 June 4th will be the last day that the City of Trotwood and Trotwood Madison School District will be providing bus opportunities to volunteer in the community.

Please meet us at 9am at the Trotwood Madison High School (4440 N Union Rd.) to volunteer.

We are accepting monetary donations to give out as needed or replace supplies as needed as well as physical donations. SATURDAY JUNE 1 TORNADO DONATION & VOLUNTEER UPDATE

Thank YOU to everyone who has been helping their neighbors this week, and to everyone who has been at work and unable to assist – WELCOME! You are needed!

Important things to keep in mind:

  1. There has been an outpouring of donations this week, and everyone is so grateful! However it is becoming overwhelming for many locations at this time. They need volunteers to help sort and organize supplies so they can get them to people in need. This weekend, let’s focus on volunteerism. NOTE: Donations are going to continue to be needed in weeks to come.
  2. All of Montgomery County’s water has been restored and is no longer under a boil advisory. Donations of water is not as critical as it was earlier this week. Donations are still being accepted (see below for list of locations).
  3. If you get to a location to help or donate, and they turn you away – try not to get discouraged. The outpouring of donations is a good thing, and you are serving others simply by showing up and demonstrating you care. At the very least, say “That’s OK! We can find another place in need. We care about you.” That goes a long way!
  4. Please be patient with those of us who are coordinating efforts. We are doing our best to keep up with the shifting needs and locations. If you don’t know where or what to do, keep reading below – or just get into a ravaged neighborhood and make yourself useful!

VOLUNTEERS INFO: It’s advised you bring SPF sun block, hand sanitizer, work gloves & wear sturdy shoes, regardless of the volunteer need below. Take care of yourself!

    • If you are cutting down debris – *MAKE SURE* you check with home owners before you start. Some people are still waiting on insurance adjusters to evaluate damage. Please wear closed toe shoes, good work gloves and a hat. Also bring if you have: lg garbage bags, zip ties, brooms, rakes, pruning shears, Fiskars, work tools, power tools, chain saws (with gas & oil).

The Vineyard Church (4051 Indian Ripple Road Beavercreek) is organizing a massive non denominational effort to deploy people into neighborhoods that need help. 8am registration; 8:30am orientation; 9am deployment; 4-5pm Teams return to church. **UPDATE** another group will launch at 1pm!

Old North Dayton for a neighborhood cleanup on Saturday (6/1/19), starting at 10 AM.  We will meet at the corner or St. Adalbert and Freeland.  Please bring gloves, face masks (for insulation), rakes, shovels, trash bags, pickers, and construction magnets (to pick up nails)

Tornado Relief Work Day on Saturday. We are meeting at 2550 S. Dayton Lakeview Rd. at 10am and sending people out in the community to specific neighborhoods to get to work! Anyone is welcome to come and help. We need trucks, trailers, chainsaws, bushhogs and able bodied people to go out and help clean up as much as we can!

**VOLUNTEERS!!!!!!!
-The Trotwood City School district is partnering with the City of Trotwood to send volunteers into the city’s most affected neighborhoods. Anyone interested in helping with cleanup should meet in the high school (440 N Union Rd, Trotwood, OH 45426) back parking lot starting at 9 a.m. Thursday until Saturday. Shuttle buses will run back and forth between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. into the community to provide support. If you choose to volunteer, you are asked to bring a pair of work gloves and safety glasses. The city also says if you own a chainsaw that you can safely operate yourself, those are needed as well. Buses will shuttle volunteers in and out of the areas about every 45 minutes. Volunteers may leave their car at the high school. You are also welcome to bring any non-perishable items you wish to donate to the relief effort to the high school as well. Items will be collected and transported to shelters to assist with relief efforts.

-Neighborhoods devastated in need of help / supplies: (esp chain saws, power tools, trucks, labor – also wear hard boots & safety goggles) If crews are working – don’t get in their way. Show up to one of the many the tornado hit areas with no other goal than to carry something. Bring boxes, plastic bins or trash bags to put things in, whether it’s something to throw away or something to save. Don’t just drop them off, use them. Fill them. People are trying to move, hundreds of people are trying to move out of their broken homes. They’re actively digging thru rubble trying to find things they want to salvage. Help them.

