Dayton Hits The Jackpot With Wahlburgers

December 28, 2022 By Nikki Nett

***Teeny tiny disclaimer – if you’re here to read a hard hitting, unbiased, objective review dripping with journalistic seriousness, maybe this ain’t it. Maybe this is something with more exclamation marks. Maybe this is written with all the excitement of a once middle school girl who’s bedroom was plastered with posters of NKOTB and who was quite literally on a boat with Donnie Wahlberg for the NKOTB cruise the day it was announced that Hollywood Racino in Dayton would be getting a Wahlburgers. Maybe there was screaming. And maybe we all need something to be this giddy over when it’s so dang cold and gross outside.

Beginning at 11:00 am on Thursday, December 29, the Hollywood Gaming Dayton Raceway will now have “The Right Stuff”!  Regular hours will be 11am – 9pm Wed, Thurs & Sun, and 11am – 11pm on Friday and Saturday.
The latest location for a Wahlburgers, made popular by the A&E reality tv show with the same name, and even more popular because of the three brothers that started it. Donnie Wahlberg of New Kids On The Block (*cue screaming and jumping up and down) and now Blue Bloods, Marky Mark Wahlberg who’s good vibrations turned into a film career, and Paul Wahlburg who took his love of cooking for the family and brought it to the public. They have done this in locations all across the country with humor, hype, and at the heart of it all, honoring their mother Alma.
Wahlburgers sign and menu boards inside Hollywood Gaming Dayton Raceway
Paying homage to their hardscrabble roots in Dorchester, MA, the center of their menu is the “Our Burger” complete with “Government Cheese”. It’s a solid choice, a great classic burger that checks all the boxes. To answer the next question people always have, I pulled this straight from the Wahlburgers website: Government Cheese? “Today at Wahlburgers, we use a premium American cheese to top our burgers, but give a wink and a nod to where we came from. Growing up in a house with 9 kids, things were tight. Back then, blocks of cheese, known as “government cheese”, were given out to folks who needed a hand up. And we were so thankful.”
You can fancy up your burger with Donnie’s choice:

BBQ BACON
beef burger, white cheddar, bacon, fresh jalapeños, BBQ sauce & avocado

You can even go full Hollywood with Mark’s choice:

THE IMPOSSIBLE BURGER
plant-based patty, smoked cheddar, lettuce, caramelized onions, housemade chili spiced tomatoes & Paul’s signature Wahl Sauce

While the Dayton location doesn’t have the larger menu that other Wahlburgers have, you are also able to order chicken sandwiches (yep, even Jenn’s chicken!), salads, and of course, Alma’s favorite chili. Wash it down with one of their famous milkshakes or a Wahlbrewski.
No matter what you choose, you’ve gotta grab some tater tots and Wahl Sauce. It just makes sense.

Personally, I have only been to the Racino once for an event, but knowing this is so close, I bet that changes. Maybe this will bring a whole new demographic to “Hang Tough” at the slot machines? After all, we did say “I’ll Be Loving (Them) Forever”. I know I’m down to grab some friends and have a “Block Party” there. Ok, Ok, I’ll stop now!

***One detail to note for other local Blockheads that are familiar with the layout and photo ops at various Wahlburgers locations (like St. Charles, IL), being inside a casino there are certain photography restrictions, but fear not! They have created a specific area by the merch for all of our selfie-ing just like our favorite Selfie King himself – Donnie! Would you expect anything less?
TL;DR for people who care about none of the above: Good burgers, first floor of casino, back left corner, get the tots & Wahl sauce with anything you order, there weren’t actually that many exclamation marks used here.

Lularoe Clothes Dayton After Tornadoes

July 29, 2019 By Nikki Nett

Approximately 20 local LuLaRoe boutique owners, in coordination with nonprofit partner New Path Outreach, are gearing up to distribute 5,000 brand new dresses, skirts, tops, and leggings to women affected by Dayton’s Memorial Day tornado outbreak. Women of all ages, shapes and sizes are invited to participate in a special clothing giveaway scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on July 29 at The Point Choice Food Pantry, located at 506 East Main Street in Trotwood. Event details are available at https://tinyurl.com/lularoelovesdayton.

