Route 66: A Celebration of the Mother Road

Wright Library welcomes the Victor Samalot Duo performing “The Mother Road: A Celebration of Route 66” to kick off the Summer Reading Challenge and honor both the America 250 and the 100th anniversary of Route 66.

Get your kicks through essential road music, visuals and backstories of one of America’s most iconic highways – Route 66. Learn the rich history, cultural impact, the kitschy cool nostalgia, plus must-do travel tips along the way. This performance is sure to entertain and inspire reading lists, play-lists and perhaps spark your “bucket list” road trip!

Victor Samalot, Cleveland-born guitarist, fuses Latin grooves, jazz sophistication, and a rock edge into a vibrant world-fusion sound. His work has earned radio airplay locally and worldwide, along with press coverage from All About Jazz, JazzReviews.com, 20th Century Guitar, Progression Magazine, and more.

Bobbi Holt is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist from Cleveland Ohio. She is returning to the stage with her long-time collaborator adding bass guitar to Victor’s organic rhythmic vibe.

50 Years without Natalie Clifford Barney. Come celebrate her remarkable life in the place of her birth, Dayton, Ohio!

You’re invited to join us on Wed, Feb 2nd from 12-12:30pm to celebrate and honor the incredible life of Natalie Clifford Barney, a Daytonian ahead of her time. We will gather at her Ohio Historical Marker (the first in the state to recognize and acknowledge a famous Ohioan for their contributions to LGBTQ+ arts, culture, and history). This is a free, outdoor event.
 
It’s been 50 years since her death. As they remember her in Paris, her adopted home, they’ve invited us to honor her here in Dayton too. Professor Samuel Dorf (UD), author of a Natalie Clifford Barney biography Performing Antiquity is arranging this event with help from Libby Ballengee and others. We’re planning to read poetry and remember this amazing lady.

Dayton LGBT Center Celebrates Coming Out

National Coming Out Day(NCOD) is observed annually around the world on Ocotber the 11th to help create an environment where living openly and honestly is possible.  On Oct. 11, 2018, the Greater Dayton LGBT Center will celebrate the 30th anniversary of National Coming Out Day, raising awareness of civili rights for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community.  

“Coming out is one of the most courageous acts any LGBTQ person makes, and on this National Coming Out Day that courage remains essential to our continued progress toward full equality,” says president of the Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin.  HRC is the largest LGBT advocacy and political lobbying organization in the United States.

The local celebration will also serve as the “coming out” party for  the Greater Dayton LGBT Center.  The Center, at 24 N. Jefferson Street, Suite 200, has undergone a huge transformation and will open to the public for our Grand Opening on October 11th at 6 pm. The Grand opening will also feature an art show with works by local and national artists which will include two pieces by the artist Keith Haring.

The Center will serve hors d’oeuvre beginning at 6 pm as a social hour with a program at 7 pm featuring members of our local community sharing their coming out stories. Randy Phillips, President of The Greater Dayton LGBT Center shares, “These coming out stories from different eras offer a built-in history lesson of our community.”

The Right Corner: How A Downtown Mainstay Suddenly Boomed!

You walk into 105 East Third Street and there is a conversation among a small family of friends about still having a ‘Christmas Tree  up in my living room.’ Everyone laughs. The bartender, today it’s DanaThompson, a sweetheart of a guy who is beloved by his patrons, mixes another vodka tonic and smiles. ‘This is what we do. We share our secrets.’

‘We are a neighborhood bar. Truly. It’s interesting to see the change in our clientele over the years. Suddenly, everyone stops in. It’s great for us.’ Dana says.

‘It’s all about family here.’ says Amanda Kayne, one of Right Corner’s disciples and sometimes performers. ‘The word family is true. We all care about each other, and this is our place to keep in touch.’ As I talk with her, she laughs with the folks around and in the background Joan Jett blares out ‘Crimson and Clover’ from the jukebox. ‘I try to come here 7 days a week.’ she goes on, ‘I don’t want to miss anything or anyone.’