Still Time To Register For Breast Wishes 5k for Kelli

Many women we know and love have been affected by breast cancer, including Kelli James, a young mother and beloved sister, who died in the prime of her life. Her sisters, Elesha Snyder and Mandi Moore, decided to both honor their sister and help other women and families in the same situation. The founded the Breast Wishes Foundation to bring joy to those who are suffering with spa days, restaurant gift cards, yoga retreats, nutrition classes, family vacations and financial assistance for medical bills and holistic treatments that aren’t covered by insurance.
The 6th annual 5k for Kelli Run/Walk is Breast Wishes Foundation’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and is coming up this weekend, on August 18th, 2018 at the beautiful Wegerzyn Gardens Metro Park. Since Kelli loved fairies, runners are encourage to dress in their fairy best! No fairy gear? No problem! They will have tutus, wings and flower crowns at the merchandise tent.
This is run / walk 5k, so even if you’re not a runner, you can walk it and support this worthwhile local charity! Foro the competitors out there, awards to the top 3 male and female in each age group and the top 3 male and female overall. Please do consider supporting this fabulous organization!

When: August 18, 2018 at 9am 

Where: Wegerzyn Gardens Metro Park at 1301 E. Siebenthaler Avenue. The race will take place on path along the Stillwater River.

Volunteer for National Day of Service with MetroParks

One day can make a difference!

“We appreciate the support and help we receive from the community, which allows Five Rivers MetroParks to more effectively protect our region’s natural heritage,” said Yvonne Dunphe, volunteer coordinator for Five Rivers MetroParks. “Participating in Make a Difference Day is a great way for everyone to help preserve our environment while experiencing the outdoors and connecting with nature.”

Five Rivers MetroParks will participate in this year’s national Make a Difference Day from 9 am to noon on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Make a Difference Day

Community members of all ages will work at various sites throughout the Dayton area, including:

“Make a Difference Day is the perfect occasion to have an experience in the park you can feel extra good about,” said Yvonne Dunphe, MetroParks volunteer coordinator. “The weather is cooler, fall color is on full display and you get to spend the day meeting new people while helping to spruce up your favorite MetroPark.”

For those looking to volunteer as a family, Dunphe suggests Possum Creek MetroPark and Adventure Central for younger children, while older children can enjoy volunteering at Germantown MetroPark.

Now in its 25th year, Make a Difference Day is one of the largest annual single days of service nationwide. With the common goal to improve the lives of others, millions of volunteers will gather across the country and commit their time to local projects. Five Rivers MetroParks has participated in Make a Difference Day in different capacities for the past few years, and hopes to register 550 volunteers in 2017.

More information is available and registration can be completed online. Participants should wear clothes that are suitable for the weather and the activity in which they are participating. Boots or thick-soled shoes also are recommended. Supplies will be provided for activities, but individuals may wish to bring their own gloves or water to drink.

It takes nearly 2,000 volunteers to support this museum fundraiser, and we need your help – please consider volunteering at Oktoberfest!  This is their largest and most important fundraising event of the year, with proceeds directly benefiting the museum. Many volunteer opportunities are available, including admission gates, the mugs & tees booth, soft drink booths, and assisting with the ACCO Brands FamilyFest.

Volunteers Needed For Strawberry Festival

The Troy Strawberry Festival, which hosts up to 150,000 guests each June, needs volunteers to assist with load-in prior to the festival and to serve as ambassadors at multiple shuttle sites throughout the event.

Although there are pre-festival events which take place in May, the Strawberry Festival officially begins on Friday night with food and entertainment for the whole family on our beautiful Great Miami River Levee! Two full days of events follow beginning with Open Ceremonies on Prouty Plaza. From there the main action continues on the Historic Streets of Downtown Troy and along the Great Miami River Levee! Browse over 200 high quality art and craft booths. If you can make it with strawberries, you will find it at the Troy Strawberry Festival. More than 70 food booths offer everything from strawberry salsa, chocolate covered strawberries, strawberry BBQ sauce, and of course the famous strawberry donuts! The Festival is more than just a weekend of fun. It serves as a major fund-raising event for many of the area’s civic and charitable groups. Committees work year-round to prepare for the weekend when as many as 150,000 people come to Troy to take part in our festival.

You can personally impact the experience of each festival guest for our 2016 event through these positions. We’ll treat you well too! Snacks and water are provided, and load-in volunteers even earn a free T-shirt.

Masquerage Chair Named United Way’s Volunteer of the Month!

servletLauren Williams LIVES UNITED by “using my energy in a positive way in our community.”  Lauren volunteers with AIDS Resource Center Ohio and is the chair of 2015’s Masquerage and  United Way of the Greater Dayton Area’s Volunteer Connection is proud to have Lauren as October’s Volunteer of the Month.