Free clothing for women impacted by the Dayton area tornadoes

All women affected by the Memorial Day tornado outbreak, particularly those in Trotwood and surrounding Montgomery, Miami and Greene County communities, are invited to attend this event. Sizes XXS to 3XL will be available, and all items are brand new with tags. This event is made possible through a generous donation from California-based clothing manufacturer LuLaRoe, and all guests will enjoy a personal shopping experience thanks to local LuLaRoe boutique owners.

Additionally, Kosins Tents & Events is transporting all donated clothing to the event location, free of charge.

While each LuLaRoe boutique is independently owned and operated, local LuLaRoe retailer and national top seller Nicolette Winner says giving back and community are part of LuLaRoe’s culture. “The best part of owning my own boutique is helping women of all shapes, sizes and ages feel as beautiful as I already know they are. My friends and I just want local women to feel confident as they face the challenges of rebuilding that lie ahead,” she says. “They need to know they are loved.”

“We appreciate the generosity of LuLaRoe and their independent retailers,” says Executive Director William Lutz of New Path Outreach. “Partnerships like these allow us to help those that really need our assistance in new ways.”

New Path is a faith-based nonprofit organization providing charitable services to residents in Miami County and portions of Montgomery County, including Trotwood and Harrison Township. You can learn more about the organization by visiting its website at www.newpathserves.org.

The mission of LuLaRoe is to create freedom, serve others, and strengthen families through fashion. LuLaRoe is proud of the impact Independent Fashion Retailers are making in their communities. Since the inception of the company’s Community Support Incentive, which encourages retailers to support causes in their own communities, LuLaRoe has donated over $7 million to organizations around the country. Dave Chappelle brings his Juke Joint back to Yellow Springs April 20 & 21

The hottest most secretive ticket in town is back!

Once again, Dave Chappelle is bringing his Juke Joint to Yellow Springs. With DJ D-Nice on the 1’s and 2’s, and Fred Yonnet & The Band With No Name keeping the music going all night, this is a party you don’t want to miss.

Let’s be real here, it will be a mad rush to get the tickets as soon as they go on sale so I don’t really want to tell you what a cool experience it is. But it is. It’s previously been LEGEND-ary, we’ve sang along to Lyzel in E Flat, and wondered aloud if we could kick it (yes, we can). I’m not going to tell you about the card trick that David Blaine did to mess with my head while we were waiting in line for the food truck. I’m just not sharing all that info, or maybe I will on Monday after I have my tickets. I’m also not enthusiastically telling you about the Prince tribute planned for this year. Nope. Not doing it.

Please check out the DMM calendar to see all the cool things you don’t want to miss that will keep you very busy when tickets go on sale this Sunday at 6pm.

Game. Blouses.

“The Voice” Contestant and Ohio Native Chris Jamison to Perform In Dayton

Singer/ songwriter and “The Voice” alumnus Chris Jamison will bring his brand of Midwestern pop-soul to the Miami Valley this Wednesday, April 25, at Top of the Market.

Jamison honed his chops in musical theater and the Columbus, Ohio bar scene in his younger years.  Those developmental years paid off, when, in 2014, he auditioned for NBC’s “The Voice”, and Jamison made it onto the show as a contestant on Adam Levine’s team.  He would ultimately finish third but, “Voice” judge and superstar producer/singer Pharrell Williams had high praise for him, saying: “Chris Jamison to me was nothing short of magical!”

Jamison would go on to be one of “The Voice’s” best-selling contestants after his exit from the show. His debut single “Velvet” nearly sold 80,000 digital downloads in one week, and it topped out at over 400,000 total sales.  Jamison’s debut EP, “I Am Chris Jamison”, which was released last August, shot to #5 on the iTunes Albums charts.

You will be able to experience the magic of Jamison at 5pm, at Top of the Market, 32 Webster St, Dayton, OH 45402. Doors will open at 5pm, and ticket buyers are welcome to arrive early for the buffet dinner. For more info, go here. Or, call 937.224.3663.

