Oh my Goodness…and Grace!

March 3, 2017 By Nikki Nett

Sometimes, you stumble upon a Dayton Gem and can’t believe you never knew it was there. And sometimes, you trek through a way too cool old building to find a sunny little space full of awesome. Armed with a bottle of Pinot Grigio and some fancy schmancy plastic cups, I recently did just that.

Tucked away in the up and coming Davis-Linden building, you’ll find the just-barely-revealed-to-the-public Goodness and Grace Photography Studio. As my velvet heels made their way up the stairs to this new space, I couldn’t help but ooh and ahh over the industrial charm of the sprawling building. Once those fancy schmancy cups were full of the aforementioned Pinot, I sat down with my friend, Shana Lloyd, the Goodness & Grace owner for some girl talk and to hear about the big plans for the studio.

[Girl Talk omitted, because, duh]

Shana, this place is gorgeous. I’m guessing it was a blank canvas when you moved in, where did you find the vision to bring this to life?

Thanks! No disrespect to the Davis Linden Building, because I swoon daily walking into the warehouse but it was definitely blank and dusty. The first week of renovations was all about cleaning, sanding, spackling. I had a vision that didn’t necessary equate to warehouse chic. Don’t get me wrong, I am all about the industrial look and can’t wait to shoot in and around the building, but we wanted our place to be a little bit of magic in the center of it all.

The vision was pulled from various different sources of inspiration. Working with other portrait and commercial studios in the past, years in retail fashion marketing, I definitely knew what I loved and what I didn’t love, what I would do differently. I wanted to create a place that had all the comforts of home, with intricate details and energy I just wasn’t seeing elsewhere- energy that would inspire my clients, both portrait & commercial as well as myself. In short, I wanted to create a happy place. The new studio is really something special. We initially set out to create 3-4 separate shooting areas but then decided to create a workspace that could be used at every angle for our purposes and shooting purposes. We also have built in the flexibility to rearrange and create new areas at random if needed (and I am pretty random, so that is good.) Though the bulk of our business is outdoor photography, we can now provide our clients with an additional experience as well as a beautiful setting to meet with potential clients for consultations or product selection. The ideas don’t stop, so much so we’re already expanding and adding to our space. More on that later though!

So now it’s here, and it’s about to be to go-to creative space in the area, do you imagine that you’ll use it for more than photography?

You nailed it Nicole, it’s a space to create. Whether that is beautiful imagery or community, our new haven is really about building things that mean something. Portrait & Wedding photography is the bulk of our business and we are expanding into commercial, specifically fashion photography but we have also created a series of workshops that we are going to hold monthly that I’ve coined “Creative Wellness” – We’ve got a wide mix of topics and speakers planned with the goal of empowering visual artists, whatever their trade to live their dream and build a career that is gratifying and successful. Something I’ve always been passionate about is speaking, teaching, mentoring and now I have the opportunity to do that in an industry I truly love. Exciting times ahead!

Our first is coming up this March 23rd and we’ve partnered with Dayton legend Andrew White of IndigoLife Media and Samantha Elder of PR In Pumps. The topic is personal branding and the struggles creatives face in breaking through the noise. You can learn more on our Facebook page here.

I’ve seen you progress as a photographer over the past year. Now that you have this space, will you focus on specific kinds of photos?

Girl, I am all over the place. I am still learning every day and frankly, I have no clue. I want to explore everything and anything I can get my hands on but I realize I also have a growth strategy for my business that needs my focus. Wedding photography is definitely on my heart though, I am inspired daily by amazing artists all around me and find so much joy in photographing them so I have definitely been zoning in on that area and will continue. But we are full service photography studio and with my schedule, existing clients and destination jobs, expansion is on the horizon. Over the next few months our goal is to grow our team to 5 photographers with diverse styles and areas of expertise.

We recently did an inspiration wedding shoot that has peaked the interest of many vendors, publications and talent. I was initially just so excited with the idea, but when we set out to bring it to life and then saw it happen because of our amazing friendors, it was surreal. We’ve build some amazing partnerships in Dayton. Something Old Dayton, Sherwood Florist, Blush Boudoir, Cake Hope & Love and many others have really helped to build our little business. Dayton is just so awesome. Where was I going with this? Oh yeah, focus. A lot is coming in the next few months as I mentioned. We are always evolving, I think you have to stay ahead in this business. We’ve been approached recently for several things like styling, wedding planning even renting our studio and we keep an eye on these requests to see where opportunity lies for the future. We want to meet the needs of various clients and so we will be launching several new products, collections and styles of photography for our portrait & wedding clients while expand further into commercial with our fashion clients. At the core of all is, a love for lifestyle photography. Images that are real, emotion that is raw and energy that is contagious – all of these being the common thread in our work, whoever the client.