The Right Corner is rich in its history. In 1994, ‘Changes,’ another downtown hot spot, which sat across from Spaghetti Warehouse, was purchased by Reynolds and Reynolds. The owners, in turn, bought the space that would become the Corner. ‘We have a lot fo the former ‘Changes’ in here.’ says Dana. He points out a phone booth, a gorgeous wall relief, and then the stunner…’see these mirrors that make up our back wall….that was the dance-floor at ‘Changes.’

(What the……I remember in my youth dancing on that wall…uh ,that floor….and it lit up!!)

Its’ apparent that the Corner knows what works. Little has truly changed over the years….but the crowds are bigger. ‘In the last 3 years, we have seen a huge uptick. It’s been amazing. Especially Fridays.’ Dana goes on, as he mixes a Makers and 7….this time for me! They have an amazing Happy Hour….M-F 1p-8p, uh-huh, 1p-8p.

‘Many people are coming to realize the bar is more of a neighborhood bar. We like strays and straights.’ says Jay, a regular. ‘By far, this place has the friendliest atmosphere, no pretense, down-to-Earth clients, and the best bartenders.’ Certainly, the bartenders are the most experienced. Between the 3, there is 110 years of bartending.  Dana quips, ‘Young people walk in and see an older bartender and they roll their eyes. Then I make them their favorite drink….it changes their tune real quick!’

Right Corner awaits Fire Blocks District

For many in the Fire Blocks District, it’s all about growth and a new entertainment area. For the Right Corner it’s ‘Something we look forward to, but we like who we are and what we are. Everything can change around us, we want to be the ‘Right Corner!’

Another frequent visitor, Robert, chimes in. ‘There is always someone to chat with here. I know for most of us, if we have friends from out of town, this is where we bring them. they love it! Its so respectful, even our mothers love it in here!’

Subtle and modest, the Corner has a much-loved patio that sits oddly in a parking lot. A pool table, popcorn machine and television are the entertainment…unless it’s a show night. ‘We have great drag shows, three to four times a year. Great stars like Amanda Kayne and Dana Sintell.’ says the bartender.

The Right Corner does one thing very well…it brings on the family vibe. They have monthly birthday parties for their fans. ‘We give cards and we make a special dinner for monthly birthdays. It’s important to make people feel cared for.’

Barbara has been a fan for a while. ‘My husband (who passed away last year) and I have been coming here for 23 years. I have always felt loved here. I love this place. So much so, they call me ‘Norm!’ Appropriate for a place many have called a ‘gay Cheers.’

As I finish my Makers, I begin to realize how much I love it here. It’s warm, and inviting. You see members of the WGI and stars from area theater in here. You sense that its special, a strange kind of Shangri-La.

Perhaps its Anthony who hits the nail on the head. (by the way, Thanks Anthony for buying my drink! That was way too kind!) He says it like this, ‘Not only is it a happy, friendly family, the Right Corner is community and civic minded. They care for anyone who walks in the door.’
Yep. A neighborhood bar…and they are neighborly!

Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DCC Brings Equality Tour to Dayton

In March 2018, Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington (GMCW) will embark on its second bus tour. They will take their Make America Gay Again concert on the road to spread a message of equality, dignity, and justice to ten cities over four days. They  will partner with local churches, LGBTQ centers, and gay-straight alliances to raise awareness and much-needed funds, so these organizations can continue to do the vital work that they do. The goal of the Equality Tour is to bring people together and start conversations while spreading a message of equality through song.

Their Dayton appearance has been coordinated by  Michael Knote of Have A Gay Day. He was contacted by the GMCW and  they suggested doing a fundraiser here in the Dayton community. Michael was able to secure a venue and helped coordinate local LGBT group to promote the event.  Proceeds from this “Concert for a Cause” will benefit The Greater Dayton LGBT Center, PFLAG Dayton, The Gatlyn Dame Group, and Have a Gay Dayton.