Your Mother Lied

January 3, 2018 By Nikki Nett

Yes, you CAN eat the cookie dough!

We’ve all been there. You’re ready to bake 2 dozen cookies, so you assemble the ingredients. You get to stirring. The dough forms. You take a taste. Then 2. Then 27. You’ve got enough left to make 6 small cookies, are on a sugar high but possibly ready to be sick because you’re full.

Then it happens.

You hear the voice of your mom, grandma, or auntie in the back of your head. “Don’t eat raw dough, you’ll be sick!”

But, you can. You really can!

What dreams are made of at Cake Hope & Love

Cake, Hope & Love to the rescue!

Beginning this week, you can purchase ready to eat cookie dough at the cutest lil cake shop in Beavercreek. CH&L will be offering cookie dough Fridays & Saturdays only in the beginning. If the demand is there, they will happily add more days.

YOU GUYS! ARE YOU READING THIS? YOU CAN BUY COOKIE DOUGH THAT IS MADE FOR EATING!

Ok, so I may have screamed from excitement, but I calmed down enough to ask Shannon what made her put this voodoo in our lives inspired to create this concoction.

I saw the shop Do in New York & I knew this was something Dayton would love! Plus, who doesn’t love cookie dough?! I’m so excited about this new sweet!

Yep, Shannon, we all are. We. All. Are.

Sprinkles & Funfetti!

Yay for Dayton!

Needless to say, we’re pretty excited to try these new treats. They fit right into our New Year’s Resolution of “doing what we want because we are grown-ups”. It’s pretty great knowing this adorable little bakery is right in our backyard, just changing the culture of crave-worthy treats on a regular basis. No ticket to New York required.

More Space For Your Space

October 18, 2017 By Nikki Nett

Downtown Space

There was a time when everyone wanted to leave the city center and head to the ‘burbs.

And now…we are seeing the opposite.

If you’re familiar with the downtown area, you already know that there is an abundance of new residential options. The streets are alive with the buzz of new downtown dwellers, and on most Saturdays, you’re guaranteed to see a moving truck or two.

While the new developers have done a fantastic job of building with the closet space we have all grown accustomed to, sometimes you really want to downsize – but maybe not ditch EVERYthing.

But what about all this extra “stuff”?

Thus begins the hunt for a storage unit. Sounds the opposite of sexy and cool, doesn’t it? The literal opposite.

This new need has been seen and a solution now exists! Urban Indoor Storage has recently opened at the edge of Tech Town at 804 E. Monument Ave.

With units ranging from a 5X5 closet space (perfect for those seasonal items) to large 10X17 (yep, you can fit a small house worth of stuff in there) it’s likely there is a good spot for you to store your extra stuff.

The owners of The 804 are proud to offer this new amenity to the downtown and surrounding communities. Urban Indoor Storage is a local, veteran owned business offering Veteran and Military discounts.

Anchored in the strength of a concrete warehouse in Tech Town, Urban Indoor Storage is creating storage solutions for those moving into downtown. Whether business or personal, we provide that extra space you need for the things you don’t need every day. Less clutter, more growth.

You can find out more by calling 937.999.1319, going to urbanindoorstorage.com,  and finding them on Facebook here.

Flip Your City, Flip Your Life

June 7, 2017 By Nikki Nett

Live here, work here, play here.

And Invest here?

That’s the goal of Real Estate U

Headquartered in Beavercreek, Real Estate U is a nationally recognized Real Estate training company. The owners, Bonnie and John Cochran, lifelong residents of the area, are taking the knowledge from their online products and getting hands on with local Real Estate investors…and those who want to be.

rei class

John Cochran gives tips and systems to new Real Estate Investors

The Miami Valley is one of the most affordable areas in the country for Real Estate and that’s a blessing and a curse. Yes, it’s affordable to live here, but it also makes us a target. We’ve all seen the ads for “house flipping classes” where you visit a ballroom in a hotel, hear the spiel and run to the back of the room for a chance to buy a few spots in a class. It may start out as $97, but it quickly turns into thousands. And who does that go to? A salesman who flies in for the day, and is gone once your payment is in hand.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. The folks over at REU live by the “talk about it, be about it” mantra. They are taking what they have learned in a few decades in the business and sharing it with the community for free. FOR FREE. Tried and true lessons learned in THIS MARKET, Dayton and surrounding areas, with partners equally as familiar with the Gem City.