Lauren grew up in Centerville and graduated from Wright State University.  She is the Sales and Marketing Manager at Brookdale Senior Living, just recently celebrated her first wedding anniversary with her husband Brad and has three dogs.

She attended a Masquerage and knew she wanted to get involved witb ARC Ohio.  She has been on the associate board for four years and is a leading volunteer.  ARC activities in the run-up to Masquerage occupy several hours a week.

Lauren has volunteered since childhood.  Both of her grandmothers taught her “about the value of giving back and instilled a spirit of volunteerism.”  She says she encourages others to volunteer by “talking about my positive experience and thus encouraging them to participate in opportunities.”She has also volunteered with Alzheimer’s causes.  When not busy volunteering she enjoys reading and baking.

Volunteer To Usher At Victoria Theatre Association Events

volunteersEach season, nearly 700 volunteers from the Dayton area donate more than 60,000 hours of their time to our organization.

As a Victoria Theatre Association volunteer, you are an an active partner in the arts in downtown Dayton. You’ll meet a lot of great people, see a lot of great shows, and know that your contribution keeps the arts affordable for all.

If you’re 14-19 years old, check out the  Teen Usher program!

Volunteers primarily work as the ushers and bartenders for our performance theatres at the Victoria Theatre, Schuster Center and The Loft Theatre. Ushers are responsible for taking tickets, seating patrons, enforcing house policies, assisting patrons and answering questions. They also assist with mailings, staff fair and festival booths, and other tasks.  Volunteers are expected to attend an orientation, training sessions, and commit to working a minimum of 50 hours per year.

National Becomes Local: Longhorn Steakhouse in Moraine

We just had to tell you.  We just had to tell you about something happening in your community that you have no idea about.

As you know, 95% of our weekly Food Adventure articles feature local mom and pop establishments serving up great food.

But sometimes, there is a need to mention something that is going on at a Nationally owned restaurant.  In this case, no one is more deserving than Bob Medlin, the manager of Longhorn Steakhouse in Moraine, located at 1921 West Dorothy Lane.

We know,we know…. ” the dreaded chain restaurant,” but there is one thing you local purists can’t ignore.  It is the constant donation of resources and volunteering that Bob Medlin and his staff give to the Miami Valley.  The Big Ragu and Crew volunteer at a lot of charity events, and we notice that Bob Medlin and Longhorn Steakhouse in Moraine are involved in almost every charity group that we support.  The staff believes in not only serving quality affordable food, but they go an extra step in volunteering for many charitable organizations.

Food Adventures joined forces with Longhorn Steakhouse Moraine, to support the March of Dimes Walk for Babies.  We ate at their pancake breakfasts that supported the Sandy Hook Elementary victims, and the Mobley Family who endured terrible losses in a local fire.  The Big Ragu and Crew have also run into the Longhorn staff at the annual AMBUCS Chili cookoff, that benefits Dayton citizens with various disabilities, by providing them equipment to become more mobile.

After talking with the management and the staff, we realized, this was just the tip of the iceberg.   Just some of the charities helped by Longhorn Steakhouse in Moraine, either directly or indirectly through volunteering staff, or donating resources, food or supplies, are the following organizations:

Relay for Life Charities from American Cancer Society– pancake breakfasts to raise money

These are just some charities off the top of the staff’s heads.  The thing is, they don’t toot their own horn, they just help out the community in so many ways.  And it is contagious.  As we talked to the staff, we realize they all want to help and get involved, because they see how their company has affected lives for the positive.

And so many lives have been affected by the Longhorn Steakhouse staff.  We have yet to mention donations to local elementary schools, or events for the Fairmont track  football, basketball , and volleyball teams!  They even had volunteers help cater a prom dinner.

Longhorn Steakhouse of Moraine events have benefited local pet adoption companies and local cancer survivors. There have been Dayton Demonz hockey team charity work, volunteer staff car washes for charities.   Bob Medlin and his co-workers have helped donatefor benefits for cystic fibrosis and leukemia.  They have helped local feeding centers, local food banks, and helped organize local clothing donations.

Although they have a full staff supporting and volunteering for many of these events, there are 3 managers at Longhorn who have instilled and lead this philanthropist philosophy with their employees.   The first person we have already mentioned, is manager Bob Medlin.  The other two, are managing partner Jordan Frank and Rita Hayworth, fundraising specialist.   Together they provide a great, caring work atmosphere of giving back to the community.

