAN…Wow! What a weekend! For a film that opened on multiple screens, BLACK SWAN was our biggest opening of the year. (That said, CRAZY HEART – which we had exclusively for one week back in January – was still our best.)

Synopsis for THE KING’S SPEECH: “England’s Prince Albert (Colin Firth), soon to become King George VI, is plagued by a crippling speech impediment. With her husband soon to take over the throne, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) hires Lionel Logue, an Australian actor and speech therapist, to help Albert overcome his stammer. An extraordinary friendship develops between the pair as Logue uses unconventional means to teach Albert how to speak with confidence.” (Weinstein Co.) 7 Golden Globe Nominations including BEST PICTURE!

We have a special treat for those of you looking to give NEON gift certificates this holiday season. For every $50 of gift certificates you purchase, you will receive a free bag of Candy Cane Granola. This delicious, locally made snack was recently sampled by the staff…and quickly became a favorite. Loaded with peppermint schnapps, white chocolate, dried cranberries and almonds, you might end up keeping this treat for yourself.

Lastly, I want to remind you about 2011 calendars from The Rubi Girls. Calendars are available in our lobby for $20 each – 100% of which goes to local charities. And now we’re offering a special deal so you can stuff everyone’s stockings this year…Calendars are now 2 for $30!
If you’d like to see a little video I put together about the calendar, click on this LINK. If you want to know more about The Rubi Girls, visit www.rubigirls.com.

“Jasmine “Jazz” Taylor, a 2006 alumnus of Stivers School of the Arts and graduate of The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles, will premiere the DVD of a fashion show fundraiser that helped further her educational development. The fashion show involved the community and showed the world that dreams can come true if you believe. The show focused on the “A Touch of Jazz” fashion line along with two new up and coming designers: Jamila Jones and Jamae Abney. In addition to the designers, local students were featured; doing anything from dancing, singing, and rapping, to modeling and playing instruments.
Unwrapping The Dream Fashion Show DVD Premiere Release is an opportunity for fashion show participates to fellowship with their peers, family, and friends while watching themselves on the big screen. It will be held Sunday January 16, 2011 at THE NEON – tickets are just $5.” (taken from press notes)

I’ll be here all day on the 25th, so I’m sure I’ll see some of you.
Have a wonderful, warm and safe holiday season.

Take care,
Jonathan

BLACK SWAN & TAMARA DREWE at The Neon!

December 16, 2010 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone.

There are two films that so many people have been talking & asking about, and this Friday marks the opening of the first – Darren Aronofsky’s BLACK SWAN, starring Natalie Portman. (The other film – THE KING’S SPEECH – is right around the corner…with 7 Golden Globe Nominations.)
If you still need to see 127 HOURS, you only have until Thursday to see it at THE NEON. (All these films are certain to be Oscar contenders in a couple months…so don’t miss seeing them on the big screen.)

On Friday, in addition to BLACK SWAN, we will open a much smaller film directed by one of my favorite directors – Stephen Frears. TAMARA DREWE, based on a graphic novel that was in turn based on a Thomas Hardy novel – FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD – will play for one week only. (On a similar note, THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET’S NEST will only play for one more week.)

Synopsis for BLACK SWAN: “New York City ballet dancer Nina (Natalie Portman) enters into an intense battle of wills with a talented and ambitious new arrival (Mila Kunis) who seems intent on edging her out of the spotlight in this supernatural-flavored psychological thriller from director Darren Aronofsky.” (Jason Buchanon, All Movie Guide) **Nominated for 4 Golden Globe Awards Including Best Picture**  For the official site, visit – http://www.ijustwanttobeperfect.com/

Synopsis for TAMARA DREWE: “Tamara Drewe (Gemma Arterton) was born and raised in Ewedown, a quiet community on the outskirts of London dominated by a writer’s colony run by Nicholas Hardiment (Roger Allam), a best-selling novelist who specializes in crime fiction, and his wife Beth (Tamsin Greig). When Tamara left Ewedown, she was a plain and awkward teenager, but when she returns home for the first time in years, the locals are surprised to discover that time (and a nose job) have turned her into an attractive and alluring woman, and she’Tamara Drewe was adapted from the graphic novel of the same name by Posy Simmonds, which was in turn inspired by Thomas Hardy’s novel Far From the Madding Crowd.” (Mark Deming, All Movie Guide)  For the official site, visit – http://sonyclassics.com/tamaradrewe/

The Children’s Holiday Film Series is about to wrap up! Films are FREE for children 12 and under…and only $2 for adults. This week’s selection is based on the classic book by Dr. Seuss!

We have a special treat for those of you looking to give NEON gift certificates this holiday season. Holiday Film Series & More at THE NEON

December 3, 2010 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone.

This newsletter will be short and sweet. We’ve got 2 great films…and they’re both performing very well…so they’re gonna stick around. 127 HOURS and FAIR GAME were a great mix for us over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. If you still need to see either one, hurry on down!