Who is this for?

Veterans – were you a lifer? One and done? Either way, you have the attention to detail, honor and commitment to successfully use the tools given to you. REU has your second career all lined up.

Newbies -You want to buy the block,  you watch a lot of HGTV and it really seems like something you could do, right? Don’t run willy nilly into buying up properties – they’ll show you the ones worth looking for and how to find them.

Experienced investors – you’ve flipped a few houses, maybe won, maybe lost, but you know the process. Real Estate U will hand you best practices and proven systems to grow your business with no guesswork.

Contractors – you’re already doing the work why not keep it all in house?

SAHMs – you could pay a fee to sell a product for a commission (we all love leggings and want to lose weight) OR you can take the same amount of time (about 10 hours a week) and create serious generational wealth without having to recruit.

The entrepreneurial spirit, the “I can’t even deal with the college profs”, the young and hungry and live-by-my-own-rules crew – you make your own schedule and dictate your own income. Time freedom which leads to financial freedom is right at your fingertips.

And yes, the “I’m so over this 9 to 5” group. We see you and we want you to know there is life beyond the breakroom. (but grab that snackpack of Little Debbies from the vending machine on your way out!)

So, mark your calendars for June 15. The staff at Real Estate U is creating a workshop / networking group experience that you’ll want to attend.

Imagine a setting where the curious could interact with the experienced. Where they take stock of everyone’s unique abilities and allow them to shine. Somewhere that REAL ideas, REAL methods, REAL proven systems were implemented in REAL TIME – with everyone leaving knowing something new and making some money along the way.

And everyone there is on the path to becoming a successful Real Estate investor.

  • You don’t need money to invest.
  • You don’t need good credit.
  • You don’t need to know a single thing about how to flip a house.
  • You just need to want to learn. That’s it.

Priceless and also price-less. Real Estate U is putting this together in Dayton for free.

Oh my Goodness…and Grace!

March 3, 2017 By Nikki Nett

Sometimes, you stumble upon a Dayton Gem and can’t believe you never knew it was there. And sometimes, you trek through a way too cool old building to find a sunny little space full of awesome. Armed with a bottle of Pinot Grigio and some fancy schmancy plastic cups, I recently did just that.

Tucked away in the up and coming Davis-Linden building, you’ll find the just-barely-revealed-to-the-public Goodness and Grace Photography Studio. As my velvet heels made their way up the stairs to this new space, I couldn’t help but ooh and ahh over the industrial charm of the sprawling building. Once those fancy schmancy cups were full of the aforementioned Pinot, I sat down with my friend, Shana Lloyd, the Goodness & Grace owner for some girl talk and to hear about the big plans for the studio.

[Girl Talk omitted, because, duh]

Shana, this place is gorgeous. I’m guessing it was a blank canvas when you moved in, where did you find the vision to bring this to life?

Thanks! No disrespect to the Davis Linden Building, because I swoon daily walking into the warehouse but it was definitely blank and dusty. The first week of renovations was all about cleaning, sanding, spackling. I had a vision that didn’t necessary equate to warehouse chic. Don’t get me wrong, I am all about the industrial look and can’t wait to shoot in and around the building, but we wanted our place to be a little bit of magic in the center of it all.

The vision was pulled from various different sources of inspiration. Working with other portrait and commercial studios in the past, years in retail fashion marketing, I definitely knew what I loved and what I didn’t love, what I would do differently. I wanted to create a place that had all the comforts of home, with intricate details and energy I just wasn’t seeing elsewhere- energy that would inspire my clients, both portrait & commercial as well as myself. In short, I wanted to create a happy place. The new studio is really something special. We initially set out to create 3-4 separate shooting areas but then decided to create a workspace that could be used at every angle for our purposes and shooting purposes. We also have built in the flexibility to rearrange and create new areas at random if needed (and I am pretty random, so that is good.) Though the bulk of our business is outdoor photography, we can now provide our clients with an additional experience as well as a beautiful setting to meet with potential clients for consultations or product selection. The ideas don’t stop, so much so we’re already expanding and adding to our space. More on that later though!

