THE BACK STORY: Taking place a decade after the events of 2009’s original film, Zombieland: Double Tap finds our familiar unlikely foursome of the sarcastic Wichita (Emma Stone), her now grown-up sister Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), Wichita’s rules-for-survival following Columbus (Jessie Eisenberg) and Little Rock’s would-be father figure/cowboy wannabe Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) living in bliss in the former White House. Unfortunately, Columbus’ dreams of marrying Wichita are driving her nuts and Wichita is ready to hit the road and hang out with some people her own age.


So, when Wichita and Little Rock split unexpectedly, Columbus and Tallahassee end eventually hitting the road as well – only to end up on a journey that will meet a less-than-intellectual bubbly girl named Madison (Zoey Deutsch), a guitar-playing pacifist named Berkley (Avan Jogia) and some more colorful characters that are going to make life in an era of zombies – many of which are evolving into new forms – quite interesting … If they survive.
THE REVIEW: Sometimes, a movie gets a sequel right  year or two after the original’s release and it feels completely unnecessary, like an absolute money grab made just because (see Hangover II and III). Sometimes, a sequel is made years if not decades after the original and it seems like it was just made for the fans but offers nothing really special to justify it needing to exist (too many to name).Zombieland: Double Tap is neither of those things; what it is, however, is a very funny film that honors the original and will satisfy fans old and new alike.

Double Tap does everything the original does with enhancements for round two: Have plenty of zinging jokes (Harrelson is almost like Samuel L. Jackson’s bald Caucasian brother both sarcasm and language wise), plenty of surprises (just wait till you see what they do with two characters … Also stay through the credits), character development/evolution and a general sense of fun while crafting a story that flows as it should in a completely absurd world. Whereas the public may be suffering zombie fatigue these days (we KNOW who to blame for that), Double Tap adds a bit of refreshing by focusing on its comedic elements without the characters themselves being silly. That allows the characters to be relatable, interesting and entertaining.

Of course, re-teaming the original cast with their original director in Ruben Fleischer helps to deliver the perfect mix of zany comedy with well-paced, reasonable action sequences to help the story progress. Double Tap is geared towards keeping the original film’s fans happy, but opens itself up to new fans with its irreverence. It’s bawdy, rowdy but balanced with its own unique (dare-I-say sweet?) qualities to deliver laughs from the literal opening title card to the credits.

You’d have to be a zombie not to like it.

But while the world saw a battle between a budding tennis star and a self-proclaimed male chauvinist pig, there was far more going on behind the scenes than meets the eye. For while Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) was battling what she saw as an unfair payscale for she and her fellow female players, she also was dealing with coming to terms with a budding “forbidden” love with hair dresser Marilyn Bennett (Andrea Riseborough) … Despite being married to her husband Larry (Austin Stowell).


Meanwhile, while living off the glory of his days as a former champion tennis player, 55 year-old Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) is trying to be a good husband to his wife Priscilla (Elisabeth Shue). Unfortunately, his old gambling demons are quite alive and well as is his desire to regain the spotlight. This, of course, leads him to dream up an idea that will be as much spectacle as it is sport: a “battle of the sexes” between the top women’s player in the world and himself. 


What results, however, will be a battle that expands way beyond a simple tennis match. 

WHO WILL LIKE THIS FILM THE MOST? Emma Stone fans; Sarah Silverman fans; tennis historians; the LGBTQ community; 

WHO WON’T (OR SHOULDN’T) LIKE THIS MOVIE? Trump supporters; anti-LGBTQ supporters and the religious right; people who wish the film would dive deeper into the aftermath of King’s life following the event and the struggles she faced  

SO, IS IT GOOD, BAD OR ABSOLUTELY AWFUL? Some biopics go through painstaking detail to explore every aspect of its subjects’ lives; some present the most-glossed over, slapdash/mediocre puff pieces that fail to capture what made their subject matter.

Battle of the Sexes is neither of those things; instead, it is a film that simply attempts to showcase some aspects of its two lead characters in great stylish detail while at the same time, humanizing them while being very selective in displaying judgment of their actions. It’s really an ingenious trick on the part of co-directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Feris; there are no over-the-top dramatics, there are no true villains as much as there are people representing the ideals of the time from a very understandable (given the times) mindset. Then again, Margaret Court hasn’t exactly softened her stance on King’s life in her advance years, Bennett and King had a very public struggle that’s left out of the film and Stowell’s level-headed, let-me-do-what’s-best-for-the-woman-I-love-despite-our-own-turmoil may not exactly have been as it plays out on screen. 


Yes, the movie does take a few liberties with the actual facts, it does stick a mostly factual approach driven by a very up-to-the-task Stone. Stone captures King’s legendary competitiveness, shyness and desire to simply make things better for other women and Carell – who’s character almost becomes a tragic figure in a very Hollywood way before getting a very Hollywood moment at the end of the film – bring a great bit of levity to the whole scene as Riggs while Silverman is great as King’s tennis tour promoter/manager Gladys. (Think of a character fresh from The Carol Burnett Show or Rhoda living it up in sassy, glorious fashion while chain-smoking herself to death and you’ve got her character down pat.) Riseborough comes off as little more than a spacey, new-age chick that is everything King isn’t, but it plays well enough that it doesn’t feel as gimmicky/out-of-place as it might sound on paper. Throw in a “perfect for the current times even though the setting is the early 1970s” quote by a perfectly used Alan Cumming and the film hits enough beats to balance things out. 