So the next time you are in the mood for some steakhouse type food, you may want to mosey on over to the Longhorn Steakhouse in Moraine and keep paying it forward.  You may even get to see Bob Medlin, and tell him thank you for their community support.  Let him know you saw his charity work “shout out” on Food Adventures.  Bob and his staff are very humble, and the staff never boasts about their charity work.  They participate enthusiastically and take pride in helping various needs in the Dayton area.  We are grateful for fellow citizens like this and want them to know, we greatly appreciate all you do.  Thanks for making a local difference with a national company.

Can You Take A 3 hour Shift for Homefull’s Phone-A-Thon?

64Homefull is hosting a Phone-A-Thon on June 24, 25 and 26, and they need your help!  Homefull, formerly The Other Place, was founded in 1988 in Dayton, Ohio and has grown to meet the challenging needs of our community in service to homeless persons. They have a bold vision of “a community where there is no homelessness” and a mission “to work to end homelessness by providing housing, services, advocacy and education.” Homefull offers a comprehensive continuum of care and services to those who are at risk of homelessness, to those who are currently homeless and to those who are formerly homeless. Their programs and services include street outreach, prevention and diversion, Gateway shelter assessment and case management, social enterprise Micro-Farm & Landscaping, housing search and placement, rapid rehousing, and supportive services in transitional and permanent housing.

Homefull is requesting you volunteer one 3 hour shift  to help Homefull connect with donors in a fun, energetic atmosphere! Training is provided on site the evening(s) you volunteer. Make a HUGE impact in helping to end homelessness right here in Dayton, Ohio! Take your pick of three shifts: Tuesday 6/24, Wednesday 6/25 and/or Thursday 6/26 from 6:30 pm-9:00 pm at our office. Celebrate Earth Day With Adopt-A-Park

Five Rivers MetroparksGo green by protecting and cleaning green spaces in honor of Earth Day: Join Five Rivers MetroParks’ 27th annual Adopt-A-Park event from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 19. Register online by April 7 at www.metroparks.org/adopt.

A diverse crew of volunteers of all ages, accessibility levels and backgrounds join forces during this event to make our parks and river corridors healthier, more attractive and friendlier places to visit. Volunteers will participate in projects aimed at improving the environment at more than two dozen sites throughout the Dayton area.

Volunteers will receive a free T-shirt and lunch at RiverScape MetroPark, and project supplies will be provided. Groups are encouraged to register early to ensure space at available sites.

“With this year’s high water and snow, cleanup along our rivers and bikeways will be especially important,” said Kevin Kepler, volunteer services manager for Five Rivers MetroParks. “We’ve seen some incredible wildlife during past clean ups, including beavers, otters, red fox and numerous interesting birds. You never know what you’re going to come across.”

 In addition to cleanup, volunteers will plant trees, prepare garden beds, remove invasive species and paint. This year’s Adopt-A-Park volunteers also will help with conservation efforts to restore our forests by checking on tree seedlings that have been planted in past years, repairing protective tubes and making sure the seedlings are growing as planned.

“Environmental stewardship is a top of priority at Five Rivers MetroParks,” Kepler said. “We do this work year-round to help protect our environment, and the Adopt-A-Park volunteers help us create cleaner parks and natural spaces. Plus, it’s a great way to get back outside after winter, celebrate Earth Day and welcome spring.”

In 2013, more than 2,000 people volunteered at 37 sites located throughout Montgomery County to remove trash and invasive species, maintain trails, and prepare garden beds. Roughly 28,000 pounds of litter and 300 tires were removed; 13,500 pounds of recyclable materials were collected; and 6,000 trees were planted.

Together We Are Greater…Dayton

Together, individuals and communities across the region create Greater Dayton. And through working together, we are a greater Dayton. It’s simple. It’s true. And now, that spirit of volunteerism – those people who make Dayton greater – get a moment in the limelight. The Dayton Foundation invites individuals and groups to connect right now through their newest social media campaign.

Last month, The Dayton Foundation launched the “Together we are Greater…Dayton” social media campaign on the Foundation’s Facebook and Twitter accounts to increase engagement and dialogue with fans about the philanthropic and leadership efforts happening in the Dayton Region.

The campaign encourages Dayton-area residents to show how they are making Dayton greater. Fans on the Foundation’s social media pages were asked to share photos and short stories about how their volunteer activities or charitable support is helping to make a difference in the community. Photos get uploaded to the Foundation’s “Together we are Greater…Dayton” Tumblr account.