So now it’s here, and it’s about to be to go-to creative space in the area, do you imagine that you’ll use it for more than photography?

You nailed it Nicole, it’s a space to create. Whether that is beautiful imagery or community, our new haven is really about building things that mean something. Portrait & Wedding photography is the bulk of our business and we are expanding into commercial, specifically fashion photography but we have also created a series of workshops that we are going to hold monthly that I’ve coined “Creative Wellness” – We’ve got a wide mix of topics and speakers planned with the goal of empowering visual artists, whatever their trade to live their dream and build a career that is gratifying and successful. Something I’ve always been passionate about is speaking, teaching, mentoring and now I have the opportunity to do that in an industry I truly love. Exciting times ahead!

Our first is coming up this March 23rd and we’ve partnered with Dayton legend Andrew White of IndigoLife Media and Samantha Elder of PR In Pumps. The topic is personal branding and the struggles creatives face in breaking through the noise. You can learn more on our Facebook page here.

I’ve seen you progress as a photographer over the past year. Now that you have this space, will you focus on specific kinds of photos?

Girl, I am all over the place. I am still learning every day and frankly, I have no clue. I want to explore everything and anything I can get my hands on but I realize I also have a growth strategy for my business that needs my focus. Wedding photography is definitely on my heart though, I am inspired daily by amazing artists all around me and find so much joy in photographing them so I have definitely been zoning in on that area and will continue. But we are full service photography studio and with my schedule, existing clients and destination jobs, expansion is on the horizon. Over the next few months our goal is to grow our team to 5 photographers with diverse styles and areas of expertise.

We recently did an inspiration wedding shoot that has peaked the interest of many vendors, publications and talent. I was initially just so excited with the idea, but when we set out to bring it to life and then saw it happen because of our amazing friendors, it was surreal. We’ve build some amazing partnerships in Dayton. Something Old Dayton, Sherwood Florist, Blush Boudoir, Cake Hope & Love and many others have really helped to build our little business. Dayton is just so awesome. Where was I going with this? Oh yeah, focus. A lot is coming in the next few months as I mentioned. We are always evolving, I think you have to stay ahead in this business. We’ve been approached recently for several things like styling, wedding planning even renting our studio and we keep an eye on these requests to see where opportunity lies for the future. We want to meet the needs of various clients and so we will be launching several new products, collections and styles of photography for our portrait & wedding clients while expand further into commercial with our fashion clients. At the core of all is, a love for lifestyle photography. Images that are real, emotion that is raw and energy that is contagious – all of these being the common thread in our work, whoever the client.

So how are you bringing your biz into the business world? I know your professional background and just can’t imagine you staying away for toooo long…

Commercial photography has been a passion before I even knew I could operate a camera. In my past life, I produced multiple product shoots and was always curious about what it would be like on the other side. From styling to photographing, it has always been definitely a big interest. Last year the spark was really ignited when doing some work for Belle of Dayton, I knew when I was posing those bottles of spirits so that the light hit them just perfectly, I was going to do more of this. As I mentioned earlier, we are expanding our space and part of that will be to serve our product only clients. We’re cooking up some big ideas. There’s a hint in there.

And, girl…I know your love of community and how you build in an ability to give back to causes you care about. Tell the world how that fits in here.

At the heart of everything I do, is love for Dayton. Community is everything. When I first started on this journey I knew that I wanted to some how intertwine my passion for giving back into our business model. In August of last year with our rebrand, we share our mission to donate 10% of our session fees to Dayton organizations serving the community. We are able to help many, with our biggest giving campaign in November where we fed 100 families on Thanksgiving, providing a monetary donation that covered a full meal including Turkey to those families through the The Hope Foundation of Greater Dayton. Like many things, we are looking at this program for opportunities to broaden it as well simplify for our partners. In the meantime, we’re looking for volunteer opportunities as well event sponsorship and in kind donations requests where Goodness & Grace would be a good fit. Agencies looking to partner with us can email sayhello@goodnessandgrace.photography

What’s Next?