Perhaps one day, the balance King fought for won’t need a movie to remind the world of how far it’s come.

TIFF 2017 – Day #4

Hello Everyone.

I just got in from a very full day.  I left the condo at 7:45am and returned at 1:45am.  I saw 4 films and countless celebrities…ranging from Emma Stone and Steve Carell to Judi Dench…and then several folks at a Fox Searchlight party including Nicholas Hoult, Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, Sarah Silverman, James McAvoy, and more.

The first film I saw today was a highly anticipated film (in some circles) from auteur Darren Aronofsky (director of BLACK SWAN).  It’s called MOTHER!, and I absolutely loathed it.  Though Aronofsky is a master craftsman, I’m simply not interested in his stories.  I often find his metaphors rather obtuse, and in the case of this film, the violence and brutality in the third act is just too much.  This is on the bottom of the list for me so far this year.

I cleansed the palette with JANE, a new documentary about Jane Goodall directed by Brett Morgen (director of THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE).  This new film is largely constructed from footage that was recently discovered (thought to have been lost) that was shot in the 1960’s by renowned National Geographic photographer Hugo van Lawick.  With a tremendous score by Philip Glass, the film is a love story and a gorgeous portrait of Goodall’s early monumental work with chimpanzees.  To make it extra special, Goodall was in attendance, and seeing her speak has been a highlight of the festival.  She’s so inspiring and commands attention through her passion, grace and eloquence. When she was approached to be a part of this documentary, she said “Not again,” but agreed nonetheless – and she said it’s been one of the best experiences of recounting her work. VICTORIA & ABDUL, the new film by Stephen Frears, was next on the list.  And it didn’t disappoint.  (Fears has had an incredible career.  From MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDERETTE to DANGEROUS LIAISONS to THE GRIFTERS to MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS to PHILOMENA – many of his films are quite special to me.) This elegant period piece is not at all stuffy or staid, it’s actually quite funny and charming, and the chemistry between Dench and Fazel is magic.  This is a story about Queen Victoria’s later years and how she befriended an Indian man who was initially only intended to present her with a special gift from India.  This true story, which was supposed to have been wiped from the history books by Victoria’s son – King Edward VII, was discovered several years ago by author Shrabani Basu. I know that our audiences are going to love this film when it opens on October 6.  Extra special…Dench and many others were in attendance for a Q&A.

BATTLE OF THE SEXES was my final film of the day (though the after-party was something special too).  Directed by Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris (directors of LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE), this film is so much more than the shenanigans of Steve Carell featured in the trailer.  Based on the true story of Billie Jean King and her famous match with Bobby Riggs, we actually end up getting a lot of King’s personal struggle to live her own truth.  With a strong screenplay and strong performances across the board, I think we’ll do well with this film when it opens on Sept. 29 (this date just got bumped up over the weekend).  Extra special…Billie Jean King, Emma Stone, Steve Carell, Sarah Silverman, the directors and many others were in attendance for a Q&A.

After my final screening, I went to Fox Searchlight’s party that was held to celebrate the three films playing at the festival – BATTLE OF THE SEXES, THE SHAPE OF WATER and THREE BILLBOARDS.  This was the party to be at last night.  The cocktails and food were spectacular, and everywhere you turned, stars were everywhere – from Stone and Silverman to Michael Shannon, Octavia Spencer, Richard Jenkins, Rachel Weisz and Nicholas Hoult.  What a night!

LA LA LAND is Huge Hit at THE NEON!

We’re very excited at THE NEON.  In less than two weeks, LA LA LAND has become our #5 highest grossing film of all time.  To put that in perspective, every other film in our Top 10 played at THE NEON for at least six weeks…so LA LA LAND has performed exceptionally well.  Many thanks to everyone who has helped to make the end of 2016 and the beginning of 2017 such a success.

This weekend, we are holding both LA LA LAND and MANCHESTER BY THE SEA – both of which are certain to be “Best Picture” contenders during this year’s Oscar Race.

TIFF 2016 – Day #5

Thanks for coming back to my blog.  I had intended to see more films today, but I got turned away from a screening of JACKIE (along with 200+ other people) because the demand was too big and being 25 minutes early wasn’t enough.  That said, there will be another screening Wednesday, so I will know to be extra early.

My first screening of the day was the latest by the prolific (especially for being quite young) Xavier Dolan –  IT’S ONLY THE END OF THE WORLD.   This is essentially a chamber piece about a gay man who comes to visit his family and tell them he’s dying…he hasn’t been home for 12 years…and it’s quickly evident why he’s been away so long.  Though I clearly understand what he’s doing, and the film is ultimately well done (though I do have some complaints about several of his choices), this is a film that’s hard to stomach.  The cast is exceptional (I love Marion & Gaspard), but shouting matches, unlikable/annoying characters…it’s not something I can highly recommend. 