The concert will be held this Friday March 23 beginning at noon and lasting about an hour at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 515 E. Third Street in Dayton. The Washington D.C. chorus of about 100 will arrive in Dayton via three tour buses as a part of their “Equality Tour” in which they will visit 10 cities in four days to aid churches, LGBTQ Centers, and Gay Straight Alliances in raising funds for their respective local communities. Our local Dayton Gay Men’s Chorus will join the D.C. chorus in song.

General Admission tickets: $10 and Student and Senior Tickets are $8.

Tickets are available online or at the door.

After the show have lunch at Table 33 between 1:30 and 3:30pm and they’ll make a donation from your bill to the Concert for a Cause.  You can also bring your ticket to MJ’s on Jefferson and they’ll waive your cover charge on Thursday night.  Saturday, Marcy 24th Wheat Penny will donate a portion of their proceeds from sales between 11am – 5pm to the cause as well.

Dayton Receives Perfect Score for LGBTQ Equality

For the second consecutive year, Dayton has received a perfect score on the Municipal Equality Index of policies and practices supporting equality on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

The annual Municipal Equality Index is compiled by the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ advocacy organization. The 2017 index rates a total of 506 cities, based on 44 criteria.
Dayton’s perfect score reflects its anti-discrimination ordinance, inclusive employment policies, law enforcement practices, municipal services and equality leadership. The 101-point raw score exceeds the index’s 100-point maximum.
Dayton was also named an All-Star City for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights. The All-Star status results from earning a score higher than 80 despite being located in a state without protections for LGBTQ people.
“Dayton continues to be a leader in supporting equality, often exceeding state and federal protections,” said Mayor Nan Whaley. “Our commitment to diversity and inclusion is the right thing to do and is essential to Dayton’s future growth.”
“Dayton believes its diverse tapestry of residents, from all kinds of backgrounds, has been key to its successes in the past and will be key to its future success.  Being a welcoming community makes Dayton a better place for everyone,” said Kery Gray, Director of City Commission Office and the Mayor’s Liaison to the LGTBQ community.

DAYTON LGBT FILM FEST Heading Into 12th Year!

What do Bette Midler, Danny Glover, Danny DeVito, Laura Linney, Ian McKellen and Laverne Cox all have in common? They all have films playing at The Dayton LGBT Film Festival this year!

Titles are locked down, marketing materials are ready to go, and visiting artists are securing their travel plans for The 12th Annual Dayton LGBT Film Fest – taking place next month at THE NEON in Downtown Dayton.

During the weekend of Oct. 13-15, the festival will screen 17 films (a combination of shorts and features) with ties to the LGBT community – ranging from American comedies to International dramas…from narratives to documentaries. Directors, stars and other creative individuals from a handful of the selections are slated to attend.

One special guest will be Jill Alexander, an accomplished actress and co-star of SENSITIVITY TRAINING (pictured above on the left). The committee selected the film from over 100 submissions this year and was unaware (until after booking the film) that Alexander grew up right here in the Miami Valley and attended Beavercreek High School. The festival is thrilled to bring Alexander back home to share her work with the community and her family.

On Friday, October 13, attendees of the Opening Night Film FREAK SHOW will be invited to the Opening Night Party at The Mudlick Tavern – just a few blocks from THE NEON. For $8, guests will see the movie and then enjoy a complimentary cocktail and appetizers – this is certain to be a very hot ticket.

Dayton Writers Movement is gearing up for the premiere of UNWRITTEN – SEASON 2 on Sunday, Aug. 27 at 5:30. “UNWRITTEN is a serialized audio drama podcas – think radio play – written, acted and produced locally here in Dayton. This year’s Dayton LGBT Film Fest is shaping up, and we’re almost ready to start rolling out details. Mark your calendars for Oct. 13-15, it’s going to be a great weekend-long fest!  And speaking of film festivals, The Toronto International Film Festival has begun releasing titles from this year’s line-up…I’m getting pretty excited about several of them!