SO MUCH. With our opening this week and still many logistics to get through, we are excited about the next phase of this tiny but mighty business. The theme of this year, I can’t do it all. So the next few months are really going to be about growing the team, getting the word out, building our client portfolio, strengthening our brand and staying focused on community. We’ve hired consultants to help build strong product offering, expand our offerings, update our brand as well as develop a new website all with the intent of giving our clients the best experience.

Well, Shana thanks for chatting with me! All of us at DMM are so excited to watch Goodness + Grace grow!

Oh No! Less WINE?!

January 10, 2017 By Nikki Nett

Sometimes you get a scoop that you are really not interested in hearing. Such is the case with a bummer of a tidbit we heard earlier this month

We had heard that Beavercreek’s Brunings Wine Cellar would be closing it’s doors in the near future. A call to the store confirmed that this evening, though an exact date has not been released.

oOwner Mike Yegerlehner  announced this morning that this weekend will be the last for the wine store.  They’ll be hosting their final round of drop in wine tastings tonight from 5-8pm and then Friday 4-8pm and the final one will be Saturday from 2-6pm.  Be sure to stop by and raise a glass and toast all the good times they provided over the years and to Mike and the staff’s next chapter.

The store is located at 2476 Commons Blvd, just blocks from the Fairfield Commons Mall and they are open Wednesday – Saturday 10am – 8pm.

Old Bank Becomes A Jazzy Joint in Miamisburg

October 22, 2016 By Nikki Nett

What do you get when you cross a history-filled but empty, old school bank with a vision for the future with a nod to the hey day of the jazz age?20161016_142407

The Blue Note Bistro and Lounge at  23 E. Ccntral Ave. in Downtown Miamisburg.

Owner Julie Delph, who you may know as the owner of Miami Valley Sports Bar, wasn’t content to just remodel that south suburb staple. She took on the task of creating a new business in historic downtown Miamisburg. Armed with an amazing shell of a building and a lot of ideas, Blue Note was born.

With a focus on live music and a jazzy ambiance, Julie + crew took on thfb_img_1477109183202e detail enriched project of creating a vibe unlike any other in the Dayton area. Dim lights, cool tones and a lot of chill creates a feeling of stepping way back in time the second you walk in the door.

With sustainability being in the forefront of design decisions, you’ll be delighted to hear the back story of some of the permanent fixtures. The marble teller stations used as partitions, the wine cellar that was the actual safe, the antique pieces of furniture you find in the “speakeasy”, and all the way down to the brass light switches in the board room that has been buried under layers of paint for decades, each and every piece was well thought out to create a unique experience for customers in 2016 and beyond.

Ok, so it looks amazing, we all agree, but what about the food & service?

Let’s cut to the chase here, the food is ridiculous. I mean ridiculous as in “I could eat here every day”, *that* kind of ridiculous. Entrees are solid, drinks are well made and happily served. Apps are a treat- yes, you really DO want your Caprese Salad fried, you do, I promise.

If you have even a fraction of a sweet tooth, order light to save room for dessert. The truffles. THE DANG http://demandware.edgesuite.net/sits_pod21/dw/image/v2/AAKG_PRD/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-godiva-piece-master-catalog/default/dwb81dad53/large/Truffle%20Max/Dark%20Chocolate%20Flight/DCFLIGHT3.jpgTRUFFLES!!! Seriously people, get the super-rich chocolatey decadence that are the Blue Note Truffles. No real words, just nom nom nom. Blue Note Bistro has the market cornered on desserts, thanks to pastry chef and general manager, Gene Bowling. If you have even the slightest  enjoyment of cheesecake on any level, get it. Get it right now. You won’t be disappointed. The last one I had was a banana-strawberry concoction that I can’t fully describe but was amazing.

Their brunch is my new favorite, hands down, but to be brutally honest, I don’t want to tell you too much because I enjoy getting in quickly.

Ok, fine. First and foremost, reservations are appreciated. It’s a small business and we all want to set them up for success, so let’s just let them know in advance if we’re bringing a group. If you can agree to that, I’ll tell you about the good stuff.