 

The Dayton Region has a long history of individuals helping others in times of need. It is this passion and commitment of everyone working and participating together that helps make Greater Dayton great. This was celebrated at The Dayton Foundation’s annual meeting November 6 with highlights demonstrating the camaraderie of donors, not-for-profits, volunteer and the community.

Play for Change in the Miami Valley

A CALL FOR MUSICIANS, FILMMAKERS, AND VOLUNTEERS!

Wright State University calls for community partners, musicians, filmmakers and volunteers to participate in the worldwide music initiative, “Playing for Change.”

A dedicated film crew crosses the globe to seek music’s most creative talent. Wright State University will add the voice of the Miami Valley to this growing initiative. The Miami Valley Playing for Change project is in need of local filmmakers, musicians, and other volunteers to participate in creating a video, featuring a blend of positive songs to uplift and showcase our region. Like the video above – a diverse collection of musicians of all different backgrounds, genres and instruments are invited to share their talents on a song that will become greater than the sum of its parts.

Heading up the program is Dr. Robert J. Sweeney, Executive Vice President for Planning at Wright State University. Sweeney was drawn to this project based on the great cultural impact it has demonstrated; the music program is bringing together communities that would have never otherwise worked together and crossing barriers across the globe. Regarding why he’s bringing it to the Miami Valley, he says, “We had Mark Johnson speak as a part of our Presidential Lecture Series and the response from the community to his message was overwhelming.  I know our musicians, filmmakers and community of volunteers rival any region in the world.”

Musicians may be soloists or bands/groups/choirs that use voice and/or instruments; the project seeks to highlight many different genres of locally connected musicians. Participating bands/artists will perform one or more of the featured songs while filmmakers shoot the performances at locations throughout the Miami Valley between July 14 and August 3.

The featured songs include:

“Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow” by Fleetwood Mac

“I Can See Clearly Now” by Johnny Nash

“We Are” by Sweet Honey in the Rock

The final product will be a video montage of the performances uploaded early September for a worldwide audience with a possible special reception to feature the songs/videos.

Dayton Fashion Week Seeks Volunteers

Recently it seems like no matter where I go and no matter what I do, I run into somebody who expresses their excitement or has questions about Dayton Fashion Week– from my close friends to random strangers who recognize me from my picture on this blog.  The word has gotten out and I’m pretty comfortable saying that the City of Dayton is ready to take its place as the Fashion Capital of the Midwest!!

When I first heard about Dayton Fashion Week in September and signed up to help last year, I naively thought this was just going to be a fun little fashion show that will give people something to do–BOY WAS I WRONG!!  Dayton Fashion Week has become a week long International Production that has grown beyond words in the past couple of weeks!  From Fashion Politque Magazine out of London, England naming us a “must see” Fashion Event of 2012, to our Cover Model Contest gaining national attention by Fashion Faces Magazine out of Phoenix, AZ.  We’ve had Fashion Bloggers from New York to L.A. seek out information and request press passes, and we’ve even had the head of several International Modeling Agencies reach out to support us and we are in talks of offering a few local models affiliated with DFW contracts.  More importantly on the local front the Downtown Dayton Partnership and Dayton Most Metro have played major roles in helping us get the word out, we’ve appeared on FOX 45 In The Morning twice, this Wednesday we will be appearing on Living Dayton on Channel 2 at noon, and Wednesday evening we will be featured on WYSO 91.3 FM Kaleidoscope Hosted By Juliet Fromholt and we CAN NOT THANK YOU ALL ENOUGH FOR ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT!

So to say that Dayton Fashion Week is just a “fashion show” would be an understatement because we have gone beyond just an event it’s officially a movement!!  Dayton Fashion Week has grown and like every great movement, we are looking for a few good leaders, supporting staff, and volunteers to add to our already talented team.  In July Dayton Fashion Week will be launching a quarterly print Fashion and Lifestyle Magazine; we are looking for writers, editors, and a sales and marketing team.

This event represents what the cutting edge fashion industry is all about and will be a great experience for anyone interested in a career in events, fashion, media, or marketing. There is a volunteer job for everyone and their roles will include:

  • Runway Venue Preparation
  • Designer and Guest Ushers
  • Backstage Assistance and Set Up
  • Assemble Gift Bags and Press Kits
  • Help maintain the main event Information Desk
  • Assist in the Volunteer Center
  • Various other tasks for the Dayton Fashion Week Staff