The Downtown Holiday Festival will begin this year’s Children’s Holiday Film Series on Saturday! Films are FREE for children 12 and under…and only $2 for adults. This week’s selection is a film that is absolute magic on the big screen. Though not often thought of as a holiday film, MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS is a perfect film for the whole family – and how can you go wrong with Judy Garland singing the bittersweet American standard “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas?”
Here’s the full line-up:
Dec. 4 at Noon – MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS (“Clang, clang, clang went the trolley…”)
Dec. 11 at Noon – ELF (comedy starring Will Ferrell)
Dec. 18 at Noon – THE GRINCH (the beloved Dr. Seuss tale starring Jim Carrey)

December 1st  was World AIDS Day…a day to reflect on the lives of those who have passed from HIV/AIDS complications…and a day to remember that the fight isn’t over. New cases, especially in young demographics, are on the rise. THE RUBI GIRLS, known for their work with various HIV/AIDS charities, have unveiled their 2011 wall calendar – and they’re now available in our lobby. Calendars are just $20 each, and 100% of that amount will go to charities in the Miami Valley. If you still need a 2011 calendar…or you’re looking for a fun, unique gift…check out the calendar next time you’re here. Last year’s edition sold out, and this year’s edition is even more wonderful! If you’re an out-of-town subscriber to this newsletter, you can always visit www.arcohio.org to buy your calendar on-line – where 100% stays with AIDS Resource Center Ohio.
Special thanks to those of you who wrote to me upon hearing the story about The Rubi Girls during “All Things Considered” on WYSO.

We hope to see you very soon.

Take care,
Jonathan

INSIDE JOB & Big Announcements! (NOWHERE BOY is leaving)

November 11, 2010 By Jonathan McNeal Leave a Comment

Hello Everyone.

I just returned from almost 5 full days in NYC – a perfect getaway. That said, I haven’t had a chance to see NOWHERE BOY (the period film about the young John Lennon) yet, but the few folks I’ve spoken with today have loved it. Unfortunately, the movie didn’t perform well enough to stick around. Thursday, November 11 at 5:00 will be your last chance to see it at THE NEON.
On Friday, we open INSIDE JOB. If you’ve been to THE NEON in the past few weeks, I’m guessing you’ve seen the trailer. This film has been given a 100% review from THE NEW YORK TIMES, VARIETY, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, CHICAGO-SUN TIMES, THE BOSTON GLOBE and more!

Synopsis for INSIDE JOB: “Producer/director Charles Ferguson (NO END IN SIGHT) speaks at length with journalists, politicians, and financial insiders in order to offer a clearer picture of the economic meltdown that hit America starting in 2008. Academy Award winner Matt Damon narrates this unflinching look at the deep-rooted corruption that has left millions of middle-class Americans jobless and homeless as the major corporations get bailed out while paying millions in bonuses.” (Jason Buchanan, American Movie Guide)
www.sonyclassics.com/insidejob

There’s only 1 film left in Living City’s Festival tribute to Jeff Bridges.
RANCHO DELUXE (sponsored by CityWide Development) – Nov. 15 at 7PM
Single tickets will be $8 each – available before the show.

The Ohio Liberty Film Festival starts this week at multiple venues. This is the second year for the festival, and more information can be found by clicking HERE.
The Liberty Film Fest ia a “…celebration of freedom and liberty. The underlying idea is that man’s great achievements, whether artistic, scientific or intellectual, have come about through the exercise of freedom and opportunity. The intent will be to showcase films that show the positive use of freedom, and also the negative outcomes and conditions related to the suppression of freedom.” (taken from Liberty Film Fest’s website)
Here’s a detail I didn’t know until recently. All screenings are FREE!
Films screening at THE NEON are:
RESCUE DAWN – Thursday, November 11 at 2:30pm
THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES – Thursday, November 11 at 7:30
ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST – Sunday, November 14 at 2:30

On Thursday, November 18 at 8PM, New York director Gary Beeber (a Dayton native) will bring his movie DIRTY MARTINI AND THE NEW BURLESQUE to town – “a feature-length, independent documentary that explores the outrageous world of the performers who created the ‘new burlesque’ scene in New York City. Get to know Miss Dirty Martini and her friends Julie Atlas Muz, World-Famous *BOB*, Bambi the Mermaid, Tigger!, Scotty the Blue Bunny, and many other cult stars. The movie’s seductiveness comes from its sexy acts as well as its dark exploration of the performers’ struggle to pay their bills, quest for stable love relationships and inability to envision the future after burlesque. The relationship between sex work, burlesque and feminism are discussed. As a classically trained dancer, Dirty Martini has struggled since childhood to overcome criticism of her size. Like Bette Midler, she began her career as part of the downtown drag scene where she
was accepted for her talent. She went on to develop her act in the East Village drag clubs where the gay community appreciated her glamour and kitsch.
Dirty Martini redefines female beauty and allows other women, of all shapes and sizes, to feel uninhibited in expressing their raw sexuality.” (taken from press notes) In addition to the documentary, Beeber is also rounding up regional Burlesque stars to put on a show for attendees – including Champagne Shock, Viva Valezz!, Pandora Foxx and Nina Cherry. Check out a teaser trailer by clicking HERE. Advanced tickets for this event are $15 and are available at THE NEON’s box office. Tickets on the day of the show will be $20.

THE RUBI GIRLS have unveiled their 2011 wall calendar, and they’re now available in our lobby. Calendars are just $20 each, and 100% of that amount will go to charities in the Miami Valley. If you still need a 2011 calendar…or you’re looking for a fun, unique gift…check out the calendar next time you’re here. Last year’s edition sold out, and this year’s edition is even more wonderful. Hurry down.

As of right now, we are set to have the exclusive opening for Danny Boyle’s new film 127 HOURS – featuring a fantastic, lead performance by James Franco – on November 24. We need to make the Thanksgiving weekend a huge success, so please consider planning a screening of this incredible new film (which will certainly show up during Academy Award nominations) during your holiday plans!

We hope to see you very soon.

Take care,
Jonathan