Did we agree? Great!

YOU GUYS!!! BRUNCH IS THE BEST! It’s no real secret that brunch is the best meal of the week, but we’re going to move past that obvious fact for the purpose of this story.

Blood Orange Mimosas – amazing14355052_547910875394889_3296389308184089531_n
Bloody Mary’s (extra spicy) – amazing
Their coffee (some crazy special blend, percolated the old fashioned way) – amazing
Eggs Benedict Oscar with asparagus – amazing
Quiche & Omelet of the day – yep, amazing
Biscuits & Gravy – I don’t know what the hell is in that gravy, but it’s legit the best I’ve had (though I do plan to do a Miamisburg side-by-side with Koffee Kup at a later date for confirmation)

But let’s talk about the chicken & waffles for a second. Yes, it’s trendy. Yes it’s popping up on a lot of menus lately. Yes, I know all of these things. But Blue Note is serving theirs with smoked chicken. You might not think it makes a difference but, wow. There’s this combination of the smokey & sweet that’s just… All together now… AMAZING.

I don’t even feel the slightest bit bothered by the amount of times I’ve used the word “amazing” here. Not even a little bit. It’s worthy. So worthy.

0714

The upstairs parlor.

Here’s the deal, I’ve been there a few times now and I plan to be there regularly in the future. It’s my new spot. While I understand that it may be a bit off the beaten path, it’s worth checking out. It only takes one time. Their service has been on point every time, their food & drink is top tier, the music is unlike the norm, and the general coolness of the joint can’t be matched.

I am cordially inviting you to the coolest place to hit the Miami Valley recently. Come down to the Burg and experience this little gem…

… But don’t all come at once, because I’ll elbow you for a seat at the bar (in the nicest way possible, obviously).

What Does It Mean To Invest In Community?

September 27, 2016 By Nikki Nett

unlock1So, I’ve done some research and I should probably share it with you. Look, I know it may be shocking, but hear me out.

As it turns out, binge-watching Flipping Out With Jeff Lewis, HGTV, and Rehab Addict does not make one a real estate expert. No matter how much you love those sassy Joshes from Million Dollar Listing, they may not be the best teachers of success in the real estate market, though I sure do like their parties. Tarek & Christina, Jonathan & Drew, et. al are probably not the ones to consult about real estate in the Dayton Ohio market.  There is no amount of Shark Tank that sets you up for financial security, right here, right now. Yes, I know, I am just as surprised and disappointed as you are.

Ok then, we’ve established that we’ve gotta do more than build our Pinterest boards while binge watching. Reality tv isn’t making me a professional investor, flipper or rehabber (for real, keep me away from the spackle & grout), I don’t know about the housing market, but I DO know about Dayton. I know about marketing and how that works a little differently here in the Miami Valley.  Most importantly, I know that we are protective of our communities around here.

So why the hell is any of this connected or relevant??

Frankly, I didn’t think it was until recently. I just started working with Real Estate U in Beavercreek. I’ve been up to my eyeballs in their branding, mission statements, processes, classes and more for the last few weeks. The more I am immersed in all things REU, the more I begin to understand what similar companies from out of town do.

As someone who has spent the majority of my life in the Dayton area, that pisses me off. As someone who, over the years, has been involved in all the Daytonish things, that really really pisses me off. Why, though? Because their investment in Dayton is not a long term investment in the residents of Dayton. Because they breeze in, make some promises and breeze out with our assets. Nah, no thank you.

We’ve seen the lists that Dayton appears on, and we get a little braggy when we hear that people all across the nation are talking about how affordable it is to live here. This is amazing! Right???

Wellllllll….yes and no.

Dayton is prime real estate right now. But that means more than just high income creatives moving into all the cool, historic neighborhoods. It means that investors across the country are sweeping in and buying up foreclosures. It means that Joe & Suzy Suburbs from Nebraska are looking at some of the older areas and seeing opportunities for a DIY house flip. It means that available money going into these homes, is ultimately leaving the area.