Some local organizations are very excited about our engagement of AN INCONVENIENT SEQUEL and the opportunity to continue local discussions about our climate with you. After Tuesday August 15’s 7:30 screening, representatives from Citizens Climate Lobby, Sierra Club Miami Group, The Climate Mobilization, and Move To Amend will hold a panel discussion. In addition, there will be other opportunities to engage with members from these organizations at various locations at different times around town. Synopsis for MERU: “In the high-stakes pursuit of big-wall climbing, the Shark’s Fin on Mount Meru may be the ultimate prize. As the hall grew in popularity its socialist and free-spirited reputation brought it to the attention of the church and politicians who forced Jimmy to flee and the hall to close.” (taken from Sony Classics) Ken Loach has been making beautiful films since the late 1960’s. From KES (1969) to SWEET SIXTEEN (2002) to THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY (2006), his films are lovely pieces of work that showcase his naturalistic craftsmanship. Observe International Peace Day with family, friends and neighbors by meeting up at THE NEON for I AM BIG BIRD: THE CAROLL SPINNEY STORY – an engaging and heartwarming film brought to you by the Dayton International Peace Museum. The Peace Museum is celebrating 11 years of helping people throughout Miami Valley and beyond explore the question, “What does a more peaceful world look like for you?” “For 45 years, Caroll Spinney has been beloved by generations of children as the man behind Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch – and at 80 years old, he has no intention of stopping. A loving portrait of the man in the yellow suit, I AM BIG BIRD features extraordinary footage of Spinney’s earliest collaborations with Jim Henson as it traces his journey from bullied child to childhood icon. And as the yellow feathers give way to grey hair, it is the man, not the puppet, who will steal your heart.” Tickets are first come, first serve. Suggested donation – $10. The Deaf Community Resource Center is bringing a special, one-time screening of THE DEAF CLUB to town on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7:30. This movie is completely done in sign language (though subtitles are available for those who don’t sign). “Deaf people have it all – friends, romance, fights, etc. – at their own club, where everyone uses sign language. Suddenly, the members face a situation where their precious club may have to close. Can they save the deaf club? Almost the entire production team is deaf or hard of hearing.” (taken from press notes) Tickets, just $10 each, will be available at THE NEON’s box office beginning Monday, Aug 24.

On Saturday, September 26 at Noon, Twentig, Inc. will host a special benefit screening and discussion of the film BELLE. “BELLE is a historical fictionalization of a true story about Dido Elizabeth Belle who was born of mixed race in the West Indies. She lived with her great uncle William Murray, the first Earl of Mansfield, Lord Chief Justice of England. Lord Mansfield’s decision on a case in 1786 in the English Courts led to the abolition of slavery in Britain. The film was inspired by the 1779 painting of Belle beside her cousin Lady Elizabeth Murray at Kenwood House.” (taken from press notes) Tickets are $30 each and come with admission to the film, the post-film discussion, a glass of wine and popcorn. Filmmaker Tony West will bring his Award Winning Documentary, THE SAFE SIDE OF THE FENCE, to THE NEON on Sunday Oct 4 at 5:00. “World War II’s Manhattan Project required the refinement of massive amounts of uranium, and St. Louis-based Mallinckrodt Chemical Works took on the job. As a result, the chemical company’s employees would become some of the most contaminated nuclear workers in history. This documentary explores the legacy that St. Louis is still coping with, from workers who became ill – to the challenges of dealing with the fallout of creating some of the world’s first nuclear waste. The story is not unique to St. Louis, as more than 300 facilities across America would become part of the race to build the bomb, and be forced to deal with the same issues. It’s Year 10 for THE DAYTON LGBT FILM FESTIVAL, and we’re pulling out all the stops. In addition to the best LGBT Films touring the world on the festival circuit, we’ll have special guests, throw a great party and bring back a campy classic with a crazy, fun spin (HINT: You might want to bring a wire hanger). Some films have familiar faces (like SNL’s Kristen Wiig or GLEE’s Chord Overstreet), but many films might star people you’ve never seen before. Take a chance! HOW TO MURDER YOUR MELANCHOLY is a short dark psychological drama with horror elements filmed entirely in the Dayton, Ohio region. This one and only screening of the short film is the directorial debut of local resident Kevin Nam. The director requires a mature audience due to scenes of graphic violence, blood, and gore. The director will also be in attendance for a brief Q & A immediately following the film. Please arrive early, screening will promptly begin at 8 pm. Tickets are on a first-come first-serve basis. Over the past 14 years that I’ve been at THE NEON, THE D TRAIN ranks as one of the biggest box office disappointments we’ve ever had. We had to lose it quickly. Today, we opened a new film with Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart – CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA. (Stewart became the first American to ever win a Cesar award for her role in this film. The Cesar Awards are France’s equivalent to our Academy Awards.) In addition, we will open the 40th Anniversary Restoration of GREY GARDENS – the documentary that became the basis for numerous books, an HBO narrative film and even a Broadway musical. We will continue our run of WHILE WE’RE YOUNG for one more week. Next week, we’ll open the gorgeous new film FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD!