LOVING, the new film by Jeff Nichols (TAKE SHELTER, MUD), was next on my list.  It’s also a film I’ve been looking forward to, and I’m happy to say that it didn’t disappoint.  This quiet and eloquent film is about the an interracial couple in Virginia whose illegal marriage and subsequent punishment (they went to D.C. to get married, but it wasn’t recognized in Virginia) eventually caught the attention of the ACLU…and eventually went to the Supreme Court to overturn miscegenation laws. For a film that’s largely about court battles, we only spend a few minutes in court rooms…and that’s refreshing.  Instead, we spend lots of time with this Mildred & Richard (stunningly and lovingly played by Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton) – and watching a couple who are so clearly in love with each other makes such a strong case for marriage equality on many levels.

My final film of the day was LA LA LAND, directed by Damien Chazelle (WHIPLASH).  This splashy, colorful, song-and-dance musical harkens memories of a bygone era of the Hollywood studio system.  But even more, its influence is from one of my favorite musical directors – Jacques Demy.  The opening scene, shot on an L.A. highway, will blow your mind and immediately had me scribble YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT in my notes.  Starring Emma Stone (who will clearly be nominated for an Oscar) and Ryan Gosling, this film had me on my feet immediately as the “The End” appeared on screen.  For the rest of the night, melodies swirled in my head and merely walking down the street was accompanied by the film’s infectious score.  I can’t wait to obtain the soundtrack and see the film again!

Tomorrow is an extra busy day.  Hoping I’ll be able to stay awake for all of it.

Woody Allen’s IRRATIONAL MAN – starring Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone & Parker Posey – Opens Friday at THE NEON

Don’t forget that this Thursday, August 6 at 7:30, director Enzo Libertini will premiere his new film THRESHOLD (Libertini has a background in theater, this is his first feature film). “Three slackers wake up to find their friend is missing and in the search for his whereabouts they continue their normal routine that is both odd and compelling. When this routine becomes threatened they must face what’s been holding them back and cross the threshold into truly living. Filmmaker Enzo Libertini brings an epic comedy to the screen for the first time. On Thursday, August 27 at 7:30, we will hold the world premiere of the new film DIARY OF A DEADBEAT: THE STORY OF JIM VANBEBBER. “Jim VanBebber, an uncompromising, underground, outlaw filmmaker from Greenville, Ohio has become one of the most infamous and controversial American independent filmmakers of our time. VanBebber brought us such cult classics as DEADBEAT AT DAWN (The first feature film made in Dayton, Ohio) MY SWEET SATAN, THE MANSON FAMILY, and many others. Diary of a Deadbeat is a documentary that follows his life from his early super 8mm films to his strange days in Hollywood. It features interviews with an eclectic group of artists such as Phil Ansemlo (Pantera), Richard Kern (Trangressive Film Director), Nivek Ogre (Skinny Puppy), R.A the Rugged Man, and many more. Director Victor Bonacore will be in attendance, granting the world the first look at this documentary that has been in the works for over five years! Woody Allen’s last three films – MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, TO ROME WITH LOVE and BLUE JASMINE – have all been big hits at THE NEON. On Friday, we will open Allen’s latest film – a 1920’s romantic comedy starring Colin Frith and Emma Stone – MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT.  BOYHOOD – the best-reviewed film of the year – will stick around for another week.

Synopsis for MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT: “Chinese conjuror Wei Ling Soo is the most celebrated magician of his age, but few know that he is the stage persona of Stanley Crawford (Colin Firth), a grouchy and arrogant Englishman with a sky-high opinion of himself and an aversion to phony spiritualists’ claims. Persuaded by his friend, Howard Burkan (Simon McBurney), Stanley goes on a mission to the Cote d’Azur mansion of the Catledge family: mother Grace (Jacki Weaver), son Brice (Hamish Linklater), and daughter Caroline (Erica Leerhsen). He presents himself as a businessman named Stanley Taplinger in order to debunk the alluring young clairvoyant Sophie Baker (Emma Stone) who is staying there with her mother (Marcia Gay Harden)…What follows is a series of events that are magical in every sense of the word and send the characters reeling. Sidney Pointier stars as Buck. This was also the first film that he directed. Harry Belafonte stars as the preacher. His production company, Belafonte Enterprise produced the film with others. Ruby Dee was the wife of Buck. This film was set in Kansas Territory immediately following the Civil War in the late 1860’s. The cost is $20. Mark your calendars now for The Dayton LGBT Film Festival – set for October 10-12. I met with the festival committee on Sunday for our epic, hash-it-out, planning meeting…and we came up with a really strong line-up of films. That said, I’m still awaiting confirmation from a couple titles before I can make big announcements. However, I can announce this – our Opening Night film – THE WAY HE LOOKS, sponsored by Square One Salon & Spa – is a huge crowd pleaser that has been winning awards all around the world. I hope you’ll hurry down to get tickets once they go on sale!