But we want to keep it here. Locally. In the Miami Valley where it can benefit our entire community. How’s THAT for Return On Investment?

Cool. So now what?

dayton-classes

If you are interested in learning about real estate investing, rehabbing, flipping, rentals, and beginning to build generational wealth, then you have to attend one of Real Estate U’s FREE Real Estate Investing classes. REU is a nationwide company headquartered here in Dayton. At their free classes, REU teaches you how to find great deals, what areas in Dayton to avoid, where the sweet spots are, and even coaches you through the day to day activities of flipping a house.

There are classes this Thursday & Friday night, and they have added 2 more classes for Saturday. I added the Eventbrite link below so you can choose your time slot.

Maybe this isn’t your thing, that’s fine, but if you know someone of any age (over 18) that would like a jump start into this market, feel free to pass this along. reu-profileEveryone is welcome, you don’t have to be a Wall Street banker to make this work for you. You just have to want to work…for you.

RSVP to this weekend’s classes by clicking here.

Find REU on Facebook by clicking here.

Double tap on the ‘Gram here.

See what the heck REU is all about here.

Gary Owen’s Reality at the Funny Bone

August 14, 2016 By Nikki Nett

Started at Talawanda now we here

gary owen from buzzfeed

Gary Owen, local-ish comedian, is about to take over the world. Ok, he’s not super local, but he grew up in the Cincy area and now calls Cincinnati home, so that counts, right? Just say yes, and let’s keep it moving.

When he’s not yelling “Who Dey!”, Gary is making people laugh. Hysterically. A lot of people, actually, and they’ve been laughing for over a decade.

You may know him as Mr. Broccoli from Daddy Day Care, Zach the barber from House of Payne, or any number of his scene stealing movie roles. Don’t act like you weren’t hoping your boyfriend was taking notes during his role as Bennett in Think Like A Man (and Think Like A Man Too), we know better. We know.

But you have to take it back a little further. After high school, Gary enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After serving on the Presidential Honor Guard, he found comedy. Being named “Funniest Serviceman in America” was only the beginning. He quickly found a huge African American fan base and was named the “Funniest Black Comedian” in San Diego. Soon he could be seen gracing the stage of BET’s ComicView, with appearances that lead him to the hosting gig.

Now the whole team’s here

etc_garyowen090614_13795358_8colNow, it’s coming full circle. Once again, Gary answered when BET called, except this time, it was for his own reality tv show.  A statement from BET reads as follows:

“Gary Owen is arguably Black America’s most beloved non-Black comic. He became part of the family as the first Caucasian man to host BET’s ComicView, and confirmed he was here to stay with his star turns in the Think Like A Man films, Ride Along and Meet The Blacks. He also starred in his own hit stand-up comedy specials including ‘I Agree With Myself,’ ‘True Story’ and the upcoming ‘I Got My Associates.’ Now, he brings his own interracial and blended family to BET in a 30-minute unscripted series that is colorful, truthful and hysterical. Gary Owen loves his wife so much, he wants to marry her again — and the path down the aisle is paved with non-stop laughter as he balances planning a wedding with raising his three rambunctious children and growing his white-hot career. ‘GARY OWEN FAMILY’ is produced by Bunim/Murray Productions. Bunim/Murray’s Gil Goldschein and Jeff Jenkins serve as executive producers along with Gary Owen, Stella Bulochnikov, Brian Sher and TIP ‘T.I.’ Harris,”

**Gary Owen Family is currently in production

Truuue Storyyy**

You can catch Gary Owen at the Dayton Funny Bone (click for tix) this week, August 16 & 17 at 7:30pm. This is a special engagement and WILL sell out, so make sure you get your tickets. I’ve seen Gary perform dozens of times and I can promise you, this ticket will be worth every cent. He’s hilarious. Oh, and make sure you smile for the cameras.

Lucky for you, Dayton Most Metro has partnered with the Dayton Funny Bone to give away a few FREE tickets! We’ll hold the contest on our Facebook page, so keep an eye out!

**if you didn’t read that header in Gary Owen’s voice, go on ahead and look for his special, titled True Story and thank me later, after your abs heal from the laugh-crying.