So how are you bringing your biz into the business world? I know your professional background and just can’t imagine you staying away for toooo long…

Commercial photography has been a passion before I even knew I could operate a camera. In my past life, I produced multiple product shoots and was always curious about what it would be like on the other side. From styling to photographing, it has always been definitely a big interest. Last year the spark was really ignited when doing some work for Belle of Dayton, I knew when I was posing those bottles of spirits so that the light hit them just perfectly, I was going to do more of this. As I mentioned earlier, we are expanding our space and part of that will be to serve our product only clients. We’re cooking up some big ideas. There’s a hint in there.

And, girl…I know your love of community and how you build in an ability to give back to causes you care about. Tell the world how that fits in here.

At the heart of everything I do, is love for Dayton. Community is everything. When I first started on this journey I knew that I wanted to some how intertwine my passion for giving back into our business model. In August of last year with our rebrand, we share our mission to donate 10% of our session fees to Dayton organizations serving the community. We are able to help many, with our biggest giving campaign in November where we fed 100 families on Thanksgiving, providing a monetary donation that covered a full meal including Turkey to those families through the The Hope Foundation of Greater Dayton. Like many things, we are looking at this program for opportunities to broaden it as well simplify for our partners. In the meantime, we’re looking for volunteer opportunities as well event sponsorship and in kind donations requests where Goodness & Grace would be a good fit. Agencies looking to partner with us can email sayhello@goodnessandgrace.photography

What’s Next?

SO MUCH. With our opening this week and still many logistics to get through, we are excited about the next phase of this tiny but mighty business. The theme of this year, I can’t do it all. So the next few months are really going to be about growing the team, getting the word out, building our client portfolio, strengthening our brand and staying focused on community. We’ve hired consultants to help build strong product offering, expand our offerings, update our brand as well as develop a new website all with the intent of giving our clients the best experience.

Well, Shana thanks for chatting with me! All of us at DMM are so excited to watch Goodness + Grace grow!

Summit offers opportunity to grow professionally and personally

March 28, 2011 By Dayton Most Metro Leave a Comment

Updayton has opened registration for this year’s Young Creatives Summit. Since 2009, this annual event has brought hundreds of young people together to discuss and craft initiatives in response to the economic and societal issues facing Dayton. This year brings a strengthening of the core mission to give young people a say in the future of the region and changes that guarantee to keep the event fresh and exciting.

2011 Young Creatives Summit

Graphic Design by CreativeFuse

Attendees from the Summit emerge energized and equipped to take a project from concept to completion. Past projects include the street level beautification of the Wayne Avenue corridor, the establishment of DaytonMostMetro.com as the region’s online magazine and a number of other projects focused on entrepreneurism, volunteerism, active nightlife and positive Dayton stories.

The focus of the Summit is on project ideas and implementation, but even the best ideas can’t succeed without the right resources. To ensure greater success, the Summit offers professional development opportunities for attendees to discover resources, strengthen their skills, and network with key community and business leaders.

Every year, the Summit provides top notch speakers to share information on topics of interest to up-and-coming young professionals. From social media to project management to getting noticed, attendees walk away with information they can use and a new contact that may lead to their next big opportunity.

New this year, the professional development sessions have been revamped to increase attendees’ interaction with the speaker, provide opportunities to hear more than one topic and ensure all attendees, regardless of skill level, walk away with some new tips or resources. Bring plenty of business cards to share as you participate in these “best practices” conversations with experts and peers.

Here is a sneak peak of the topics and the speakers for this year’s Summit:

  • Telling Your Story – Learn how to increase visibility for your business, organization or cause from communication experts Sharon Howard, Director of Marketing and Communications of the Dayton Development Coalition and Amelia Robinson, seasoned reporter for Dayton Daily News. They’ll show you how to tell your story to the community, media and partners.
  • Social Media – Shana Douglas and Leah Moon of CultureMASH, a social media organization that assists non-profits in building awareness in the region, share the best ways to use social media tools to educate and build awareness for your cause. Sure you know Facebook and Twitter – but do you know what they can do for you?

We want your ideas

  • Demystifying Local Government – Dayton City Commissioner Nan Whaley and Director of Planning and Community Development Aaron Sorrell breakdown the steps needed to get through the “red tape” that may stall your projects. They’ll provide hints on how to work with the City for greater success and fewer headaches.
  • Project Management and Leadership – Paul Piechota, Executive Director for the Center for Competitive Change at the University of Dayton, and Kelly Geers, Director of Government Programs for the Dayton Development Coalition, provide tips on the best way to approach a project, how to manage each step along the way, and how a little early planning can save a lot of trouble-shooting later.
  • Dayton Gems – Think there’s nothing to do in Dayton – think again! Bill Pote, founder and publisher of DaytonMostMetro and Lisa Grisby, co-publisher and writer for DaytonMostMetro and founder of Dayton Dining, provide the insiders’ view of how to discover hidden gems in the region and what resources can plug you into the scene. From entrepreneurism to entertainment – Dayton has something for everyone.
  • The Greater Downtown Dayton Plan – Here Dayton Grows Again! Sandy Gudorf, Executive Director for the Downtown Dayton Partnership and Shelley Dickstein, Assistant City Manager for the City of Dayton, provide updates on the three year community initiative that is “the Plan” for the city. Learn more about what’s happening in your city and how young creative can make an impact.

Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to grow professionally and personally. More details can be found by clicking here. If one moment can change everything, one will one afternoon do? Find out on April 15!

Friday, October 8: The Dayton Urban League Young Professionals present YP at Play at Therapy Cafe.  This monthly event is gaining in popularity as grown-ups get together to play kids’ games.
Friday, October 8: The Young Republicans of Montgomery County enjoy a social night out at the Melting Pot.  More information here.

Monday, October 11: The Young Republicans host their regular monthly meeting at the Buffalo Wild Wings in Town and Country.
Wednesday, October 13: JumpstART (aka the Culture Works Associate Board) is hosting an open meeting to welcome new associate board members and answer questions for anyone interested.  At the Culture Works offices at 5:30 PM
Wednesday, October 13: HYPE hosts an informal lunch to welcome new members, highlight upcoming events, and have a good time.  Join them at Night Sky in Troy at Noon.
Wednesday, October 13: updayton hosts their second annual Candidates Night at the Cannery Art and Design Center.  Last year, this was one of the most popular candidates forums hosted by the League of Women Voters.  Again they’ll challenge candidates with questions about revitalization, jobs, and budget issues as they relate to young people.  6 PM.
Thursday, October 14: Generation Dayton hosts Thirsty Thursday at Sidebar at 5:30 PM – free to attend, cash bar.
Thursday, October 14: The Archdiocese of Cincinnati presents Theology on Tap at the Oregon Express in the Oregon District.  Join with other singles and couples in their 20s and 30s to discuss topics.  7:30-9PM
Saturday, October 16: JumpstART invites you to Jump into Dance with the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company.  Discounted tickets for the show and a fantastic afterparty at Sidebar.

Tuesday, October 19: Generation Dayton continues their monthly Business and Breakfast series with grub at First Watch in Town and Country at 7 AM.
Tuesday, October 19: The Dayton Creative Syndicate, the YP arm of the GDAA,  is focused on all things creative.  Now they present SummitUP – This is your chance to get the inside scoop on all things social media.
Wednesday, October 20: The Dayton Urban League YPs host their monthly meeting at 7 PM at the Urban League offices downtown.
Thursday, October 21: HYPE- the YP organization for the Northern Miami Valley invites all YPs from the region to their Third Thursday social at The Caroline in Troy.
Thursday, October 21: The Ballet Barre hosts a Happy Hour at the Wine Gallery in downtown Dayton – just a great time to get together with other arts minded YPs.
Friday, October 22: On the fourth Friday of every month, you can count on Gen D to introduce you to a great new lunch spot and throw in some networking and friends.  This month – check out Amber Rose at Noon.
Saturday, October 23: A major initiative of HYPE is service and they show it at HYPE Make a Difference Day.  Volunteer and see the major impact that people can have when they work together.

Monday, October 25: Generation Dayton has a book club!  Get your literary groove on with them at 7 PM at the Cannery – no number 2 pencils required as there are no pop quizzes.
Tuesday, October 26: Dayton Creative Syndicate invites you to get creative with pumpkin carving and join them at Harrigan’s Tavern South at 6 PM for some drinks, socializing, and pumpkin fun.
Thursday, October 28: Every Fourth Thursday, the Young AFCEAns host a social  – join them and chat them up to get the dish on communication, technology, and contractor stuff around the mysterious WPAFB.
Thursday, October 28: Generation Dayton has a hard-knocks workshop for anyone interested in entrepreneurship – “When Reality Bites” presented at The Entrepreneurs Center.  Get the inside scoop on launching your business.

So – that’s what I was able to dig up from the approximately 20 YP groups that are floating around Dayton.  If you’re already an active member in an organization specifically for people in their 20s and/or 30s, I encourage you to use the DaytonMostMetro.com online event calendar to promote your events – it makes it a whole lot easier for people to know what’s going on in the community and maybe, just maybe someone who didn’t know about a cool recreation group, 20-something group, or professional group may find that it’s a good fit.

And if you haven’t checked out one of these organizations yet – what are you waiting for?  Most have pretty small membership requirements (if “official” membership is even required) and hook you up with a lot of great people to build your social and professional contacts.  Whatever you’re looking for – there’s a YP group out there for you.