Synopsis for GREY GARDENS: The original documentary from 1975 has received a 40th Anniversary Restoration! This is one of my favorite movies. In fact, when the musical adaptation premiered (before its move to Broadway), I scurried to NYC to see it. “Meet Big and Little Edie Beale: mother and daughter, high-society dropouts, and reclusive cousins of Jackie Onassis. The two manage to thrive together amid the decay and disorder of their East Hampton, New York, mansion, making for an eerily ramshackle echo of the American Camelot. On Tuesday, May 26 at 7:30, T.J.’s Place of Hope will host a screening of I AM A GIRL. This film is “an inspirational feature length documentary that paints a clear picture of the reality of what it means to be a girl in the 21st century. Feminism may have promised equality and sought a better and fairer world for women but the reality is that girls make up almost a quarter of the world’s population yet still face the greatest discrimination of any group in the world. Technology and science offer unimaginable potential but we still struggle to ensure men and women are afforded equal opportunities. It chronicles his hardscrabble life and the profound impact he made on musicians eager to explore his technique – a homegrown guitar style forged from ragtime, gospel and blues. In addition to archival footage and interview segments with Bob Weir, Jorma Kaukonen, John Cohen, David Bromberg, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and others, the film features newly recorded versions of songs Davis was closely identified with performed by a band led by Woody Mann. Unfortunately, those trends proved to be right in line with the film’s performance in Dayton. On Sunday, Oct. 19 at 5:30, Jeff Akers has rented one of our auditoriums to locally premiere his new short film ILLUMINATION. “Jeff Akers Films, a subsidiary of NJP Media Network, is pleased to announce the release of the riveting new short film ILLUMINATION, which brings to light the mindset of an unbeliever who continues to deny that God is real. The film is set in current reality but personifies new age technology and the power it can have on those in control of it. ILLUMINATION stars veteran actor Shane Willimon, as well as newcomers like Chedrick Cohens, Kenya Permenter, and Darrell Brown who bring this film to life with their skill and believability on screen. Director Jeff Akers plans to screen the film in Greenville, SC and Dayton, Ohio where the majority of it was filmed, he will also enter the production into numerous Christian-based film festivals. ‘This film will not only surprise people, but it will have them thinking on a completely different level,’ he stated. The Dayton LGBT Film Festival is right around the corner, and we have 4 guests who will attend screenings this year. Lisa Hass, lead actress and writer of THE FOXY MERKINS, is flying in from NYC. Director Drew Van Steenbergen will join the writer and star of ALONE WITH PEOPLE – both flying in from L.A. Chinonye Chukwu, writer and director of A LONG WALK, is now part of the Motion Pictures Department at WSU and a recent Dayton transplant. We’re moving forward this weekend with 2 new films! THE SKELETON TWINS has been winning high praise for Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, and ALIVE INSIDE is a moving documentary that will uplift audiences and perhaps start a local movement.

THE WAY HE LOOKS, the opening night film of this year’s Dayton LGBT Film Festival, was selected by Brazil to represent their country in this year’s Oscar race. We’re so delighted that this little gem is getting such great recognition around the world!
